How will this side dish make your life easier?

Ever heard of baby couscous? Me neither. It's really just a cute name for regular couscous. But isn't it a cute name that intrigues you to try it? Couscous is great because you boil water, add couscous and let it sit for a few minutes. Boom you've got an easy grain.

It's great with Instant Pot Fish, added to this Spinach Strawberry Salad (don't knock it 'till you try it), Pan Seared Salmon with Summer Salad, or a Pork Chop + Kale, Apple, & Pecan Salad.

What makes it so good?

  • Couscous
  • Chicken bouillon
  • Lemon juice
  • Parsley/herbs

How do I make lemon herb baby couscous?

Bring ¾ cup water to a boil. Once water is at a rolling boil, turn off heat and remove pot from heat.

Expert Tip: Don't have chicken bouillon, use ¾ c of chicken broth or stock instead of water and chicken bouillon.

Add ½ c couscous, ½ teaspoon chicken bouillon, and ¼ teaspoon salt to boiling water. Stir and cover for 5 minutes. Chop 1-2 T of parsley leaves, set aside.

Expert Tip: Completely remove parsley leaves from stalks, they're tough and don't taste that great.

Remove lid and stir to fluff couscous. Once all water has been absorbed, add in parsley leaves and 1 T of lemon juice. Stir together and serve with your main dish immediately.

Expert Tip: Add parsley slowly and taste if you're not sure how much parsley you'd like in it.

Expert Tips

  • Don't have chicken bouillon, use ¾ c of chicken broth or stock instead of water and chicken bouillon.
  • Completely remove parsley leaves from stalks, they're tough and don't taste that great.
  • Add parsley slowly and taste if you're not sure how much parsley you'd like in it.

FAQ

Is couscous pasta or rice?

Couscous is made of durum wheat, the same wheat as pasta, so it's just really small pasta beads. Because it's made from the same wheat as pasta, it tastes just like pasta.

Is couscous a healthy food?

I recommend eating a variety of foods. You can choose whole grain couscous for a bit more protein and fiber, but any couscous is great. Instead of focusing on eating just healthy foods, as a registered dietitian, I'd actually recommend focusing on eating lots of different delicious foods that meet your convenience needs. You can learn more about my approach to nutrition by listening to this podcast I recorded on Intuitive Eating, or checking out my nutrition services page. (I do work with nutrition clients).

Do you rinse couscous before cooking?

No you don't need to rinse it. Treat it like pasta (except you boil the water, then add couscous after turning off the burner when cooking it).

What can I make with leftover ingredients?

  • (parsley/herbs) Add to your pasta like this 15 Minute Pasta recipe, Instant Pot Lentil Stroganoff, or Parchment Packet Baked Salmon.
  • (lemon) 5 Minute Strawberry Sauce, Pan Seared Pork Chops w/ Potatoes & Veggies, or this Shaved Zucchini Salad with Corn & Feta.

4 Ingredient Cheese & Tomato Couscous Nuggets for Babies

Nutritious couscous makes for great baby food and snacks! Whether you’re looking for a homemade toddler snack, baby finger food or baby led weaning ideas, these couscous nuggets can’t be beaten for simplicity. Just four ingredients, no added salt or sugar, but a great flavor that the whole family will enjoy.

Introducing Odette to finger foods wasn’t quite the fun adventure I’d hoped. Despite being skeptical of spoons and really wanting to feed herself, she had a sensitive gag reflex and it was hard for her to learn to properly bite off, chew and manage foods in her mouth.

So that was a conundrum!

These couscous nuggets ended up being an early success story, thanks to the crumbly nature of baked couscous nuggets.

Couscous for Babies

Couscous is great for babies who are just starting on textured foods. It’s versatile and can be added into favorite purees initially just to give baby a sense of texture without overwhelming them. It’s a good source of carbs and plant based protein.

And for parents, it’s simple to prepare! Just let it sit in boiling water for about 5 minutes. It’s the easiest grain to make in tiny individual portions. You can simple prepare just 1-2 tablespoons of it at a time, in a mug.

But today we are turning our couscous into a finger food instead.

Couscous as a Finger Food / Toddler Snack / Baby Led Weaning

So back to my personal conundrum, where I had a baby who wanted to eat finger foods but wasn’t all that great with chewing. Sigh. Well, these couscous nuggets worked out well for her.

In this format, the couscous crumbles off so there is not a lot of chewing required. If you cook for the lower amount of time given, they will stay nice and soft for younger babies or those who aren’t yet competent chewers. They would be fantastic for baby led weaning.

If, you cook the couscous nuggets for the full time given, they will have a crispy outer edge which will appeal more to older babies, toddlers, kids and adults.

Let’s not forget the parents who bothered to make the nuggets though.

Mr. Veggie and I were big fans too. Despite the lack of salt and sugar, they have a fantastic flavor from the concentrated tomato paste and generous dash of herbs. So your whole family can enjoy them together, or you can at least snack on a few while feeding your little one.

A creamy garlic dip makes a great accompaniment!

They are also great cold as on-the-go snacks, and can be frozen.

Please note that I am no expert on the subject of baby feeding, and can only draw on my own experiences. All babies seem to like different things.

If you’re interested in learning more about introducing different textures and teaching your baby how to self feed, I highly recommend Nancy Ripton and Melanie Potock’s Baby Self Feeding.

  • 1 cup of dried couscous
  • 1 Tbsp mixed Italian herbs
  • 3 Tbsp tomato paste
  • 1.5 cups (100 g) grated strong cheddar cheese*
  • Pre-heat the oven to 200C / 400F.

  • Measure out your couscous and herbs into a bowl, and then pour 1 cup of boiling water over the top. Cover with a plate or paper towel and leave for 5 minutes.

  • Add the cheese and tomato puree into a saucepan. Heat until the cheese just begins to melt, and then add in the couscous and stir until the mixture is completely combined.

  • Line a large baking tray with parchment paper, and brush with olive oil.

  • Use your hands to shape the couscous mixture into nuggets. (I got 20 nuggets from this recipe.)

  • Brush or spray the nuggets with olive oil, and bake for about 15 minutes (for soft texture) or closer to 25 minutes (for crunchier edges).

*You really want a strong tasting cheese to make these flavorful. When I talk about strong cheddar, I am referring to the mature white cheddar cheese that is common in the UK. If you live in the US, your cheese is a little different (dare I say more bland?!) and I’d recommend getting some Irish or British cheddar to use in this recipe OR adding a little parmesan for extra flavor.

10 minutes We feed children with semolina, but couscous is most often the same durum wheat. To make it not sticky, but fluffy, I usually not only let it stand, but also wrap it with a towel and then beat it with a fork. Sweet peppers are also suitable for yellow, but dressing here is more of an additional element: couscous will be delicious without it! nine 30 g

At what age can couscous children be

0002 Reading time: 3 minutes

Couscous is a traditional oriental dish that is widely used in Russia. It consists of carefully rolled balls of semolina, rice, barley or durum wheat, sprinkled with wheat flour. Couscous has a pleasant, delicate, creamy taste and can be an excellent side dish for meat, fish or vegetables, and thanks to its unique composition it is very healthy. That is why many mothers have a question - at what age can you start treating your baby with couscous and how to properly introduce the product into the children's diet. nine0003

1 Is it possible for a child to have couscous

1.1 Composition of couscous

1.2 Useful properties

1.3 When and how much can be given

1.3.1 Cooking

1.3.10

Couscous is not only allowed for children, but also recommended, as it belongs to healthy dietary products. Porridge must be present in the children's diet, as it contains:

  • vitamins of groups B, E, PP; nine0363
  • micro and macro elements - iron, copper, calcium, potassium, manganese, sodium, phosphorus, zinc, selenium;
  • antioxidants;
  • organic acids;
  • vegetable fiber.

The useful product contains a very large amount of so-called "slow" carbohydrates, which accelerate the breakdown of fats and help to better assimilate the beneficial substances contained in other products.

Useful properties

When answering the question whether it is possible to give couscous to children, one should take into account the useful properties of this dish. Effect of oriental porridge:

  • due to the large amount of iron increases hemoglobin in the blood;
  • normalizes sugar and cholesterol levels;
  • the presence of couscous in the children's menu improves immunity, helps fight colds;
  • improves the functioning of the nervous system, sleep, reduces nervousness and aggressiveness;

Oriental groats are a hypoallergenic and dietary product approved for diseases of the gastrointestinal tract and allergies.

When and how much can be given?

Given the beneficial properties and pleasant creamy taste of cereals, many mothers are interested in - at what age can children be given couscous. Pediatricians advise to start "acquaintance" with oriental porridge only when the child is at least 8-9months. The digestive system in children of this age is already able to fully digest the proteins contained in cereals.

Basic rules for introducing couscous to the children's menu:

  1. The dish is not recommended for children under 8 months old, as it can cause allergies and digestive problems.
  2. When is the best time to give a dish to a child under one year old - only after he "gets acquainted" with semolina and other cereals.
  3. When a dish is prepared for a child older than one year, other ingredients can be added to it - pieces of fruit, berries, nuts, dried fruits. nine0363

Couscous in the diet for children up to a year is introduced gradually, starting with a teaspoon. After that, you need to carefully monitor the condition of the baby. If he feels well, remains cheerful and active, the amount of porridge is gradually increased.

How to prepare the dish

The dish can be cooked in various ways - without cooking, steamed, combined with chicken breast, tomatoes, sweet peppers and other vegetables.

  1. Cooking porridge is very simple: pour hot water over the groats and leave for 13-15 minutes. After that, the porridge can be served at the table, seasoned with butter if desired. nine0363
  2. Pour a glass of cereal with a glass of water, boil for 2 minutes and add a slice of butter.
  3. Pour the grits into a colander, place over a saucepan of boiling water and simmer until tender. This method allows you to save all the useful substances contained in the cereal.
