The company's largest food manufacturing plant will serve up to 1 million babies and children annually in Asia

The company announced an agreement to open a new nutrition research center.

Abbott /NYSE: ABT/ has opened Singapore's largest food processing plant to meet growing regional demand for baby food, including Similac/R/. This manufacturing facility will serve up to 1 million babies and children annually in Asia. Its construction reflects the company's growing interest in the region. Abbott has invested US$300 million (SGD450 million), the company's largest single investment in Asia and its largest investment in food production.

In addition, Abbott announced an agreement to open a new nutrition research center in Singapore. The center's staff will conduct clinical trials and develop food products specifically tailored to the dietary needs of Asians. This center of excellence complements Abbott's new Pharmaceutical Research and Development Center that opened in Singapore last month.

“For more than 80 years, Abbott has been a leader in nutritional science and has provided state-of-the-art products to generations of families and children,” said Abbott Chairman and CEO Miles D. White at the grand opening of a new plant in Singapore today. “These new ventures in Singapore will allow us to get even closer to our customers both geographically and in terms of understanding the unique dietary needs and preferences of Asian customers."

Abbott will now manufacture baby products for sale in Asia at this state-of-the-art facility, including infant formula, infant formula, and baby milk. This facility provides first-class control of safety, process quality and cleanliness throughout the entire production and distribution process.

Products manufactured at Abbott Manufacturing Singapore will contain the same quality ingredients and undergo the same testing as Abbott products manufactured at other facilities, ie. consumers will get the same products they trust today. New Abbott Asia-Pacific Nutrition Research Center in Singapore

Abbott Nutrition also entered into an agreement with Singapore to open a new, state-of-the-art Asia-Pacific Nutrition Research Center at Biopolis, a technology park for high-tech biomedical research. The center will be staffed by experienced Abbott scientists who will conduct research and clinical trials in areas such as nutrition and sensory science, clinical nutrition, new ingredient evaluation and cognitive science.

Based in Singapore, Abbott's scientists will develop new ingredients, products, flavors and packages specifically to meet Asia Pacific's most important dietary needs and the tastes and preferences of its customers.
