Morrisons is the latest supermarket to recall a product due to it being unsafe for some people to eat. The product is being withdrawn from shelves because it contains an ingredient not mentioned on the label.

Food recalls are issued when there is a health and safety problem with a product. This could mean an unmentioned ingredient on the label, which could cause harm to some people if they are allergic to that ingredient.

Ella’s Kitchen is recalling Banana Multigrain Baby Rice because it contains oats, (gluten) which are not mentioned on the label.

This means the product is a possible health risk for anyone with coeliac disease, an allergy or intolerance to oats or gluten.

The inclusion of oats also makes this product thicker in texture than it should be for a four month plus product.

This product is sold at Morrisons stores, as well as Ocado and Amazon. It may also be found in some Boots branches.

The product comes in a pack 125g in size and has a best before date of October 6, 2023. Its batch code is 27922.

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) published a risk statement on its website, giving consumers more information about the product. It stressed that the allergens in the product are oat and gluten.

The FSA continued: “Texture of product thicker than usual. This product contains oats, (gluten) making it a possible health risk for anyone with coeliac disease, an allergy or intolerance to oats or gluten.

    The FSA went on to explain the action taken by the company, saying: “Ella’s Kitchen is recalling the above product from customers and has been advised to contact the relevant allergy support organisations, which will tell their members about the recall.

    “The company has also issued a point-of-sale notice to its customers. This notice explains to customers why the product is being recalled and tell them what to do if they have bought the product.”

    In its notice, Ella’s Kitchen said: “We are recalling this product because the affected batch (detailed below) contains undeclared oats which is an allergen risk and makes the texture thicker than it should be for a four month plus product.

    “The affected products have the following details: Batch code: 27922. Best before date: 06/10/2023.

    “If you have purchased this product, please check the batch code and best before end date of the product, which can be found on the bock of pock below the barcode. Affected product has already been removed from the shelves.

    “If you have bought Ella's Kitchen Bonano Multigrain Baby Rice as detailed above, do not feed this to your little one.

    "Instead: Check if you have bought the affected batch code of Ella's Kitchen Banana Multigrain Baby Rice. You can do this by taking a picture of this notice or writing down the batch code for reference at home. Return the product to the store for a full refund (with or without a receipt).”

    Ella’s Kitchen added: “We're here to help you. For more information please contact us on +44 330 016 5221 or email [email protected] or use the ‘Contact Us’ form on our website: www.ellaskitchen.co.uk.”

    The FSA offered its advice to customers too. It said: “If you have bought the above product and have coeliac disease, an allergy or intolerance to oat or gluten, do not eat it.

    “Instead return it to the store from where it was purchased for a full refund. For more information, please contact Ella’s Kitchen on 0330 016 5221 or email customercare@ellaskitchen. co.uk.”

    The company also gave information on food recalls in general, saying: “Sometimes there will be a problem with a food product that means it should not be sold.

    “Then it might be 'withdrawn' (taken off the shelves) or 'recalled' (when customers are asked to return the product).

    “Sometimes foods have to be withdrawn or recalled if there is a risk to consumers because the allergy labelling is missing or incorrect or if there is any other food allergy risk. When there is a food allergy risk, the FSA will issue an Allergy Alert.”

      “The Chocolate Eater”: Food Traffic and Environmental Justice in Toni Morrison’s Tar Baby

      In 2008, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) released its annual food security report, whose authors open with the poignant observation that "world hunger is increasing". This food crisis can be understood as an effect of economic globalization—or more precisely, of a food system that consolidates agricultural production and distribution in corporations headquartered chiefly in North America, Europe, and Asia. As the FAO report suggests, communities in the developing world are at risk within this system because they depend increasingly on imported goods for nourishment and because the number of small-scale farmers who provide an alternative food source is shrinking. The UN tacitly correlates this condition of food insecurity to factors ranging from poverty to climate change. In the contemporary period then, world hunger stands as a pressing environmental crisis that derives from a world economy in which the fully industrialized structure seems neither ecologically sustainable nor socially just.

      Written nearly thirty years before the 2008 FAO report, Toni Morrison's fourth novel resonates with this paradigm of hunger by framing the food system in the terms of environmental justice—a social movement that asserts the interdependence of class, ethnicity, and ecology. Named for an African American folktale, Tar Baby imagines the contemporary era through an entwined narrative of hunger, consumerism, and environmental exploitation. Food tropes prove especially crucial to this narrative and elucidate the novel's geographic setting: the fictionalized Caribbean islands of Dominique and Isle des Chevaliers. In the novel, Isle des Chevaliers is transformed into a modern vacation community by white US candy executive Valerian Street. The island figures as a palimpsest of unsustainable environmental development and unjust trade practices, a geographic imaginary that embodies the longue durée of Caribbean history. Tar Baby concretizes this history via the symbols of Street Brothers Candy Company and the "candy giants," which together emblematize the extraction of natural resources from the region in the service of not only profit but also consumer tastes for exoticized foods like sugar and chocolate. Attentive to both social and ecological forms of injustice, the novel critiques this food economy while eschewing binaries of land and market or producer and consumer. In Tar Baby, every character is a consumer with appetites that highlight a complex relationship to the Caribbean and to the global marketplace.
