I think our baby led weaning sweet potato and spinach burger recipe has to be the most viewed page on our blog of all time and considering how popular it is on Pinterest it will continue to be for many years to come. As you know, I am always looking to create new recipes in the kitchen so I thought I’d do a little twist on the vegetarian sweet potato and spinach burger and add a little tuna. Introducing tuna patties for babies!
Dexter is now 23 months old so kind of past the baby led weaning stage, but he still loves eating finger foods and loves things like burgers, nuggets and pizza; all unhealthy stuff that I try to make as healthy as possible in the kitchen. This tuna baby led weaning recipe, using sweet potato and spinach alongside canned tuna to make burgers or patties, incorporates so many healthy nutrients and I am more than happy for him to have as many as his heart desires.

No matter whether you call these tuna patties or tuna burgers, this baby tuna recipe is gonna be a firm favourite in your household!
These tuna baby led weaning burgers are pretty simple to make, they cook quickly and are able to be stored in the fridge or freezer if you want to batch cook a few. I highly recommend only keeping them for three days in the fridge and fully defrosting them before eating them if you do decide to freeze them.

Can you use canned tuna in baby led weaning?
The NHS states that canned tuna can be used as part of a balanced and healthy diet for your baby, however that choice is down to you. Canned tuna can contain mercury and for this reason, some nutritionists will say it’s not safe for children under the age of two. I advise you to do your own research and decide if you should offer canned tuna to your baby or not.
Canned tuna is a great option for lazy Mums like me who want to cook simple recipes. Because it’s already cooked and has a long shelf life, it’s something that can be kept in the cupboard for ages and used whenever necessary!

Ingredients
- can of tuna
- 1 sweet potato
- 1 egg
- handful of spinach
- seasonings to taste (pepper, garlic, basil, oregano, cayenne,)
Instructions
- Cook the sweet potato either in microwave or oven, or if you are lazy like me, buy frozen diced sweet potato and steam it or boil it gently for ten minutes.
- While the sweet potato is cooking, wilt the spinach by frying gently in some oil or garlic or by pouring boiling water over it, then squeezing out the water.
- Mash the cooked sweet potato and add the canned tuna. Mix well.
- Add an egg and combine thoroughly.
- Add seasoning to taste.
- Prepare a baking tray by lining it with foil and spraying oil where your patties will go.
- Using a table spoon, spoon some mixture and roll into a ball. Place on the baking tray and then lightly press down on the ball with the back of your spoon so a burger shape is formed.
- Repeat until all of the patties are made.
- Bake in the oven at 180C for fifteen minutes until browned.

Homemade Tuna & Cauli Mash Recipe
for Little Mashies reusable food pouches
Ingredients:
110 g canned tuna in spring water, drained
100 g Cauliflower, cut into florets
100 g Zucchini peeled, chopped coarsely
1 tbsp (20g) Grated Cheddar
Instructions:
Step 1: Steam cauliflower pieces until cooked through, about 15 minutes.
Step 2: Add zucchini and steam a further 5 minutes.
Step 3: Add the mixture to a food processor or blender and puree together with the canned tuna and cheese. You can add breast milk, water or formula if a smoother consistency is desired.

For Baby Led Weaning or older kids
For baby led weaning we usually start with large finger sized foods from 6-9mths old. Cauliflower and Broccoli are tough because you have to be careful that the tiny florets don't break off in your baby's mouth. Personally I would choose to do these as a combo of puree and blw. I'd cook the stalk really well in long thick fingers and then with the floret ends I'd puree those and it would become a dip for the stalks. I feel like that would be the safest option for my little ones.
From 9mths in blw you would chop the cauliflower and tuna really small (smaller than bite size), this is because babies tend to swallow whole without chewing at this age. In traditional baby food this is where people start to mash instead of puree. From 12mths we start to use bite sized pieces in baby led weaning and traditional baby food recipes. My little one Lola loved grated cheese after about 14mths and it was great for her to practice picking up little pieces of food so from 12mths I wouldn't always melt the cheese in this recipe.
Beyond 18mths we move to large finger sizes for some things so that the baby can get practice biting off small pieces and chewing. In this case we would serve cauliflower florets (including the stalks) to the baby so they could grip it and chew on the ends. If you are using fresh tuna you can cut fingers and smaller pieces the same as I've described above for the cauliflower. If you are using canned tuna you cant really make fingers from that so I would puree, mash, or make teeny tiny pieces of that until around 12mths, then start to use bite sized pieces.

At 6 mths of age you can introduce a range of puree's to your baby (see our baby food recipe book and use coupon code RECIPE to remove 100% of the price at the checkout).
For baby led weaning you skip the baby food puree altogether and start with large (2 finger sized) pieces of the food. We would of course do this on our Little Mashies sucky platter! So from 6-9mths of age in baby led weaning foods should be the size of about 2 fingers so that the baby can pick it up and self feed. They also need to be well cooked so they are soft, and with no loose pieces (for example tiny florets that can break off on broccoli, or a slice of apple that's so thin it can break when gnawed on).
From around 9mths with baby led weaning you chop the food very small (to avoid choking). I would suggest 2-4 grains of rice in size. It's a small piece so that if they swallow it whole they won't choke. In traditional baby food recipes this is the stage where we mash food so it has a little texture.
At around 12mths of age in baby led weaning the food goes up to bite sizes (and this is the same in non baby led weaning kids), about fingernail sized pieces. Of course some babies will be on a different timeline depending on whether they have heaps or a few teeth.
Every baby is different and you just have to watch carefully and get to know how your baby is with food. Never leave them alone whilst eating, and I also recommend sitting them at a table with you for all meals if you can. It helps set the expectation for later in life and you can be a role model for how to eat well. Around 18mths you can offer your little one larger serves again (so a whole apple for example) so that they can learn to take smaller bites themselves, to chew, and to swallow.
It is widely recognised that babies should start solids around 6 months of age. At this time reusable baby food pouches can be really convenient to take your homemade healthy puree with you when you are out and about. Spoon attachments are available so you can feed your baby directly from the pouch from 6 months old. Without a spoon attachment babies usually start feeding themselves pouched food around 8 months old. This is when they hit their independant phase and what to do everything themselves. A pouch is a lot cleaner than a bowl and spoon in these circumstances. We do however advise that you give your baby a variety of meals, not just ones that are in a refillable pouch.
Refilling your reusable yoghurt pouches is easy! Simply turn the reusable food pouch upside down and open the wide double ziplock at the bottom of the pouch. Once the zipper is open you can spoon yoghurt into the pouch or pour it in (out of a jug or bottle).
If you are concerned about making a mess you can use a kitchen funnel so that all of the yoghurt stays away from the yoghurt pouch zipper.
Another idea that we commonly do at home when filming videos (but it would also be useful when holding a baby in one arm), anyway.. the idea is that you put the pouch upside down in a glass (with the lid on), open the ziplock and the glass acts like a second hand, holding the pouch still whilst you spoon the yoghurt in. This is what I do when I only have one hand to use for the refill!I also tend to refill my reusable yoghurt pouches in bulk. I'll buy a good quality yoghurt from Coles or Woolworths and will fill a whole 10pk of pouches in one go so they are all ready for snacks on the go.
My kids always want to eat when they are out and refilling the reusable pouches one at a time just doesn't work for us. The only time i do that actually is when I've pureed a meal that my toddler refused, put it in a reusable pouch, and given it to her again. Oh and the other time I do singles.. there are two actually. When we go for ice-cream (it is so much cleaner when in a pouch), and when I have leftover smoothie (again, it stops me getting smoothie all through my car, pram, or playroom).

Now, to clean your Little Mashies food pouches by hand simply open up the ziplock at the bottom and take off the cap. Run warm water through the open ziplock with the baby pouch facing downward so the water comes out of the spout and into the sink. The shape of Little Mashies reusable pouches acts like a funnel, pushing out food and making the pouch very easy to clean.
To start washing your reusable pouch, squirt some dishwashing liquid into the refillable pouch, then use a baby bottle brush to clean the inside walls (just like a baby bottle). To clean the spout use a straw brush (like the ones we have here), and clean it in the same manner that you would clean the teat from a baby’s bottle. Give the reusable pouch a rinse and place it over a kitchen utensil in the drying rack to dry. If you don’t have time to dry it fully place it in the freezer until you are ready to use it again. Do not put wet reusable food pouches in dark cupboards or draws. They are very easy to dry if you have removed the cap, and placed something inside the zipper to keep the pouch open (we use a whisk, tongs or a spatula).
Note that if you continuously wash your pouches in the dishwasher the high temperature will make the zipper wear out more quickly. At home we wash our pouches mostly by hand because it is so quick and easy and then just use the dishwasher when we have had loads of kids over and served reusable yoghurt pouches or smoothies to them all.

Tuna is a large commercial fish of the mackerel family. The product has an exquisite taste, is considered a delicacy and quite expensive. The high cost is due to the special composition of the meat. The red-pink flesh of these fish contains a huge amount of useful substances: from essential amino acids to trace elements and vitamins, antioxidants. For the most valuable nutritional properties, tuna meat is often called "sea chicken" or "sea calf".
Composition and properties of tuna
Tuna is in great demand in the markets and shops, and this is not surprising. This unique product is equally useful in any form - chilled, frozen, canned. The main thing is that the carcass is fresh. Tuna fillet resembles beef in color - it is quite bright, the color is uniform. More details about whether children can have tuna, at what age and how to choose the right tasty and high-quality product will be described below.
Fresh tuna meat contains omega-3 and omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids, antioxidants, retinol (vitamin A), pyridoxine (vitamin B6), riboflavin (vitamin B2), nicotinic and folic acids, tocopherol (vitamin E). In addition, the pulp contains iodine, zinc, chromium, selenium, phosphorus, magnesium and manganese, potassium, calcium, copper, sodium.
The product practically does not contain carbohydrates and fats, therefore it is considered dietary, suitable for adult and children's nutrition, as well as for the diet of diabetics and athletes. The calorie content of tuna is about 140 kcal per 100 grams.
The benefits of tuna
The benefits of tuna are enormous. This fish:

Tuna for children: from what age, in what quantity
Tuna for children from 3 years old.
It is better to start acquaintance with fresh fish. The maximum serving size is 50 grams (raw). If the baby is allergic to marine fish - no more than 20 grams.
The first time you need to carefully observe the reaction. If symptoms of a food allergy occur, the introduction of the product is delayed. If there is no negative reaction, tuna can be left in the diet of crumbs, gradually increasing the portion (up to 100–120 grams per day, but no more).
Canned tuna is allowed for children from 4 years of age.

How to choose tuna for baby food
Tuna is sold chilled, frozen and canned. Fresh product is stored no more than 4 days, frozen - up to 14 days. Canned food may last the longest (see expiration date).
Fresh and frozen tuna meat - reddish-pink. A changed color or an unpleasant odor indicates that the product is stale. It is even worse when brownish spots are visible - in no case should such fish be eaten.
The best time to buy fresh tuna is from May to August.
How to choose canned food?
Prefer tuna in its own juice rather than in oil. Such a product retains more vitamins and nutrients. Tuna in oil is also significantly higher in calories. It is better not to offer it to overweight children.
The packaging must be free of deformations, dents, rust marks. Marking can be embossed or applied with indelible paint. Fuzzy characters often indicate a fake, be careful. Therefore, an extruded factory marking is preferable.
Look for a product marked "albacore" or "dolphin friendly". The first means that inside white tuna meat is the most healthy and delicious. The sign "dolphin friendly" indicates that the catch did not lead to the death of dolphins.
Quality canned tuna contains only fish meat, salt and vegetable oil (if it is tuna in oil). The best canned food is made in Italy, Spain and Japan. But the Russian product is often prepared using frozen raw materials.
You can also gently shake the jar before buying to get a rough estimate of the ratio of fish to liquid. If the container is glass, it is possible to carefully examine the contents.
How to cook tuna for kids
Frozen and fresh fish, as well as canned fish, are suitable for preparing baby food. Frozen food should be thawed at room temperature first. In no case should the fillet be dipped in boiling water or placed in the microwave. Get the product out of the freezer in advance.
Tuna is best boiled or steamed for children, stewed or baked. Frying in oil, breading and spices is not recommended. Such dishes are more difficult to digest, provoke eating disorders in crumbs - gas formation and bloating. You don't need to add a lot of salt either.
Children's meals with tuna - from 3 years old
Stewed tuna
Ingredients:
- 300 g tuna fillet;
- half a glass of dried apricots;
- half a cup of prunes;
- 1 bulb.
Thoroughly rinse prunes and dried apricots, chop. Chop the peeled onion into half rings. Rinse the fish, dry it, cut into pieces.
Place prepared ingredients (1/2 of them) in a heavy-bottomed saucepan (or roasting pan) in layers: onions, fish, dried fruits. Then repeat the layers. Pour in purified (filtered) water and put on low heat. Simmer covered for about half an hour.

Oven-baked tuna
Ingredients:
- 200 g tuna fillet;
- salt on the tip of a knife;
- ½ teaspoon olive oil.
Rinse the fish, pat dry, cut into steaks, then brush with olive oil and salt. Salt should be used as little as possible. Place the steaks on a baking sheet or in a non-stick pan and place in the preheated oven.
Bake for 7-15 minutes (depending on the thickness of the steak). You can check the readiness with a fork or a wooden skewer. You can also cook tuna steaks on the grill, without adding oil.
Raw and stewed vegetables, casseroles, fresh herbs are ideal accompaniment to tuna dishes.

How to choose and store
Tuna meat can be bought all year round, but the freshest fish is sold from late spring to early autumn. The best fillets should be firm, dense, red or dark red in color with a characteristic meaty flavor. The thicker the piece of tuna, the juicier it will be when cooked.
Canned fish can be taken at any time. The best are canned skipper tuna and albacore. We advise you to buy jars that say dolphin friendly. This means that tuna was caught without the use of nets where dolphins can get.
Fresh fish should be consumed within 24 hours. If you don't plan to cook right away, place the fillet on a plate, wrap in cling film and refrigerate. Transfer the opened canned food to a glass jar, close the lid and store in the refrigerator for no more than 24 hours.

Business interest. At an auction on December 30, 2012, a 222 kg Pacific bluefin tuna was sold for 155.4 million yen, that is, the price per 1 kg was $6,243. The giant tuna went to an upscale restaurant. With mass catches, fish is much cheaper - 6-7 dollars per 1 kg.
