Watching an adorable kid lovingly curl up with their favorite stuffed animal can be achingly cute … until you think about where that stuffie has been. The sandbox, the car trunk, the dog’s mouth—oh, my! And then, ugh, what’s been on that stuffie (I have observed a kid burying boogers into the fur of their favorite stuffed lion).
Officially grossed out? Fortunately, many stuffed animals and plush dolls are machine-washable. Vinyl dolls should never be submerged in water. But with some supplies and techniques, you can remove grime and even undo a doll’s marker makeover.
What you need
For stuffed animals and plush dolls
- Laundry detergent: You can use your regular laundry detergent to machine-wash stuffies, or opt for a gentle version. We like Soak for hand-washing plush toys.
- Mesh washing bag: If you’re washing in the machine, a mesh bag can protect stuffies.
- Towel and fan (or humidifier) for air-drying: Prevent mold and mildew by ensuring the stuffed animal is dried all the way through.
For vinyl dolls
- Baby wipes: Human hands emit natural oils, which will cause more dust and dirt to stick to the doll’s exposed vinyl surfaces. If your kid takes their doll everywhere they go, we recommend using a baby wipe to give the doll a daily “bath.”
- Thin washcloth or dish towel: Dampen with water and thoroughly wring out, taking care not to transfer excess liquid into the doll’s body cavity. I swear by these thin, soft, durable washcloths—they’re slightly textured on one side to “grab” dust and dirt particles.
- Baking soda: Mix one teaspoon with a few drops of water to create a mildly abrasive paste to remove surface marks.
- Benzoyl peroxide cream (10% concentration): Stubborn stains on vinyl can be removed with benzoyl peroxide cream. We recommend using an opaque white cream version so you can see where you’ve applied it.
- Shampoo and conditioner: Synthetic doll hair can typically be washed with regular shampoo and conditioner, but check with the doll’s manufacturer.
- Small wire or plastic brush: Carefully detangle and brush doll hair with a small brush (check with the doll’s manufacturer about what type of brush to use).
- Towel: Carefully dry the doll (and gently wring out the hair), ensuring no moisture seeps into the joints or soft body.
How long will this take to clean?
Machine-washing a stuffed animal or plush doll will take as long as the gentle cycle lasts (on my washer, it’s 44 minutes). If you’re washing by hand, stuffed animals and plush dolls should soak for at least 15 minutes. Drying time varies based on whether you choose to machine- or air-dry.
For vinyl dolls, a daily or occasional wipe-down takes one to three minutes. To remove surface dirt and marks (pencil, washable marker, makeup, and so on), it could take a few minutes more. Washing and combing out a doll’s hair will take about five minutes, and then another hour or so to dry. Removing a stain that’s seeped into the doll’s vinyl “skin” will take five to 10 minutes of preparation and cleanup, with two to four hours of resting time in between.

Throwing a stuffed animal or plush doll in the washing machine is easy enough. Select the washer’s gentle cycle, with cold water, and use a small amount of detergent. This article from The New York Times suggests using a mesh washing bag and then padding the load with towels to protect the stuffed toy during the cycle.
If a stuffed toy has delicate features or is tattered from years of use, you may want to hand-wash it.
Fill up a sink, bucket, or bathtub—an area large enough to submerge the toy—and add two teaspoons of detergent for every gallon of water. Press down on the stuffed animal to fully submerge it, scrub it gently with your hands, and let it soak for at least 15 minutes (up to an hour).
Video: Julie KimDrain the soapy water, and refill the vessel with clean water. Submerge the stuffed animal, and gently scrub again to release the detergent. Drain the clean water, and submerge the stuffie a third time to release as much liquid as you can. Wrap the stuffie in a towel to absorb excess water.
Photo: Julie KimMachine-drying is fine for most stuffies that don’t have glued-on or plastic parts (but check with the manufacturer). Just be sure to select the no- or low-heat setting. If you air-dry, use a fan or dehumidifier to shorten drying time.
Vinyl doll maintenance wipe-down
Photo: Julie KimUsing a single baby wipe or slightly damp washcloth, wipe down exposed vinyl surfaces, focusing on hands, feet, and armpits (which tend to get the dirtiest). Apply pressure on body parts with your fingertips and fingernails. But go gently on the head and face, since the coloring of hand-painted features (eyes, freckles, hair) could scratch off.
Create an abrasive paste to remove surface marks

In a bowl, add a teaspoon of baking soda and a few drops of water to form the paste. Wet a corner of a washcloth, wring it out, and use it to rub the paste onto the affected area. Once the mark is gone, rinse out the washcloth, wring it out a second time, and wipe off any residue. Don’t use this paste on a doll’s facial features unless you’ve confirmed they’re dyed, not hand-painted.
Photo: Julie KimHow to wash a doll’s hair
A doll’s hair is either glued on or sewn into its head. Either way, avoid getting the scalp area too wet. Submerging the doll’s head or body in water may weaken the adhesive or lead to water getting trapped inside the doll’s body, creating a home for mold.
To begin, rinse the doll’s hair under a faucet, taking care not to wet the scalp. Use one or two drops of shampoo, lather it in, and rinse.
Apply the same amount of conditioner (or a spritz of detangling spray) and rub it in. If the doll’s hair needs detangling, run a small wire or plastic brush through its locks. Some shedding is normal, especially for newer dolls.
Video: Julie KimRinse well, squeeze out excess water, and place the doll on the edge of a table to let its locks dry. Doll hair is too delicate to be blow-dried—don’t do it. Also, you might melt the scalp or the hair itself. Repeat after me: Do. Not. Blow-Dry.

Keep in mind that dolls, like humans, come with many different types of hair. Some doll hair may keep its original style better than others. For curly doll hair care, Healthy Roots’ YouTube library has it all.
The collector’s hack for removing stubborn stains
Doll enthusiasts swear by this tried-and-true method to remove Sharpie marks or other stubborn stains. The sooner you treat these stains, the better. They infiltrate the vinyl’s porous surface, and the vinyl’s plasticizer may cause the ink or dye to spread.
Apply a thick layer of 10% benzoyl peroxide cream to the stained area. Use enough cream to conceal the stain beneath it.
Video: Julie KimWrap the area in plastic wrap, and use a hair tie or rubber band to secure it. This prevents the cream from drying out too quickly. Then place the wrapped doll in direct sunlight outside or inside by a window. Start with two hours at a time, keeping an eye on the doll to make sure it doesn’t get too hot. If the doll ever feels wobbly or sticky, let it cool before putting it back in the sun.

Remove the dried cream with a washcloth and warm water. Be sure to remove all of it—otherwise, the benzoyl peroxide will continue sucking pigment from the vinyl. For stubborn areas, you may need to repeat the process. You may see a lighter-colored area where the stain used to be. This will disappear after a few hours to a few days, depending on how many times you reapplied the cream to completely remove the stain.

Saving a Weak Baby Goat
Reading Time: 6 minutes
Spring kidding season brings a mix of excitement and trepidation on most goat farms. Even though I’ve helped deliver well over 100 kids, it’s still a little nerve-wracking each year, anticipating all the things that could go wrong and wondering if I’ll be prepared to save a weak baby goat!
The good news is that if you’re well prepared and your doe is in good health, things usually go pretty well, and you might not have to do much more than help dry off the babies and give mom some treats and love. But knowing the problems to look for and what to do if they arise can make the difference between life and death for a weak goat kid.
Beyond any major genetic or physical abnormalities, the three main life-threatening issues to be prepared for in a newborn kid include:
- Kid can’t feed itself.
- Dam can’t feed her kids.
- Kid is hypothermic.
How soon should a baby goat nurse after being born? All three of these issues are related to one central and critical fact: newborn kids MUST have colostrum within the first hours of life to survive. There are different reasons why a kid may not get this much-needed elixir of life, but without it, chances of survival are greatly reduced so your prompt attention and intervention may be needed.
Here’s a look at some of the causes of these three common problems, along with several possible interventions you can try before calling the vet (or until the vet arrives):
Triplets born at Briar Gate Farm. The buckling was too weak to stand and had to be bottle-fed. He responded to thiamine injections.PROBLEM: Kid is too weak to get up or has a weak sucking responseOccasionally a kid just had a rough delivery, has a slight deformity like contracted tendons that keep it from standing right away, or is slightly underdeveloped and lacking a strong sucking response. While this newborn goat kid can’t stand and may appear “floppy,” it does not have floppy kid syndrome, which doesn’t present until three to 10 days after birth and will be discussed later in this article.
Possible Interventions:
- You may need to help the kid get to its feet by propping it up and holding it to its mother’s teat for the first few sucks.
- You may need to express some of the mother’s colostrum into a bottle with a Pritchard nipple and feed a few ounces to the baby.
- You can try dripping or rubbing some colostrum, vitamin solution, corn syrup, or even coffee on its tongue and gums to help give it a little energy boost.
- A weak baby goat may benefit from a thiamine injection.
- If all else fails, or the baby goat won’t eat, you or your veterinarian may need to administer the initial colostrum through a stomach tube.
There are times when a dam delivers her kids before her colostrum has come in, and she doesn’t have an initial source of food for her own babies. On occasion, a dam may reject her kid for one reason or another. Or she may have had multiple kids and doesn’t have enough colostrum (and eventually milk) to feed them all. Or there may be too much competition among multiples, and the smallest, weakest kid loses out. There are also times when a dam has had such a difficult delivery that she is too sick and weak, or even worse, has died and cannot feed her baby. Whatever the reason, it’s going to be up to you to find a source of colostrum quickly for this kid to ensure its survival.
Possible Interventions:
- If you have multiple does kidding simultaneously, you may be able to express some colostrum from another dam that has just delivered and feed it to this kid.
- If you had another doe that gave birth earlier in the season or even last season, you could express some of her colostrum and save it to use in a situation like this. You can freeze it in small, 1-4oz. portions and then, when needed, gently thaw it to just above your own body temperature and feed it to the newborn in a bottle.
- You can mix up some powdered colostrum replacer with warm water and feed it to the newborn. Be sure to use “kid colostrum replacer” (not calf colostrum and not regular milk replacer).
If a baby is born on a very cold or wet day or night, or if the kid is under-developed and having a hard time regulating its body temperature, hypothermia can set in quickly. An otherwise healthy kid whose body temperature drops too low will be unable to eat or even absorb nutrients until its body returns to a normal goat temperature range. Before trying to feed a cold and lethargic goat kid, you will need to warm it up sufficiently.
Possible Solutions:
- The first thing to try is to dry the kid off and hold it close to your body. This will at least minimize heat loss and, for a slightly chilled kid, may raise the body temperature enough to get it to start eating.
- If a weak baby goat is very cold, a quick way to bring up body temperature is by submerging it in a hot water bath. If the kid is still wet, you can plunge it in a bucket of very warm water, holding its head above the water, of course, and then dry it off once warmed. If the baby is already dried off but still very cold, you may want to place the body, up to the neck, in a large plastic bag and then submerge it into the bucket of very warm water, so the baby stays dry. This acts as a hot tub and can restore a baby goat temperature quite quickly.
- Another method to bring body temperature up is to place the baby in a box and use a hairdryer to warm the box quickly. A semi-airtight container such as a plastic tub with a hole cut into one side to stick the hairdryer through works well. You don’t want the hot air blowing directly on the goat, so make sure the hole is near the top of the tub.
- Heat lamps and heating pads will also help warm a baby, but these both take longer to raise body temperature and are more of a help in keeping a baby warm once you’ve raised a frigid body temperature back up to normal. They are both potentially dangerous fire hazards, and there is a risk of overheating or even burning baby or other goats in the area, so use with extreme caution.
- Once the baby’s body temperature returns to normal, you can try feeding through one of the methods suggested above.
While a weak baby goat may seem floppy at birth, a newborn is most likely not suffering from FKS. The main symptom of FKS in an otherwise normal and healthy kid is the sudden onset of extremely weak baby goat legs and a loss of all muscle tone around three to 10 days after it is born. The kid will stop suckling a bottle or nursing well, although it will still be able to swallow. There will be no other symptoms of baby goat diseases, such as diarrhea, dehydration, or labored breathing, which, if present, could indicate something other than FKS.
The causes of FKS are not known, but the effect is that the bloodstream becomes too acidic. While some kids will recover with no treatment at all, early detection and treatment will increase survival chances. For floppy kid syndrome in goats, treatment is very simple and inexpensive — baking soda! Mix ½ to one tsp of baking soda with one cup of water and feed it orally if the baby can still suck. If not, it may need to be administered using a stomach tube. You should see improvement within a couple of hours when caught early and when FKS is the correct diagnosis. In more severe cases, the kid may need intravenous fluids and bicarbonate administration.
While most kids will arrive perfectly healthy and will need little assistance from you, knowing what to watch for and how to intervene quickly may enable you to save a weak baby goat. While these suggestions are a good starting point, they are not substitutions for expert medical advice or intervention, so don’t hesitate to call your veterinarian for further consultation and recommendations.

Baking soda has found application not only in cooking and traditional medicine, but also in everyday life, becoming an indispensable tool for many housewives. This familiar white powder will help you quickly clean your kitchen, bedroom or bathroom, take care of your pet and get rid of unpleasant odors.
Due to hard water with a lot of impurities, various impurities can appear on the soleplate. They are dangerous because when ironing they leave unpleasant dirty spots, which are subsequently quite difficult to remove from clothes.
The easiest and most effective way to get rid of dirt is to clean the iron with baking soda. To treat the iron:
- Take baking soda and toothpaste. Mix them in equal proportions. It is necessary to get a mushy mass.
- Spread the "cleaning agent" over the entire soleplate, including the sides. Leave until completely dry.
- Remove with a damp soft cloth.
In order to clean Soviet coins or coins made of hard metals, you will need:
- Prepare a solution of soda powder and 9% acetic acid mixed in equal proportions. When mixing, be sure to use rubber gloves, mix the solution in a non-metallic bowl.
- Dip the coins in the soda/vinegar solution. Leave until the complete disappearance of pollution. To turn coins in solution, it is better to use a wooden spatula.
- If necessary, clean additionally with laundry soap and a soft brush.
Please note that acetic acid and baking soda should not be used on high purity gold and silver coins.
Can I clean the aquarium with baking soda?
Pathogenic bacteria often accumulate in the aquarium, leading to the death of fish. To preserve the "fish" kingdom, it is recommended to regularly wash the aquarium, thoroughly cleaning the glass, soil and decorative elements.
Baking soda is a good antiseptic that does not contain harsh chemicals. Therefore, it can and should be used for an aquarium, especially if there is a need to urgently disinfect the aquarium.
- Move the fish to any tank. Drain the water.
- Moisten a soft sponge, dip it in soda powder. Thoroughly rinse the walls of the aquarium, use a toothbrush to clean the joints.
- Rinse the aquarium under a warm shower.
If an infection occurs, soak the soil and other elements in a weak soda solution for 20-30 minutes. Rinse them well after the procedure.
Mold soda
If there is mold in the house, sodium bicarbonate powder will help to get rid of such “surprises” quickly and effectively. Unlike most products, soda powder does not contain aggressive substances that pose a health hazard. It is a safe cleaner.
The most effective solution for mold control is:
- Dilute 1/4 tbsp. tea soda in one glass of water. Drain the solution into a spray bottle, shake the container to completely dissolve the powder.
- Spray on contaminated areas. Leave on for 5-7 minutes, then remove the product with a brush or sponge.
- Spray again with mortar, allow to dry completely. Remove residues with a damp cloth, dry.
If you need to clean a small area:
- Take a piece of a thick cloth, moisten it with water. Sprinkle 1/4 tbsp. drinking soda.
- Wipe off moldy areas.
Only areas resistant to abrasives can be wiped: tiles, walls, etc. For cleaning delicate surfaces, it is better to use a solution.
Anti-rust soda
Soda paste will help you against rust:
- A small amount of tea soda is mixed with water. Fluid is added as needed. As a result of mixing, a mass similar to thick sour cream should be obtained.
- A thin layer of the product is applied to the corrosive layer, kept for 2-3 hours.
- As a final cleaning step, the surface is treated with a toothbrush or a piece of aluminum foil.
And if rust or scale has formed in the kettle, then try it.
Soda for cleaning wallpaper and other surfaces
Soda powder is a good helper in the fight against various pollution. For cleaning wallpaper or other surfaces:
- For 1 l. warm water, pour 2 tsp. baking soda. Dampen the sponge and rub it on the fresh stain.
If the solution fails, use the "big guns":
- Make a concentrated paste of 1 teaspoon powder to 1 tbsp. water.
- Apply the paste to the stain, leave on for 5 minutes.
We clean the comb with soda
Baking soda can even be used to clean combs that regularly accumulate skin and hair oils. To clean the comb:
- Make a solution of 1 teaspoon of baking soda and 200 ml. water.
- Soak the comb for 1-1.5 hours. Rinse and dry.
Pet care soda
Few people know that baking soda helps not only in house cleaning, but also in caring for your pets. With the help of sodium bicarbonate, you can tidy up your pet's tangled coat:
- Mix 500 ml in a spray bottle. water and 2 tsp. soda powder.
- Spray on pet hair. Avoid contact with eyes, nose and ears of your pet.
- Brush the animal.
Baking soda will make the coat silkier and cleaner.
Also sodium bicarbonate solution is used to treat and disinfect toys, cages or trays:
- In 1 l. Dissolve 5 tablespoons of powder in water.
- Wash toys, cages and trays with this product. Rinse under running water.

Can baking soda be used instead of baking powder for cake?
You are planning to bake a cake and discover that there is no baking powder in the kitchen. What can be done to replace it?
Can baking soda be substituted for baking powder in cakes? This is a difficult substitute, but you can use baking soda instead of baking powder. To replace the baking powder with baking soda, make a 2 to 1 mixture of cream of tartar and baking soda. This mixture will be used instead of baking powder.
To replace baking soda with baking powder, use about 3 times more baking soda than required. No other ingredients are required for this replacement.
In today's article, we will tell you exactly how to create ideal substitutes.

Before we delve into this extremely frequently asked question, we first need to cover a few things.
First of all, which we will discuss in more detail later, baking soda and baking powder are not the same thing!
They are not even close to the chemical composition! That's why you can't replace them the same way.
They function differently and react differently to food, which ultimately affects the final result of the product in both taste and texture.
Which brings us to the next point; what type of cake do you want and what texture do you need to achieve?
This is perhaps the most important question to ask yourself when looking for a replacement!
Cakes are always fermented, and there are many ways to do this.
Unfortunately, or rather fortunately, these different methods produce different effects. That's why there are so many different types of cakes!
So using different leavening agents such as baking powder and baking soda will inevitably result in different cakes. However, this does not mean that it is impossible.
Today we will discuss the exact functions of these starters and how they work.
This will give you a better idea of what to replace them with and how they will affect your cake.
Baking Soda
Baking soda, also known as sodium bicarbonate or soda bicarbonate, is an alkaline powder. It is white in color and has a crystalline structure.
Being alkaline, it has a pH value above 7. In particular, baking soda has a pH of 8.3.
To activate baking soda and create a baking powder effect, her must be mixed with the acid ingredient and liquid .
When these ingredients combine, they create a chemical reaction that produces carbon dioxide, which allows the cake to rise and become fluffy in texture.
Baking soda is almost always paired with lemon juice or buttermilk cakes .
These are the most popular ingredients as they usually perform other useful functions in baking.
Baking powder
On the other hand, baking powder is already a full baking powder. By this we mean that you do not need to mix it with other ingredients for it to be activated.
Baking powder already contains sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) as well as acid which creates the baking powder effect.
This acid is usually cream of tartar or citric acid (both types of acid powder are often used in food). It is also white in color but has a much fluffier, smoother, and stronger texture.
You will also often find cornstarch in baking powder. Essentially, it acts as a buffer and prevents any reaction while storing baking powder.
To activate the baking powder, all you need to do is mix the powder (which, again, already contains the alkaline and acid components) with the liquid.
The fluid is what helps them combine and create carbon dioxide and eventually the leavening reaction.
9 available on the market0649 two types of baking powder ; single acting and double acting .
Recipes usually refer to double action baking powder because food manufacturers most often use single action versions.
Double action baking powder has two reactions. Firstly, the powder is mixed with a liquid at room temperature, and secondly, when the mixture is heated.
Simply put, the first reaction happens when you mix all the ingredients together, and the second reaction happens when you bake a cake or fry pancakes, for example.
The double action reaction is more favorable because it means that the leavening effect occurs over a longer period of time, resulting in a more airy product in the end.
Baking soda and baking powder
So, we already know that they are both baking powders, but they have different properties.
The first significant difference is their appearance. Baking soda has a more crystalline texture whereas baking powder has a more powdery texture.
Both of these ingredients are very white in color due to the processing they have undergone.
Baking soda is alkaline and must be mixed with an acidic ingredient and liquid to cause a chemical reaction in the cake.
On the other hand, baking powder is already an alkaline base as well as an acid, and only needs to be mixed with the liquid to create the reaction that produces the leavening effect.
So, given that they both have the same effect on cakes, the more important question should be when is baking soda used and when is baking powder used?
Baking soda is commonly used in recipes that already contain an acidic ingredient.
This can be anything: citrus juice (such as lemon or lime juice, even orange juice), buttermilk, tartar or citric acid.
Baking powder is commonly used in acid-free recipes because it already contains this element in its structure.
All cakes have some form of liquid so the acid part determines where it is used more. This is very useful to know because it will also help you recognize the wrong recipe.
If there is no acid and the recipe calls for baking soda, you know it won't rise.
What about recipes that call for both baking soda and baking powder?!
This usually happens when you have a recipe that has too much acid and needs to be balanced with alkali to create the perfect amount of reaction (leaving).
After all, it's all a balancing game!
If your recipe contains baking powder (which contains an acid) and lemon juice (which is a natural acid), it will not react strongly enough with the alkali in the baking powder.
Your cake will come out flat. So by adding more baking soda (alkaline), you balance out the reaction.
Is it interchangeable?
As you may have realized by now, baking is more science than cooking.
Different ingredients have different chemistry and need different things to create chemical reactions!
The bottom line is, is not as easy as replacing one with another .
If you don't have scientific equipment to help you measure pH and conversion correctly, the cake result won't be exactly the same.
However, this does not mean that it is impossible to make it work in a pinch.
Replacing baking soda with baking powder
Baking soda is much stronger than baking powder.
If you want to replace baking soda with baking powder, you will need almost three times the amount of baking powder.
This means, for example, that for every teaspoon of baking soda you need to replace, you need three teaspoons of baking powder.
This will create about the same reaction when it comes to fermenting cakes. It has a replacement ratio of one to three (1:3).
You don't need any additional ingredients for this replacement to work.
Replacing baking powder with baking soda
For this replacement, you will definitely need additional ingredients to help create the right reaction.
Remember, baking powder already contains an acid that will help cause a reaction; baking soda doesn't have this acid, but it's definitely needed.
In our opinion, the easiest way to add acid to a recipe is cream of tartar.
A good rule of thumb for this substitution is to add 2 teaspoons of cream of tartar and one teaspoon of baking soda to (2 parts of cream of tartar and one part of baking soda) .
You can then use this mixture and measure out the exact amount of "baking powder" the recipe calls for.
So if a recipe calls for 1 tablespoon of baking powder, use 1 tablespoon of this homemade mixture.
You can store leftover powder in a resealable or resealable bag or container in a dark, cool place.
Effect of Baking Soda and Baking Powder on Cake
Both baking soda and baking powder are leavening agents and will help make cake .
But you need the perfect amount of to create the perfect rise (more baking powder doesn't mean more lift).
We now know that when these ingredients react with others, they produce carbon dioxide, which creates gas and allows the rest of the ingredients to rise and create a fluffy texture.
But what happens when you don't have the right ratios? It is much easier to recognize the bad qualities in a cake than it is to recognize the good ones.
But once you recognize them, you can easily change the recipe next time to create a better product.
As a guide, we usually work with about 1 teaspoon of baking powder per cup of baking flour.
We also use about ¼ teaspoon of baking soda per cup of baking flour (with acid, of course).
These are just general rules of thumb, but they will give you an idea of whether you are using enough to create a meaningful life.
What went wrong?
When you've tried your best to follow the replacement rules exactly, but something isn't right, it can be very frustrating. Here are some common mistakes.
Bad taste? If you use too much baking soda in a recipe (even if it helps to loosen the cake) and don't neutralize the lye with acid, this can leave a very soapy or metallic taste - disgusting!
Another common mistake is that some types of cake dough cannot be left to stand, especially when using double action baking powder.
This is because the first sourdough reaction occurs when the ingredients are mixed.
Leaving it standing will essentially "blow out" any air pockets that formed during the first reaction, and the second reaction won't make a nice fluffy cake.
Instead, you will end up with a flat and dense cake.
Finally, if your cake is flat and dense, may be the result of using too little baking powder or other ingredients in a dough that is too heavy.
For example, almond flour cake will require much more baking powder because almond flour is heavier than cake flour.
Troubleshooting baking soda and baking powder
Result | Cause | |
---|---|---|
Soapy taste, regardless of rise | Too much baking soda, not enough acid | 5 Metallic taste regardless of liftToo much baking soda, not enough acid |
Flat and tight (when using baking powder) | Dough left to stand Too little baking powder Heavy ingredients in recipe | |
Flat and hard (when using baking soda) | Not enough acid to cause a reaction. Too little baking powder. Heavy ingredients in the recipe. | |
Flat and dense (when using baking soda and baking powder) | There is no good balance of acid and alkali, so there is a bad carbon dioxide reaction. |
Related Questions
Let's cover a few more loose ends so you can make your substitutions perfect.
Can baking soda be used instead of baking powder for pancakes?
Pancakes usually use baking powder as the leavening agent because it does not contain acidic ingredients.
So, if you need to replace baking powder with baking soda, it's actually easier than you think .
First, replace milk with buttermilk or sour milk. This will act as the acid base liquid needed for the alkaline baking soda to react.
You can then use ¾ teaspoon of baking soda for every tablespoon of baking powder called for in the recipe - basically a third of the amount.
Do these substitutions affect the baking time of cakes?
We never noticed that any of these substitutions affect the baking time of cakes or any other product for that matter.
Can these replacements work on every type of cake?
Theoretically yes, you can definitely use these substitutes for any type of cake. However, some cakes will require careful planning and proportioning.
As an example we already mentioned, if you have a cake that already has acid in it and need to use baking powder, you can reduce the amount of acid or powder.
Otherwise there is not enough alkali to cause a reaction.
The bottom line is that is possible if you are careful to replace correctly.
Understand the reactions and relationships needed to get them, and most importantly, learn what you need to do.
Do these substitutions affect the texture and flavor of the cake?
As with cooking time, we did not necessarily notice a dramatic change in texture or flavor .
The only time this has a noticeable effect is if you use the wrong quantities or replacement rates.
How do you know if baking soda and baking powder have gone bad?
To make the right substitution, you need to make sure your products are still good and actually still have the power to generate a good response.
