Learn how to make SO EASY avocado puree for your baby—and the best way to prevent it from browning so you can store leftovers for later.

Avocado Puree

Avocado is a favorite first food for baby since it’s not very likely to be allergenic, has lots of healthy fats, and has a silky texture that’s great for new eaters. I love making avocado puree to share with baby since there’s no cooking involved and it’s so super easy to do with either a blender or a fork!

Ingredients You Need

To make this avocado puree, you’ll just need ripe avocado and a fresh lemon, if you plan to store some for later. So easy!

How to Choose a Perfect Avocado

Look for an avocado that’s firm to the touch but has a little give, which indicates ripeness. A very soft avocado may be too ripe with brown spots by the time you get it home and eat it. So it shouldn’t feel as hard as a rock, but firm with a little softness.

Step by Step Instructions

Here’s a look at the easy process involved in making this homemade baby food.

  1. Halve a ripe avocado, remove the pit, and scoop out the flesh.
  2. Add to a blender.
  3. Blend, adding breastmilk, formula, or water if needed or desired to thin.
  4. Serve immediately.

TIP: This is a great puree to share with baby, so if you plan to have some, skip adding breastmilk or formula.

How to Store Avocado Puree for Later

To store in the fridge, place puree into small food storage containers and squeeze fresh lemon juice over top. You’ll want any exposed part of the puree to be in contact with some lemon juice to prevent browning.

To freeze, stir 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice into the mash and spoon into an ice cube tray. Freeze. Transfer frozen cubes into a freezer storage bag for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the fridge in an airtight container. (You can also freeze directly in a freezer bag.)

Tips for Making the Best Avocado Puree

  • To do this with a fork, place as much or as little avocado onto a plate. Mash with a fork to reach the desired consistency, thinning with water, breastmilk or formula as desired.
  • To store in the fridge, place puree into small food storage containers and squeeze fresh lemon juice over top. You’ll want any exposed part of the puree to be in contact with some lemon juice to prevent browning.
  • To freeze, stir 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice into the mash and spoon into an ice cube tray. Freeze. Transfer frozen cubes into a freezer storage bag for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the fridge in an airtight container. (You can also freeze directly in a freezer bag.)
  • Leave as a thicker mash for older babies.
  • Spread onto toast sticks (about the size of your finger) for BLW-style feeding or offer a preloaded spoon.
  • Mix with Banana Puree, Sweet Potato Puree, Pureed Beans, Apple Puree, or any other food you like.

Homemade Baby Food Recipes: Avocado Puree

About 2 months ago, we gave Layla her first solid food: Avocado! Since then she has had a variety of fruits and veggies: Sweet potato, Butternut squash, Zucchini, Carrot, Fuji Apples, Plums, Pears, Bananas, Green Beans, Peas, Spinach, Broccoli, Pumpkin, Apricot… and we’ve also given her Oatmeal and Organic Whole Milk Plain Yogurt. She has turned into a wonderful eater! Gobbles up almost everything we give her (peas and green beans have to be disguised in yogurt with a little bit of pear, but then she downs them like you wouldn’t believe).

And since I’ve been making all of her food at home from scratch, I thought I’d start a Baby Food Recipes section on my blog!

I’ll be adding the baby food recipes in the order that we introduced them to Layla – to the extent that I can remember 🙂 Avocado was definitely first – because it was the easiest, and because it’s so nutritious for your little ones.

1/5th of an avocado has only 50 calories but 20 vitamins and minerals! Talk about nutrient dense. Avocados also contain:

  • Folate
  • Fiber
  • Potassium
  • Vitamin E
  • Iron
  • Healthy fats that help with brain and nervous system development

I mashed up the avocado raw, and fed it directly to her mixed with a little bit of breast milk (you can also mix it with formula or water to thin it out at first). Here’s how she reacted 🙂

The first time she was like “what are you giving me??” but soon she couldn’t get enough avocado. It’s definitely one of her favorites. And since avocado gets oxidized so easily, I actually tried freezing it and it worked great!

I used these Mumi & Bubi

ice cube trays for freezing. I love them because they come with a cover, a recipe book, and the cubes are super easy to get out. One ice cube = 1oz of food. And once I started making this puree in bulk, I used a Vitamix to puree large quantities of it at the same time – which was super convenient!

Also, if you can afford it, I’d recommend using 100% organic ingredients for your baby’s food. That way you can leave the peels on various fruits and veggies (e.g. you won’t have to peel apples and pears before pureeing them), and it’s much more nutritious for your baby.

Of course, there will be times when you’re on the go and need a healthy pre-made option for your little one. And in those cases, I’d recommend buying one of the pouches on my list of the healthiest baby food pouches!

Below is my recipe for super simple avocado: a perfect first food for babies!

3 avocado recipes for kids: and a burger!

Life hacks for those who love avocados but don't know how to cook them.

Avocados are grilled, added to brownie batter, used in sauces, soups and more. We share ideas from the new book “Useful avocado. 40 Avocado Recipes from Appetizers to Desserts from KhlebSol publishing house.

First a couple of recommendations from the author of the book, culinary specialist Olga Ivenskaya:

If you want to make guacamole, cream soup or pastries with avocados, choose Haas, Lamb Haas or Pinkerton varieties - they are softer. If you decide to bake avocados, cook sandwiches, rolls or salad - opt for the Reed variety with a firmer pulp.

To bring an unripe avocado to its condition, put it in a paper bag (not in plastic - the fruit should “breathe”) and leave it at room temperature, preferably in a dark place. The hard fruit will ripen in 4-6 days, slightly soft - in 2-3 days. To speed up the process, place a banana or an apple in the same bag.

Do you want to save a ripe avocado? Then vice versa, wrap tightly in a plastic bag or place in an airtight plastic container and refrigerate for a maximum of 3-4 days.

If you want to keep the already cut fruit , various sites suggest methods like sprinkling with lemon juice, but this does not work in practice. Take it for granted: if the “alligator pear”, as the avocado is also called, is cut, you need to immediately either eat it or put it into cooking.

Meal options:

Baked avocado with egg (page 17)

The simplest dish, but nutritious and very tasty. It can be a starting point for culinary creativity: if you sprinkle it with grated cheese or dry fried onions, serve it with fresh salad, fried bacon, lightly fried shrimp, toast, and so on - it all depends on your imagination and what your family loves.

Serves 2-4:
2 very large ripe avocados
4 eggs
salt and pepper to taste

  1. Cut the avocado in half lengthwise and remove the pits. Scoop out some of the pulp with a teaspoon so that a whole raw egg fits into the resulting “cups”. Place the halves in a small baking dish. Preheat oven to 200°C.2. Salt and pepper the avocado. Gently pour an egg into each half, being careful not to break the yolk. Place the avocado tin in the oven for about 15 minutes. At the finished egg, the protein should seize, and the yolk should remain fluid.3. Remove the egg and avocado from the oven and serve immediately.

Life hack : If you want to make smaller portions for children, take a medium-sized avocado and quail eggs.

Avocado Burger (page 30)

As a burger patty, we suggest using fried avocado - breading will give the necessary texture. Kids will be surprised how healthy fast food can be.

Serves 2:
1 large ripe avocado
2 tbsp. l. whole wheat flour
1 egg
4 tbsp. l. breadcrumbs
cooking oil
2 thin slices of easy-melting cheese
2 burger buns (whole grain is best)
2 lettuce leaves
2 rounds of ripe oxheart tomatoes
a few rings of sweet red onion
1 tbsp. l. good quality mayonnaise
1⁄2 tsp. Dijon mustard
salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste

1. Slice the avocado in half crosswise, remove one half, then strike the pit hard with the blade of a large sharp knife and carefully remove the pit. Cut off the central part of the avocado circles about 2 cm thick, remove the peel. (You can also cut the avocado in a more familiar way along and cook the halves of the avocado circles - this is unprincipled, do it as you like)

2. Dredge the avocado slices in the flour seasoned with salt and pepper, then in the egg, then in the breadcrumbs. Fry until golden brown in vegetable oil in a pan or deep fryer. Place a slice of cheese on hot circles so that it melts slightly.

3. Toast the burger halves cut side down in a dry frying pan. Arrange a lettuce leaf each on the bottom of the buns, then a slice of fried avocado and cheese, a slice of tomato, and sweet onion rings.

4. Spread the top halves of the bun on the cut side with mayonnaise mixed with mustard. Cover and serve the burgers while the avocado is still warm.

Vitamina de abacachi smoothie (page 91)

This nutritious drink is popular in Brazil, where it is prepared everywhere. Here is a basic recipe that you can vary to your taste. The addition of salt may seem odd, but a small amount has been proven to bring out the sweetness, so be sure to give it a try.

Serves 2:
1 medium ripe avocado
200 ml whole milk
60 ml condensed milk
1 tbsp. l. full-fat sour cream
pinch of salt
sugar optional

1. Remove the pits and skin from the avocado and coarsely chop the flesh.

2. Place the avocado in a blender, add chilled milk, condensed milk, sour cream, a pinch of salt and, if desired, a little sugar.

3. Beat the mixture until smooth. Pour into glasses and serve immediately.

Life hack : If your child has lactose intolerance, you can make a vegetarian version of the drink: replace cow's milk and sour cream with coconut milk, and condensed milk with honey.
