Best Toddler and Baby Puffs (Safe, Nutritious Options)

Learn which baby puffs are best for your baby and toddler, when you can introduce them, what to look for at the store, and how to buy puffs for babies with the most nutrition possible.

Baby Puffs

Puffs, and the pixie dust-like debris that they leave behind, seem to be a rite of passage for babies and toddlers of this generation. They are easy for little fingers to pick up once the pincer grasp is mastered, come in vibrant colors and fun shapes, and are a super easy snack to take on the go. Plus, they dissolve easily in baby’s mouth, making them a good early finger food with a low risk for choking.

There are some factors to consider when choosing them, though, specifically the main ingredient with which they are made. Many of these classic baby puffs are made with rice, and some government testing has shown concerning levels of arsenic and other heavy metals. Read more about the specifics of this issue, with a helpful breakdown of the science and context for the data about in this Parent Data newsletter from Emily Oster.

The easiest way to ensure safety when feeding babies puffs (or any baby food) in regards to the heavy metals issue is to vary the grains and foods you offer over the course of a week. Try to avoid serving the same foods, or the same brands of foods, every single day.

To help you sort through the options on the market for baby puffs, know more about the ingredients, learn how they can be useful as a baby snack, and more, read on below.

When can you give your baby puffs?

Puffs baby food fill the aisles at most grocery stores and you can plan to pick up a container once baby can pick up smaller foods with their fingers—known as the “pincer grasp.” This usually happens around 8 or 9 months.

Are puffs good for babies?

The nutrition in baby puffs will vary from brand to brand, so you’ll need to read the labels. Most baby puffs are very low in nutrients because they are often made with rice flour and are puffed…and therefore full of air. They usually have a mild yet pleasant flavor and are a fine food to serve in the mix with a range of other foods. Read more about why you shouldn’t overdo it on puffs or rice-based foods for babies here.

Are puffs a choking hazard?

Many parents worry about whether a baby can choke on baby puffs, but they are formulated to dissolve quickly in baby’s mouth so the risk for choking is low. As with any food that you offer, keep a drink nearby and help baby to take sips. The liquid will help her move around any food that may get stuck in her mouth. You can also wait until baby is older if you are more comfortable going that route.

TIP: If your baby or toddler tends to push a lot of puffs (or any other food) into her mouth at once, be sure to limit how much you hand over and refill her high chair tray or bowl as needed.

Best Baby Puffs to Buy

Here are an assortment of my go-to puffs for baby. There is a range as far as ingredients and flavors, so be sure to check the labels. All of these dissolve easily and are designed for infants starting around 8/9 months unless otherwise noted. Remember to vary the types of puffs you buy and to try not to serve them every day or for every snack time.

Variety is the best way to ensure baby has access to a range of nutrients.

Best Puffs Made Without Rice

These are some awesome options for baby snacks that dissolve quickly but aren’t made with a base of rice (which has the highest levels of potentially problematic heavy metals). They are great flavor-wise and are a nice way to vary the ingredients in the puffs we buy.

Amara Yogurt Smoothie Melts

A newer option to hit the market, these melts are made with organic fruits and vegetables, no artificial flavors or artificial sweeteners, plus coconut milk for a melt-in-baby’s-mouth texture. They have fresh flavor and come in a resealable bag. These are great as a non-grain option, too. (Sponsored link)

PuffWorks Baby Puffs

I love these puffs since they can actually be given a little earlier to BLW-fed babies since the pieces are big enough for little hands to pick up and hold safely. The flavor is really great too. (It’s important to introduce potential allergens like peanuts when baby starts solids and these are an easy way to do it.)

Sprout Organic Plant Puffs

These have a base of sorghum, fruit juice, and powdered produce, which is a nice variation from rice-based puffs.

Serenity Kids Grain-Free Puffs

These puffs, come in both sweet and savory flavors (which I love!) and are another new option to consider. They’re made with healthy fats, produce, and other ingredients like cassava flour.

TIP: Find my Master List of Baby Snacks here for more easy foods to feed babies.

Rice-Based Baby Puffs

These are all widely available at most supermarkets and big-box stores and are an easy snack for babies—but only as an occasional snack. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that we aim to serve a variety of foods to mix up the nutrients, flavors, and textures, and to avoid exposure to large amounts of heavy metals that can be present in baby food.

(They can actually be present in all food, since they are present in the soil much of our food is grown in, but they are more of a potential issue for babies since their bodies are smaller and they are in a more rapid period of brain development).

Rice has more potential than other grains to be high in arsenic, which is why I’ve broken these into their own section. Read more about the actual risks here in Parent Data. Emily’s breakdown confirms my belief that these are fine in the mix as an occasional snack during this short window of early finger foods, but of course you can decide for yourself.

Mission MightyMe Peanut Puffs

With a sweet star shape, these peanut puffs are designed for babies who can pick up small pieces with their fingers and have a nice peanut flavor. We love these as an easy way to continually expose babies and toddlers to peanuts, which we want to do to help lower the overall rates of food allergies. (Always talk to your pediatrician with concerns about food allergies.) Save 20% with my code YUMMY20.

They even have two varieties with fruit, including natural banana flavor and strawberry.

Happy Baby Superfood Puffs

These melt-in-baby’s-mouth puffs are fortified with essential vitamins and minerals to help make sure babies get the nutrition they need. They’re organic and come in 7 flavors including Apple & Broccoli, Banana & Pumpkin, and Strawberry & Beet. Their airtight container helps to keep them fresh at room temperature after opening.

Plum Organic Puffs

This is another of the top brands of baby puffs that you’ll see in natural and big box stores. We love the simple ingredients and the range of flavors. And that they have both a fruit and a veggie in the mix, so you can look for flavors you prefer such as spinach, sweet potato, or even apple puree.

Gerber Graduates Puffs

With a sweet star shape, these puffs may be a little more available than the other organic brands—and are still made with whole grain goodness and without artificial ingredients. We like the blueberry flavor. Gerber also makes an organic version.

Healthy Natural Baby Puffs

In addition to the puffs that are made specifically for babies, I also love puffed whole grain cereal as a nutritious option made from a variety of grains including whole wheat, kamut, corn, and rice. They are a little crunchier, yet still dissolve fairly quickly. These are free from added sugars and cane sugar, and they are typically just the grain. You can soften them in plain nondairy milk, if desired, to ensure they are nice and soft for baby.

  • Puffed Kamut
  • Millet Puffs
  • Puffed Corn
  • Puffed Rice
  • Puffed Wheat

TIP: Look for these puffs in the cereal aisle of your supermarket or big-box store.

Homemade Baby Puffs Recipe

If you want to try making baby puffs at home, this recipe for Kale Apple Puffs from my friend Barbara looks like a great place to start. You can also try my homemade Yogurt Melts.

How to Keep Puffs Fresh

Depending on how quickly you go through a container of puffs, you may want to transfer them to a tighter reusable storage container. They seem to get stale (and soft) fairly fast, especially when the weather is humid, so put them into a mason jar with a tight top or another container that seals well. Many of the containers they come in don’t have airtight seals.

My baby food storage containers may help for on-the-go snacking, too.

Best Tips for Serving and Buying Puffs

  • Serve a small amount at at time if baby is putting too many into her mouth at once when self-feeding.
  • Change up the flavors you buy to expose baby to a range of nutrients and flavors.
  • Change up the brands you buy to avoid baby getting too hooked on only one kind—or too much potential exposure to heavy metals in rice-based products.
  • Consider puffs made with other grains besides rice, or try Yogurt Melts or Smoothie Melts.
  • Try not to rely on them at snack time too much since they are relatively low in nutrition. Pair with another easy baby snack to make sure baby has enough to eat.
  • Don’t expect baby puffs to keep a baby full for that long—remember, they are puffed up with air!
  • Look for gluten-free and dairy-free options as needed, though most of these do qualify for that.

Reasons to Love these Frozen Yogurt Melts

  • Simple 2-ingredient recipe
  • Cold treats for soothing teething pain for babies or toddlers
  • Healthy – with no added sugar
  • Helps older babies and toddlers work on their pincer grasp
  • Easy to change up flavors
  • Great for picky eaters
  • Easy to make a big batch and freeze for quick snacks
  • Can be made dairy-free as needed

Ingredients

Make sure to read the recipe card below for full ingredients and instructions!

  • Yogurt: try to use a thicker plain whole milk yogurt such as Greek or Australian style, so the melts will stay in their disc shapes while freezing. You can also use a plant-based yogurt if you prefer. If your yogurt gets too thin while working with it, simply put it back into the fridge for 10-15 minutes to firm back up.
  • Baby Puree: you can use any store-bought or homemade baby food purees that you like.

Health Benefits of Yogurt for Babies

Yogurt boasts many health benefits for babies since it is full of nutrients babies need for healthy development.

  • Calcium- which is needed for growing bones and teeth
  • Full of fat (if buying full fat or whole milk yogurt, which is recommended)- essential for brain development, metabolism and the immune system
  • Probiotics- helps to establish a healthy microbiome in baby’s rapidly developing gut
  • Protein- to help support muscle growth and development

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone mat.
  2. In a small bowl, mix the yogurt and baby food puree until completely incorporated.
  3. Spoon the yogurt mixture into a resealable baggie or piping bag and cut the very end of the bag off. At any point your yogurt blend becomes too thin or runny; simply put the baggie back into the fridge for a couple of minutes to harden back up.
  4. Squeeze small round discs into rows onto the baking sheet. When the baking sheet is full, place the baking sheet into the freezer for 4 hours or overnight.
  5. Pop the melts off of the parchment paper and store them in an air-tight container. These melts do melt rather quickly so it’s best to only take out a couple at a time.

Feeding Tips for Baby

  • Let the yogurt melts sit at room temperature for 1-2 minutes to thaw a little before giving them to your baby. If the yogurt melts are too solid, there is a risk of choking. You can also check and see how quickly they melt in your mouth before giving them to your baby.
  • You can also put a few melts in a mesh or silicone teether.
  • Offer your baby plenty of opportunities for teething toys, as these encourage jaw and tongue movements necessary for chewing. And getting into the habit of brushing teeth regularly not only helps with good oral health, but also provides sensory awareness for oral motor skills.
  • Start setting up consistency and structure for meal times from the beginning. This can include when (timing) and where you offer foods, as well as providing a variety in what you offer. These will help your baby develop the foundation for recognizing hunger and fullness cues.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are yogurt melts good for babies?

Yes! These two ingredient yogurt melts have no added sugar, plus they are a cold treat that can help ease teething pain. They are perfect for babies around 8+ months.

Can baby choke on yogurt melts?

As with any food for your baby, always supervise when giving yogurt melts. We recommend letting the yogurt melts sit at room temperature for 1-2 minutes to thaw a little before giving them to your baby. If the melts are too solid, there is a risk of choking. You can check and see how quickly they melt in your own mouth before giving them to your baby.

Can toddlers eat yogurt melts?

Yes! In fact, yogurt melts can be a fun and subtle way to introduce new flavors to a toddler who’s in the midst of a picky eating phase. You can create all kinds of fun colors and flavor combinations, like spinach + banana or mixed berry.

How to Store Yogurt Melts

Yogurt melts should be stored in an air-tight container in the freezer for up to 4 months.

Purees you Can Use for this Recipe

The wonderful thing about these baby yogurt melts is that you can use leftover homemade baby food puree. Or you can make the process even easier and use store-bought purees. Here are some of our favorite homemade baby food purees:

  • Peach Baby Puree
  • Creamy Mango-licious Baby Food Puree
  • Spinach + Apple Baby Food Puree
  • Blueberry Baby Food Puree
  • Apple, Raspberry + Vanilla Baby Food Puree
  • Banana, Cherry + Beet Baby Food Puree

The flavors I used for these yogurt melts are:

  • Red: steamed beets and strawberries
  • Orange: steamed carrots and mango
  • Yellow: mango and banana
  • Green: steamed apples and kale
  • Purple: steamed apples and blueberries

Recipe Tips

  • For toddlers over the age of one, you can add in a teaspoon of honey for a sweeter treat.
  • Use a spatula instead of your hands to help avoid melting while transferring to a freezer-safe container.
  • These creamy treats do melt rather quickly, so it’s best to take out only a few at a time when eating.
  • 1/2 cup plain whole milk yogurt
  • 1-2 tbsp baby food puree, homemade or store-bought
  • Prep: Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or use a silicone mat.

  • Mix: In a small bowl, mix together the Greek yogurt and baby food puree until completely incorporated.

  • Prep Pipping Bag: Spoon the yogurt mixture into a resealable baggie or piping bag and cut the very end of the bag off. At any point your yogurt blend becomes too thin or runny, simply put the baggie back into the fridge for a couple of minutes to harden back up.

  • Dot: Squeeze small round discs into rows onto the baking sheet. When the baking sheet is full, place the baking sheet into the freezer for 4 hours or overnight to harden.

  • Store: Pop the melts off of the baking tray and store them in an air-tight container. These melts do melt rather quickly so it's best to only take out a couple at a time.

Age: 8+ months. For toddlers over the age of one, you can add in a teaspoon of honey for a sweeter treat.

Flavors: I made several different flavors of these melts at the same time, but you can easily stick with one flavor of melts to save you time and make less dishes.

Storage: in an air-tight container in the freezer for up to 4 months

Vegetable palm oil harm and benefit to the body. Is palm oil in baby food bad for newborns and infants.

Palm oil is on everyone's lips these days. Scandals with cheeses, in which it was discovered instead of milk fat, pediatricians sounding the alarm opposing baby food with stearin, many food industries willingly changing traditional sunflower oil to exotic palm oil - all this attracted close attention not only from the public, but also from ordinary people. consumers to a tropical product.

And although there are a lot of screams about the dangers of palm oil for health and the inadmissibility of its use as a replacement for familiar products, it is worth looking at it objectively. Still, it is not for nothing that this product has been produced and eaten for several millennia. And only then, having become acquainted with its useful and harmful properties, we can safely form our own unbiased opinion.

Composition of palm oil

What is palm oil made of? It is obtained from the fruits of the oil palm tree, grown in almost all tropical countries of the world. It is important to distinguish between palm oil and palm kernel oil. The first is obtained by pressing the fleshy part of the fruit, and the second - from the seeds of the same palm. Accordingly, the properties and cost of these species are different.

Vegetable palm oil, whose properties are quite contradictory, is one of the oldest, produced on an industrial scale. Already in ancient Egypt, this product was actively traded, supplied from the central regions of the mainland. Its main feature is the heterogeneity of the composition. Like any vegetable oil, the chemical composition of palm oil is a mixture of several vegetable fats, the main share of which is stearin and olein.

Stearin is the solid fraction of butter that melts at 50 degrees Celsius. Olein is a liquid fraction, melting at 21 degrees. Accordingly, its physical properties depend on which fat is more in a particular portion of the oil.

Benefits of palm oil

The chemical composition of palm oil contains several substances that are very beneficial for our body. First of all, these are tocotrienols - components of vitamin E. They are very powerful natural antioxidants and immunomodulators, much more effective than tocopherols. At the same time, tocopherols are found in all vegetable oils, and tocotrienols are found only in palm and rice bran oils.

Further, the benefit of palm oil is that it contains a large amount of vitamin A, which is just as useful for maintaining immunity as vitamin E, and supports vision and the skeletal system of the body.

What is palm oil good for the body yet? It is very important that it does not increase the level of cholesterol in the blood. In relation to cholesterol, its properties are neutral: in its composition there are practically no fatty acids that can be converted into cholesterol in the body.

And it is especially important that palm oil, the beneficial properties of which go far beyond the food industry, is widely used in medicine and cosmetology. How useful is palm oil in these areas? It well moisturizes and softens the skin, improves the condition of the hair, and has proven itself as a component of therapeutic ointments and gels.

This is where the main healing properties of the product end. It's time to find out if palm oil is harmful?

Palm oil is harmful

It can only be considered truly harmful when it is added to various baby foods.

Why is palm oil in baby food bad for newborns and babies? The fact is that in the intestines of a child, some fats from its composition can bind with calcium from other products and turn into indigestible substances. Such compounds are excreted from the child's body, and with regular use of palm oil, he begins to lose both the fats he needs to build various tissues, and calcium, which is one of the most important elements for normal development.

In addition, palm oil stearin is particularly difficult to digest due to the fact that even in the stomach it does not melt completely. This harmful property can lead to digestive disorders and exacerbation of certain diseases of the gastrointestinal tract.

As you can see, palm oil can be equally harmful and beneficial in different cases. Therefore, in order not to suffer from it, but also not to worry too much about the integrity of manufacturers, we recommend that you follow these tips.

Palm oil products - can I eat?

1. Do not buy products that, according to the production technology, must use butter, but palm oil or stearin is indicated along with it (or instead of it).

These products include condensed milk, cheeses, ice cream, various creams and confectionery. Even if the manufacturer notes both palm and butter on the packaging with them, be sure that there is much more of the former in the composition of such a product, although in theory it should not be contained at all.

2. Do not buy baby food with palm oil. It is better to overpay money to a conscientious manufacturer and buy milk formulas without palm oil than to take them five times the amount to doctors.

3. If for some reason you decide to replace creamy or other vegetable products with them, be prepared for the fact that the dishes prepared with them will need to be eaten hot. Cooled, culinary masterpieces will be covered with a very unaesthetic white film of stearin.

And then you have to choose between palm oil and butter. Just remember that palm oil will not be cheaper for you than ordinary sunflower oil, and most dishes are much more reasonable to cook with our traditional vegetable oil.
