Super Baby Food by Ruth Yaron- Babywise Mom

by valplowman

All about the book Super Baby Food by Ruth Yaron. How to get baby started off healthy and how to make healthy baby food for your baby.

Since starting this blog, I have often heard great things about the book Super Baby Food by Ruth Yaron.

I just finished reading it and WOW! I love this book. Really, really love it. It is 560 pages of information, followed by another 33 pages for bibliography and an index. When I say it is information, I mean it is full of information. There is no wasted real estate in this book; each word is written to provide information.

As I was gushing over this book, my husband pointed out that not all people would find the same joy from reading it as I did. Like I said, it is full of information. It is practical and has very little, if any, fluff. That is my sort of book! Yes, of course I love my fiction books, but when I am getting a reference book like this, I want information. This reads much like a textbook would. Many (okay, most) will perhaps find that boring. Yaron has done her research. Certain parts of the book can get really technical; Yaron realizes this and tells readers to skip to page X if they don’t want to read about certain topics. But realize that you are getting every penny you spent out of this book.

The author seems very down to earth to me. She has written the book so that you don’t have to read every word to understand what she is talking about. She has it cross-referenced throughout the book. She also gives advice for various levels of making baby food–it isn’t an “all or nothing” system.

Are you wondering what is in this book? Let me give you a list:

  • Feeding Your Baby: This section includes information on which foods to introduce first at at what ages certain foods are safe. She also includes amounts of food a baby should be eating at various stages. I know that many moms worry about this. Included in this is serving sizes. She also includes amounts of liquid baby should drink each day. Information about the digestive system is also included. Yaron discusses finger foods, snacks (healthy!), teething foods, table foods, and more. She also discusses feeding your baby month by month.
  • Preparation and Storage of Food: Yaron assumes the reader knows nothing about cooking. She describes how to buy, clean, store, prepare, freeze, reheat, and feed fruits and veggies to your baby. She goes over food safety so you can safely handle foods.
  • Recipes: There is a section on recipes to make foods for your toddler and family that are very healthy and easy to prepare.
  • Fun Stuff: This section has many ideas for having fun with your toddler, from decorating foods to recipes/instructions for arts and crafts, homemade toys, and homemade gifts.
  • References and Appendices: This section has information on the nutritional values of different foods. She also has recipes for homemade cleaning products. There is also a section on Nutrition that explains how the body uses different nutrients.

I definitely think this book is worth owning. I give it my highest praises and recommendation.

Has recipie ideas as kids get older, and ideas for money saving ideas for crafts and cleaning etc. Vegitarian and green living freindly.

While I had good intensions when I bought this book, I ended up using it solely for the 'when to introduce certain foods' schedules in the book (which are very helpful). This is a dense book, with a ton of information: recipes, nutrition charts, craft ideas and homemade household cleaners.

I never did end up making the Super Baby Food.

Lots of great ideas and the author has a good heart. It's just difficult to believe one could find the time to do all of it, or that one's baby would go along with the idea.

Excellent book for teaching yourself how to make your own baby food and SAVE TONS OF MONEY. It' actually pretty easy and you don't need to go as in-depth as the author does. But it does provide excellent information, indepth nutrition guides, cooking preparation tips, and tons of recipes.

This book has way more info than most people will need but everyone with babies can find something useful in it. I had several baby feeding type of books when my kids were babies and this is the one I came back to again and again. It has very useful tips. I bought it new at full price and definately got my monies worth.

This is my favorite "how to" for basics for making my grandson's baby food, especially the stage 1 variety. I really like that it gives details for each food, whether
it needs to be cooked or not, if it can be frozen, and even how long the food can be frozen. Although there are many recipes for later, just having the basics to start out has been very helpful. I have other baby food books, but this one has details that the others don't, and if I was going to keep only 1, this would be it.

If you are trying to avoid food allergies in your child, there is much more current research on this subject than is provided in this book. Talk with your pediatrician about the recommended timing and sequence of adding foods to your baby's diet. In her disclaimer, the author advises that the reader consult a pediatrician or registered dietitian if professional assistance is needed; this message should be emphasized more throughout the book, particularly regarding guidance if your baby seems to be having any type of feeding or diet problem.

While there is a lot of great information in this book, the layout is ridiculous. It is very hard to find what you are looking for. The words are jammed together in some places and there are a few pages of just running text with a small bullet dividing different ideas. If you have the patience to sift through this book (with a hungry child, no less) by all means get this book.

Additionally, some of the recipes are a bit over the top. I get wanting your child to eat healthy and have wholesome, fresh foods and whole grains. But there is a recipe for super flour that you are suppose to use... what I'm saying is the book gets pretty involved. Some of the ideas for getting your child to eat are handy (when you can find them in the book), but some are so, well, absurd for parents to do for their 1+ year old child. A watermelon basket comes to mind, but there are others.

The book does have a crazy amount of info and ideas so I gave it 3 stars. It's not the book's fault that I don't have the patience to sift through it.

Oh yeah. Lots of typos. The book retails at 19.99 US dollars and I would be angry if I spent 20 bucks on a book with this many typos. But that's just me.

Great information in this book. The reason I did not give it fully five stars is that she almost goes in to too much detail (e. g. how to get air out of baggies). However, overall, this book is extremely useful and the information valuable.

Overall, some good ideas and recipes. However, I disagree with her reasons for not including meat in the Super Baby Food diet--I believe this is way off-base. Meat is good and important for children to have in their diets.
Great for fruit, vegetable, dairy recipes. Some info on meat as requested by her readers, but only a few meat recipes.

Cauliflower "Spoon in the palm" I am a longtime fan of this brand. I won’t say that there is no better, but for the price-quality it is the best option. It is also convenient that there are vegetables, fruits, meat (a very wide choice) and even juices at once. For me, as for any mother, this is important. Now half of the children have all sorts of allergies, so...0004 The best vegetable puree - that's all it takes to say the least. Purees made from Gerber are our lower love. We ate - for the taste is not strong. The consistency is already adequate, and not a mess, like a child choking, small pieces, lower relish, a good warehouse, plus - a right European organic.

good tender porridge Bibikasha is our first porridge during the introduction of complementary foods. I was afraid to start with it, since rice strengthens, I was worried that constipation would appear, but all fears were in vain, there were no changes in the digestive tract. The porridge is very tender, with a good composition and is bred without any problems.
