Menu for a child from 1 year to 5 years (version 1958) - table for 2 weeks

I wonder how it was recommended to feed children in the Soviet Union? What did the future builders of communism have to eat in order to build this bright future?

Living in the 21st century, it is very curious to look into the past and find out how ordinary people lived in the 20th century, say, in 1958. This is an interesting question. On the one hand, during the existence of the USSR, there have been many events in both domestic and world history that did not contribute to a full and balanced diet. Revolution, Civil War, collectivization and famine in the 30s of the XX century, the Great Patriotic War, the difficult restoration of the country… On the other hand, the Soviet Union has always declared a happy childhood as a guarantee of the prosperity of society. I immediately recall the catchphrase "All the best for children!". nine0003

Baby Food Book 1958

So, what could the inhabitants of the Land of Soviets read in 1958 in the book "Children's Nutrition"? The publication, by the way, had the subtitle "A book on how to properly feed a child in order to raise him healthy and strong" and was approved by the Institute of Nutrition of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences.

The book actually consists of two parts. The first can be called an encyclopedia of nutrition, as it contains detailed articles on the nutrition of babies up to a year old, children from one to five years old, and a balanced diet. There is a selection of useful tips on food storage. Particular attention is paid to the hygiene of cooking, the benefits of vitamins, and the observance of the daily routine. Articles about new products for that time are interesting, for example, about acidophilic milk. Back in 1958, this dairy product had to be advertised, many simply did not know about its existence! And fish oil, which was strongly suggested to be given to children! nine0003

The second part of the book - recipes. Everything is like in a classic cookbook: the sequence of actions, the ingredients.

The book is richly illustrated. Each page has photographs or drawings.

Menu for a child from 1 to 5 years (for 2 weeks)

The first thing that comes to mind when you study this menu is that the children should have eaten a lot.

Breakfast

For example, any breakfast includes 4 items:

1. Main course: cereals, cottage cheese with sour cream, vegetables (mashed potatoes, cauliflower, beets, zucchini), eggs, pasta.

2. Sandwich. And this is not just bread and butter, in addition, meat (veal, ham), offal (liver pate), cheese, curd mass and even caviar are almost always offered!

3. Beverage. More often than others - coffee with milk, also cocoa, tea and just milk.

4. Apple. Every day for breakfast is a must. nine0003

What can I say, my daughter - she is almost 5 years old - does not suffer from a lack of appetite, but she will not completely overcome such a breakfast. Modern mothers know that children in kindergartens often eat breakfast poorly. Either they don’t get enough sleep, or they don’t have an appetite in the morning, or they don’t put enough caviar on sandwiches. 🙂

Second breakfast not available in 1958. Today in kindergartens, this is exactly the same apple that does not fit for breakfast.

Lunch

Nutritious lunch, varied dishes:

1. Obligatory first: here and cabbage soup, and fish soup, and meat broth with meatballs, and soup-puree, and borscht, and milk soup, and pea. Lots of vegetables are offered.

2. If the first dish is without meat and fish (for example, mashed potato soup with croutons), then the second dish is fish or meat (cutlets, beef stroganoff, zrazy, meatballs, meatloaf). And vice versa: soup with meat or fish is the second vegetable dish.

3. Mandatory fruits or berries. nine0003

4. Rye, wheat bread.

It is interesting that nothing liquid is offered for the "third". Compote appears only once in 14 days.

High tea

Snack - sour-milk realm. This is yogurt, kefir and milk. Many modern dairy products simply did not exist in those days. Mandatory sandwich (“bun”) with jam, marmalade or honey. A couple of times a biscuit or a pie is offered.

Dinner

Dinner does not in any case contain meat or fish dishes. nine0003

1. Main course: porridge, vegetables (salad or stew), scrambled eggs, pancakes, cheesecakes, dumplings.

2. Drink (tea, jelly, compote, 1 time milk). Sometimes jelly or mousse is offered instead of a drink.

3. Mandatory bread.

4. Cookies sometimes appear.

To summarize: a good option for a balanced baby food. This menu can be taken as a basis even today.

Did children really eat like this back in 1958? Did they get fruit or berries for lunch every day? How many of the millions of kids got caviar sandwiches? Of course, the menu proposed in the book is only recommendations that Soviet mothers of the middle of the 20th century should have listened to. Real life always makes adjustments. Do you agree? nine0003
