12-18 Months Baby Food Chart
12-18 Months Baby Food Chart -Now your tiny little bundle of joy is one year. I am sure you have thoroughly enjoyed this beautiful journey with your baby:) You have watched as your baby grows from first smiles to first steps. By now, your baby is ready to enjoy a variety of family foods.
What kind of foods should I give my 12-18 months old?You can give all the foods you cook for your family with fewer spices. Offer a variety of food each day. Your child may have few front teeth now, can chew some foods. But it is still a good idea to mash or cut into small pieces (½ inch or less) while giving the meat or any hard foods if it is tough to chew.
Now your child is one year, she can drink cow's milk. Cows milk is a readily available source of calcium, and it also provides essential vitamins and proteins for your child. Also, you can continue breastfeeding as long as you and your baby are comfortable.
How to introduce cow's milk to my baby?Prefer whole milk until three years as toddlers need fat in their diet for growth and development. Give only 200 - 300 ml (at the max) of cow's milk (in a cup) per day. Anything beyond the recommended amount of cow's milk leads to less appetite in toddlers. Also, don't dilute the milk with water as it reduces its nutrition content.
If your baby is not interested in taking plain milk, you can try to flavor the milk with natural homemade flavors, or add milk to porridge's/kheer/desserts or include dairy products such as curd/yogurt, paneer, cheese, etc.
Should my 12-18-month-old feed herself?By now, your toddler might be ready for self-feeding, though she might not be able to do it perfectly. She should be able to hold and drink from a cup with little help and may be interested in eating with a spoon/fingers. Foods can be cut into pieces so she can feed herself with her fingers. Encourage self-feeding if your toddler is ready, and eat as a family whenever possible. It helps in developing good eating habits.
What finger foods can I give to my toddler?Finger foods such as chunks of soft-cooked vegetables, fruits, cheese, toasted paneer, homemade cookies/crackers, and boiled eggs are easy to prepare and loved mainly by children of this age, and they can experiment on feeding themselves.
What changes can I expect in my one-year-old baby's appetite? After one year, your baby's growth rate naturally slows down, and hence, your baby's appetite might have decreased than before. Also, your toddler might be interested in exploring the world around than eating. The quantity of food consumed on each day may vary from large to small amount depends on the appetite of your child. Be assured that your child knows when she is hungry, and they won't stuff needlessly.
How to encourage my fussy eating toddler? Here are some tips for the fussy eating toddler
- Never force your baby to finish the meal. Let them take their own time and enjoy the food. If your baby refuses food, try again a little later on.
- Encourage self-feeding by offering plenty of finger foods.
- Let your baby experience the food even it is more of playing and a mess.
- Offer a variety of nutritious small meals.
- Reduce sugary foods and avoid processed/junk food as much as possible.
- Be an example for your child in food habits.
For a 12-18 months baby, you can offer three meals, two snacks, and cow's milk. If you are a breastfeeding mom, You can continue breastfeeding whenever your baby demands. Choose the timings for meals and snacks according to your child's preference. Try to give food at regular intervals. If your child refuses food, try again a little later on.
How much quantity for a 12-18-months baby per day?To ensure your child gets a balanced meal, aim for a variety of foods from four primary food groups, as listed below. For the quantity of food, always be guided by your child's hunger as appetite varies from baby to baby, and most babies change from day-to-day. Here is an approximate amount. Best foods for weight gain in babies & toddlers (0 months to 3 years)
1. Breast milk is one of the best foods for babies under 6 months to gain weight. Since mother’s milk is more nutritious than any other foods, it is good to exclusively breastfeed babies for the first 6 months.
If a baby is breast fed, mum needs to eat more nutritious foods to have enough milk supply and to increase the quality of milk.
To increase the milk supply in lactating mothers’ foods like milk, lentils (DAL), garlic, flax seeds (alasi in hindi or avise ginjalu in telugu), chickpeas (chana), almonds, whole grains, methi leaves, methi seeds, dill leaves (sabbasige soppu in kannada), fennel seeds (saunf), cumin (jeera) have been proved to be beneficial. One needs to include these in their diet moderately.
At least 2 protein rich meals and a breakfast should be included in the diet of a lactating mother. For vegetarians lentils / dal is a best protein rich food.
Chickpeas can be enjoyed by mums having babies older than 3 months. If using they need to be soaked overnight, soft cooked with turmeric and other Indian spices to prevent vata dosha.
Traditionally gond ke laddu, dry fruits ladoos and copra ladoos were eaten by lactating mothers to improve the quantity and quality of breast milk. Here are some protein rich ladoos which you can try after consulting your elders.
Gond ke laddu
Dry fruits ladoo
Copra ladoo (or dried coconut ladoo)
Here is a simple homemade powder for increasing milk supply in lactating mothers. Dry roast equal quantities of cumin and fennel seeds till they turn aromatic. Cool them and grind to powder.
Mix ½ tsp powder in ½ tsp warm ghee and consume 30 minutes before food 2 to 3 times a day. Desi ghee works best. This can be consumed for 2 weeks, followed by a break for 4 to 5 days and then repeat the cycle.
This also helps to reduce colic in breastfed babies. A small portion of ajwain/ carom seeds can also be included.
2. There is also a wide population of women who are unable to breast fed due to medical or professional reasons, yet their babies tend to grow well in terms of height and weight. For babies who are not breast fed, Formula milk has been proved to be of great help.
If your baby is over 6 months and you intend to stop breastfeeding, then choose a good formula milk with the help of your pediatrician. Formula milk is mostly balanced and has adequate nutrition which may not be available in dairy milk.
Formula milk helps to gain good weight in most babies, but one needs to be patient in trying out what works best for your baby. Many women express that formula milk is not good and hence should choose dairy milk.
Both have their own pros and cons. In the recent years, cows raised in farms are not grass-fed and are mostly on hormones either in their feed or injected to produce more milk. So it may be more unsafe than the formula milk.
A thorough research is conducted before any formula milk is sold in the market. So as a mother, you are the right person to choose between cow’s milk vs formula milk.
For babies above 12 months, fresh dairy milk can be used. Do not use milk that comes in tetra packs for babies and toddlers.
3. Foods like potato, pumpkin, sweet potato, dal, ghee, ragi, almonds, yogurt, eggs and milk help the baby to gain weight. Please take a pediatricians’ suggestion before you start any of these foods. As always follow a 3 day test rule.
How to make mashed potato for baby ?
Always choose hard potatoes that do not have any sprouts grown over them. Sprouted or soft potatoes are not healthy to use.
Wash and peel off the skin of the potato. Cook potato in excess water either in pressure cooker or a rice cooker steam basket or in a pot. It should be soft cooked.
While it is still hot, take it to a feeding bowl and mash it to soft. Add the potato stock that was left after cooking to make smooth puree. using a small steel glass you can easily mash it.
Add a pinch of ajwain and ghee and serve it warm. The same way you can also make mashed sweet potato for baby. Best time to serve these is for breakfast or lunch.
It can also be cooked along with rice to make a rice potato khichdi. You can find the recipe of sweet potato here (new post)
How much potato or sweet potato for baby?
7 months baby – 1 tbsp 2 to 3 times a week
8 to 10 months – 2 tbsp. 2 to 3 times a week
10 to 12 months – 3 to 4 tbsp. 2 to 3 times a week
toddlers- use your judgement . Can be served 5 times a week to daily.
Serve potato or sweet potato at least 2 to 3 times a week with little ajwain powder and ghee. Avoid when baby has tummy upset, colic or spit ups.
Moong dal and urad dal help a lot to gain weight in babies & toddlers. Urad dal is a power house of nutrients, high in calcium and protein and also EFA , essential fatty acids that help to develop the brain. So Idli is a very healthy food for babies.
Using urad dal make idli and serve with mild rasam or dal ka pani and ghee. This can be fed daily. You can find the recipe of soft idli here and a rasam recipe for babies here.
Include dal preferably moong dal or tuvar dal in lunch or breakfast every day. Do not mix dal with yogurt or milk. Just a simple vegetable dal rice khichdi works great for babies in gaining weight.
If your baby tends to get bored, change the vegetables used in the khichdi to give a different taste. You can find the recipe of dal khichdi here
Ragi porridge also helps to gain weight, it also strengthens the bones, teeth and helps for the overall development. Here is a complete post on how to introduce ragi to babies and how to make sprouted ragi flour for babies.
Yogurt and homemade paneer are also a good choice for babies over 8 months to gain weight. Serve yogurt alone or with brown rice and white rice in equal quantities.
I always used to make one cup curd separately for both my babies since it is not recommended to serve cold yogurt from the refrigerator. Also avoid serving in the evening or night.
how much yogurt/ curd to serve for babies ?
2 tbsp homemade unsweetened yogurt/ curd can be fed to 8 to 10 months baby, 2 to 3 times a week (avoid during winters)
4 tbsp can be fed to a 10 to 12 months baby. 3 to 4 times a week (avoid during winters)
Eggs also help babies to gain weight. Prefer boiled eggs instead of scrambled eggs. There is a loss of nutrition in scrambled eggs especially the protein content.
you can find the recipe of homemade curd here.
How to feed egg to baby ?
Make a hard boiled egg. Remove the yolk and take small portion of it and mash it with a pinch of cumin powder, add very little water and mash the egg to blend it well with water. It should become a smooth paste.
how much egg for 7 months old baby ?
For a 7 months baby – Start feeding a tsp of the above said mashed egg yolk. It can be served 2 times a week.
For 8 months baby – a tbsp and then increase the quantity.
For 10 months baby – by the end of 12 months a baby can eat the entire mashed yolk.
Include banana, papaya, apple, pear and chikoo (sapota). Serve banana at least 4 to 5 times a week. We give the small variety banana to babies. Avoid it when baby has cold and phlegm.
Serve a warm apple sauce or apple oats when the baby has cold and congestion. Banana helps to gain weight and most fruits helps to digest foods better since they contain natural digestive enzymes.
The nutrients from other foods are better absorbed by the body when a good amount of fruits are consumed (the right way).
Follow the rule, of feeding fruit alone without mixing with other foods at least once a day. Strictly do not serve fruits and milk together.
4. Ghee also helps to gain weight – How much ghee to serve for babies and toddlers ?
Start with only few drops a day when you introduce ghee to your baby. Try using organic and grassfed or desi ghee. Desi ghee can be found in ayurvedic stores or can also be bought online.
If you notice symptoms like coughing, itchy eyes or rubbing eyes or rashes stop it. Try with a new brand or try with homemade ghee. If your baby or toddler do not like the flavour of ghee, I suggest making ghee at home.
Just add few curry leaves towards the end when you make ghee at home, it adds a good aroma.
Excess usage of ghee may suppress the baby’s appetite, so use only as needed, a mother is the best judge. I followed the following measures for my babies and no cheese or butter was given to them.
If using butter then reduce the proportionate amount of ghee from the below mentioned quantity.
7 months ½ tsp ghee divided among 2 servings – start with only a few drops of melted ghee
8 months ¾ to 1 tsp ghee divided among 2 servings
10 months 1 to 1 ¼ tsp ghee divided among 3 servings
12 months on wards 1 to 1 ½ tsp ghee divided among 3 servings
Some babies may not digest fats in ghee well especially if formula milk, cheese, or butter are already a part of the diet. You can try with only half of the above quantity.
5. Can i use almonds / badam for my baby?
Experts advice not to introduce nuts to babies until 1 year as they may end up with severe allergies. So i would suggest waiting until your baby turns an year old especially if there is an history of allergy in your family.
However i have used almonds from 8 months for both my babies. Those who would like to try may start with almonds since these are the only kind of nuts that are slightly alkaline (apart from chestnuts).
Alkaline foods help us to keep our body healthy and energetic. Always try using soaked almonds. Soaking also increases the alkaline nature and hence digest well.
Soaking for about 5 to 6 hours also helps to peel the skin. They can be ground with little water and then used to cook baby foods like oats, ragi, rice etc.
6. Physical activity
Allow the baby to crawl freely, do not restrict your babies to prams or rocking chairs. Being physically active helps babies feel hungry in time. They are less fussy and eat or drink well.
Burping is very important as it helps to relieve the babies from colic and they tend to drink better. Gently Burp before feeding, in between the feeds, Burp after the feed. Keep the baby in upright position for at least 15 minutes after a feed.

Education in Singapore: features and prospects for foreigners
Singapore is an Asian country with a high standard of living and oriental cultural values. It is one of the most comfortable places to live due to its progressive social policy, ecology and wages. Singaporean education deserves attention, which is of high quality and relatively low cost of education. Therefore, educational institutions in Singapore are attractive to foreign students.
The history and principles of the Singaporean educational system
Until the middle of the 20th century, Singapore was a British colony. Independence was granted to the state only in 1959. Teaching in schools was conducted in the native language of citizens (English, Malay, Chinese, Hindi). Only Europeans spoke English, 95% of the population were Chinese, Indians and Malays. A new education system was needed to form a new society.
There are 3 stages in the history of formation of Singaporean education.
Between 1959 and 1979, educational programs were standardized. English was chosen for teaching school disciplines. As part of the education development program, 83 schools were built, funding was provided from the state budget. Textbooks began to be published in Singapore. Particular attention was paid to technical education - vocational schools and institutes were created.
From 1979 to 1997, emphasis was placed on improving the quality of education. Schools are introducing a streaming distribution of students (classes are formed depending on the abilities of children). At 1992 the Institute of Technical Education is being created, special technical streams are being introduced in secondary schools. Wages were increased for engineering and research professions, which increased the prestige of higher education.
Since 1997 there has been a stage of realization of the existing possibilities of the educational system. By 2008, streaming education in schools was abolished. Emphasis is placed on individual educational programs, the ability of citizens to learn throughout life, the development of creativity and teamwork skills. The Edusave grant system was introduced, which makes it possible to fully cover the costs of students for education. The leading directions were natural and technical disciplines.
The principles of the modern Singaporean educational system are:
- bilingual education programs (teaching is conducted in Chinese and English),
- education of tolerance in the younger generation,
- meritocracy (the merit of a person determines his position in society), (the state guarantees that no child will be deprived of the opportunity to study),
- individual approach.
Features of the educational system in Singapore
The educational system includes 3 stages - preschool, secondary and higher education. In government institutions, education is conducted in the official languages - English, Chinese, Malay and Tamil. In private educational institutions, children can study in their native language, which is different from the state language. The academic year at school begins on January 1 and is divided into 4 quarters of 10 weeks each, at universities - into two semesters.
Singapore educational system is similar to European
Early Childhood Education
Singapore Kindergartens are early childhood education institutions. They accept children from the age of 3, here they are taught communication skills, native and English languages, reading, counting, music and singing, drawing, modeling, dancing for 3 years. All preschools are private, some run by religious organizations or foundations. There are no state kindergartens.
Kindergartens attended by children from 3 to 5 years old
Secondary education
Secondary education institutions include schools, technical schools, colleges. Children start going to school at the age of 6. Secondary education is divided into primary, secondary and pre-university levels.
Primary school lasts 6 years, children learn math, English and mother tongue (Chinese, Malay, Tamil), civics, art, music. At the end of school, children take exams and receive a PSLE certificate, which is necessary to move on to the next level of education. All primary school curricula are standardized. If desired, students can attend sports sections, aesthetic education lessons and classes for gifted children. The primary school education system is divided into 2 levels - basic (grades 1-4) and orientation (grades 5-6). From grade 3, natural science disciplines are introduced into the curriculum. Primary school attendance is compulsory and free of charge for all citizens.
Children from 6 to 12 years of age study in the primary school
In the secondary school groups of students are formed according to the results of the examinations in the primary school. Education in secondary school is carried out in the following courses:
- special (4 years, emphasis on the study of the native language, an O-level exam is taken at the end),
- technical (4 years, the emphasis is on the study of technical disciplines, an exam is taken at the end N-level),
- express (4 years, superficial study of the native and English languages, involves obtaining an O-level),
- academic (training lasts up to 5 years, an N-level exam is taken at the end),
- integrated program - a professional course (5-6 years, 6-10 disciplines are studied, an A-level exam is taken at the end, which is required for admission to university).
Classes are formed on the basis of the results of elementary school exams
The pre-university level (Foundation) involves preparing for a university. Upon completion of express and special high school courses, students can enroll in junior (junior) colleges, the duration of which is 2 years. The final stage of studying in colleges is passing the exam for obtaining an A-level certificate. For students who want to get a technical education and have O- and N-level certificates, polytechnic schools (duration of study - 3 years) and institutes of technical education (1-2 years) are provided.
Progress is assessed on the following scale:
- A1 / A2 - excellent,
- B3 / B4 - good,
- C5 / C6 - pass,
- D7 / D8 - fail,
- E8 / F9 - unsatisfactory
According to this system, the highest grade A1 is equal to 1 point. When entering a junior college, the level of knowledge is assessed according to the L1R5 system, where L1 denotes a score in native or English language, and R5 is the sum of scores in 5 disciplines, which include at least one exact and 1 liberal arts subject. The lower the score, the higher the level of knowledge. The maximum score required to enter a junior college is 20. Polytechnics use the L1R2B2 system, where R2 are the two required subjects and B2 are the two subjects in which the student received the highest score. Polytechnics usually put forward additional requirements for applicants.
Higher education
The institutions of higher education are:
- Polytechnic institutes.
- Technical University (Nyang Technological University).
- Independent universities.
- National, public, private universities.
Training is conducted in Chinese or English. When entering universities, applicants take exams. Gifted and successful children, as an exception, can be accepted without entrance examinations. High school graduates provide an A-level certificate. Graduates of incomplete colleges and technical schools must provide information on academic performance and attendance of additional classes, sections. At the discretion of the admissions committee, the applicant may be assigned additional entrance tests.
Education in universities meets international standards
Education in Singapore universities is carried out according to international standards and includes 3 stages:
- Bachelor's degree (3-4 years), 5 years).
To obtain a degree and to move from one level of study to another, students must pass exams, the list of which is approved by each specific university. Diplomas from Singapore universities are recognized all over the world.
The cost of studying in Singapore for Russians and not only
The cost of studying in Singapore for foreign students is higher than for local students. It also depends on the prestige of the educational institution and specialty.
Kindergarten tuition varies from $100 to $2,000 a year, state school about $1,000 a year, and international school $1,000-$3,000 a month.
Tuition for undergraduate programs varies on average from $10,000 to $32,000 per year, and for master's programs - $15,000-42,000 per year. A 4-week English course will cost applicants about $2,000. The cost of pre-university education is $ 7,000–17,000 per year.
Education for international students may be free of charge. There is a fee subsidy system and grants for undergraduate and graduate programs. In addition, the student may be offered a job at one of the enterprises in Singapore by profession after graduation.

Basic requirements for foreigners to enter educational institutions
Each educational institution has its own list of entrance tests, often including SAT testing. A prerequisite for admission for foreign applicants is the presence of a certificate or diploma of education (secondary, higher), a certificate of international testing for knowledge of English - IELTS or TOEFL (minimum passing score - 6.0 or 550, respectively). In the absence of these certificates, you can study at one of the language schools in Singapore (training lasts 2-10 months), after which students are tested for admission to the university.
SAT is a standardized test for admission to universities. Developed and managed by the American non-governmental organization College Board. Includes tests in mathematics, text analysis and English grammar. Testing is carried out on a paid basis.
If the applicant has only a high school diploma, to enter a university, you need to study at a Singapore school for 2 years (requirement of state institutions), and then complete the Foundation program. For admission to the magistracy, a diploma of graduation from the university under the bachelor's program is required.
Scholarships and grants for international students
Every successful and gifted student can apply for a scholarship or education grant. Funding for training programs is provided by the state, educational institutions and employers.
At the state level, support is provided by the Ministry of Education, with funding provided for the various stages of education. The list of scholarship programs and grants is regularly updated on the website of the Ministry (https://www.moe.gov.sg/education/edusave). Only students enrolled in an educational institution can apply for a scholarship. Upon approval of the application, an additional agreement is signed, according to which the student is obliged to work in Singapore after graduation for several years. Grants provided by the Ministry of Education represent a sum of money that will only partially cover the cost of education.
Almost all universities in Singapore have their own scholarship programs. Information is available on the websites of specific universities. Often, funding is allocated for students in highly specialized areas.
Large enterprises and corporations are also interested in highly qualified personnel, so they are ready to pay for the training of a future employee. To do this, the student signs an agreement with the company, according to which he needs to work for several years under a contract in this organization after studying.
Student accommodation
Singapore students live in dormitories and rented rooms (apartments). Not all educational institutions can provide students with a hostel. Accommodation in Singaporean families is also possible (information provided by the university).
Some Singaporean universities provide students with a hostel
Infrastructure, quality and novelty of interior decoration and furniture, age of the house, proximity to the center affect the cost of housing. The price of renting a room or apartment on average varies from $200 to $1500 per month. The list of student expenses also includes:
- utility bills (~$80),
- meals (~$400),
- public transport fares (~$100),
- phone, internet (~$50),
- books, stationery ( ~$70),
- health insurance ($20–300).
To rent out a property, landlords must have an HDB service permit, which they must provide to a potential tenant prior to signing the contract. The contract must specify the terms of the lease, the rights and obligations of the parties.

Obtaining a student visa
Citizens of Russia and CIS countries need a student visa to study in Singapore for more than 4 weeks. The process of its registration takes about a month.
The visa section of the Singapore Embassy requires the submission of notarized documents translated into English:
- Passport.
- Photo 3cm×4cm.
- Certificate of education.
- Final exam results.
- Birth certificate.
- Passport copies of close relatives (father, mother, brothers, sisters).
- Bank statements confirming the possibility of living abroad and paying for tuition.
- Certificate from the parent's place of work indicating the position and average monthly earnings for the last six months.
- Letter of invitation from the university confirming the fact of enrollment.
- Proof of residence.
You also need to pay a visa fee of $25. With a positive decision, you must additionally apply for a 30-day Singapore tourist visa in order to undergo a medical examination at an educational institution during this time, receive a visa card and register at the Singapore Immigration Department.
Foreign students are required to study at the institutions indicated in the visa application. When changing the place of study, the visa is subject to cancellation and re-issuance. At the same time, the minimum number of training hours should be at least 15 hours per week, and attendance should be at least 90%. Student visa holders are not allowed to work in Singapore.
Courses during study and job prospects
During study, students can attend additional language courses. At the same time, they are not allowed to work during the entire period of study. In educational institutions in Singapore, attendance and academic performance are tightly controlled. If a foreign student misses a session and has an attendance rate below 90%, they are expelled and sent back to their home country.
The situation with the employment of foreign citizens is quite difficult. In 2012, local authorities began to monitor the number of working foreigners in Singapore. However, talented and gifted students have a chance to find a job after graduation. Graduates of educational institutions are allowed to stay in Singapore for some time after their graduation in order to receive a diploma and process related documents. If a graduate wants to stay in the country, he needs to find a job and get a work visa. The list of priority areas for employment is approved by the government. At the moment, such areas include manufacturing, construction, healthcare, finance, information technology, tourism, and trade. Even if a graduate has not found a job, but has a priority specialty, he can stay in Singapore. An employer who wishes to hire a foreigner must obtain permission from the authorities.
Reviews of studying in Singapore
Singapore is a great place to relax and study English. Everyone knows and speaks English, which allows you to freely join the atmosphere.
Singapore is the safest and most comfortable country for me personally. Huge malls that contain everything. Beautiful places, like parks and comfortable spacious streets with colorful houses, fascinate.

. .. the Singaporean school is a pure analogue of the old Soviet one. God teacher. Everyone has a school uniform, they walk in formation, in the morning they line up with the raising of the flag. If the boy's student has longer hair than the established one (they should not completely cover the ears), then he is sent straight from the lessons to the hairdresser to get a haircut. All this sounds scary, but in fact the rules are simple, and the child is taught from childhood to think - "follow the rules, and everything will be fine."

atmosphere in the classroom. At one point, I even caught myself thinking that I did not miss my hometown at all. Of course, there were problems, but they are so insignificant against the backdrop of joy and first-class impressions that even words cannot express. On campus, we lived as one big friendly family. In which case, everyone could help resolve absolutely any unpleasant situation, and this is surprising, because we knew each other very little. It was extremely unusual to find out where the guys were from, their geography is inexhaustible!
