Love, love, love the combination of flavors of this Avocado, Sweet Potato and Spinach baby puree’ appropriate for little ones starting from 6 months of age. This recipe is a great first food one, loaded with nutrients. Every ingredient is a superhero one, providing important elements for your baby’s growth.
Let’s start from the recipe and then I will give you a bit more nutritional information and details.
We will need to steam the sweet potatoes first. Easy. Peel the potatoes, chop them in 2 inches cubes and steam for 15 minutes. For the recipe you will need 1 cup of steamed sweet potato cubes that corresponds to a medium sweet potato.
After steaming the sweet potato, turn the heat off, open the lid of the steamer and add the spinach on top, close the lid again and let the spinach gently cook for 5 minutes. You do not want to overcook the spinach, just delicately steam for few minutes.
Transfer sweet potato and spinach in a tall container, add the avocado and hemp seeds.
Add also 4 tablespoons of warm water to thin the puree’.
Using an immersion blender transform the ingredients into a smooth cream.
Serve warm or at room temperature. You did it! Easy, isn’t it?
HOW TO STORE LEFTOVERSYou can store any leftover in the refrigerator for up to 3 days or in the freezer for up to 3 months. Do not worry if the puree turns brownish, it’s the avocado oxidation. A totally natural process that does not effect the nutritional value of the avocado, just the color.
CAN I THIN THE BABY PUREE WITH BREASTMILK OR BABY FORMULA?
Sure! I used 4 tablespoons of warm water to thin the baby puree but if you have extra breastmilk or baby formula available you can use that. It will be like adding some gold 🙂
WHY ADDING HEMP SEEDS?
I love adding hemps seeds in my recipes, they add extra nutrients. From a nutritional point of view they provide Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids (to support brain development). They offer a good amount of protein all together with fiber, Vitamin A, B6, zinc and copper. Nutritionally powerful I would say!
On top of the great nutritional value, hemp seeds help with constipation. Yep! If your little one needs some help with bowel movements, a teaspoon of hemp seeds sprinkled on his/her food every day helps!
WHY USING SWEET POTATO AND NOT REGULAR POTATO?Yes, they are both potatoes, but sweet potatoes and regular ones differ in many ways: they come from different plant families, they have different nutritional values and of course they taste different.
From a baby food point of view sweet potatoes have a creamy texture and a sweet natural taste that is great for little ones. Regular potatoes are creamy but with a bland flavor. From a nutritional point of view sweet potatoes outdo regular ones as they have higher Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin B6 and potassium levels. They are indeed a dense food, perfect for babies!
AVOCADO AND SPINACH: BABY FOOD HEROES!Two of the most nutritious and important foods in a baby/kid diet. Avocado can really be considered an almost perfect fruit: it has it all 🙂
It provides carbohydrates, healthy fats, Vitamin K, folate, Vitamin C and of course fiber. Avocados do not contain any cholesterol or sodium and are low in saturated fat.
Spinach on the other side have a very well known amount of iron, an essential element for your little one’s whole body functioning.

Popular first foods for kids!
Your baby's first solid food
If you think your baby is ready to start eating solid food, you are probably wondering what to use for his first meal. Is it better to start with fruits or vegetables? Should you feed your baby rice cereal?
Experts say it makes no sense to introduce a child to food in any particular order. Just be sure to introduce them one at a time, and wait at least three days before trying another new food to check for an allergic reaction.
Here are some favorite first courses recommended by experienced moms. For the earliest feedings, use a blender or food processor to process the food until smooth, thinning the puree slightly with breast milk, formula, or water as needed.
Alternatively, you can offer pieces of soft food on the high chair tray or on the table and let your child take the food and eat it.
You might be surprised at how little your baby needs for the first feedings - all it takes is a teaspoon!
Several options for first foods
Avocado
Avocado wins popularity contest as baby's first food. One mom says: “Avocados are an amazing super fruit for kids, full of healthy fats, vitamins and fiber. Buy a ripe fruit and mash!”
Preparing : choose a fruit that is ripe (somewhat firm but yielding to gentle pressure). Cut it in half, remove the stone and chop the pulp. Blend until smooth and dilute with breast milk, formula, or water as needed. Soon, when your child is ready to handle the thicker texture, you can simply mash the avocado with a fork.
Sweet Potato
Sweet Potato has achieved star status as a first course: very sweet, very soft, full of vitamins, antioxidants and other health benefits. If you want to start with vegetables, this might be a good choice.
Preparation : Sweet potatoes must be peeled, cooked and pureed. There are several options: you can cut them into pieces and steam or stew the pieces. Or you can bake the whole sweet potato, let it cool, and scrape the soft flesh from the skin. Either way, make sure the potatoes are soft when pierced with a fork.
Blend potatoes until smooth and dilute with breast milk, formula or water as needed.
Bananas
Many parents start with fruits because they are sweeter. Bananas are a popular choice because they are soft and easy to grind. Bananas can cause constipation in some children. Let your child try a little and see how he reacts. If you notice a problem, try pears and avocados first, then go back to bananas.
Preparation : Select a firm but ripe banana and peel it. Blend until smooth and dilute with breast milk, formula, or water as needed. Soon, when your child is ready to handle the thicker texture, you can simply mash the banana with a fork.
Pears
When ripe, pears are not only sweet and soft, but parents report that they are easy to digest. Pears can contain a lot of pesticides, so it's worth buying organic ones. You can use any variety, but the mildest and sweetest is best for children. Bartlett, Anjou and Komis are the favorites.
Preparation : very soft, ripe pears do not need to be cooked, but when you first start weaning, it is recommended to steam the pears until they are completely soft and remove the skin.
Blend until smooth and dilute with breast milk, formula or water as needed. Soon, when your child is ready to handle the thicker texture, you can simply mash the pear with a fork
Peas
Peas are the perfect first vegetable. It's simple and sweet, and it's free of nitrates. Try this before trying green beans, which can be high in nitrates, and broccoli, which has a bolder flavor. You can buy fresh peas in a pod in season or frozen.
Preparation : Peas need to be steamed, but take only a minute or two to cook. Process until smooth and dilute with breast milk, formula or water. Some parents find pea puree a bit grainy, but puree it in a blender or food processor an extra time and it should be smooth enough for your child to handle.
Oatmeal
Cereal is a classic choice for many parents, but oatmeal is a popular and much more nutritious choice than traditional rice cereal. Baby food companies make oatmeal that is ground to be very smooth Instead, you can use regular oatmeal with two options: either grind dry oatmeal in a spice grinder before cooking, or process cooked porridge until smooth by thinning breast milk, formula or water.
