2. Wash the blueberries

For this Beets & Blueberries Baby Food Recipe, you can either wash and use fresh blueberries or use frozen blueberries. Both options work great!

3. Steam everything together

Using a baby food maker or steaming basket, steam the beets and blueberries for about 10-15 minutes.

4. Blend into a puree

Place the steamed beets and blueberries in the baby food maker or blender to puree! Add in water from the steaming process or mix in breastmilk to achieve the desired puree consistency.

5. Store in the refrigerator or freezer

  • ▢ 2 medium beets
  • ▢ 1 cup fresh or frozen blueberries
  • Wash, peel, and cut the beets into small cubes.

  • Wash the blueberries.

  • In a baby food maker or steaming basket, steam the beets and blueberries for about 10-15 minutes (or until soft).

  • Blend the steamed beets and blueberries into a puree, adding water or breastmilk to create the desired consistency.

When To Introduce Beetroot For Babies?

The ideal and the recommended period to introduce beets to your baby is between eight and ten months, as they are higher in natural nitrates than other vegetables.

However, guidelines vary around the world when it comes to the introduction of beetroots. In the UK, beets are often included in babies’ diet from six months of age.

Add beets to your little one’s diet once she has had a taste of a few yellow and green vegetables. Serve not more than one to two teaspoons of beets to babies less than a year old, as nitrates cannot easily be digestible and can cause a condition called ‘baby-blue syndrome’ or methemoglobinemia. You can increase the intake after the baby turns one.

Avoid beets if your baby has diarrhea, as they have a mild laxative effect.

Consult your doctor before introducing them, if your baby suffers from gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).

Some pediatricians suggest not to feed fresh beet puree to babies and instead go for canned beet puree because of high nitrate levels in fresh ones. Beetroot allergy is rare. However, check with the doctor before you try it on your little one.

Note: Do not be alarmed if your baby’s poop is pink in color. It is normal after a meal containing beets.

Point to consider

Read product labels carefully when buying pre-cooked or frozen beet. Pick products that are low in sodium and have no added sugar. Rinsing beet before use may help remove added sodium.

How To Select Beets For Homemade Baby Food?

Beets are available all through the year, while the peak season is June through October. They do not fall under the ‘dirty dozen’ foods contaminated with pesticides. But if desired, you can purchase organic beets.

Pick fresh ones for homemade baby food. Select medium-sized beets over large beets as they are more tender and tasty. Opt for beets that are less than three to four-inch diameter, unblemished, unbroken, or unbruised. Go for beets with green, leafy tops (whenever possible). Wash the beets thoroughly before use.

How To Store Beets?

Store beets in a refrigerator after removing the leaf tops. Put them in a freezer bag or an airtight container and place in the veggie crisper or far back of the fridge. They remain fresh for a week, if stored well.

How To Cook Beets For Baby?

The best method to cook beets for babies is by steaming or boiling. Baking is also an easy way to cook beets. Steamed beets are easier to make into puree and have Vitamin A beta carotene readily available to be absorbed by the baby’s body. Cooking can significantly reduce the nitrates in raw beets.

Rinse the beets thoroughly, remove greens, peel the skin (or peel the skin after cooking) and dice it into small pieces. Then start cooking:

  1. Boil water in a medium saucepan.
  2. Add beet slices and cook them until tender (for nearly 15 minutes).
  3. Drain the beets. To stop the cooking process, rinse them under cold water.
  4. Puree the cooked beets in a blender until smooth. Add water if required.

If you prefer to bake the beets, just wrap the slices in foil and cook for an hour at 360ºF or 180ºC.

Serve beet purees mixed with raisins, applesauce, sweet potatoes, chicken, brown rice, etc. Typically around ten months, your baby will be ready for finger foods, and then you may serve small cooked pieces of beets.

You may refrigerate beet puree leftovers for three days in BPA-free containers. However, it is advisable to give freshly prepared food to babies.

Discard the cooking water from boiling beetroot as nitrates may have got into the water during the cooking process.

Quick Beetroot Recipes For Babies

Some of the quick beetroot recipes are discussed below. Have fun while you try them out for your baby.

1. Purple Potatoes

You will need:

  • 2 medium sized beets
  • 1 medium sized carrot
  • 2 potatoes
  • water

How to:

  1. Wash and peel the carrot, beets, and potatoes. Cut them into slices.
  2. Steam or boil them in water until tender. Once cooked, make a smooth puree out of it in a food processor. Add salt for taste.

2. Roasted Beet Shapes

You will need:

  • 5 beets (medium sized)
  • 1 tbsp olive oil

How to:

  1. Clean the beets, peel, and slice them.
  2. Brush olive oil on the beet slices and put them on a baking sheet.
  3. Bake them at 350ºC for around ten to 20 minutes.
  4. Sprinkle a pinch of salt before serving.

Quick tip

To prepare this recipe, cut beet into two-inch thick slices that the baby can grasp and hold easily to practice self-feeding. Serve it with delectable dips such as hummus to make the overall meal nutritious.

3. Beetroot Rice Casserole

You will need:

  • 2 cups beets slices (cooked)
  • 3 cups brown rice (cooked)
  • 1 small onion (optional)
  • 1 cup shredded chicken (cooked)
  • 1/2 cup chicken broth
  • 1/4 cup whole milk or yogurt
  • 3 egg yolk
  • Spices if needed

How to:

  1. Mix rice, beets, onion, chicken in a bowl. Add milk and egg yolks.
  2. Apply olive oil or cooking spray in a two-quart casserole dish and evenly spread the mixture in a dish.
  3. Bake for one hour at 350º.

4. Mashed Turnip & Beets

  • 1 large turnip (diced)
  • 4 beets
  • spices (for taste/ optional)

How to:

  1. Put the beet in a pan containing boiling water and cover.
  2. Steam the beets until tender and place the both in a bowl and mash. Add spices if desired.

  1. Steam all three ingredients until tender (add apple at the end).

How to:

  1. Cook carrot and beetroot in water. Add salt for taste.
  2. Blend them together to make a puree.

10. Beetroot Carrot Soup

  • 1 cup water

How to:

  1. Add carrot, beetroot, and water into a pressure cooker. Mix well and cook for two whistles.
  2. Allow it to cool and blend until smooth. Strain the mixture with the help of a strainer.
  3. Transfer the mixture to a pan and boil. Keep stirring intermittently. Cool and serve.

11. Apple Beetroot porridge

You will need:

  • 1 beetroot (peeled, grated)
  • 1 apple (grated)
  • little fresh ginger (grated)
  • ¼ cup oats
  • ½ cup milk

How to:

  1. Mix all the ingredients in a pan and cook for five minutes.
  2. Keep stirring until the veggies turn soft. Add more milk to the beetroot porridge if needed.

12. Beetroot Halwa with Dates

You will need:

  • 1 beetroot (peeled, chopped)
  • 10 dates
  • 2 tsp ghee
  • water

How to:

  1. Cook the beetroots in a steamer or pressure cooker with water.
  2. Take away the seeds from dates and cook in water until they turn soft. This may take about five minutes.
  3. Blend the cooked beets and dates together.
  4. Pour ghee in a pan, heat it and add the mixture to this.
  5. Saute till the raw smell vanishes and cover the pan for around 10 minutes.
  6. Stir occasionally. Put off the flame when it turns thick.

Note: Offer not more than three spoons for babies. Add formula or breast milk to get the desired consistency.

13. Beetroot Risotto

You will need:

  • 1/2 onion (chopped)
  • 1/2 garlic clove (finely chopped)
  • 125g risotto rice (cooked)
  • 2tbsp olive oil
  • 250g fresh beetroot (cooked)
  • 425ml vegetable stock
  • 1tbsp grated parmesan cheese
  • 2tbsp cream cheese

How to:

  1. Preheat the oven at 180ºC.
  2. Heat the olive oil in a pan, add garlic and onion and cook for five minutes.
  3. Add rice to the pan and stir well. Pour half the stock and let it cook for five minutes.
  4. Pour remaining stock, stir, and place in the oven. Cook for 15 minutes.
  5. Make the beetroot puree. Stir in cream, parmesan, and beet puree to the risotto.
  6. Whizz once again to make a puree.

14. Pomegranate and Beetroot juice

  • 1 beetroot (peeled, cut, steamed)
  • 1 bowl pomegranate seeds

How to:

  1. Blend steamed beetroots and pomegranate seeds in a blender.
  2. Strain through a fine sieve before serving. .

Beets are one of the most widely used vegetables on the kindergarten menu. And borscht, and vinaigrettes, and caviar, and a side dish - you can’t do without it. It begins to be introduced into the nutrition of young children quite early, but since the vegetable can cause allergies, you need to start very carefully, while carefully monitoring the reaction.

The total cooking time will be kept to a minimum if you buy beets already cooked or if they are pre-cooked.

    First, salad number 1 - with beetroot and apple. Elementary simple, light and, due to the rather large number of apples, fresh and juicy.

    Beets are thoroughly washed and boiled until tender. Cooking time always depends on the size of the beets. I had with a small fist, cooked in a pressure cooker for about 30 minutes. If the knife easily and freely enters the beets, then it is ready. Drain the water, cool the beetroot and peel it.

    Wash the apple, peel and remove the seed.

    Cut both the beetroot and the apple into small strips.

  • Step 4

    Salad dressed with refined vegetable oil (odorless), salt and citric acid. Since I don’t buy or use citric acid, I changed it to a teaspoon of freshly squeezed lemon juice.

    Stir and serve on its own or as a side dish.

    The next salad, at number 2, with the beautiful name "Dawn".

    Thoroughly wash the beets, boil until tender, cool and peel.

    We take a small egg, weighing about 50 grams. It must be washed and boiled until tender - 10 minutes after boiling water. Next, drain the boiling water and pour cold water, hold the egg there for a couple of minutes, and then select, peel and chop.

    Peel the onion, blanch in boiling water and chop finely.

    Scald canned peas with boiling water.

    Cut the beets into small cubes.

    Add all ingredients to a bowl and season with lemon juice, salt and vegetable oil. Quite a dish on its own.

    For myself, I added chopped sauerkraut to this salad and it tasted almost like a vinaigrette. By the way, already in the nursery, not only sauerkraut, but also sauerkraut are introduced into the children's menu. At least, in the technological map of the kindergarten, I found a vinaigrette with the addition of both cucumbers and sauerkraut.

    Well, the third option is beetroot caviar.

    For it, as in the two previous options, rinse and boil the beets until tender. Then let it cool down and clean it.

    Peel and cut the onion into small cubes.

    Place a frying pan on the fire, heat it up, pour in the vegetable oil and add the onion. Saute, stirring, for about 5 minutes. Make a small fire, because we do not need frying, but a tender, transparent, juicy onion.

    After about 5 minutes, add a heaping teaspoon of tomato paste to the onion, stir and fry for another couple of minutes.

  • Step 12

    Cut the beets into small cubes or grate them, as I did. Add to the pan to the onion, mix everything, close the lid tightly, make a minimum fire and simmer for 12-15 minutes. A couple of minutes before readiness, add salt, sugar, lemon juice and mix everything well.

    We spread the caviar from the pan and let it cool. It can be served as a side dish, or on toast, like a sandwich. Personally, I add myself a clove of garlic, ground pepper, coriander and brown bread passed through the press ... Well, I really like it.

    I noticed that if the onion is not subjected to heat treatment, but goes into the salad raw, then it must be scalded with boiling water before being cut.

    As a child, my youngest child did not like raw onions at all, or their crunch, so I replaced it with a finely chopped apple ... if, of course, it was appropriate. For me, the combination of apple and beets is very harmonious.

    Well, that's all I wanted to tell you about. Choose, try, I hope your kids will like at least one of the options. After all, vegetables in the children's menu is an important component.

Beetroot salads can be combined with any side dish (cereals, vegetable purees) and with meat dishes. We have selected a very simple beetroot salad recipe for children. But they can also be cooked in diet food.
