Teaching a child to use scissors correctly

In a previous article on the development of fine motor skills in a child, it was said that one of the exercises that contribute to this is cutting with scissors. Working with scissors helps to prepare the child's hand for the upcoming schooling, as it perfectly develops the small muscles of the hands and coordination. At what age can you give your child scissors and how to teach them how to use them correctly?

The use of scissors requires special skills and abilities from the child. For a child, the task of cutting something is very difficult, because he has to use all the fingers of the hand out of sync: thumb, index and middle fingers - each does its job.

The smaller the child's hand, the more difficult it is to use scissors. However, many children from the age of 3 are ready to learn how to make cuts on paper. And only by the age of 6, the skill of using scissors will not require any tension from the child - everything will happen “on the machine”.

Before you teach your child how to use scissors, make sure their arms are strong enough for the activity. Before you give your child scissors, play fun games with them that will help improve their hand-eye coordination. To develop the ability to use both hands (coordinate the movements of both hands), give the task to tear a piece of paper into very small pieces. These pieces can be glued to the paper (if you tear the white paper and stick the pieces on the blue one - this is a snowball, if you tear the brown paper and then stick it on the silhouette of a bird - these are feathers for a freezing sparrow). Play finger games with your child, let him sculpt from plasticine more often - this strengthens the fingers and develops fine motor skills.

Step 1: Buy quality children's scissors.

Scissors of almost any size are available in stores, so try to choose one that fits your child's hand well. Good children's scissors, on the one hand, should be sharp enough (so that it is easy for a child to cut), since blunt scissors tear paper, and do not cut it. On the other hand, children's scissors must necessarily have rounded tips so that the child does not prick and injure another. Some children's scissors have plastic coated blades for safety.

If the child is left-handed, you should purchase scissors designed specifically for left-handed children (when using ordinary scissors and holding them in the left hand, children do not see the cut line). The blades in them are turned upside down and do not cover the cut line.

Step 2 Discuss with your child how to use scissors.

First, tell your child that scissors can only be used to cut paper (do not cut clothes, tablecloth, fingers, hair, etc. ). Secondly, talk about the fact that you can’t walk, run and jump with scissors. Explain to the child that scissors should not be played with, brought close to the face and thrown. Show how to pass the scissors correctly (handles forward) and only closed (with closed blades).

Step 3. Teach your child how to hold the scissors.

Organize your child's workplace, sit next to him and demonstrate how to hold the scissors correctly. Next, show your child how you yourself cut a sheet of paper in half, cut the paper into strips, cut out circles and triangles, cut the “fringe”.

It is very important to teach your child to hold the scissors correctly. It is most convenient to take scissors with your thumb and middle fingers.

1. Have the child hold their hand with the thumb up. Place one of the rings of scissors on your thumb.

2. Have your child insert the tip of their middle finger into the other ring.

3. Place your child's index finger on the second ring (outside).

4. The ring finger and little finger should be bent and rest against the palm.

5. You need to work with scissors while sitting at the table. The child's feet should rest on the floor. Elbows - lie on the table. The knees should be bent at a right angle. In the process of cutting, the arms should be slightly pressed to the body.

Do the first movements of opening and closing scissors without paper, practice in the air. Play a game with him: a bird flew into its nest - opens its beak wide, wide, chicks look out of the nest, call their mother - open their beaks finely and finely. After the child understands the principle of action, go to paper.

If it is still difficult to work with scissors with two fingers, you can also put your ring finger into the ring.

Be patient and support the child, even when he fails to make an incision. Over time, the child will master the skills better and better (he needs practice).

Carving can be a very fun activity if parents get creative with it. In order for the child to engage in hunting, make classes fun. Come up with different tasks and beat them. You can cut out from fabric, cardboard, foil and from a variety of materials that your imagination tells you. Don't throw away your baby's cuts. Together with your child, “beat” them in applications, postcards, collages, crafts. And most importantly, praise your child even for small successes.
