Baby food ground turkey
How to Serve Turkey to Babies and Toddlers
Ground Turkey Stir-Fry can be adapted to feed the whole family. In December 2020, the 2020-2025 Dietary Guidelines for Americans (DGA) was published, citing specific nutrition recommendations for babies and toddlers through 24 months, including the importance of incorporating lean protein into the diet. Previously, guidance for children under two years had not been included in these federal recommendations in a substantial way. However, the report indicates that this period of development is critical to establish nutritious eating habits that can last a lifetime.
The guidelines specifically highlight two nutrients that should be included for babies over 6 months old: iron and zinc.
At about 6 months old, introduce infants to nutrient-dense complementary foods…Encourage infants and toddlers to consume a variety of foods from all food groups. Include foods rich in iron and zinc, particularly for infants fed human milk.
Excerpt from the 2020-2025 Dietary Guidelines for Americans
And guess what lean protein has both? Turkey!
According to food blogger and nutrition specialist Emily Dingmann of My Everyday Table, the best way to do this is by preparing “one family meal” that can be easily adapted to satisfy the whole family. Dingmann prepares Turkey Stir-Fry for the whole family and answers some frequently asked questions about the best ways to adapt turkey for babies and toddlers below.
What does the DGA say about feeding babies and toddlers?
Portion of ground turkey suitable for babies.According to the DGA, the period between six months and two years of age is an important time to encourage babies and toddlers to try a variety of nutrient-dense foods: veggies, fruits, grains and lean proteins like turkey.
The idea of babies eating what everyone else is eating is not new. It is part of the baby-led-weaning approach, but it is a shift from the standard baby purees and puffs.
It is also recommended to avoid added sugars and foods higher in sodium.
Note: According to the DGA, it may take up to 8-10 exposures for an infant to accept new textures and flavors for the first time.
Can babies have turkey?
Yes. Once babies are six months old and eating solids, they can eat turkey. However, it is important to make sure portions are appropriate for their eating stage and not a choking risk.
How do you introduce turkey to a baby?
Turkey Stir-Fry Plated for Toddlers. There are a few ways to do this. If going with a pureed approach, simply cook the turkey and puree it with some rice and veggies. When babies develop more hand control, they can start eating finger foods. Offer pea-sized pieces of soft foods like ground turkey and cooked veggies.
Try this Turkey Stir-Fry recipe for step-by-step instructions on adapting the dish for babies and toddlers.
Note: Toddlers and young children don’t always do well with food touching, so you may want to serve the meal components separate.
Should I choose one feeding method for babies?
Before you get caught up in a feeding method, don’t feel like you have to decide on one OR the other. It is reasonable to do a blend of purees and baby-led-weaning. There are a lot of strong opinions on these methods, but ultimately, decide what works best for you and your family. A mix of both is totally fine.
What matters is that you are feeding and exposing babies and toddlers to a variety of nutrient-dense foods and flavors.
When can I begin serving “one family meal?”
The DGA recommends babies and toddlers are exposed to a variety of nutrient-dense foods, similarly to what the entire family should be eating.
Regardless of the age of your children, my answer is always…NOW! The only exception is that your baby needs to be ready for solid food. So, bring them to the table and serve them what everyone is eating – one family meal!

Turkey Patties For Babies / Toddlers /Kids
Easily make these mini turkey burger patties without egg and breadcrumbs (the avocado makes them nice and soft & provide nutrients) – they’re best served with vegetable purees.
The ground turkey patties can be made ahead of time, they’re freezer friendly, and perfect when doing GAPS diet for babies and older kids. Suitable for school lunch box as well.
Constantly coming up with healthy meal ideas for babies and toddlers is a full time job in itself. That is why I like to have some easy baby meals stashed in the freezer. The best part: it’s convenient to have baby food that can be mixed and matched with vegetables, grains or pasta to create meals throughout the week.
Ingredients For Turkey Avocado Patties
- Ground turkey – for a softer patty use thigh meat, and preferably organic.
- Avocado – ripe soft avocado, diced. Mash with a fork if you’re worried about chocking.
- Lemon juice – the sourness will provide a zesty kick and preserve the avocado’s green color.
- Onion – diced, for flavor (onion powder also works).
- Garlic – minced, for flavor.
- Coriander – it will bring some citrusy, nutty and woody taste. It improves the taste a lot if you’re not using any salt for small babies.
- Salt + black pepper – for babies older than 12 months.
- Egg – acts as a binding agent. See recipe card below for egg free version.
- Fat for frying – use oil, ghee, or animal fat (I used ghee).

How To Make Turkey Patties For Baby
- Prepare the ingredients: chop the onion, dice the avocado and mince the garlic.
- Combine: mix the ground turkey meat, the raw egg, avocado, onion, garlic, lemon juice and seasonings.
- Form small patties: take about 1/2 tablespoons of mixture and form a ball, flatten in your palm or with a spatula. Be sure they are uniformly flat so they cook inside well at the same rate.
- Fry: In a preheated skillet (make sure the pan and oil is hot enough, the fritters should sizzle when dropped in. Not too hot though, you need them to cook inside too.) place the patties and cook until the underside is nicely golden brown, about 2-3 minutes. Flip and cook on the other side. Continue cooking, adding more oil if needed.
Recipe Variations:
- Egg free – add about 2 tablespoons of flour instead. Or you can omit them entirely. The turkey patties will have a tougher texture but it’s totally doable.
- Add flavor:add cheese, herbs, and other vegetables.
- No ground turkey – use ground chicken instead.

Oven Baked Turkey Patties
If you decide to bake them in the oven instead of frying, then preheat the oven at 400 F. Bake the turkey patties on a baking sheet covered with parchment paper (uncovered) for about 18-20 minutes, or until middle is cooked through.
Tips For Making Ahead
Gather the ingredients and form the patties, place them on parchment paper covered cookie sheet. Freeze them raw. Once frozen transfer them in a plastic bag and keep frozen for up to 3-4 months. When you need a quick finger food or meal for your baby, you’ll have fresh tasting turkey patties in no time!
How To Store
- Store leftovers for 3-5 days in the refrigerator (closed container).
- Freeze up to 3-4 months in an airtight container (see instructions above).
- Thaw / reheat cooked patties – just pop them out of the freezer and place them on a parchment paper covered sheet. Cover with foil and reheat at 170C /350F until heated through (about 15-20 minutes.) If raw (let them thaw overnight in the refrigerator first)- then cook them on the skillet or in the oven as if they are freshly made.
