Review of bottle warmers Kitfort KT-2301 and KT-2302

We continue the series of reviews of devices belonging to the group of children's products. In particular, designed to facilitate procedures related to baby food - heating and sterilization of various baby feeding devices - bottles, nipples and pacifiers. These devices have a very simple design and narrowly focused specialization.

Today we will introduce readers to devices designed for defrosting and heating baby food. Milk, infant formula, puree, etc., can be in plastic bottles, glass and metal jars, as well as in a complete glass. Due to the external coolant, heated to a certain temperature, the heaters provide gentle and uniform heating. According to the manufacturer, milk and mixtures in the device do not overheat, which is important for preserving the nutrients and vitamins of breast milk.

Based on the foregoing, the testing tasks were determined: checking the conformity of the declared temperatures with the real ones, determining the heating rate and evaluating the ease of use in general. Well, let's go!

What's in the box

The bottle warmer comes in a compact, almost cubic box. Traditionally for Kitfort, the packaging contains a slogan and logo, a schematic image of the device, its name, description of features and a short list of technical characteristics. The box is not equipped with a carrying handle, however, the size of the box is so small that there is simply no need for a handle.

Inside the box was the device itself, packed in a plastic bag, and a few documents in another bag - instruction manual, warranty card and promotional materials.

At first glance

The first impression is related to the size of the device - the heater impresses with its compactness. Which is not surprising, since it is designed to heat one bottle of baby food. Structurally, it is a container with a heating element at the bottom. At the bottom of the front side of the case there is a temperature regulator and a heating indicator.

Plastic insert at the bottom hides the heating element. On the wall of the bowl there is a mark of 110 ml of water. Looking ahead, let's say that this is how much water is recommended to be poured into a bowl for heating bottles, jars, or when using a complete glass.

On the bottom side there is a cord storage compartment. In preparation for switching on, the cord is inserted into a specially allocated groove in the base and exits from the back of the case.

The top of the bowl can be covered with a lid. This is necessary when using the cup for warming baby food or sterilizing.

Cup made of translucent pastel blue plastic. The volume is 170 ml. There are no markings on the walls.

As you can see, the design is very simple, if not primitive. However, the manufacturing quality of the device can be considered high. Pleasant color, streamlined shape, high-quality smooth plastic that does not emit any odor, compact size - what else is required for a device that will not be used for very long.

Manual

A5 size document printed on high quality thick paper. On ten pages, the user has the opportunity to get acquainted with the purpose of the device, with a description of the design, operating rules, technical characteristics and precautions.

All information and recommendations are presented in simple language, not overloaded with technical terms. The operation information is divided into three parts depending on the operation: warming baby bottles, warming a jar or glass of baby food, sterilizing nipples and pacifiers. Tips will help you navigate the time of work, avoid difficulties and optimize processes. A single study of the instructions, in our opinion, is enough for the successful use of the heater.

Control

One switch located on the front side of the housing controls the operation of the device. The switch has four positions: Off, 40 °C, 70 °C and 100 °C. The stroke of the regulator is free; during rotation, you need to set the pointer opposite the desired position. Each of the steps is accompanied by a picture in which the purpose of the mode is easily guessed: heating the bottle with the mixture and heating the baby food.

The indicator lights up orange when the heating element is operating. If you are near the device, then the indicator is very poorly visible: it does not shine brightly, it is located under the regulator in the tapering part of the base. From a distance of a couple of steps, you can easily distinguish whether the indicator light is on or not.

Operation

Before first use, the instructions recommend pouring water into the heater bowl, turning it on to sterilize, cover with a glass lid and wait for the water to boil. Then you need to turn off the device, drain the water and repeat the operation 4-5 more times. During the first sterilization, cloudiness of the water is possible - this is not a defect. However, in our case, neither turbidity nor odor was noticed. We also did not repeat the operation 4-5 times, limiting ourselves to a single sterilization cycle before the first use.

The procedure for warming baby food is the same. To heat a bottle of infant formula, a jar of puree or baby food placed in a complete cup, you need to pour about 110 ml of water into the bowl of the device. Then place the bottle, jar or cup in the same place, set the thermostat to 40 °C and wait. The instruction says that when the water in the heater reaches the set temperature, the indicator will turn off and the bottle can be removed. In fact, the indicator goes out very quickly. Then after a while it turns on, then goes out again. As a result, we recommend focusing not on the indicator, but on the recommendations of the instructions: for heating 90 ml of milk takes approximately 10 minutes.

For more even heating, the water level in the bowl should be slightly higher or equal to the level of baby food in the bottle, jar or glass. The maximum allowable water level in this case is at least 1 cm to the edge of the bowl.

Shake the milk or formula and check the temperature before feeding the baby. Mix the baby food and also check the degree of heating. If the temperature is insufficient, then return the container back to the heater.

Do not keep baby food warm for a long time, as the product may spoil. For formula or porridge, it is recommended to keep a bottle of water in the warmer on the keep warm setting and add the formula just before feeding.

The sterilization process is just as simple. Pour all the same 110 ml of water, throw in nipples or pacifiers, cover the device with a lid and set the sterilization mode by moving the thermostat to the 100 °C position. After the water boils, sterilize the accessories for no more than two minutes.

At the end of the work, turn the regulator to the Off position, disconnect the appliance from the mains and drain the water from the bowl. Allow the appliance to cool down for a few minutes before the next cycle of operation.

Maintenance

Maintenance is extremely easy. At the end of the work, you need to disconnect it from the network and drain the water. You can then wipe the outside and inside with a damp cloth. The glass and lid can be washed with soap and water. The body of the heater must not be submerged under water or washed under running water.

If the heater is used regularly, it must be descaled once a month. To do this, pour 50 ml of vinegar and 100 ml of cold water into the bowl, turn on the heater and set the mode to 40 °C. Wait 10 minutes and turn off the device. The mixture should be in the bowl until the lime scale is completely dissolved, after which it must be drained and the bowl thoroughly rinsed.

Testing

Our measurements

The power of the Kitfort KT-2301 heater during heater operation ranges from 118 to 124 watts, which is slightly higher than the manufacturer's declared power of 100 watts.

100 ml of cold tap water boiled in 6 minutes 20 seconds. The device does not emit any noise during operation.

Practical tests

During the practical experiments, we were mainly busy measuring the temperature of the water in the bowl, the temperature of the product to be heated and the process time.

Warming milk in a bottle

100 ml of regular cow's milk at 8.1°C was poured into a baby bottle. We poured 110 ml of water into the heater bowl, placed the bottle there and turned on the heating mode to 40 °C.

The heater worked continuously for 30 seconds, then the indicator went out. We did not have the slightest doubt that neither the water nor, moreover, the milk in the bottle had reached the required temperature. So we continued to wait.

After 5 minutes of heating, the temperature of the milk in the bottle has reached 26°C. After 10 minutes - 30.6 °C. For 15 minutes of operation of the device, the water in it heated up to 37. 5 °C, milk - up to 34.1 °C. In 15 minutes, the heater worked for a total of 1 minute 48 seconds. Energy consumption was 0.005 kWh.

Result: good

Not very fast, but careful and safe. The results of our experiments confirmed the recommendations of the instructions for heating 90 ml of milk for 10 minutes.

Heating baby puree in a glass jar

Baby puree in a glass jar was stored in a kitchen cabinet, i.e. before the start of the experiment it had room temperature. Weight — 80 g. 100 ml of water was poured into the heater and the thermostat was switched to the heating mode up to 70 °C.

Next, the temperature of the water in the heater and the puree in the jar was measured at certain intervals:

Obviously, the device will continue to operate in the maintenance mode, and the temperature of the puree in the jar will tend to equalize with the temperature of the water in the heater. For 10 minutes, the heater worked for 5 minutes 11 seconds, the device consumed 0.011 kWh.

When warming up the food in the complete cup, the preparation is simple: pour 100 ml of water into the device, put the baby food into the cup, place the cup into the warmer. To ensure even heating, the contents must be stirred periodically. 100 g vegetable puree at room temperature reached 34.8°C in five minutes at 70°C. The heater worked directly for 4 min 9 sec, the power consumption was 0.008 kWh.

Result: good

Particularly suitable for heating small amounts of baby food. At the same time, you can heat even in a jar, even in a complete glass. The main thing is that the temperature of the finished puree will never exceed the regime temperature, which means that the risk of overheating is excluded.

Sterilization

To sterilize two teats, it was necessary to pour 220 ml of water into the device. It was this volume of water that completely covered the accessories.

The sterilization mode has been set. The heating element worked continuously. The water boiled only after 16 minutes and 30 seconds. The water boiled, but did not splash over the edges of the appliance. The nipples were boiled for about two minutes. In total, for 19 minutes of operation, the heater consumed 0.035 kWh.

In our opinion, the sterilization function in the Kitfort KT-2301 heater is more decorative than practical, since the cycle is long in time, and the volume of the bowl is suitable for only one, maximum two, nipples.

Result: Satisfactory.

Conclusions

Kitfort KT-2301 is valuable, first of all, for its size. The warmer is capable of heating milk or infant formula in a bottle no larger than 15 cm in height. The complete cup is intended for heating no more than 170 ml of baby food. Nice appearance, safety and ease of management are also among the advantages of the product. The keep warm mode will help keep the mixture heated to a certain temperature for some time.

However, the appliance heats up even the smallest amount of baby food for a relatively long time. Therefore, you will need to get used to it and start preparing for feeding at least 15 minutes in advance. But the slow process provides gentle heating with a gradual increase in temperature. The use of the device as a sterilizer, in our opinion, is an additional, and not the main, function. Due to the compactness, only one or two teats or pacifiers can be sterilized. The process continues for about 20 minutes.

The carton containing the heater is slightly larger than the previous model. The information placed on the packaging is still the same: the image of the device, a list of its features and technical characteristics. A careful study of the information will help to form a first impression of the device. In general, all devices from the so-called Kitfort children's range are designed in exactly the same way: one color and one style, and instead of stylized splashes of water above the logo - a smiling whale - a cloud a la children's drawings: a little man, a house, a mushroom, a leaf and other things. Sweet and unobtrusive.

Opening the box, inside we found: the device itself and several documents. The instruction manual, warranty card and advertising leaflets were placed in one plastic bag. The device with all neatly packed parts and accessories is protected from scratches and external damage by a plastic bag. Disassembled heater consists of:

• housing with heating element and bowl,
• baskets,
• bottle holder,
• covers.

At first glance

The device is still made in the same milky white color. The bottom and the area around the thermostat are a soft pastel blue. Accessories are made of dark plastic. The thermostat is located on the front side of the case. The device is small-sized, so it does not take up much space on the kitchen table. The body expands towards the base. On the table, the heater is stable and secure, does not slip.

The inside of the housing is a container, under which the heater is located. However, we cannot see the heating element, because it is protected by the plastic bottom of the bowl. At the bottom there are holes through which water enters the heater.

A wire basket with holes on the bottom and on the sides is installed in the bowl. Thanks to this shape, water can circulate freely throughout the volume of the bowl. There are small handles on the sides of the basket to help you remove the accessory. On the walls of the basket there are stops on which the bottle holder is placed.

The bottle holder is an oval grill. Designed for sterilization of bottles, accessories and other suitable containers for baby food. Two round holes in the center are needed for quick and comfortable removal of the holder from the basket - you insert your fingers and take out or install the part.

A cover made of transparent plastic is placed on top. It is equipped with a convenient handle that allows you to open and close the bowl without touching the surface of the lid. This reduces the risk of burns when using the device as a sterilizer.

The power cord exits from the bottom of the base at the rear. The unit does not have a cord storage compartment. The length of the cord seems to us sufficient for use under normal conditions.

On the bottom side you can see four small feet with rubberized pads to prevent slipping on the surface of the table, as well as ventilation holes and a sticker with brief information about the product.

The plastic of which the instrument itself and its accessories are made appears to be of high quality, well finished, smooth to the touch and does not emit any odour.

Manual

A5 size manual printed on thick glossy paper. Its content is standard and covers all aspects of operation, as well as introduces the device and the name of the individual parts of the heater and safety measures when using it.

The main and most important for the user section of operation contains three step-by-step descriptions of the use of the device - as a warmer up to 40°C for baby food in bottles, up to 70°C for heating baby food and as a sterilizer. Each of the algorithms is accompanied by tips. For safe operation, in our opinion, a single study of the document is sufficient.

Control

Like the KT-2301, the heater is controlled by moving the thermostat to the desired position by the user. However, in Kitfort KT-2302, the switch itself is made in the form of a round regulator. It's easier to rotate. The move is step-by-step, it is simply impossible to miss the desired mode. Operating modes are standard for this type of device: milk formula heating up to 40 °C, baby food heating up to 70 °C, sterilization at 100 °C.

After plugging into the mains, the device emits a long single beep, and the indicator around the thermostat starts to glow orange. When the thermostat is moved to the operating position, the indicator changes its color to green. Green light is on during heating and keep warm mode.

The device switches off automatically after 8 hours when operating in the heating mode at 40 °C, after 3 hours at 70 °C. During sterilization, heating stops after about 15 minutes, after another five minutes, the auto-off function is activated. When turned off, an audible signal sounds.

So everything is simple and, which is important when operating this type of device, it is safe.

Operation

The procedure for preparing the device for operation is completely identical to that described above for Kitfort KT-2301. Recall that the instructions recommend bringing the water in the heater bowl to a boil. Then turn off the device, drain the water and repeat the operation 4-5 more times. We do not feed children, so we limited ourselves to one cycle of boiling and draining water before the first use. We did this to check whether the water becomes cloudy or not. The water didn't turn cloudy. We also did not feel any extraneous odors from the device when we first turned it on.

Easy operation. Pour about 450 ml of water into the bowl, place the basket, bottles or jars with baby food there, close the heater with a lid, set the required temperature and move away for a while. The device will first heat the water to the set temperature, then it will switch to the maintenance mode. In the temperature maintenance mode, the device periodically turns on, keeping the water temperature at the same level. At the end, turn the thermostat to the Off position, disconnect the heater from the mains and drain the water from the bowl. Warm-up time 90 ml of milk is about 10 minutes.

A few tips for optimal results:

• the water level in the bowl should be equal to or slightly higher than the liquid in the bottle or baby puree in the jar
• the water in the bowl must not exceed the maximum level: 1 cm from the top edge
• do not keep baby food on the keep warm mode for a long time to avoid spoilage
• when artificial feeding in a warmer, it is recommended to keep a bottle of water, and the mixture is added immediately before feeding
• Stir occasionally to evenly heat baby food
• Allow the heater to cool down for a few minutes before the next heating cycle

Sterilization with the Kitfort KT-2302 is easy and safe. Pour about 50 ml of water into the bowl. Install the basket, and in it - the bottle holder. Place the accessories to be sterilized upside down on the holder and close the heater with a lid. Set the thermostat to sterilization mode at 100 °C. After 15 minutes, the cycle will automatically end, the indicator will turn red. After another five minutes, the device will turn off.

The volume of the device is quite suitable both for helping to feed newborns and for heating baby food for older babies. When sterilizing, a large 260 ml baby bottle, nipple, pacifier and other accessories can be freely installed in the bowl.

Care

Drain the water from the warmer bowl after each use. Wipe the outside and inside of the appliance with a damp cloth. Accessories - bottle holder, basket and lid can be washed with warm water and a mild detergent. Do not place the body of the heater in water or use aggressive, abrasive or antibacterial cleaners for cleaning.

Once a month, the instructions recommend decalcifying the heater. To do this, mix 100 ml of table vinegar and 300 ml of cold water, pour the mixture into a bowl. Instead of vinegar, you can use citric acid based descaling agents. Then the device operates for 10 minutes in heating mode up to 40 °C. After that, it is recommended to turn off the device and leave the mixture in the bowl until the limescale is completely dissolved. It would be better, of course, that Kitfort indicated a specific period of time, because we cannot see whether the entire plaque has dissolved or not. Descaling is completed by draining the solution and thoroughly washing the heater bowl.

Testing

Our measurements

The power of the device during the operation of the heater varies between 262 and 275 W, which is slightly higher than the power declared by the manufacturer. The device works silently.

100 ml tap water boils in 4 minutes.

Practice Tests

Let's focus on how easy the appliance is to use, whether advertised temperatures match reality, and how long it takes to heat certain amounts of baby food.

Sterilization

We started with sterilization. Pour 50 ml of water into the bowl. Installed with the hollow part down on the holder of the 260 ml bottle, its accessories and one pacifier.

After about a couple of minutes the water boiled. After 13 minutes 7 seconds from the beginning of the operation, the device emitted three beeps, the indicator turned orange, indicating that the heater had finished working. After another five minutes, the device turned off, the indicator stopped burning.

The device consumed 0.058 kWh during the sterilization cycle.

Result: excellent

We were pleased with both the volume of the warmer, suitable for sterilizing bottles and other baby food items, and the automatic shut-off function.

Warming milk in a bottle

Put the bottle holder on the bottom, pour 450 ml of water into the bowl. Put inside one bottle with 100 ml of cow's milk at a temperature of 8 °C. The heating mode was set to 40 °C. The temperature of the water in the bowl and the milk in the bottle were periodically measured. The data obtained was summarized in the table:

Baby food warmer

80 g baby food in a glass jar at room temperature. 400 ml of water was poured into the heater bowl so that the water was just below the level of the lid of the puree jar.

We moved the thermostat to the pointer at 70 °C and started observing.

Continuous heating paused for 6 min 48 sec. The water temperature reached 66.2 °C. This means that the device switches to the temperature maintenance mode at the seventh minute of operation. At the same time, the heater is periodically turned on, the temperature approaches, but does not exceed 70 °C. For 10 minutes of operation in the warm-up mode, the energy consumption was 0. 035 kWh.

As the puree continued to heat up, it gradually reached the temperature of the water. So you should not neglect the recommendation to always taste baby food so that it is not too hot.

Conclusions

Kitfort KT-2302 perfectly copes with all the declared functions: heats milk, heats baby food, sterilizes bottles and other accessories for baby food. At the same time, the sterilization function is implemented so well (sufficient bowl volume and auto-off) that under certain conditions there is no need to purchase a separate sterilizer. The device looks nice and does not take up much space.

It can hold two baby bottles at the same time, making it suitable for parents of older babies or twins. The disadvantages include the lack of a compartment for storing the cord. So parents should be careful to ensure that the power cable does not hang over the edge of the table in any case, especially if the child has begun to crawl.

In addition to the purpose, both models of heaters have common features. The devices are made of safe materials, the workmanship is rated as high, the devices are safe and easy to use. Management and care do not cause any difficulties. Both heaters are equipped with three operating modes: 40 °C, 70 °C and 100 °C. In both devices, gentle and slow milk heating and long-term temperature maintenance are carried out. The method of heating is also the same - due to an external coolant. Similar heaters and heating duration - 90 ml of milk is heated to the desired temperature for about 10 minutes.

Kitfort KT-2301 differs, first of all, in its compact size and the limitations associated with it - you can warm up only one bottle no more than 15 cm high, and sterilize only one or two nipples or pacifiers. The device is equipped with a cord storage compartment.

Kitfort KT-2302 is more powerful and larger in size. Therefore, it can simultaneously heat up two bottles up to 0.4 l, as well as sterilize a complete set for baby food (bottle and its accessories). The sterilization process switches off automatically after approximately 15 minutes. Also, the device is equipped with auto-off modes after 8 hours of operation at 40 °C and after 3 hours at 70 °C. The device is equipped with sound signals. The indicator light functions much better and is easier on the user than the KT-2301. That is, the device can be considered more advanced than the KT-2301.

In our opinion, if there is a long-term stable need for heating (for example, a bottle-fed baby), then the Kitfort KT-2302 model is more preferable. If heating is required only periodically (for example, during the absence of a nursing mother), or the user does not need an additional sterilization function, or it is not at all clear whether such a device is needed or not, then Kitfort KT-2301 will be quite appropriate.
