Unhealthy diets kill 11 million people a year, scientists say.
Lancet, one of the most prestigious medical journals, published a study showing that our daily diet is more harmful than smoking and is the cause of one in five deaths in the world.
Scientists were not interested in the problem of obesity, but malnutrition, which harms the heart and causes cancer.
- Can meat cause breast cancer?
Salt in bread, soy sauce, or processed foods is one of the most debilitating and shortening of a person's life.
What is killing me?
A study by the independent research organization The Global Burden of Disease has identified eating habits that shorten life expectancy.
So, the most people in the world die from:
- excess salt - 3 million deaths
- insufficient consumption of whole grain cereals - 3 million deaths
- fruit deficiency - 2 million deaths
"Malnutrition - nuts" seeds, vegetables, fiber and omega-3 fatty acids, which are rich in seafood, are also the main "killer" of a person.

"We believe that proper nutrition is the key to good health around the world. It really matters," Professor Christopher Murray, director of the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington, told the BBC.
How is this killing me?
Of the 11 million deaths due to malnutrition, 10 million caused cardiovascular disease, and this explains why salt is truly white death.
Abuse of this product increases blood pressure, which in turn increases the risk of heart attacks and strokes.

Salt also damages the cardiovascular system and leads to heart failure.
But grains, fruits and vegetables have the opposite effect. They work as cardioprotectors and reduce the risk of developing heart disease.
Cancer and type 2 diabetes account for the remaining diet-related deaths.
Nuts and cereals? Again?
Research shows that people around the world consume little whole grains and nuts.
Active readers will note that these foods are part of the planet's diet, which, according to scientists, is able to protect the Earth from environmental disaster and feed 10 billion people.
Therefore, we will not refuse them.

Professor Nita Forukhi of the University of Cambridge explains: "These foods, while rich in healthy fats, are thought to add extra pounds. Most people don't see them as a staple food. Also, they're not cheap at all."

Are meat and sugar not our friends?
Fat and sugar: which is more harmful? Link between red meat and cancer risk. In recent years, these topics have attracted considerable attention in the world media.
"They don't really make us healthier, but a lack of fruits and vegetables, whole grains and nuts is much more harmful," said Professor Murray.
In addition, scientists have found that people also "abuse" carbonated drinks.
To solve the problem of unhealthy eating, scientists advise not to discuss the harm of sugar and fat, but to promote healthy foods.
Tasty, but harmful
Unhealthy food takes several years of life, scientists say.
However, Professor Murray cautions that this is only an average. In his opinion, it is better to ask yourself: "Will I die of a heart attack at 50? Will I get cancer at 40?"
Are there any successful countries?
Mediterranean countries, in particular France, Spain and Israel, have the lowest mortality rate in the world due to malnutrition.
The situation is worst among residents of South-East, South and Central Asia. They top the mortality rate for this reason.
- the lowest death rate due to malnutrition was recorded in Israel - 89 per 100,000 people per year
- Uzbekistan tops this ranking - 892 per 100,000 people per year
Japan and China have different attitudes to salt.
China consumes huge amounts of it with soy and other sauces, which are an important part of the national cuisine.
However, the growing popularity of processed foods only increases the amount of salt in the diet. China tops the list of countries with the highest death rate from an excess of this product.
In Japan, the situation is different.
Professor Murray explains: “Japan is very interesting, 30-40 years ago they consumed as much salt as China does today. fruits and vegetables that protect against heart disease."

How is it in the UK?
The UK lags behind France, Denmark and Belgium in nutritional quality.
The British do not eat enough vegetables and fruits, whole grains and nuts.
Research shows that 14% of British deaths are due to poor diet.
What is the result?
"It's not the weight that counts, it's the quality of the food," explains Professor Murray. "Eat less salt and more vegetables and fruits, whole grains and nuts.
