Infant Formula Resources | NCDHHS

NCDHHS works in partnership with parents, caregivers, medical providers and WIC agencies to ensure safe and nutritious options for North Carolina families to feed infants. We have developed resources to support you and your baby.

Important Reminders

  • Remember that most families have multiple safe options for their infants even if their usual formula is not in stock. This graphic of standard formula options can help you make decisions (English, Spanish). If you can’t find formula or can’t find your baby’s typical formula, work with your child’s health care provider to determine the best feeding plan.
  • Do NOT water down your baby’s formula to stretch it out, it can be extremely dangerous to your baby to do so.
  • Do NOT make homemade formula. A baby's nutritional needs are very specific, and homemade formula may contain too little or too much of certain vitamins and minerals, like iron.
  • Do NOT buy formula from online auctions, unknown individuals, or unknown origins. Storage and shipping conditions may impact formula safety.

Information on Formula Imported from Other Countries

The federal government has made changes to allow more infant formula from other countries to be sold in the United States. Families can follow updates and product information on the FDA’s website.

With more formula from other countries on store shelves, review these recommendations for using imported formula:

  • Follow the mixing instructions on the product label. These instructions may be very different from what you are used to. Some instructions will be in metric units. For more information, review the FDA’s Tips for Preparing Imported Infant Formula.
  • Do not try to import formula yourself, because you can't be sure it meets U.S. safety standards. Rely on what has been approved by the FDA. Contact your pediatrician if you are unsure if a formula has been properly imported.
  • Imported formulas may be labeled as "Stage 1" (for the first six months after birth, but generally can be used throughout the first year), and "Stage 2" (just for babies who are over 6 months of age).
  • The American Academy of Pediatrics also has helpful guidance on using imported formula

Keeping Infants Safe During National Formula Shortage

There are few things that worry a parent more than their children’s health and safety. The ongoing infant formula shortage due to supply chain issues, which worsened due to a major formula recall in February, has left many caregivers feeling concerned and anxious about their options for safely feeding their infants. Learn more here.

ALERT: Powder Infant Formula Recall

The FDA warns consumers not to use certain powdered infant formula produced in an Abbott Nutrition facility in Michigan. Consumers should avoid using Similac, Alimentum or EleCare powdered infant formulas if the first two digits of the code are 22 through 37; the code on the container contains K8, SH or Z2; the expiration date is April 1, 2022, or later.

WIC participants with these formulas are encouraged to return their product(s) to their local grocery stores or health clinic.

To find out if a product is included in this recall, visit similacrecall.com or call 1-800-986-8540. You can also check out the Abbott Frequently Asked Questions for more information.

How to Apply For WIC

It's as easy as 1-2-3!

Call 1-855-4-SCDHEC (1-855-472-3432) to make an appointment.

WIC has day, afternoon and early evening appointments available. Select clinics may also have evening and Saturday appointments available. WIC even has walk-in hours!

Remember, please bring the family members applying for WIC services to the appointment (you, your child and/or your infant). If the appointment is for a child, only a parent or legal caretaker who lives with the child can bring the child and complete the paperwork.

At your appointment, you will need to bring the information listed in the 3-Steps to WIC.

WIC Supports Foster Families

All foster children under age 5 are automatically eligible for WIC. Foster families play an important role in their children's growth and development. Learn more about how WIC helps foster families here.

Voter Registration at WIC Clinics

The National Voter Registration Act (NVRA) of 1993, Public Law 103-31, provides that WIC clinics serve as voter registration assistance sites throughout South Carolina.  Voter registration forms are available at the WIC clinics.  Participants may also register to vote at https://www.scvotes.org/south-carolina-voter-registration-information.

Fraud Prevention

The South Carolina WIC program is intended for families in need of nutritional education and support.  WIC foods and formula are to be used for the WIC participant only and cannot be sold or given away.  WIC foods not used by the participant should be returned to the local WIC site.  Fraud and abuse take resources away from those who need them most. Learn more about WIC fraud prevention.
