Orphaned Baby Squirrels Find Love With Mama Cat And Kitten Siblings

A mother’s love knows no bounds when it comes to caring for babies in need. And animal moms don’t discern when raising young, taking in babies who need help, no matter what species they might be. Instinct tells them the young need nurturing, even if the mom and baby are of a totally different make.
Because every tale told of a mother’s love warms the heart, here’s another to fill your day with joy.
Pusha is a beautiful gray cat with fern green eyes who calls the Bakhchisaray Miniature Park in Crimea home. She’s used to wildlife as the architectural miniatures park also houses a zoo. It’s a pretty cool place for a cat to reside. There, Pusha not only sees other animals, but she also greets park visitors and gets to play giant among the miniatures!
Imagine the lucky visitors who catch Pusha padding across the Swallow’s Nest. She’d be a veritable feline Godzilla walking through the mini model of the castle known as “the symbol of Crimea.” Only, Pusha would be much cuter and fluffier towering over the little scene.
A good cat, she’s also a great mom with a big heart for babies in need.
A Mother’s Love Knows No Bounds
Not so long ago, Pusha became the mother of four adorable kittens. And she took such beautiful care of them, always doting and making sure they got enough to eat. Before long, though, this family of five would become a family of nine!
Inside Edition/YouTubeAs park employee Olga Fateeva explained, “On one beautiful day, visitors brought us these wonderful squirrels in a box.”
The squirrels were quite young and still required mother’s milk. Realizing their need, park staff had an idea. As Pusha had just given birth to her kittens, “we decided to introduce them to her, and she accepted them.”
At first, the squirrels weren’t so sure about joining the cat and her kittens. Their instincts recognized Pusha as a predator, but once they understood their new foster mom meant no harm and only love, the squirrel babies settled in with their feline family just fine.
Together, the kittens and squirrels have formed an adorable litter, and Pusha is so proud of her darling children. And like siblings, the babies do everything as a unit.

Because Pusha has so many mouths to feed, staff supplements the squirrel babies with goat milk to be sure they’re getting all the food they need. Between Pusha and the caring animal lovers of the park, these squirrels are headed for a good life.
Maybe it shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise that a cat would adopt squirrels. After all, baby squirrels are known as kittens or kits!

In Barnaul, a cat nursed baby squirrels

Half-dead baby squirrels a few days old were brought to the Chance for Life cat shelter by Artyom Kucher, a well-known in the city of Aibolit, the head of the Noah's Ark animal relief organization, on April 17.
- The squirrel dragged the kids to a private house in Barnaul and left them, - said Artyom. “Most likely she was sick. It can be seen that she could not cope with the cubs, so she threw it to people. The owner of the house looked out for the parent during the day, hoping that he would return. He guarded the kids from afar, did not let the dogs out. The squirrels climbed on top of each other, trying to keep warm.
When he realized that the squirrel would not return, the man began to look for someone who could help them. And so it came out to me.
Cat milk
It was necessary to act quickly, Artyom was advised to turn to Yulia Shelkovnikova, she has experience in nursing newborn rodents.
The squirrels were in critical condition by that time - severely dehydrated and emaciated. The squeaky red lumps were placed next to a recently given birth cat and… froze for a second. You never know how the animal will react.
- The cat, as if nothing had happened, looked at the new babies and let them in, and after feeding she licked them like her own, - says the employee of the shelter. - The kittens are still too young to react aggressively to newly-made brothers and sisters. Well, the cat's milk came up to the squirrels.
Yulia, together with her mother-cat, fought for the life of baby squirrels all day long. Still, there was not enough milk for such a crowd, and the shelter employee herself fed the kids from the nipple every two or three hours.
But the squirrels were still too bad, out of four only two survived.
In 10 days the foster children have grown up and, unlike kittens, have already opened their eyes. Everyone hopes that the critical moment has passed and that the two will survive. In nature, squirrels live on mother's milk for two months, which means that the cat will have to feed foster children for some time. And then they will be sent to a squirrel nursery, because in the wild they most likely will not survive.
It is worth mentioning that the cat that adopted baby squirrels was saved from starvation two days before. Shelter employees took her from the entrance of a residential building, they could not sterilize her - she was waiting for kittens. They didn’t even have time to give a name, and after the story with the adopted children they called Belka.
There are about 200 cats in the Chance for Life shelter. Volunteers sterilize them, treat them, feed them, find good hands for them. They work with philanthropic funds.
- The situation with stray cats is getting worse every year, Yulia laments. “People throw animals out on the street, regardless of breed and color. We come across quite expensive cats, but a rare breed, unfortunately, does not eliminate human betrayal.

Restless heart
For Yulia Shelkovnikova, this is not the first experience of nursing animals. She once rescued a newborn baby rat who was destined for a snake dinner at a pet store. But the snake, apparently, was full, and during the day ignored the still live food. Seeing the torment of the rat, the woman took him home from the pet store. I fed milk from a nipple every two to three hours. The baby rodent survived, found good hands and pleased his mistress for a long time.
Barnaul residents, aware of Yulia's kindness, periodically bring newborn hedgehogs left without a mother to the shelter. Adult hedgehogs are hit by cars on the highway, people take them home for a few days as a toy and do not think that this is someone's breadwinner.
Hedgehogs are also fed with milk through the nipple, and when they gain strength, they are returned to their natural habitat. Now on account of the shelter for cats and rescued squirrels.
This is not the first case in Barnaul when a cat adopts baby squirrels. In 2008, in the Altai Regional Children's Ecological Center, two cats, Muska and Duska, fed newborn squirrels and a fox.

SIMFEROPOL, May 5 - RIA Novosti Crimea. Residents of the district began to bring small baby squirrels to the zoo of the Bakhchisaray Miniature Park, which the cat Murka readily feeds.
