Sweet Potato & Chicken Puree for Baby

I've got another recipe for your little one they are just going to love. It's a sweet potato and chicken puree for baby made with bone broth, nourishing spices, and pears. It's perfect as part of meal time or to throw into a pouch for on-the-go use!

Can I just buy baby food at the grocery store?

Let's chat about purees, shall we?

They may sound like something you should just get your hands on at the store, but let me tell you why you should try making something at home instead...!

I've spent my fair share of time hunting down emergency pouches at the grocery store. Sure, there are some better options than there used to be out there.

However, most baby food pouches are mainly made with fruit, and do not have any (or barely any) high quality fats or protein in them.

In my opinion, these are two nutrients that are extremely essential for your baby's development and growth.

That is especially true when they are so young and transitioning out of drinking breast milk, formula, etc.

Purees vs Baby Led Weaning

Let's chat steaming and pureeing food versus the baby led weaning method, which is what I typically have followed with Sophie.

Let me be very clear here. Sophie is a good eater to the core.

However, there are periods of time (sometimes meals, sometimes days, sometimes a whole week), where she just doesn't display her regular interest in eating solids.

I've had times where I just wish I had a nutrient dense puree on hand because I know she'd guzzle it down without hesitation.

Sometimes I even have all of the ingredients handy, but I don't have enough time to carve out for cooking the food and blending it in the blender, food processor, etc.

I was so grateful when I learned about Tommee Tippee's Quick-Cook Baby Food Maker.

Here are a few reasons why this baby food steamer and blender is so great:

  1. By steaming the food, it is holding on to as many of its nutrients as possible.
  2. The food holds on to its natural flavor, giving our children realistic expectations for what chicken should taste like.

What ingredients will I need to make sweet potato and chicken puree?

The list is short but full of nutrients and goodness.

Here is what you will need:

  • Sweet potato
  • Organic, boneless & skinless chicken (I like to use thighs as the darker meat provides more iron content)
  • Pear
  • Bone broth
  • Cinnamon
  • Nutmeg

I wouldn't recommend any substitutions really, unless your child has a problem with the spices.

I do highly recommend using bone broth instead of traditional chicken broth, as it has a high amount of calcium, magnesium, collagen, and gelatin.

Basically, these are all things that are great for all of us... especially our little ones! 🙂

Can I freeze this sweet potato and chicken puree for baby?

Heck yeah, you can. I actually recommend it.

When Sophie was first transitioning to purees and solid food, I'd divide the puree into 1-ounce cube molds and freeze them in a tray. After they were frozen solid, I'd pop them into a Ziplock freezer bag and date them for 2 months from that day.

It's so convenient because you can simply pop out a 1-ounce freezer portion into a small glass container and let it defrost in the refrigerator over night.

The next day, your babe will have access to this nourishing puree all day long if they want it.

Of course now that Sophie is older, she can put back 1 ounce of this goodness no problem. She'll typically eat 4 ounces or so as a snack.

Girl can eat.

Spinach and Bone Broth Waffles

  • ▢ 1/2 cup sweet potato peeled and diced
  • ▢ 1/2 cup organic chicken thighs boneless & skinless, cubed
  • ▢ 1/4 cup pear peeled and diced

  • Use the jug with no basket and make sure the lid is in the correct orientation. Add ingredients to the jug.

This chicken puree is a great way for a baby to first try chicken. The meat is cooked and blended with sweet potato carrot and onion for extra flavour and nutrition.

Reasons to Love this Puree

  • NUTRITION: In general, for 6- to 12-month-old babies, you want to focus on foods that are nutrient-dense and packed with iron.
    Chicken is a great source of protein and contains many nutrients that babies need to thrive. These include vitamins B3, B6 & B12, zinc, choline and selenium and iron.
    Sweet potato is also a non-heme source of iron and contains vitamin C which aids the absorption of iron.

  • TEXTURE: Chicken can be dry and gritty/chalky when blended unless you have a very powerful blender and add a good bit of liquid.
    Cooking the chicken with some vegetables helps with the texture.
  • TASTE: Not only do the vegetables help with texture, but they also provide lovely flavour. If your baby has previously enjoyed sweet potato puree or carrot puree then this is a good way to introduce chicken.
  • FREEZER FRIENDLY: Make a batch and freeze in small portions for busier days/evenings.

  • CHICKEN – Use skinless, boneless chicken breast or thigh meat.
  • CHICKEN STOCK / BROTH – Chicken stock/broth adds great flavour but most are unsuitable for babies as they are high in salt. You can make your own baby friendly chicken stock or hunt down some low sodium stocks/stock cubes. You can also water down the stock or simply replace it with water.
    A baby under the age of 1 year can only have up to 1g of salt per day so read the label and check the salt levels. Food labels may sometimes write sodium instead of salt, to find the salt equivalent simply multiply the sodium number by 2.5.

  • SWEET POTATO & CARROT – Added for flavour, texture and nutrition. Chicken puree can often be dry/chalky in texture. Adding the carrot and sweet potato helps with the texture and adds a lovely sweet flavour.
  • ONION – Added for flavour.

Process Shots (and Cooking Tips)

  1. SAUTE ONION: This releases the natural sweetness of the onion and provides a lovely flavour base, take 2-3 minutes to do this over medium-low heat.
  2. SAUTE CHICKEN: Add the chicken and stir for 30 seconds or so, just until the chicken turns opaque.
  3. ADD CARROT, SWEET POTATO AND STOCK: Add the remaining ingredients. TIP: Make sure to chop your sweet potato and carrot small so that it cooks quicker.
  4. SIMMER for 15 mins or until the vegetables are fork-tender.
  5. ADD TO BLENDER/FOOD PROCESSOR: Use a slotted spoon to remove the chicken and vegetables from the cooking stock.
  6. BLEND until desired consistency is reached. Add tablespoons of the stock to thin the puree. I find around 3-4 tablespoons a good amount.

Storage & Reheating Instructions


  • You can store this chicken puree, in an airtight container, in the refrigerator for up to 2 days.
  • Do not store food from a bowl you have previously given your baby. “Double Dipping” from the spoon-to mouth- to container can introduce bacteria from your baby’s saliva which can grow and may cause food poisoning. 
    Throw away any leftover food from a bowl/container you have been using to feed your baby.


  • Spoon the puree into ice cube trays or small containers. Cover and freeze until solid.
  • When ice cubes are frozen, remove cubes from the tray and store them in a resealable plastic freezer bag or freezer container.
  • Label package with contents and date. Use within 2 months.
  • The best way to defrost purees is to refrigerate overnight and use them within 24 hours. You can also reheat from frozen.


  • It is important that you reheat baby food until piping hot to kill off bacteria. Allow to cool and always test the temperature of the food before giving your baby.
  • You can reheat using a microwave or on the stovetop. Make sure to continually stir the food to ensure it is properly heated and to get rid of hot spots.
  • Only re-heat once and discard any leftover puree that has already been reheated.

Chicken Puree

Chicken cooked with sweet potato, carrot and onion and then blended to make a delicious puree for babies.

  • ▢ ½ tablespoon Olive Oil
  • ▢ ½ small Onion ,finely chopped
  • ▢ 160g (1 cup chopped) Boneless Skinless Chicken Breast or Thighs ,chopped into approx. 2.5 – 3cm (1 inch) cubes
  • ▢ 300g / 11oz (2 cups chopped) Sweet Potato ,peeled and chopped into approx. 1-1.5cm (½ inch) cubes
  • ▢ 80g / ⅓ cup Carrot peeled and chopped into approx. 1- 1.5 cm (½ inch) cubes
  • ▢ 250ml / 1 cup Chicken Stock homemade or baby friendly (see notes)
  • Heat the oil in a medium saucepan over medium heat, add the onion and saute for 2-3 minutes.

  • Add the chicken and saute for around 30 seconds, until the chicken turns opaque.

  • Add the sweet potato, carrot and stock. Bring to a boil, cover and gently simmer for 15 mins or until the vegetables are fork tender.

  • Using a slotted spoon, transfer the chicken and vegetables to a blender or food processor, reserving the cooking liquid. Puree until desired consistency. Add tablespoons of the cooking broth to help achieve thinner, smoother texture.

Delicious and hearty stewed potatoes with chicken for breakfasts and lunches of your beloved child

This is the same village chicken that both children and their parents missed so much.

600 gr. nine0021 chicken fillet "Kudashka"
1 medium bulb onion
1 kg. crumbly potatoes
1 root vegetable carrots
1 tsp. flour
2 st. l. vegetable oil
1 medium vegetable fresh tomato
2 gr. salt

For garnish

100 g rice
3 g salt
bundle greenery

This is a recipe for children from 5 years old. The dish will surely become one of the most favorite foods of the child. Fragrant chicken with stewed potatoes is delicious for almost everyone.

What you need to prepare a meal

For the use of chicken fillet "Kudashka", for the quality and naturalness of which you can be calm. All other ingredients must also be selected as fresh as possible.

Recipe for stewed potatoes with chicken pieces

The method does not require much time and special skills. Any housewife who is familiar with the basics of cooking the most ordinary dishes will cope with it.

Step 1

Wash, peel and dice carrots and onions. Put a saucepan on the stove. Add vegetable oil to it, heat it up. Place the vegetables there and saute them over medium heat. nine0003

Step 2

Rinse chicken fillet “Kudashka” under cold running water, cut into medium-sized pieces and place them in a bowl with sautéed vegetables, add heat and fry for 10 minutes. Add some water, cover and simmer for 15 minutes. until complete boiling. After that, add water again to such a level that the chicken is closed and continue to stew with the lid closed over low heat for 40 minutes.

Step 3

Scald the tomato with boiling water, peel, mash and place in the meat. Salt. Continue simmering for another 5 minutes, place chopped potatoes in a saucepan and add water to the level of the potatoes, and even a little lower. Simmer another 20 min. until ready. nine0003

Step 4

Drain some of the liquid, stir in the flour thoroughly, without lumps, pour the resulting contents back into the saucepan. Mix everything, boil for another 2 minutes. and remove from the stove. The dish is ready to be served after it has cooled down
