Do you like historical Korean dramas? Don't miss this list of the top 25 - it will be useful for both avid fans of the genre and newcomers.
Do you like historical Korean dramas, or sageuk as they are also called? Then you can't miss this list of 25 historical dramas - it will be useful for both avid fans of the genre and newcomers alike. Do not forget to write in the comments below the article which drama from the list you like the most!
Those who are just starting to dive into the exciting world of dramas are constantly faced with a difficult choice - what to watch now? Most likely, you mainly rely on the advice of friends or reviews on the Internet, but sometimes they do not help you choose a drama to watch, because there are many genres in Korean dramas, and it can be difficult for a beginner to understand them. We have already compiled a list of the best romantic comedy dramas, now it's time for historical dramas.
If you're a novice dramatist, you might find Korean historical dramas a bit boring. But this is just a matter of taste, because historical dramas are completely different, and not all of them contain boring and difficult to understand events.
There are some sageuks that are breathtaking to watch - just imagine a normal modern drama but with costumes and scenery from a bygone era. In general, historical dramas come in all sorts of tastes - from light and humorous with a fairly simple plot, to more intricate, in which political intrigue is paid much more attention than a romantic line. You just have to make your choice.
Experienced drama players have probably already seen all the series from the list, and if not, then it's time to fill up your Wishlist with another great drama. Tell us in the comments, which series from the list would you recommend to your friend?
1. Moonlight Lovers: Scarlet Heart of Ryeo (2016)
Cast: Lee Jun Ki, IU, Kim Ji Soo, Ji Hye Ran, Byun Baek Hyun
This drama revolves around a girl from our time , which is suddenly transported back a thousand years to the Goryeo era. She enters the body of a relative of the wife of the 8th prince at the court of the king. She later falls in love with the 4th Prince Wang So, who is known for his cruelty and unpredictable nature.
"Moon Lovers" did not receive high ratings in Korea, but won the hearts of fans overseas. Rest assured that this epic and tragic drama will make you feel a range of emotions and make your heart beat faster. Plus, you're bound to fall in love with Lee Joon Ki (Wang Seo) because he's especially good at bad guy roles (and you'll see his name on this list again and again).
All in all, if you want to go on an emotional roller coaster, you should definitely watch this heartbreaking drama.
2. Moon Embracing the Sun (2012)
Cast: Kim Min Seo, Jung Il Woo, Han Ga In, Kim Soo Hyun
Moon Embracing the Sun is a historical drama with fantasy elements, which takes place during the Joseon era. She tells us a love story between a king and a shaman, forcedly separated by political intrigues and dark magic. But they are destined to be together again - the moon must embrace the sun.
This is a fairly simple historical drama with fictional characters, a touching romance, and just a little bit of politics. So if you prefer romance over traditional historical dramas, you like tearful scenes, as well as some suspense and action, then pay attention to this series! No wonder it has received cult status in Korea.
3. “Light of the Moon Outlined by a Cloud” (2016)
Cast: Park Bo Gum, Kim Yoo Jung, Jung Jin Young, Chae Soo Bin, Kwak Dong Young of the Moon Outlined by a Cloud" is set in the Joseon era. This interesting coming-of-age story follows the relationship between a crown prince and a girl who is forced to impersonate a man and play the role of a eunuch in the palace. It is very interesting to watch how the prince's feelings for the main character develop, and even before he finds out who she really is.
The drama absolutely deservedly received a bunch of awards, including phenomenal acting and soundtrack. This sweet and touching story is sure to steal your heart.
4. Aran and the Magistrate (2012)
Cast: Shin Min Ah, Lee Joon Ki, Jung Soo Young, Hwang Bo Ra
realities, then Aran and the Magistrate is just perfect, especially if you like romance. This fantasy series is based on a rather dark Korean legend from the Joseon era.
The story is about the murdered daughter of a magistrate. The ghost of a beautiful girl cannot find peace and haunts every person who tries to take the post of magistrate. And one day, the main character, who, by the way, is played by Lee Jun Ki, begins to apply for this place.
Of course, the drama significantly reworked the legend and added new colors to it. The series has created its own amazing and multi-layered world with unique mythology and magical creatures. Therefore, "Aran and the Magistrate" is just perfect for all fans of fantasy dramas.
5. Empress Ki (2013)
Cast: Ji Chang Wook, Ha Ji Won, Joo Jin Mo, Cho Woo Jin real events. Its main character, Nyan Ying, was originally a slave during the Goryeo era. She managed to break free, but is forced to pretend to be a man named Ki Seung Nyan.
She even gathers her band of robbers and frees other girls from being sold as slaves to China. But everything changes when she simultaneously develops feelings for the king of Goryeo and for the Mongol prince, the future ruler of China.
"Empress Ki" became an international hit and the second highest rated Korean drama after "Jewel in the Palace". You yourself will not notice how you cannot tear yourself away from it and watch all the series in one gulp!
6. Gu Family Book (2013)
Starring: Yoo Young Suk, Lee Yu Bi, Sung Joon, Lee Sung Jae, Jo Sung Ha, Bae Suzy, Lee Seung Gi, Choi Jin Hyuk
This is a romantic fantasy drama about a half-human half-god (the son of an ordinary girl and the guardian spirit of Mount Jiri) who was raised in a foster family after a tragedy happened to his parents. Moreover, he learns about his true nature only when he falls in love. And since then, he has been forced to fight with his nature for the well-being of loved ones.
If you're new to historical dramas, Gu Family Book is a great way to get into the genre, especially if you like magic and mysticism. Do not think long, just try to watch this series, you will like it!
7. Six Flying Dragons (2015)
Starring: Kim Myung Min, Yoo Ah In, Shin Se Kyung, Byun Yo Han, Yoon Gyun Sang, Cheon Ho Jin
Since this is a scripted drama “Deep Rooted Trees” and “The Great Queen Seondeok,” you can guess that “Six Flying Dragons” is a series no less heartbreaking and tense than its predecessors. The story details the turning point in Korean history, the transition from the Goryeo period to Joseon.
The main action of the historical drama revolves around six young ambitious people, the same "six dragons", and their conflicts. In the beginning, they are all allies, but gradually begin to drift apart and use each other to their advantage. In the course of the plot, it is very difficult to take sides, since there is no division into absolutely evil or good characters. They are all just people with their weaknesses.
Six Flying Dragons is a very action-packed drama with tons of great action scenes, political intrigue, betrayals, and of course, a dash of romance and a couple of heartbreaks to keep you glued to the screen. Despite its length (already 50 episodes), this exciting drama is watched in one breath.
8. Deep Rooted Tree (2011)
Starring: Han Suk Kyu, Shin Se Kyung, Jang Hyuk and it is very far from romantic comedies. So before you sit down to watch, make sure you are ready for intricate political intrigue, conspiracies and mysteries, generously seasoned with thriller and tragedy elements. If you like dramatic and heartbreaking yet witty plots, then "A Tree with Deep Roots" has every chance of making it to your list of favorite dramas.
The story begins with Prince Sejong tragically instigating the death of his family and slaves in an attempt to protect them from his cruel father, King Taejong. Fortunately, two young slaves still managed to survive. One of them grew up as a servant at the palace, while the other became a fearless warrior, thirsting for revenge and sworn to kill the king. Years later, he returns to the palace, where he immediately becomes involved in the investigation of a series of mysterious murders.
9. "Pearl of the Palace" (2003)
Cast: Lee Young Ae, Ji Jin Hee, Hong Ri Na, Im Ho
in the history of this country it was possible to defeat social discrimination. She began her career as a cook in the palace and eventually became interested in medicine and became the king's personal physician.
The drama is based on the story of a real-life brave and determined woman. In addition, the series will feature touching friendships, tragic love stories, and political intrigue (which, however, as is often the case in Korean dramas, are quite predictable).
It will probably be hard for you to muster up the courage to start watching another 50+ episode historical drama. However, it became an international hit and aired in over 90 countries, making it the first series to popularize Korean culture around the world.
10. Rebel Hong Gil Dong (2017)
Starring: Yoon Kyun Sang, Chae Soo Bin, Kim Ji Suk, Lee Ha Ni, Kim Sang Joon
The drama is set during the reign of a notorious tyrant Yongsan. The protagonist of the series is Hong Gil Dong, the first Korean revolutionary and a favorite of the people. Born into a family of servants, at a time when they cannot stand up for themselves and defend themselves against the terrible treatment of the nobility, Gil Dong becomes the leader of a gang of smugglers who steal from the rich and distribute the loot to the poor.
Gil Dong is a Korean Robin Hood, whose name is known to everyone in Korea, and who often acts as the hero of various films, comics and video games. “Rebel Hong Gil Dong” is a very emotional and bright drama that you will remember for a long time!
11.
Princess Beloved (2011)Cast: Park Shi Hoo, Moon Chae Won, Kim Yong Chul, Song Jung Ho, Hong Soo Hyun, Lee Min Woo
60+ episodes like the rest on the list. On the contrary, it is rather short, and the plot also deviates from many canons. The focus here is a love story, not political intrigues and conspiracies. They, of course, are also present, but only in connection with the central storyline, which makes them more interesting. So "Beloved of a Princess" is worth your attention, even if you're the kind of dramatist who usually tries to avoid period dramas.
The drama's romantic plot revolves around doomed lovers, who can easily be called Korea's Romeo and Juliet. She is the daughter of the crown prince who is about to become king, and he is the son of her father's sworn enemy. Of course, the life of the unfortunate girl becomes incredibly complicated when her father opposes her lover.
By drama standards, the series can be called short - it has only 24 episodes. Check out the list of other short mini-dramas that you can binge watch in one weekend.
12. Joseon Shooter (2014)
Cast: Lee Joon Ki, Nam Sang Mi, Jung Hye Bin, Han Joo Wan, Yoo Sung
drama, romance, adventure and action? If so, then be sure to watch this exciting series about a badass rebellious shooter. Most likely, the fact that Lee Joon Ki is playing in the series will already be enough to interest you, because this handsome man is simply made for historical dramas.
The plot revolves around Park Yun Gang, a young swordsman and the son of the head of the royal guard. His carefree life ends at the moment when his father is killed and his sister is given into slavery. On the same day, he swears that he will avenge his father and free his sister. But how is he going to do it? He impersonates another person and swaps his sword for a gun (remember that the action takes place in 19th century Joseon, when firearms were still new). He just wanted revenge, but very quickly became a hero in the eyes of people.
13. The King's Daughter Soo Baek Hyang (2013)
Cast: Seo Hyo Jin, Seo Woo, Cho Hyun Jae, Lee Jae Ryong, Jung Tae Soo, Myung Se Bin, Yoon Tae Young
As the title suggests, the drama is about the eldest daughter of Muryeong, King of Baekje (one of the three kingdoms in Korea during the Unjin period). The righteous Soo Baek Hyang has always been taught to be content with what she has and not want more. Due to her character, she was never able to become a princess, because her younger ambitious sister took her rightful place. Soon, Soo Baek Hyang becomes the leader of a secret spy organization that ferrets out state secrets.
If you're looking for a long and gripping historical drama with a twisted plot that you can cry over, you should definitely check out The King's Daughter.
14. "Queen for 7 Days" (2017)
Cast: Young Woo Jin, Park Min Young, Lee Dong Gon, Yoo Min Kyu, Song Eun Seo
This historical drama is based on the tragic love story of a king Yeoka and Queen Dangyeong, who was dethroned just a week after her coronation. There was a prophecy that all sorts of troubles await her family if she contacts the royal family, so she is expelled from the palace and from her home.
But despite all efforts, you cannot run away from fate. She constantly brings Dakyung and the crown prince together, and it seems that at every turn they are pursued by evil fate. Over time, the girl finds herself in the thick of the confrontation between the crown prince and the king.
If you're looking for a captivating and genuinely interesting storyline, an incredibly beautiful picture, and a very intricate and dramatic love line, then "Queen for 7 Days" should be on your watch list.
15. A King's Love (2017)
Cast: Im Si Wan, Im Yoon Ah, Hong Jong Hyun, Yoon Chang Young, Park Hwan Hee
Kings tend to lead very lonely lives and have little people they can rely on. The king in this historical drama has only one true friend. So imagine the hell he goes through when he gets caught up in a tragic love triangle with his friend - both fall in love with the same girl. And this is a love triangle in the literal sense (and not as usual), because the girl also sincerely loves both men. But one of them is still a little more.
The amazing attention to detail selection of costumes and sets, as well as the superb filming, will be a real treat for the eyes and will take you to Korea. A tense and twisted plot will make you bounce on the spot from the experience.
16. Shine or Go Crazy (2015)
Cast: Jang Hyuk, Oh Yeon Seo, Lee Ha Ni, Im Joo Hwan, Lee Deok Hwa
This historical drama tells us Wang's fictional love story Seo, Prince of Goryeo, who later became the famous King Gwangjong, and Princess of the Baarhae Dynasty. The prince was banished from the palace due to a prophecy that said he would bring bloodshed and death to the imperial family.
He grew up in the wilderness and one day met Princess Shin Yul, who also grew up away from the palace, and who in turn was prophesied that one day she would become the salvation of a foreign country and bring peace to it. Will the prophecies come true now that the fates of these two are closely intertwined?
You will definitely fall in love with this incredibly cute and "chemical" couple, and enjoy watching the drama from the first to the last episode. She has everything to stay in your heart forever - romance, humor, as well as a little drama and action.
17. Queen Seondeok (2009)
Starring: Lee Yeo Won, Go Hyun Jung, Park Ye Jin, Yoo Seung Ho, Kim Nam Gil, Um Tae Woon
The historical drama is set in Silla, one of the three kingdoms of ancient Korea (Goguryeo and Baekje already known to you were the other two) and tells the story of Seondeok, who became the first female ruler of the state in Korean history. Of course, it is worth considering that although the drama is based on the life of a real queen, most of the story is still fictional.
This series has been a real hit in Asian countries, and you can be sure that its exciting plot twists will captivate you as well.
18. Prison Flower (2016)
Cast: Jin Se Yeon, Go Soo, Park Ju Mi, Choi Tae Joon, Jung Joon Ho
Prison Flower is not just a simple love story story. The drama raises themes of respect, inner beauty, and compassion. Ok Nyo (Jin Se Yeon), our sweet and witty main character, has all these qualities.
She was born and raised in a prison during the Joseon era. She later becomes a warden, but has a good disposition and helps the poor and unjustly accused. If you are looking for an interesting story that details the life of the people of that time, then rather watch this drama!
19. "Faith" (2012)
Cast: Lee Min Ho, Kim Hee Sun, Yoo Oh Sun, Ji Yoon Ho, Yoon Gyun Sang
This historical drama tells the story of a female plastic surgeon from our time , which is transferred to the 14th century by a warrior from the Goryeo era. He is the captain of the royal guard who wants a doctor to save the life of a badly injured queen. The main character realizes that she no longer has a way back, and at this time the warrior begins to have feelings for her.
This is an ideal fantasy drama for those who like unpredictable plot twists and when it is not clear until the very end which of the characters is positive and which is negative. Also, this series is a great opportunity to take a break from the more traditional and terribly long historical dramas.
20. Il Ji Mae (2008)
Starring: Han Hyo Joo, Park Shi Hoo, Lee Joon Ki, Lee Young Ah
Il Ji Mae is another Korean hero who can be compared to Robin Good. He also robs corrupt officials and distributes money to the poor. He does this at night and always leaves behind an image of a plum tree branch at the crime scene.
However, his main purpose is not to rob, but to find the owner of the special sword that killed his entire family. During his adventures, he falls in love with a noble girl who sincerely admires him. You can be sure that this drama, especially its awesome fight scenes, will give you a lot of positive emotions.
21. Mirror of the Witch (2016)
Cast: Kim Sae Ron, Yoon Shi Yoon, Kwak Si Yang, Jang Hee Jin
How about a mysterious and dark story set in the Joseon era? “Mirror of the Witch” is a combination of a historical fantasy drama and a creepy mystery that will leave no one indifferent. The series is equally far from typical Korean dramas and lighthearted romantic comedies (although there will still be a couple of sweet episodes), but if you like gothic stories, then Mirror of the Witch is the perfect option to watch. Although keep in mind that although the plot of the drama is catchy from the first episode, the action develops rather slowly.
The series is about two twins, a prince and a princess, who are under a curse - they are doomed to bring death to everyone they love. The wicked witch persuades the queen to sacrifice the life of one child in order to save another from a curse. Parents chose a girl as a victim, since she could not inherit the throne. She is sent to the deep forest, but the girl manages to survive and spend 17 years like this, not knowing anything about her past, until she meets a young doctor who wants to save her.
22. Chronicle of the Three Kingdoms: The Tale of Jumong (2006)
Cast: Song Il Guk, Han Hyo Jin, Kim Seung Soo
when he was a prince, and ending with how he went to establish his kingdom.
"Chronicle of the Three Kingdoms: The Tale of Chumon" is a large-scale epic, consisting of 81 episodes. So if you're looking for a historical drama that you can quickly watch in a couple of days, then you might want to keep looking. "The Tale of Chumon" is also not the best choice for those who prefer romantic stories.
But overall, this series is incredibly epic and believable. If you still decide to start it, then stock up on handkerchiefs - there will be a lot of moments that will make you cry. Also in the drama, you will find many exciting and realistic battle scenes. So if you are a true fan of quality historical series, then you simply have no right to pass by.
23. Hwarang (2016)
Cast: Park Hyung Sik, Park Seo Joon, Go Ah Ra, Choi Won Young, Kim Tae Hyun
The drama revolves around young people from Hwarang, the most elite group in the Silla Kingdom. They have all the necessary skills and qualities to protect the palace and the royal family. In general, the plot of the series focuses on the life of the youth of the 6th century, especially their love and friendship.
"Hwarang" is a period drama that generously mixes romance, comedy, action, and some modern elements. Be sure that many funny scenes, as well as pleasant and cute main characters will not let you get bored. However, if you like realistic sageuks with intricate political intrigues, then Hwarang will rather disappoint you. But you should definitely watch this series if you are looking for a drama with a light plot and a happy ending.
24. Scholar Walking at Night (2015)
Cast: Lee Soo Hyuk, Lee Joon Ki, Lee Yu Bi, Shin Chang Min, Kim So Eun
Do you like epic fairy tales? That's how you can call the series "Scientist Walking at Night." It is essentially a mixture of historical drama and fantasy. The plot revolves around a scientist who learns the terrible truth - the royal palace is actually controlled by an evil vampire! The scientist devotes his life to the search for this mysterious creature in order to free the country and people from its influence.
However, such an important task requires the efforts of many people. Therefore, the scientist in his search is joined by a book seller (who actually turns out to be a girl) and the crown prince. In the end, the scientist himself accidentally turns into a vampire, but struggles to maintain his humanity.
If you like fantasy historical dramas, you should definitely check out Scientist Who Walks the Night. Although critics say that the drama has a lot of plot holes, but the great story and amazing cast (which only Lee Joon Gi is worth!) will make you close your eyes to the shortcomings of the series.
