A trip that changed my mind

It all started 8 years ago when my husband and I were visiting friends in Germany. That was the first time I noticed how the Germans deal with garbage.

The device itself, of course, is a curiosity. But I was more impressed that the Germans willingly hand over the container, both old and young. And this is all in the order of things, while many of us are simply ashamed of this and traditionally consider this an occupation of people belonging to a certain social category.

In the same place, in Germany, for the first time I saw separate containers for glass and old clothes on the streets. Moreover, these are several containers for glass of different colors! Above them was a video camera. Friends said that throwing glass into an inappropriate container could result in a hefty fine.

When I got home, I decided to start sorting waste. At that time, in Minsk, all this movement with separate waste collection was just beginning. You can say that I was separating the trash when it was not yet mainstream.

The “sorter” way: from Neanderthals to a bag with lids

After analyzing the contents of my trash can, I realized with horror that up to 80% of waste is packaging. Often incomprehensible, multi-layered, combined. It is she who, for the most part, makes us take out the trash more often. Sorting of waste allowed to significantly increase the interval between emptying the container with general waste.

At the very beginning of my journey, I collected only paper and glass. They could be taken to recycling centers, which I used, but there was a problem with plastic - it was simply not clear what to do with it. It all began with the fact that people carried all their garbage into these same containers. It feels like some kind of bins with signatures in an alien language were lowered to the Neanderthals from space, and they are like: “OK, we will carry our waste bags there.” Every time I dumped my plastic bag into such a container, my heart bled for our people who managed to stay at school for 9- 11 years old, but have not learned to read, and especially - to think. When the containers overflowed, waste bags accumulated around them, being taken away by dogs and birds. But over time, the situation began to slowly improve.

Starting with two containers for glass and waste paper, by 2019 I have “evolved” to seven, adding plastic, iron, aluminum, plastic lids and incinerable garbage to these types of waste. All of them are "camouflaged" in the kitchen and balcony. I adapted to donate a lot for money, caps to charity.

I was advised to collect the so-called household metal by a man who accepts secondary resources. He asked where I put the lids from baby food jars that I bring to donate. It turned out that they can also be collected, like aluminum "washers" from children's canned meat, which I buy in small wholesale lots for my toothless cat. I used to send all this to the general garbage, and then I started a magnet, with which I now check all the metal and collect it separately.

The idea to collect incinerated garbage appeared by itself when my family began to spend weekends in the country. We have a fireplace there. And then one morning, while making tea in a city apartment, I caught myself thinking that now I would throw the bag in the trash, but how could it burn ... And I also started a container for something that could be burned. Used wet wipes, cotton pads and paper towels, paper stained with food or grease, wooden berry containers, bamboo cotton buds and even corn cobs are sent to it.

With plastic caps - a separate issue. There are no places in our neighborhood where you can donate them to charity. But many people know about this topic and participate. At first I collected plastic caps in a separate bag, and then I organized their collection in the kindergarten where I take my daughter. I am not a volunteer, I just wanted to take the caps (including my personal ones) to the collection point when there are enough of them, but the organizers tearfully asked to sort them by markings. And then the initiative overtook the initiator: my balcony was littered with bags with plastic lids. My husband said that someday I would go crazy because of my obsession.

What and where can I rent for money?

Now I rent iron, aluminum, cullet and waste paper for money. Fortunately, there are several recycling points in my neighborhood, and they are all located close to home. Some points also accept PET bottles, but in our family, drinks are not held in high esteem, so there is nothing to collect.

I take out the separated garbage once or twice a month - as it accumulates. Most of all, glass is collected. Recently, we also have to fulfill the plan for secondary resources in kindergarten. So, with the old brake discs taken from the service station after the repair of the car last year, I closed the group's annual norm for metal.

Based on the results of the last month, I have collected:

1.71 kg of iron;

1. 04 kg aluminium;

2.3 kg waste paper;

16.4 kg glass.

At the reception point I got 3 rubles 91 kopecks for all this.

It is clear that you will not get rich by renting secondary resources if you do not do it “professionally”. Still, it’s more like a social topic when there is just a little motivation.

Why am I doing this?

There are at least three reasons. First, I reduce the amount of general garbage, which allows me to take out the bag every three days, instead of every day, as before, and use fewer garbage bags. Secondly, when I take sorted waste to a collection point, I have more confidence that it will reach the recycling site, and not go to a general landfill. Thirdly, this is my contribution to the purity of the planet and the possibility of not being born in the next life as a dung beetle.

After reading this, it may seem to many that my family lives in constant stress, stepping over bags of sorted garbage. This is not true. All containers are securely hidden from view and do not interfere with anyone. And we all got used to separate waste collection very quickly, and now separation occurs automatically - even for a 4-year-old child.

What's the problem?

According to employees of collection points for secondary resources, there are not many people involved in the separate collection of garbage in everyday life and renting it out for money, but they do exist. They transport mainly metal, glass and waste paper. Things are worse with PET bottles: firstly, only colorless ones are accepted; secondly, it is problematic to collect them in sufficient quantity for delivery for processing. The reception point admits that people simply do not want to do this, because PET bottles are cheap, they weigh little, and even when crushed, they remain quite voluminous and take up a lot of space.

If in Minsk things are not bad with the reception of separate waste, then in small towns and especially villages, everything is different. Many Belarusians admit that they would gladly sort the garbage if they had somewhere to put it. That is, people are morally ready to sort waste, but in some settlements there are no conditions at all for separate waste collection - and this is sad.

The second part of the problem is the real recycling of secondary resources. It is obvious (and this is a global problem) that in the modern world, garbage is recycled many times less than it is produced. And here we cannot do without the participation of the state, because private business is unlikely to be interested in this due to the lack of benefits.

Instead of a conclusion

Let me return to the question of what is the connection between the level of income and consciousness? As one teacher of philosophy said: the primary thing in life is a sausage, and philosophy is secondary. This is how a person works, that first he needs to satisfy basic needs, and only then - to think about the high.

Infrastructure and education still decide a lot in the matter of separate waste collection. Both in that, and in another there are advances - it is really visible even on contents of containers for plastic, paper and glass. Now the main thing is that at the state level all this does not turn into populism and profanity.

* Not all plastics can be recycled, but only some of them. At the moment, Belarus recycles plastic labeled 1 (PET, PETE), 2, 4 (HDPE, LDPE, PE), 5 (PP).

For those who want to separate waste correctly, the Center for Environmental Solutions has prepared a special leaflet on what can and cannot be thrown into special containers.

* Many lament the fact that the contents of the containers for separate waste are dumped into one garbage truck, and this makes the whole idea meaningless.

The fact is that the process of selecting what can be recycled is carried out manually where this garbage is brought. But it is much easier to select recyclable from such containers than from general ones. That is why it is important not to contaminate recyclable waste with food and that which can stain carefully cleaned and washed plastic labeled 1, 2, 4 and 5.

Also, mirrors, store receipts made of thermal paper, disposable tableware, combined packaging, and diapers are not recycled.

* Plastic egg trays, thin packaging bags, milk, kefir and sour cream bags fall into the category of non-recyclable materials.

* Plastic bottles should be reduced in volume by squeezing before disposal. This saves space in the container and allows you to take out waste less often, which means less fuel for removal.

* Never throw used batteries into the general waste! Always remember that one AA battery pollutes 20 square meters with heavy metals. m of land.

Belarus has established a collection of used batteries, but the problem of recycling has not been solved. However, this is no reason to dispose of hazardous waste in the traditional way.

* One packing bag, taken by you in the store for free, "lives" for 30 minutes, and decomposes for 300 years.
