A 8 month old baby can eat most things, but sometimes it is confusing how much, when and what - see this helpful 8 month old baby food chart, feeding schedule, feeding tips and more baby food recipes.
If you haven't already, at this age you will most likely be transitioning from purees to more textured foods or even small bite-sized pieces if your baby is starting to get a hang of pincer grasp (but this often develops from 9 months old onwards).

How much should 8 month old be eating?
Between 750 - 900 calories where about 400-500 calories still come from breastmilk/formula.
In the below 8 month baby food chart you will see how much of each food group you should serve.
8 month baby food chart
The 8 month baby food chart shows the recommendations in servings for all the food groups.
At this age, the assumption is that the baby has already tasted a fair share of different foods and is ready to start eating some more complex meals. It is not of crucial importance that the food chart is exactly followed in terms of amounts.
It is however advisable that you can include as much as possible of different food groups within those 2 solid meals per day and in the approximate amounts as mentioned.
The sample menu below is based on the FAO/WHO/UNU Energy Requirements for an average 8-month-old who weighs 19.6 lbs (8.9 kg).
If your baby is bigger or smaller than this that is ok. Every baby is different and this is just an average.
This is not a personalized plan, so please bear this disclaimer in mind.
What to feed 8 month old?
The following foods should be cooked and served appropriately (soft enough to easily mash between the forefinger and thumb).
- Fruits - apples, strawberries, bananas, peaches, nectarines, plums, apricots, blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, mango, pineapples, oranges
- Vegetables - cauliflower, broccoli, spinach, swiss chard, kale, parsnips, carrots, tomatoes, cucumber, zucchini, eggplant, butternut squash, potatoes, sweet potato, asparagus, beetroot, avocado
- Protein - beef, lamb, chicken, turkey, pork, fish, eggs, lentils, chickpeas, beans, tofu
- Grains - oats, millet, wholewheat products (bread, tortillas, pittas, pasta, couscous), quinoa, barley, bulgur, rye products (bread, tortillas, pittas), rice (once a week due to high arsenic content)
- Dairy (pasteurized, no added sugar or salt) - cheese, full-fat yogurt, kefir
- Fats - nut butters, seed butters, olive oil, avocado
Foods to avoid
- Cow’s milk – digestive system not yet adapted
- Low-fat milk and dairy products – cause excessive intake of protein and low intake of essential fats
- Honey – can cause botulism
- Salt – kidneys not sufficiently developed
- Fruit juices – high sugar content
- Unpasteurized products – can contain dangerous bacteria
- Smoked & cured meats / processed food – excessive salt intake
- High mercury fish (shark, fresh tuna, halibut, grouper) – excessive intake of mercury
- Chocolate, especially dark – high caffeine content
How much milk should 8 month old drink?
An eight month old baby should not have any cow's or goat's milk (unless used for cooking) but only breastmilk or formula.
If giving bottled breastmilk then roughly 24 ounces or 720 ml spread between 3-5 feedings per day.
If breastfeeding, continue as you were. The baby knows when they are full and when they need more.
How much formula should an 8 month old drink?
An eight month old baby should have roughly 24 ounces or 720 ml of formula spread between 3-5 feedings per day.
How much water for eight month old baby?
Ideally, you would also give your child ~3-4 oz (90-120 ml) of water during the day in addition to the below food as well.
Note that different kinds of food also contain different amounts of water so that will vary with a different menu.
Try offering 1-2 oz (30-60 ml) per solid meal per day but if they don't drink it all then don't worry.
The priority is to establish healthy eating (and drinking) habits at this stage.

Sample 8 month old feeding schedule
Following the guidelines of the American Academy of Pediatrics, American Dietetic Association and World Health Organization we suggest you introduce solid foods one by one and for at least a day at a time.
That means introducing each of the foods in the meal plan one by one before following the menu below.
Each recipe can be made as a puree, baby-led weaning option or mashed food (if you are transitioning away from purees).
Because of physical differences, growth spurts, or teething, your child may need/want more or less food than what’s proposed. This is completely normal as every child is unique.
The idea is to offer the proposed average amount of food needed and to go from there.
Breakfast
- 8 oz breastmilk or formula
Lunch – Strawberry Oats (click here for recipe)
- 1.5 tablespoon uncooked oats
- 3 tablespoons water to cook the oats
- ½ cup strawberries
Snack
- 8 oz breastmilk or formula
Dinner – Chicken Broccoli Millet (click here for recipe)
- 1. 8 oz chicken, whole, dark and white meat, without skin or bone
- ½ cup broccoli florets
- 1 tablespoon uncooked millet
- 2 tablespoons water to cook millet
- ½ teaspoon olive oil
Before bedtime
- 8 oz breastmilk or formula

Eight month old feeding tips
- offer foods one by one to control for allergies
- start moving from purees to textured/mashed food (or continue with BLW)
- always be present when baby is eating
- avoid salt and sugar
- no honey before 1 year oold
- no cow's milk or goat's milk unless cooking
- don't worry about how much they are eating - breastmilk/formula is still the main source of nutrition and they are exploring new foods
- offer mashed foods on a preloaded spoon (have a few spoons on hand)
- have a great bib to minimize cleaning
- serve food in a suction bowl so baby can scoop food out themselves
- teach them to drink little sips from an open cup from the beginning
- notice when baby is full because they will start turning their head away, clamp lips, throw food on the floor, spit food out, push food away

Effortless Apples and Chicken
Ingredients:
- 1/3 cup boneless chicken or turkey, chopped and cooked
- 1/4 cup soft cooked apple (no skin or seeds), or 1/4 cup natural applesauce
- Handful of diced carrots (optional)
- Pinch of cinnamon (optional)
Directions:
- Place chicken with cooked apple in a food processor or blender.
- Add cinnamon.
- Puree or mash to a consistency suitable for baby, adding water to thin if necessary.
Quick Tip! This recipe freezes with mixed results. It may thaw to a gritty and watery texture. For best results reheat in a saucepan so that ingredients may easily be recombined.

Peachy Keen Sweet Potatoes
Ingredients:
- 1 sweet potato, peeled and diced
- 2 ripe peaches, pitted and cubed
- Water
- Pinch of cinnamon or ginger
Directions:
- Preheat the oven to 375° F
- Combine sweet potato and peaches in a shallow baking dish and add just enough water to slightly cover the food. Sprinkle a pinch of cinnamon or ginger over the dish and stir, cover with foil.
- Bake for approximately 20 minutes or until peaches and sweet potatoes are fork tender—check on the water level often.
- Once fully baked, reserve any remaining water and transfer sweet potatoes and peaches to a bowl to cool.
- Puree or mash as needed for baby’s texture preference.
May be frozen but some wateriness may occur upon thawing—try adding some plain whole milk yogurt to reconstitute.
Quick Tip! You can double, triple or even quadruple this recipe and turn it into a delicious holiday side dish for the grown-ups and bigger kids in the family. Simply mash all the ingredients together, add a ½ cup whole milk yogurt per each doubling of the recipe and then return the mix to a baking dish. Drizzle with maple syrup, sprinkle on some chopped nuts and warm in a heated oven for 15 minutes.

Lentil, Sweet Potato and Apple Salad
Ingredients:
- 3 medium sweet potatoes
- 1 large apple (Macintosh or Granny Smith work well!)
- 2 cups water or broth (low sodium, all natural chicken or vegetable broth) for the lentils
- 1 cup water (to steam sweet potatoes and apples)
- 1 cup yellow lentils (or any dried type of lentils)
- 2 Tbl. olive oil
- 1 tsp. cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp. (or a small pinch) cardamom
Directions:
- Peel the sweet potatoes and cube in 1 inch cubes.
- Peel, core and dice the apple into small dices.
- Bring 2 cups of water or broth to a boil in one saucepot and add the lentils.
- Return the lentils to boil and then turn heat to low.
- Simmer lentils on low heat for 20 to 30 minutes or until the lentils have become soft.
- Add 1 cup of water to the other saucepot and insert a steamer basket into the pot.
- Add the sweet potato cubes and diced apple to the steamer basket and steam for approximately 20 minutes, until the sweet potatoes are fork tender.
- Once the lentils and sweet potatoes and apples are cooked, remove from the stove top and drain excess liquid from each saucepot.
- Allow foods to cool to warm.
- Once foods have cooled, combine the foods together in a large bowl with 2 Tbl. of olive oil.
- Sprinkle in the spices and toss well.
Quick Tip! Mash the salad and serve as a finger food meal or puree for babies who are not enjoying lumps and bumps. Sweet potatoes, apples and lentils are a powerful combination. This salad is great for grown-ups too and will serve up lots of iron, protein and vitamin C as well as vitamin A.

Parsnip, Apple and Carrot Mash
Ingredients:
- 4 parsnips
- 4 carrots
- 2 apples
- Pinch of cinnamon
- 1 Tbl. olive oil
Directions:
- Peel and dice carrots, parsnips and apples then add them to a bowl with olive oil and a pinch of cinnamon, stir to combine.
- Dump the contents of the bowl into a lightly oiled baking dish and bake at 400° F for approximately 25 minutes or until all the foods are fork tender.
- When finished roasting, allow to cool and then puree as needed, adding water to thin if required.
While this dish may be frozen, upon thawing you might find a mushy or gritty texture. For best results, freeze in portions that have not been pureed and then thaw and puree as needed.
Did You Know? Parsnips contain a good amount of calcium, vitamin C and even folate. These root vegetables have a delicious nutty and sweet taste that most babies love.

Sweet Potato Scramble
Ingredients:
- 1/2 cup sweet potato puree
- 2 egg yolks (you may use whole eggs if you wish)
- Butter or olive oil
- Pinch of pepper
Directions:
- Warm the butter or olive oil in the frying pan.
- Combine sweet potato and eggs in a bowl and whisk together.
- Add mixture to the warmed pan and scramble with a wooden spoon until thoroughly cooked.
- Puree or mash as needed to reach baby’s texture preference.
Not recommended for freezing but makes a perfect finger food and can be stored in the fridge for up to three days.
Did You Know? While eggs may have a bad reputation for being high in cholesterol, making eggs a part of baby’s diet will not lead to dangerously high cholesterol levels. Babies need more fats and even some cholesterol for healthy growth and development.

Baked Apples
Ingredients:
- 3 or 4 large apples (Macintosh, Gala or Braeburn all work well.)
- Butter (optional)
- Cinnamon (optional)
- Brown sugar and raisins (optional but a must add if you will be serving to the “big kids”)
Directions:
- Core the apples but leave the peel on.
- Wipe center insides of each apple with butter if desired and/or add a few drops of water-sprinkle some cinnamon over the apples if you like.
- Add raisins and a tiny dash of brown sugar to the inside of each apple if you like.
- Place the prepared apples upright in a baking pan. Add 2 inches of water to the pan and cover with foil.
- Bake at 400° F for approximately 40 minutes or until skin puckers and/or fruit begins to bubble.
- Once apples have baked, allow them to cool in the baking pan then transfer the apples to a large mixing bowl.
Did You Know? Baked apples may fall apart while baking—this is perfectly fine! You may turn them into applesauce or gently mash them for finger foods.

Creamy Peachy Rice
Ingredients:
- 1 cup cooked brown rice
- 1 cup yogurt
- 1/2 cup peach puree
- Pinch of cinnamon
Directions:
- Combine all the ingredients in a medium saucepan.
- Bring ingredients to a gentle simmer and continue to simmer on low until creamy and well blended.
Freezes with mixed results
Quick Tip! This recipe can be used to make any quick and easy rice pudding. Use whole milk to replace the yogurt if desired and try adding raisins and figs.

Yogurt Meals
Ingredients:
- 1 large tub plain, whole milk yogurt
- Assorted fruits and vegetables, pureed or mashed
Directions:
- Combine yogurt with a variety of baby’s favorite fruits or veggies, divide into portions and freeze or store in the refrigerator.
Quick tip! Here are some more yogurt combinations to try:
Peary Creamy Oats: Blend yogurt with pear sauce and cooked oatmeal
Creamy Sweet Potatoes and Rice: Blend yogurt with sweet potatoes and rice—add a pinch of cinnamon if you like.
Green Beans with Yogurt and Applesauce: Blend yogurt with green beans and applesauce.

Easy Pumpkin and Apples
Ingredients:
- 1 cup fresh pumpkin, peeled and diced *
- 2 cups apples, peeled, cored and chopped *
- 1 cup water
- Pinch of cinnamon
Directions:
- Combine all the ingredients in a medium saucepan.
- Bring ingredients to a gentle simmer and continue to simmer on low until soft and fork tender
- Allow to cool then mash or puree if needed.
Freezes with mixed results. It may be watery upon thawing, stir well to reconstitute
Did You Know? Pumpkin and apples will offer an abundance of vitamin A, vitamin C, folate and even calcium into baby’s diet. This combination just can’t be beat and would be great to help boost iron absorption; serve with meats whenever possible.
*You may use natural ready-made applesauce and canned pumpkin if desired; be sure to use plain pumpkin and not pumpkin pie mix.

Sweet Potato Fries
Ingredients:
- 1 pound (approximately 4 medium) sweet potatoes
- Olive oil
- Spices like cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg or cardamom
Directions:
- Preheat oven to 400° F. Scrub sweet potatoes clean then peel them—leave the skin on if you feel baby can tolerate them.
- Cut sweet potatoes into strips or other shapes that you may then cut down after baking.
- In a large bowl, add about 1/4 cup of olive oil and pinches of the spices you prefer.
- Toss the cut up sweet potatoes into the bowl and stir so that the potatoes are drenched with the olive oil mix.
- Dump sweet potatoes onto a baking sheet, drizzle remaining olive oil over the potatoes.
- Stir and swirl the potatoes on the baking sheet before placing in oven.
- Bake for approximately 30 to 45 minutes or until tender.

Recipes for an 8 month old baby ~
A baby at 8 months old is no longer a beginner in complementary foods (read - “Complementary foods for a baby at 8 months”), he has already tried something, something he has yet to try. The menu for a child at 8 months already includes more products than complementary foods for a 5-month-old baby, for example. Here soups and porridges, mashed potatoes and second courses.
So, what can you cook for an 8 month old baby?
Here are some recipes for an 8 month old baby.
Vegetable puree with veal 9Ol000 steamed fish cutlets
Turkey meat mousse
Zucchini and cauliflower puree with herbs
Vegetable puree with veal
- One medium sized potato.
- Veal - about 70g.
- Quarter of an onion for 70 g of veal.
- The same amount of pumpkin.
The meat should simmer on low heat from the moment of boiling for another hour and a half. Cut the vegetables and add to the meat, when everything is ready, send to a blender and puree. Puree for an 8 month old baby is ready.
Meatball soup
Lunch for an 8 month old baby.
You will need:
- turkey fillet approx. 100 g.
- 30 g rice.
- One medium-sized potato,
- 1/4 onion or very small onion,
- 50 g cauliflower.
The turkey must first be minced. Add half-cooked rice to the minced meat and form small meatballs. Throw them into boiling soup water and cook for about 10 minutes. Potatoes, cut into small cubes, along with cabbage, add to the meatballs and cook for another 10 minutes.
This is the way to cook soup for an 8 month old baby!

Pear with cottage cheese
Peel a soft pear, remove the core and put it in a blender, add 50 g of cottage cheese to it. Puree. Ready.

Buckwheat porridge with prunes
Porridge for an 8-month-old baby should be on the menu, because it is an excellent source of the maximum amount of nutrients. So, the recipe for porridge for feeding with pears and prunes.
Ingredients:
- 100 g buckwheat.
- 200 g water.
- 30 g prunes.
- 5 g butter.
Boil the porridge until tender, then chop with a blender, adding prunes and a little oil.

Recipes for an 8-month-old baby: fish puree with vegetables
Ingredients:
- A small piece of hake, about 70 g.
- 50 g cauliflower florets.
- each 30 g carrots and peas.
Cook the fish after boiling for another 10 minutes. Remove the fish from the saucepan and boil the vegetables in the broth. Add peas and / or dill at the very end. To puree, grind everything in a blender.
Dried fruit compote
- 4 dried apricots
- 30 g prunes and raisins.
Throw the fruits into boiling water, then cook for another 5-7 minutes and finally leave the compote to infuse.
Puree soup with chicken and vegetables
Recipes from 8 months of course include vegetables and meat.
- 200 g chicken
- 100 g cauliflower,
- carrots,
- one-third of an onion,
- tablespoon of rice and some dill.
Cut the chicken into small pieces and put in water (can be from the tap, about a liter). Boil and drain the water, then add fresh boiling water and salt. Cook until done. Remove the meat, add rice to the broth and cook for 10 minutes. Add chopped vegetables and cook for another 5 minutes. In the finished soup, return the meat and add the dill. Give soup no more than 150 g per serving.

Rice porridge with berries
- 100 ml. milk,
- 100 ml. water,
- a couple of tablespoons of rice
- 30g. berries.
How to cook porridge for a child at 8 months?
Place milk mixed with water over medium heat. Add cereal, stir until it boils, reduce heat and cook for another 10 minutes. Pour boiling water over the berries and add to the porridge. Make a puree with a blender.
Buckwheat porridge for complementary foods
A baby who eats porridge at 8 months should periodically receive porridge from buckwheat, because it has so many benefits.
- 3 st. spoons of buckwheat,
- glass of water
Pour buckwheat into water, cook over low heat for at least 15 minutes, counting from the moment of boiling. Add some butter.
This is a simple recipe for buckwheat porridge for an 8 month old baby.
Children's steamed fish cutlets
When choosing fish fillets, make sure that there are no bones, even the smallest ones.
You will need:
- a pound of pollock fillet,
- white bread 60 g.
- 70 ml. milk,
- 1 egg
- A couple tablespoons of butter.
