Spawning[]
Main article: Tutorials/Animal farming
Cows spawn above grass blocks in small herds during world generation or individually afterwards. Their spawn rate varies per biome.
In Bedrock Edition, herds of two to three cows spawn on grass blocks at a light level of 9 or higher with at least two blocks of space above, in most grassy biomes except for snowy taigas, snowy plains, meadows, mangrove swamps and wooded badlands.
In Java Edition, herds of four cows spawn on grass blocks at a light level of 7 or higher with at least two blocks of space above, in most grassy biomes except for snowy plains, meadows, mangrove swamps and wooded badlands.
Also, a cow sometimes spawns inside animal pens and butchers' houses in villages.
Shearing a mooshroom turns it into a cow and drops five mushrooms corresponding to the type of mooshroom.
Most cows spawn as adults, but they have a 5% chance of spawning as a calf (baby cow).
Drops[]
An adult cow drops:
- 1 to 3 raw beef (or steak if killed while on fire), with a maximum amount is increased by 1 per level of Looting, for a maximum of 6 with Looting III.
- 0 to 2 leather, with a maximum amount increased by 1 per level of Looting, for a maximum of 5 with Looting III.
- 1–3 experience orbs are dropped when killed by a player or tamed wolf or 1–7 upon a successful breeding.
Killing a calf yields no items nor experience.
Behavior[]
A calf compared to a cow.
A cow moos and huffs occasionally while wandering aimlessly, but tends to stay on well lit and grassy places. A cow also:
- flees and remains 25% faster for a few seconds when harmed.
- looks at players within six blocks for two to four seconds sometimes.
- avoids going to water unless it is following players and always avoid traversing minecart rails and walking off cliffs high enough to cause fall damage.
- avoids environmental hazards, such as cactus, sweet berry bushes, dripstone, fire or lava, but make no attempts to avoid explosions.
An adult cow can be milked by using a bucket on it, yielding a milk bucket.
Breeding[]
Main article: Breeding
A cow follows a player who holds wheat but stops following if separated from the player by at least six blocks.
Adult cows enter love mode and pair off to create calves after they are given wheat, granting the player one to seven experience orbs. The parent cows have a cooldown of five minutes before they can breed again and the growth of calves can be accelerated using wheat; each use reduces the remaining growth duration by 10%.
Baby cows take 20 minutes to grow up and follow adult cows, preferring them instead of a player holding wheat. The calf that results from breeding attempts to go to the nearest available block to its parent, even if no path can be found. A calf pathfinds to other adult cow if it is separated from its parent by more than 24 blocks.

Trivia[]
- Cows are visually based on the Norwegian Red cattle.
- Cows in the PC Gamer Minecraft Demo are branded with a 'PCG' logo on their side.
- Markus Persson stated in a Tumblr post that all "breedable" peaceful mobs displayed traits of both genders and could breed with any other individual of their species.[1] This applies to cows as they have horns and give milk (although there are some cattle breeds wherein females exhibit horns).

- What Do Cows Eat in Minecraft?
Cows, like many other mobs in Minecraft, eat Wheat. When you feed a Cow some Wheat, red hearts will appear above its head. This means that it is in love mode, and can be bred to make baby Cows.
Table Of Contents
How to Get Wheat to Feed Cows
You can find Wheat commonly growing in Villages. If you harvest it, the Villagers won’t mind, as they’ve got tons of Wheat Seeds to plant more. You also have fairly high chances of finding Wheat in Village Chests. As such, be sure to loot Villages thoroughly. You can also find Wheat in the Chests of other locations:
Type of Structure | Possible Amount of Wheat | Appearance Rate |
---|---|---|
Dungeon | 1 to 4 | 34.1% |
Igloo | 2 to 3 | 55.3% |
Pillager Outpost | 3 to 5 | 72.5% |
Shipwreck | 8 to 21 | 42.1% |
Underwater Ruins | 2 to 3 | 81% to 85% |
Woodland Mansion | 1 to 4 | 34.1% |
On top of finding Wheat, you can easily grow it yourself. Just use a Hoe on some Dirt to turn it into Farmland and plant Wheat Seeds in it. If this block is within 4 blocks of some water, it will eventually grow into Wheat if it gets enough sunlight during the day.
Note that in the Bedrock Edition of Minecraft, Wheat Seeds are just called “Seeds.”
What Happens When You Feed Wheat to Cows
When you feed Wheat to an adult Cow, it will enter love mode. If there are 2 adult Cows close to each other, they will breed if they are both in love mode. This will cause the Cows to nuzzle briefly before separating. A few seconds later, a baby Cow will spawn next to one of the parent Cows.
You can also feed Wheat to baby Cows to make them grow faster. Every time you feed a baby Cow 1 Wheat, they will grow 10% closer to adulthood. Normally, it would take a baby Cow 20 real-world minutes to fully grow. However, this time can be drastically reduced by feeding them Wheat. This is also something that is true about feeding many other animal mobs that eat Wheat.
Where to Find Cows
If you’re playing the Java Edition of Minecraft, you can find Cows pretty much anywhere with grass and open space. Specifically, Cows will spawn in all biomes except Snowy Plains, Meadows, and Wooded Badlands. They will only spawn if the light level is above 7 and if there are at least 2 blocks of free space to accommodate their bodies. When these criteria are met, between 1 to 4 Cows can spawn on grassy Dirt blocks. About 5% of Cows will spawn as baby Cows.
In the Bedrock Edition, there are some differences to Cow spawning. While the biome and physical space parameters are the same, Cows will only spawn if the light level is above 9. Furthermore, Cows will only spawn in groups of 2 or 3. However, the chance of Cows spawning as babies remains at 5%.
You can also potentially find Cows in the pens of Villages. If you have a Lead, you can even leash penned Cows and bring them to your farm. Furthermore, if you use a pair of Shears on a Mooshroom, it will turn into a regular Cow.
What Cows Are Good For
There are a couple of resources that you can get from Cows, which makes them a great choice for farming. Firstly, each adult Cow drops 1 to 3 Raw Beef as well as 0 to 2 Leather. Raw Beef can be cooked into Steak, which is one of the best food items in the game. Additionally, Leather is needed to make Books and other important items. To make Bookshelves to enhance your enchanting, you’ll need a ton of Books, therefore a Cow farm could be a great solution.
Alternatively, you can also use empty Buckets on Cows to get Milk Buckets. Milk, when consumed, will remove negative status effects, so having some on hand can be a real life-saver if you get poisoned. On top of that, you can also use Milk Buckets to make a Cake, which is another excellent food item.

As you survive in the open spaces of Minecraft, sooner or later, but each player has to think about where you can get a large amount of skin, milk and beef. And the only way is to start breeding cows. Since in large quantities none of these types of resources from other animals will work. nine0003
A cow in Minecraft or "Cow" is a friendly mob that is a source of several resources at the same time. That is why many players create large farms with cows and breed them. And if you suddenly don’t know how to breed cows in Minecraft, where to find a cow and much more, then we recommend that you familiarize yourself with this material.
Cow in Minecraft
Where do cows spawn and what do they look like?
According to their appearance, cows are divided only into two types - large and small. Adult cows are 1.4 blocks high and 0.9 wideblocks, and the babies are 0.7 blocks high and 0.45 blocks wide. At the same time, cows will spawn in a group. And one group includes from 2 to 3 representatives of this species of animals.
In addition, all cows appear on blocks that consist of turf, and also provided that the lighting level is not lower than 9 units. Moreover, there must be free space above the turf blocks, which in turn must be equal to 2 blocks.
As for biomes, cows can spawn in absolutely any grassy biome. The only exceptions are the snow-covered tundra and the wooded desert plateau. And in the process of generation, cows also appear exclusively on the turf. nine0003
Finally, it is worth knowing that cows can also appear on the territory of village of Minecraft residents inside specially built pens designed for animals. And with a probability of 5%, along with an adult cow, a baby cow, that is, a calf, may appear in the generation process.
Behavior of cows in the game
- Movement . Absolutely every cow will aimlessly and slowly wander near the place of his spawn. However, if the character decides to hit the cow, then the animal will try to quickly run away from the attacker. nine0008
- Water . In fact, cows do not try to get into the water, but from time to time there are individuals that swim in the water. But in general, these isolated cases cannot be attributed to the characteristic behavior of these animals.
- Attitude towards the player . In the event that the character stops next to the animal, then the cow decides to turn its head in its direction for a couple of seconds, and then continue aimlessly walking around the territory. On the other hand, if the character is holding wheat in his hand, then the animal will start following the character. And if you move far enough away from the cow, then the cow will stop, but after a certain amount of time, it will continue to follow again. nine0008
- Breaks . No cow will ever try to jump off a cliff. These animals are always trying to find a bypass, safer way. And the same goes for cacti, lava, and more.
How to tame a cow in Minecraft?
In the usual sense, it is impossible to tame a cow in Minecraft. And this is one of the reasons why it is necessary to build a corral for these animals. Cows always follow the character if he has wheat or a leash in his hands (requires 4 webs and 1 slime to create). And even if you start feeding the cow with wheat, then no taming process will follow. Therefore, their favorite food is usually used in order for them to follow the character straight into the built pen, where they subsequently live. nine0003
How to milk cows?
- In order for the character to be able to milk a cow, you must have an empty bucket with you;
- To create a bucket, you need to get three iron ingots and use a workbench;
- You need to milk a cow with the help of RMB, having a bucket in your hands. In this case, the character will eventually receive a bucket filled with milk;
- Subsequently, cows can be milked an infinite number of times if desired, and the milk itself is useful for the character as an antidote for many negative effects and as one of the ingredients for crafting, for example, a cake. nine0008
How to breed cows in Minecraft?
To raise your own cows, you will need to acquire wheat. It should be understood that calves (calves) are similar in mechanics to other small animals. In this regard, the character will not be able to get leather, raw beef, or even experience from them. In addition, calves have higher types of sounds, move much faster and always follow the adults of their species.
And also of note:
- After the birth of a calf, 20 real minutes must pass (1 day in game time) and only then the animal will grow to an adult representative of its species.
- The growth of absolutely any calf can be accelerated again with the help of harvested wheat, but for this they need to be fed regularly with it;
- After five minutes, a pair of cows that just spawned a calf can be made to breed again and so on indefinitely;
- Please note that standard cows and mushrooms cannot get along to create small babies. nine0008
How to build a corral for cows?
Actually, there is nothing complicated about it. It is enough to use the fence and build a square of any convenient shape. On the other hand, if you do not want the cows to be attacked at night, then you can build a square box with a roof. In general, the building can have any shape and consist of any blocks. The main thing is that the cows cannot get out and are safe. However, if you decide to breed them, then the corral should be large enough. But for dogs in Minecraft , for example, a corral is not needed.
What drops out of cows?
- Skin available . In quantity from 0 to 2 units. However, the amount of leather dropped can be increased by using the Loot enchantment. And for each level of enchantment, the amount increases by 1 unit. As a result, with the “Looting III” enchantment, you can knock out up to 5 units of leather.
- Can get Raw Beef . In the amount of 1-3 units, but if suddenly the cow dies from the fire, then “Roast Beef” will fall out next. With the maximum enchantment "Loot III" you can knock out up to 6 units of raw beef at a time. Each enchantment level increases the amount of falling beef by 1. nine0008
- You can get "Experience" . In the amount of 1-3 units, but this requires the animal to die either from the hand / weapon of the player himself or his tamed animal. And if you managed to successfully breed cows, then 1-7 experience units drop out (nothing can be obtained from a cow cub).
Tips and tricks
- It is much more profitable to breed cows than pigs. This is mainly due to the fact that in addition to meat, cows are also able to give skin. Moreover, cows can be bred much earlier, and their main food (wheat) is much easier to obtain. Finally, cows also give milk. nine0008
- If suddenly there is no adult animal of the same species next to the calf, then it will start to follow the adult representative of mushroom cows. Absolutely the same applies to a baby mushroom cow, which, according to the same logic, will follow an adult ordinary cow.
- Scissors can shear a mushroom cow. As a result, the character will be able to get 5 pieces of red mushrooms, and the mushroom cow itself will then turn into an ordinary representative of cows. You can also cut with scissors and sheep in the game Minecraft .
- Despite the fact that all friendly mobs are bisexual and therefore can breed with anyone, some females also have horns, although they are unique to males. And yet they can also reproduce without any problems.
- Most likely, the cows in Minecraft were created in the image and likeness of the red Norwegian breeds of cows, since their appearance speaks of this.
- Initially, all cows were able to climb higher using ladders. However, they could not go down after that. Their maximum descent is 2 blocks. In addition, during the so-called "PC Game Demo", these animals had a special "PCG" logo on their sides, which hinted at the original demo version of the game. nine0008
You can start breeding cows in Minecraft literally from the start of the game. To do this, it is enough to plant wheat near any place where there is water, and also to build a simple law from any extracted resource. As a result, the character will quickly be able to acquire a stable source of food.

How to breed animals in Minecraft. The Complete Guide
Breeding Animals Helps You Survive in the World of Minecraft
In Minecraft world , you can get a cub just by feeding the animals. Each species has its own "favorite" food, with which you can either lure them or breed animals. Animals will follow you as long as you hold a treat for them, however, they will not react to food thrown or planted in the ground.
Why do you need to breed animals in Minecraft?
If you are playing the map in survival mode, the farm will be an ideal source of food and other resources in the game. Pets aren't the only ones you can feed, you can also feed horses, donkeys, wolves, and even ocelots! nine0003
Here are a few reasons why you might want to start breeding animals:
Meat, milk, leather, and other healthy foods are very valuable.
Animal meat suppresses more hunger points than bread or other crops.
Many materials can be obtained from animals, such as wool, leather, eggs and milk.
Breeding horses can open up the possibility of dyeing clothes in different colors and shades.
Drinking milk can cure poisoning, disease, and reduce hunger. nine0003
Leather can be used to craft armor, books, and item cases.
So how do you breed animals in the world of Minecraft? Feeding animals causes them feelings of sympathy and love, then they will be paired, after which they will have a cub. It should be noted that players must wait at least five minutes to repeat this with the same pair. Breeding animals gives you their trust and experience points in the game. After birth, the cubs will follow their parents for about 20 minutes. Isn't that cute? nine0003
How to breed cows
You can get milk, leather, meat from cows
Cows appear naturally in the vicinity of the map in herds. They are quite valuable animals due to the resources they provide: fresh meat, skin and milk. Players can endlessly milk cows by first feeding them with an empty bucket in their hand, and then clicking on the animal. You can even milk the calves! Meat and leather can only be obtained by killing cows, making breeding more profitable. nine0003
What is required to bring two adult cows together:
- Wheat seeds harvested from tall grass.
- Wheat grown from dark brown seeds.
- Wheat grows faster when the land is supplied with water.
- Bone Meal Fertilizer will help you grow wheat faster.
Pre-harvested from sprouts not yet fully grown yields only seeds
Breeding cows with wheat is the best way, and cooked veal and beef will satisfy your hunger better than bread, biscuits or cake. Players are also given the opportunity to obtain leather by killing cows, an important material for crafting armor, books, and bookshelves. Breeding these animals is a very important and useful element in the game in survival mode. nine0003
How to breed sheep
Sheep are valued for their wool, which is used to make not only beds
Sheep are animals that also appear on the world map, like cows. While most sheep are white, they can also be grey, black or light pink. They are prized for their wool, which can be used to make decorative items and beds. Wool can be obtained using threads obtained from spiders killed at night, however this is a more time consuming process, as it requires finding special caves with monsters and spending energy on hunting. Like cows, sheep need wheat for food. nine0003
Players need scissors to get wool. By clicking on a sheep, you can get from one to three blocks of wool. Did you know that they need grass to regrow their fur? To do this, sheep need an area with vegetation to live in. Wool can also be dyed in different colors, in turn, this gives a good opportunity to obtain decorative items of any shade!
How to breed pigs
Pigs are not only meat, but also a means of transportation! nine0003
Pigs are passive creatures that spawn naturally and can be used to transport or obtain food. They are most often found in groups, but can also be seen in the water. With the help of a saddle and a special fishing rod with a carrot on the hook - a delicacy for pigs, you can ride them. This type of transport for moving over long distances is almost as good as a horse.
Where can you find carrots?
- Carrots can be found on rural farms or very rarely after killing zombies. nine0008
- When harvesting carrots, you can get from one to four.
- Bonemeal fertilizer accelerates crop yields.
- Golden Carrot can be used to make Night Vision Potion.
Roast pork is great for satisfying hunger, although not as much as beef. If you prefer pigs as a mode of transportation, be careful, because during a thunderstorm, if they are struck by lightning, they will turn into zombie pigs, and they can be very dangerous!
How to breed chickens and ducks
Chickens and ducks are useful for their eggs, feathers, and meat
Chickens or ducks also appear spontaneously and are very revered for their meat, feathers and eggs. Birds can be found on illuminated areas of the map, roaming spontaneously or in groups. When falling from a great height, they land safely on their wings. Hens lay eggs regularly for about eight minutes, which are used in various recipes or, on rare occasions, to produce a chick when an egg is broken. Birds are fed with wheat seeds, pumpkin seeds or watermelon seeds. nine0003
- Harvesting wheat yields seeds.
- If you break a pumpkin, you can also get seeds as a result.
- When using the machine along with a pumpkin, you are also given seeds.
- Any seed is suitable for hens.
Chickens are a good source of eggs, but they disappear after five minutes, so you need to collect them quickly, for this you can place a farm under the chest, so the eggs will be collected automatically. Feathers are also an equally important material that is used to make arrows, and cooked chicken meat will save you from feeling hungry! nine0003
How to breed horses and donkeys
Horses and donkeys are wonderful carriers, you just need to try to tame them. Their coloration is usually similar to that of other horses in their territory, but there may be differences. Like donkeys, they spawn spontaneously on the map and are passive creatures. Mules can be obtained by crossing a horse and a donkey. Both animals are a good means of transportation, however the donkey is very stubborn if not fed, and the horse will kick you off until it is tamed by feeding it golden apples or golden carrots and not equipping it with a saddle. nine0003
- By combining gold and an apple or carrot, you can get a golden apple/carrot.
- Gold bars can drop zombie pigs in the wasteland.
- Gold can be obtained from mines.
- Apples are harvested by breaking branches of apple trees.
To ride long distances in a short time, players use a horse as a vehicle. By clicking on the horse with an empty hand, you will saddle it, but do not forget that you must first tame it. The saddle can either be crafted, or haggled with the villagers, or found in chests in the wasteland. Tamed mules can even be used to transport cargo over long distances. nine0003
How to breed wolves
Before breeding wolves, they need to be "domesticated", and in the future they will protect their owner and territory!
Wolves move in packs of one to eight, appearing only in forests. A wild wolf can harm the player, but if you hit one, you can attract the whole pack. You can tame a wolf by feeding him a bone, he has a collar that is initially red, but it can be changed and painted in a different one. Only domesticated wolves can produce puppies when crossed, for this they need meat of any kind or rotting flesh. nine0003
- The meat must be raw.
- Puppies are born with low health, so they need to be fed right away.
- Rotten flesh does not harm wolves or cubs.
- Puppies can drown if they follow you in the water.
- The wolf's health can be seen at the level of its tail.
Tamed wolves can be made to sit by right-clicking on them, so they won't follow their master and run away. Also, the wolf must be fed so that his health is normal, and in the event of an attack by enemy creatures, he was able to fight them off and help the owner. The wolf will protect the player from everything that is dangerous for him, even from other players! nine0003
How to breed Ocelots
Ocelots are able to drive away creepers from their homes, which makes them not just cute cats, but also useful different breeds. These animals are very shy and will run away from the player if he runs at him. Ocelots can be tamed with raw fish and they will love their owner.
- Fish can be caught with a fishing rod and a pond. nine0008
- Kittens are the same color as the first parent.
- Kittens will drown if they follow their owner in the water.
- Cubs are born domestically.
Cats can be taught commands in the same way as dogs, although they can eat chicken in the area if they find one. Tamed ocelots will teleport to the owner, and if they fall, they will not be harmed, landing safely.
