IBM and Mars have decided to create a joint food safety testing system. It is known that every year due to contaminated, contaminated and poor-quality water or drinking in the United States, one out of every six residents falls ill, 3,000 people die, and another 128,000 end up in hospitals. All this costs the American healthcare system $9.billion annually.

True, the PulseNet system operated by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention operates in the country, but it is mainly concerned with finding traces of pathogenic bacteria in food. Unfortunately, it's not just bacteria in food - one famous case is the deliberate addition of melamine to milk in China (an additive that artificially increases its fat content), which led to the death of children who ate infant formula from such milk. In other words, it is necessary not to look for known bacteria, but to compare food products with “reference” samples prepared in advance. This is exactly what IBM and Mars plan to do.

For this, it is planned to use the method of DNA and RNA sequencing. In other words, this process will compare the genetic information of a "reference" and safe food with the samples being analyzed. Significant differences will be an occasion to take a closer look at such food.

Researchers hope this will help improve global food safety not only in the US but around the world. We turned to Anastasia Savilova for a comment , specialist in molecular biology, candidate of biological sciences, senior researcher at the Institute of Immunology of the Federal Medical and Biological Agency of Russia.

“Such a system, in my opinion, will rarely be useful, but it is very suitable for reassuring the townsfolk, which, in turn, can bring good profits to the organizers of the project. In addition, this method is easy to determine the content of GMOs in food. Let me remind you that such studies are also being carried out in Russia: in particular, the Moscow company DNA-Technology has developed and put into practice DNA analyzes of products for GMOs.”
