Baby Food and Feeding - Huggies AU
Baby feeding and foods
One of the most important things you can give your baby is a balanced, healthy diet. For the first few months, baby feeding is pretty straightforward because your little darling drinks her food, rather than eats it. But around 4 to 6 months of age, the next significant step in baby feeding takes place: eating solids. For first-time parents, this can be a big deal, as you probably don’t have a clue about what to feed your little one. Also, you may be worried about hygiene and all those food allergies that seem to be about these days.
At Huggies, baby care is our speciality, which is why we’ve put together a whole range of information, baby food recipes and tips from real mums to get you started.
Starting to feed baby
Preparing food for bub can be an enjoyable task once you’ve gotten the hang of it and you’ll get a real kick out of watching your baby experience their first mouthfuls of squished banana or stewed apple. Make sure you have the camera ready to capture the funny looks on his or her face – the expressions could range from astonishment to disgust to indignant to sheer delight!
As a general guideline, make sure they’re getting a variety of nutrient-rich, unprocessed foods such as fruit, vegetables and red and white meat. If your baby is vegetarian ensure that you check with your doctor that they’re getting enough nutrients. For more information, visit our page on baby nutrition.
How to tell when baby is ready for solid foods
If you’re wondering when to start your baby on solids, it’s usually between the ages of 4 to 6 months. At around 6 months, breast milk or formula can no longer provide all the nutrients that bub needs. Avoid waiting much longer than this to ensure that your baby is getting everything that they need.
You may even notice that your baby is starting to take more of an interest in what you’re eating and attempting to put different foods in their mouth. This is also a good sign that they are ready to start eating grown up food!
When starting on solid foods make sure that it’s blended into a fine puree. Introduce a number of foods, one at a time, and then rotate them throughout the week to create more variety and balance in bub’s diet. It is recommended to introduce new foods every 3-5 days so that any allergic reaction can be pinpointed to a specific food. Because eating is a new experience, baby’s first solids need to be smooth and moist so they’re easy to swallow, yet interesting and tasty so they are eager for more. Visit our food suggestions for babies starting on solids and early nutrition pages for more information.
Food allergies in babies
Food allergies are becoming more and more common all over the world and it’s important that you get bub to a doctor if you suspect that they may be allergic to something you’re feeding them. Some of the most common allergies and intolerances include:
- Lactose intolerance
- Peanut allergy
- Wheat/gluten intolerance
- Milk allergy
- Egg allergy
- Soy allergy
- Shellfish allergy
Always keep an eye on whether your baby experiences any abnormal reactions to these foods when you’re first introducing them. Allergic reactions usually occur soon after eating the allergen. If the child experiences a severe reaction (trouble breathing/wheezing, severe vomiting) urgent medical attention is required.
Herbs for you and baby
Using a variety of herbs in your healthy family meals is a wonderful way of nourishing the body and soul. Babies can be given herbs via mum’s breastmilk, and there are dozens of other methods of applying herbs including ointments, creams, compresses, poultices, liniments and oils. Find out what herbs are suitable for you and baby.
Nutrition for breastfeeding mums
As you’re breastfeeding and gradually weaning bub, don’t forget about your own nutrition! Continue eating plenty of fruits, veggies, red and white meat, seafood, nuts and seeds to keep your energy and nutrition levels up. For more information visit our page on breastfeeding nutrition.

Healthy Recipes for Babies and Toddlers
If you want to make your own baby food purees at home, you just need a few simple ingredients.
The Comfort of Cooking suggests steaming or roasting and then pureeing your veggies. she likes to start with sweet potato, apple, carrot, beet, and pear, among others. You can add in baby-friendly seasonings like olive oil, garlic powder and onion powder.
If you are going the baby-led weaning route, you would give your child cooked veggies (and some fruits that can be choking hazards, like apples) to begin with, cut into long finger-like strips for them to hold.
At this stage, if you are doing purees or baby-led weaning, it’s best to stick to single-ingredient items as you introduce potential allergens to your baby
At 6- to 8-months, you will introduce more complex combinations to your baby. You’ll want to feed them nutritious items, as your baby is probably rolling and even crawling by 6- to 8-months. Active babies need lots of nutrients! Here are a few recipes to try.
Yummy Toddler Food has a large list of exciting combinations of purees that your baby can try, such as:
Apple + spinach
Apple + butternut squash
Banana + plain whole milk yogurt
Banana + oatmeal
Blueberry + avocado
Blueberry + peach
Carrot + quinoa
Carrot + bean
Mango + plain whole milk yogurt
Mango + avocado
Pear + peas
Pear + banana
If you have chosen to do baby-led weaning, you can continue offering your baby whole foods, cut into the appropriate size. Don’t forget to include iron-rich foods, which offer lots of nutrients, like sardines, red meat, dark meat poultry and more.
As your child gets more accustomed to eating—and hopefully things get less messy—you can try introducing even more foods, especially those with texture. Your baby might have a few teeth by now that they’re looking to put to good use. If you’ve been doing purees, try adding rice, oats or quinoa to your purees. If your baby is ready to eat a combination of foods, try these recipes.
Baby apple banana oat muffins: Sally’s Baking Addiction’s baby apple banana oat muffins are a good introductory muffin recipe. It does not have refined sugar and uses banana, unsweetened applesauce, and coconut sugar to sweeten it. It also uses heart-healthy oats instead of refined white flour.
Breakfast egg cups from Baby Foode are a great way to get protein into your baby’s stomach if you’ve already passed the egg allergy introduction stage. Once you know it’s safe for your baby to have eggs, you can put anything you like into an egg cup, such as veggies, meat and cheese. With meats and cheeses, try to avoid highly processed meats or cheeses that could have a lot of saturated fat or sodium, which is not good for your baby.
Parmesan roasted cauliflower: My Kids Lick The Bowl’s parmesan roasted cauliflower is a great way to get veggies into your baby. Roasting helps add flavor, as does a sprinkling of parmesan cheese.
Secret veggie pasta sauce: A veggie pasta sauce like this one from Healthy Little Foodies is a great supplement to pasta—extra points if you are feeding your child a high-protein, high-fiber pasta made from lentils or chickpeas.
Carrot fries: You can do this with just about any veggie that can be cut into sticks, but try baking or air frying veggies like Plant-Based Juniors suggests so that your child can experience the texture of the vegetables.
Pancakes, nuggets, fritters and fingers of any kind are easy ways for your child to grip their food and self-feed.
By age one, your baby should be eating three solid meals a day as their intake of formula or breastmilk decreases. They should be getting most of their calories from solid food, and eating a variety of foods like adults do. While toddlers can be notoriously picky eaters, these recipes can make food fun and delicious.
https://littlesproutslearning.co/healthy-pancake-recipe-for-kids/: This recipe from Little Sprouts Learning includes whole wheat flour instead of refined white flour and maple syrup or honey instead of sugar. (Children under one should not have honey, due to the risk of botulism.) Top with fresh fruit.
Taco cups: These taco cups by Plant-Based Juniors are cute and will be a hit with your kid. Plus, they are packed with vegetables. Toddlers love any sort of “fun” or portable food. They suggest using nutritional yeast, but you can use a full-fat, low sodium cheese like mozzarella if you wish.
https://www.theleangreenbean.com/gluten-free-pumpkin-yogurt-bars/ Full-fat yogurt is a great protein source for your toddler. These pumpkin yogurt bars are perfect for breakfast or a snack, and have eggs, nut butter and oat flour as a healthy base instead of refined sugar and refined flour.
https://mamaknowsnutrition.com/simple-mac-and-cheese-recipe-without-flour-kid-friendly/: This recipe from Mama Knows Nutrition uses whole-grain pasta and reduces the amount of cheese used by adding butternut squash or pumpkin.
Spinach grilled cheese: This recipe is from Healthychildren.org, a website by the American Academy of Pediatrics. It calls for whole-grain bread, spinach, and flavorful cheddar cheese.
Baked quinoa chicken nuggets: PureWow nails it with this toddler-friendly recipe for chicken nuggets. They’re crunchy, handheld, and healthy thanks to quinoa instead of traditional breading.
Sweet potato frittata fritters: This recipe from Annabel Karmel will please your toddler, as well as help them get good nutrients from veggies, eggs, and herbs.
