Mango Baby Puree

While most people associate the tropical mango with the warmer months 🌞, mango baby food is a perfect treat for babies during fall and winter ❄️ because of the mango’s immune-boosting blend of vitamins and minerals 💪.

To make this puree super-duper creamy, we are going to add a ripe banana. This also mellows out the citrus taste of mango and makes it one of the yummiest combos out there (plus a darn good base for a rummy cocktail. 🍹). Combine the soft texture of both ripe fruits, and you’ll get a creamy, appetizing puree. As if that’s not enough, here’s a bonus: This recipe is one of the easiest soft baby foods to make by hand.

That being said, don’t feel obligated to add anything — mango puree is already perfectly healthy and tasty as is 😋.

Is it your first time making homemade baby food? If you answered yes, then I suggest you start this journey by reading my in-depth Guide on How to Make Homemade Baby Food. The detailed article goes over all the essential information such as the best cooking tools to have on hand, safe storage, knowing when your baby is ready for solids, introducing purees, making the best first foods for baby, and more! Reasons to Love Mango Baby Puree
  • quick and easy to make — less than 5 minutes
  • 3-ingredient recipe
  • full of nutrients for a growing baby
  • sweet and flavorful
  • baby food for 4-6 months and up — stage 1 baby food
  • complements your favorite baby cereal
  • freezer-friendly

Ingredients
  • Mango: You can use fresh mango if they are available (they need to be ripe and soft to the touch), but thawed frozen mangoes work just as well and are way easier to deal with.
  • Banana: Obviously, the riper the banana, the easier it is to mash, but don’t go too brown. A few spots will give you the best flavor and texture to make this recipe a special treat. You can leave bananas out for your first mango puree, but I have found that they give the mangos a creamier and smoother consistency.
  • Nutmeg: This warm, mild spice is ideal for flavoring both sweet and savory dishes for your baby. Plus, nutmeg is known to aid in digestion.

HEALTH BENEFITS OF MANGOS

Mangos are a good source of fiber and vitamin B6, and are high in vitamins A and C. They also contain potassium, magnesium, and copper, which have anti-inflammatory properties that help boost immunity! 💪 And fear not — if you’re worried the mango may be too tart for your baby, it actually has far less acid than most fruits, so it will be gentle on sweet little baby tummies.

Read more about mango’s awesome superpowers here.

Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. Prep: Dice the mangos, or use thawed, frozen mango chunks.
  2. Blend: Place mangoes and any other add-ons (banana or another fruit and seasoning) in the blender, and puree for 1 minute.
  3. Add Water: Add water as needed to thin out your mixture. I did not have to add water to my puree.
  4. Eat: Serve and enjoy!

Mango Baby Food Combinations

Mango Puree can be enjoyed as is for a starter puree or mixed with a ton of different other pureed fruits and veggies to make delicious combination purees. Give these fun combos a try!

  • apple
  • pear
  • sweet potato
  • carrot
  • yogurt
  • oatmeal baby cereal

ADDING SPICES

In this recipe, we are adding a pinch of nutmeg, but feel free to use the following spices:

  • cinnamon
  • cloves
  • ginger
  • mild curry powder
  • mint
  • cardamom
  • basil
  • vanilla extract

Tip on Spices: I always add spices or herbs to my baby food purees, but you can choose to leave them out. You do you! Either way, this puree will surely turn out scrumptious.

Tips for a perfect mango puree
  • If You’re Using Frozen Mangoes: Thaw the mango in a mesh sieve over a bowl or your sink to allow water to run off. You can always add more water if the puree is too thick.
  • If You’re Using Fresh Mangos: If you are using fresh mangos, make sure they’re soft and ripe.

HOW TO STORE MANGO BABY FOOD
REFRIGERATOR

You can store this puree in an airtight container in the fridge for 3-4 days.

FREEZER

This puree can be frozen for up to 4 months.

  • Spoon puree into a freezer storage container (this is my favorite freezer storage container). Do not overfill.
  • Place the lid on the storage container or cover with a piece of saran wrap — label with the date and recipe name.
  • Place the tray into the freezer and let it freeze completely — preferably overnight.
  • Pop-out the baby food cubes and place them in a zip-lock baggie or stasher bag. Don’t forget to relabel the baggie or stager bag for future reference.

WHEN CAN BABY EAT MANGOS?

Babies can have mangos as one of their first foods. When a baby can start on solids is determined by their own rate of development, which generally comes between 4-6 months of age. Some of the developmental milestones babies need to reach in order to start solids include: if your baby has solid control of their head and neck, if your baby has doubled in weight, and if your baby is reaching for or opening their mouth when you eat (see my guide here). Before you start baby on purees, you should consult with your pediatrician to make sure your child is developmentally ready.

Ingredients

Mango (obviously): when purchasing make sure that the mango is a little soft to the touch and free of any signs of deterioration. You don't want it to be squishy or have any dark spots or cracks.

How to store mango?

If it's not fully ripe, leave it at room temperature for up to 7 days until ripe.

When ripe, move to the refrigerator for about 5 days.

Mango Puree for Baby Benefits

Mango is a fruit that's really rich in vitamin C. But what most people maybe don't know is that it's also a great source of beta-carotene which is a precursor of vitamin A.

Another important thing for babies when they start solids is dietary fiber. This is because their little digestive systems might not be developed fully yet and the introduction of solids can lead to constipation.

So this is where food high in dietary fiber comes handy. And mangoes are just that.

They also contain a fair amount of B vitamins as well as minerals such as copper.

How To Make Mango Puree for Baby - 2 ways

Mango is one of those fruits that doesn't require any cooking before serving. Not even for a 6 month old's mango baby puree. Yessss!!!!!

There are two ways of making it though - from fresh mangoes and from frozen.

How to make frozen mango puree?

  1. Thaw the frozen mango three ways - either overnight in the fridge; place the sealed bag of mango in a bowl of cold water for about half an hour; or just pop it in a blender about 2 hours before you want to blend and let it thaw.
  2. Blend. Place the mango in the blender or food processor and blend until smooth. It may require a bit of water so you can add little by little making sure that it is not too runny.
  3. Serve or store for later use.

How to make mango puree from fresh mangoes?

  1. Cut the mango. Peel the mango and then cut around the seed. For the mango baby puree you don't really need to cut it further if you will be using a blender.
  2. Blend. Now that you’ve prepared your mango, just throw it in the blender. And blend until smooth. You can add a tablespoon of water to make it smoother but you will most likely not need it.
  3. Serve or store for later use.

Tips
  • There are certain blenders that were created just for baby food but we have always used either the inexpensive magic bullet, the Vitamix or a food processor for both our baby foods and every day for our (adult) smoothies.
  • Serving size is just for guidance, but if your baby needs more or less food please follow their cues.

How to serve?

Have two spoons, one where you preload the puree and put it on baby's tray so they can play and explore and the other that you can use to feed the baby.

If you are feeding the baby then make sure to follow their cues, place the spoon in front of their mouth and patiently wait for them to open. That way they baby feels in control of what and how much they are eating and can become confident in parent/child communication.

A great option is to offer them both a puree option and baby-led weaning. That way you know they are getting some food, while they are still able to fully explore the fruit they are eating. For more info on how to offer mango baby-led weaning see under "Possible variations" below.

How to store mango puree?

  • Store in an airtight container in the fridge for 3 days
  • Freeze in an ice cube tray or small airtight containers up to 3 months
  • To thaw, remove from the ice cube tray and place in a airtight container in the fridge overnight

Possible Variations

Mango doesn't necessarily need to be served as a baby puree. See some variations below.

Mashed. If you’re over the puree stage, transitioning from purees to finger food or simply want to start with mashed rather than smooth baby purees then this recipe is perfect if you modify the “how-to” part. Instead of putting in the blender, you can simply mash the food up together by pressing down on the mango with a fork.

You’d probably want your mango to be a fully ripe here so that it’s easier to mash.

MASHED

Lumps. If you’re just a step away from finger food, you can also blend or mash one half of the mango and the leave the rest in pieces and then mix. That way your child will get used to new textures.

Mango Baby-led weaning. You'd also want your mango to be fully ripe here so that it's easy for your baby to chew on and avoid choking. Peel the mango and then cut into very thin slices.

You can read more about how to transition to finger foods here.

Mango Baby Food Combinations

Mango goes well with lots of different fruits. You can try pineapple, banana, sweet potato, peaches, nectaries, apricots, olive oil, cinnamon, nutmeg.

Mango Puree.

Where could I buy?

Mango puree is made from the most popular fruit in the world, which has the title of "king" for a reason. Ripe and fragrant pulp, combined with a large amount of nutrients and low calorie content, make mango puree an indispensable product in the diet.

  • An exotic fruit from India is no longer a curiosity in our country. However, it is difficult to find the most ripe fruits on sale. If you eat unripe mangoes, be careful not to abuse this royal fruit, otherwise you can harm your body. To prevent this from happening, limit yourself to one or two fruits.
  • The popularity of mango puree is due to the fact that the fruit contains an unrealistically large amount of vitamins and microelements. Ripe fruits contain vitamins A, groups B, C, E, K. Minerals - phosphorus, calcium, iron and others.
  • Despite its exotic nature, mango puree is recommended for babies from 8 months. It will help the baby improve bowel function. You can eat mango puree for colds, inflammation of the oral cavity.
  • The benefits of mango puree are great. Moderate consumption can improve visual acuity, strengthen immunity, and improve bowel function. The high content of fiber contributes to the excellent removal of toxic substances from the body. By eating mango puree, you will be less susceptible to infectious diseases.
  • Given that the process of preparing mango puree at home is somewhat more complicated than that of berries, it is recommended to freeze the puree and store it in the freezer. To do this, the finished puree is placed in cells for making ice and frozen. After that, a frozen piece of puree is carefully removed from each section and transferred to a special bag, on which the name, namely “mango puree”, and the date of preparation should be written.

how to use

Mango puree, like any fruit puree, is used as a filler for yoghurts, curds, ice cream. Mango can be the only or one of several ingredients in a freshly made smoothie. Mango puree can be used as a bun filling.

how to do

To make mango puree, the fruit must first be prepared. Cut off the peel, wash. If you see dark spots, they also need to be removed. Then you have to cut off all the pulp from the fruit. If the fruit is not ripe, then this will not be so easy. After that, the cut mango slices should be chopped with a knife into small pieces. Their size will determine the mashing time, so try to cut them as small as possible.

Next, prepare a pot in which you will steam the mango pieces. Well, if the house has a double boiler. Pour water into the pan, literally one glass. Place the mango slices on top, spreading evenly over the entire surface. Don't forget to cover.

Bring the water to a boil first, then simmer the mango slices for about 5-6 minutes over low heat. The readiness of the fruit is checked with a fork. Without much effort, the pieces should turn into a puree.

A food processor can be used to make mango puree quickly. Add a few tablespoons of water from the saucepan to get the puree to the right consistency.

Another way to make mango puree at home is to bake the mango in the oven or microwave. After that, it must be cleaned, cut into small pieces and chopped with a blender or fork.
