Alice, mum to adorable baby Fern, and her husband regularly post videos about their lives and approach to a vegan, holistic lifestyle with children.

In the short video, Alice looks into the camera lip syncing the popular song from the TV show Adventure Time, I'm just your problem.

As her child sits in their highchair, sporting an adorable deer-ear hat, she begins to take small bites of an apple and spits them onto the high chair table.

Baby Fern eats the pieces of apple up with no hesitation.

The comment section of the video was completely divided on whether Alice's feeding technique was disgusting or totally normal.

Some users couldn't believe what Alice had done and were stunned she even put the video online.

One user wrote: "There are some things we do in our lives that shouldn't be shared with the world. This is one of those things."

Another person commented: "Why can't you just cut it? With a knife?"

A third said: "You're transferring the bacteria on your mouth (which is cavity-causing bacteria because you're older) into the baby's. Makes them more prone to cavities."

However, lots of mums were quick to defend Alice and loads of mums commented on how they do the same thing when their children are babies.

One user said: "Easier than cutting it, at least that's why I do it."

A second user replied: "Wait... All moms don't do this?? Lol."

Another popular comment said: "All of y'all acting like this is new and confusing... My parents did this and I'm pretty sure MOST do as well."

'Clueless' Star Alicia Silverstone Fed Her Son Like Birds By Pre-chewing His Food

There’s no one right way to be a parent. Kids need love, and aside from that, there are many ways to successfully raise a child. Some parents prefer to helicopter, others follow the attachment parenting guide. And then there’s whatever Alicia Silverstone does.

The Clueless star has one child, a son named Bear Blu. Little Bear was born in 2011, and today is 8 years old. Bear and Silverstone are very close. Although she may not do it anymore, she had an unusual way of feeding Bear when he was a little cub.

In 2012, Silverstone revealed she pre-chews Bear’s food like a bird. She posted a video of herself sitting on a couch with Bear, holding a bowl of soup. She then takes a bite of food and chews it, before spitting it back out into Bear’s mouth.

The process is apparently called ‘pre-mastication,’ according to an NBC News health expert. Silverstone posted the video on her own lifestyle blog, which is dedicated to health food.

On her blog, TheKindLife.com, Silverstone wrote that the ritual is very special. Both she and Bear enjoy it. She wrote: “I fed Bear the mochi and a tiny bit of veggies from the soup…from my mouth to his. It’s his favorite…and mine.”

The video sparked controversy and disgust in some, but there were others genuinely wondering if this is a good way to feed a child.

Feeding mouth-to-mouth is normal in some cultures

One blogger interviewed about the incident pointed out that this practice is likely age-old. Parents today were grossed out, but they may not be thinking about the course of human history.

Today, parents usually buy their baby food in the supermarket. It comes liquefied already. More intrepid moms and dads may cook their own vegetables and blend them at home. But both of those processes involve modern technology and industry that wasn’t always available and isn’t available in all parts of the world.

In remote areas, parents don’t have access to store bought baby food, or to industrial appliances for puréeing food. So sometimes chewing it manually first is the safest and most effective way to feed a baby.

It’s still common in many parts of the world, even in the United States. Moms in East and South Asia still premasticate for their babies today, although that may be in part out of necessity. In the US, 1 in 7 caregivers says they’ve done it before. So while Silverstone’s video may seem weird and stomach-churning, moms everywhere do the same thing.

Feeding babies like Alicia Silverstone may have some health benefits

There are health negatives to premastication, according to the CDC. It may be a factor in the spread of HIV from a HIV+ mother to her HIV- child. It could also transfer bacteria that could lead to tooth decay, or other illnesses like strep throat. But there may be positives too.

Just like bacteria in breast milk may boost a baby’s immune system, some scientists theorize that bacteria in premasticated food could do the same. Other scientists think that’s unlikely. Still, others think that it could depend entirely on the food being given to the child.

Premasticating processed food, for example, probably is not protective. Although Silverstone’s video seems gross, it is important to understand that people have been pre-chewing food for centuries.

The first recorded mention of it is in 1025 A.D. No matter how a parent chooses to feed a child, mom-shaming is never okay. In the 1940s and 1950s, breastfeeding was often shamed. Now it’s recognized as a fine way to feed a baby. Maybe Silverstone is just ahead of her time.

How to hint to birds that it's time to start a family

Who said that a pet parrot must necessarily repeat words and phrases after us? After all, not everyone, you see, is given to be talkative. Who knows, perhaps the calling of your feathered "silent" is completely different. Perhaps his life purpose is to be a gallant gentleman, an exemplary husband, a caring father. Believe me, watching the life of a couple of budgerigars in love and the appearance of chicks is no less exciting than teaching a bird to speak.

How to woo birds

To get the perfect couple, you can choose one of two options: either plant a new parrot to the wavy you already have, or buy two birds at once.

Since it is not recommended to "marry" the closest blood relatives (the offspring may be born unviable or weak), it is better to buy a male and a female from different breeders. As a last resort - in the same one, but on the condition that the birds are guaranteed not to be close in blood. It is desirable that the parents of the future bride and groom have a reputation for caring fathers and mothers, because these traits are usually passed on to chicks.

Recall that a male can be distinguished from a female by the color of the supraclavicular cere. In a boy it is bluish, and in a girl it is beige-brown (with the exception of albino birds, in which it is difficult to determine the sex by the beak). The cere acquires a permanent color by about three months of age.

You should not immediately, on the move, launch an unfamiliar male and female into one cage. You need to give them at least a week to adapt and wait for the birds to get used to each other. Place the wavy in different cages, but in the same room - so that they can see and hear each other well. On the one hand, in this way you will observe quarantine (especially if you select a partner for a parrot you already have). On the other hand, you will have the opportunity to watch a couple and see if the birds get along together. If a boy and a girl react kindly to each other (do not worry, do not scream, etc.), show mutual interest and show a desire to communicate with their whole appearance, you can put them in one cage for a while.

Since females are more likely than males to show aggression towards new neighbors, it is better to place a girl in a cage with a boy, and not vice versa. On his territory, the gentleman will feel more confident even with the unfriendly behavior of the lady. For the same reason, it is desirable that the male be older than the female (and therefore stronger and more experienced), in extreme cases - the same age.

If you see that the birds in the cage began to fight, rush about furiously, or if at least one of them is experiencing obvious discomfort, put them away from each other for a while. Try again to bring the parrots in a day or two. If they still fail to make friends, it means that it is better to find another partner for the bride or groom.

Obvious signs of mutual sympathy: the birds are calm, constantly sitting side by side, having mercy, cooing, cleaning each other's feathers.

As you know, in nature, old people will not give birth to children, and parrots are no exception. The couple should be young and full of energy. However, it is also unreasonable to wait for offspring from very young birds: before starting a family, the wavy must become adults and get stronger, otherwise the offspring will be born weak, and such a wedding will not bring health to the parents themselves. The most favorable and prolific age for parrots is 2-3 years.

Preparing for the wedding

At the time of mating, the birds should be healthy, not exhausted and calm. The diet of the male and female should be diversified as much as possible, not forgetting the necessary vitamins. The cage must be chosen very spacious (ideally, an aviary).

In order for the expectant mother to be able to lay eggs, the birds must have a house. You can buy it at a pet store or make it yourself (make a small nesting box like a birdhouse with a removable top out of plywood). At the bottom of the house, covered with sawdust, they usually make a small depression to make it more convenient for the female to lay eggs. But even if there is no deepening, the expectant mother will make it herself. The cage should be spacious, and it is better to hang the house so that the bird feels comfortable and safe in it.

The best time for laying eggs and breeding chicks is spring-summer. The daylight hours of parrots during this period can be easily increased to the required 12-14 hours a day (without forgetting about additional electric lighting). Yes, and it is easier to maintain the required temperature in the room (22-28 ° C) in the summer. It is worth recalling that the wavy are very sensitive to drafts, so you need to ventilate the apartment with great care.

Before mating, the birds need to be released to fly more often than usual. This will improve metabolism and strengthen muscles. But during the mating season itself, it is better to leave the married couple in a cage and create a calm environment for her.

The appearance of chicks

If the mating is successful, the female will immediately demonstrate this by her behavior: she will gradually become more calm and inactive. After 8-10 days, the bird will lay the first egg and gradually increase the number of testicles to 6-8 pieces.

As a rule, during the entire period of incubation, the future father takes care of his wife: he feeds her and does not go far. Parrot owners should also be more careful and increase the amount of food supplied to the cage a couple of days before the expected appearance of the first chick.

Two and a half weeks after incubation, a naked and blind parrot chick emerges from the egg. And behind him and the rest - each in his own time. At first, the mother herself feeds the babies, and the male, in turn, feeds her. After about a week, the babies open their eyes, and after a few more days, their first feathers appear.

By the age of one month, the chicks are usually completely covered with feathers. At a month and a half, the parrot is already free (although still not very confident) to fly and eats food itself. After 6–8 weeks, the chick can already be transferred to another cage and even given to new owners. Now he is a full-fledged, independent parrot.

BTW

Budgerigars are flocking birds, and therefore the more pairs live in an aviary, the more actively they breed. And, on the contrary, getting chicks from a single pair is not so easy: in this case, you need to create the most favorable conditions for them to reproduce. However, if you do not intend to constantly breed birds for sale, you should not start more than one pair. After all, the more chicks you have, the more difficult it will be to attach them.

Caring, do no harm: what and how can you feed the birds in winter?

Autumn has irrevocably come into its own, not far off the first frost and frost. Surviving the coldest time of the year is not easy for both people and animals. Especially for birds that stay winter in the city. By the autumn days of bird watching "Oh!" figured out how and what to feed the birds.

Don't give the birds bread!

Ornithologists warn that you shouldn't feed bread to birds, because birds hardly digest it. Breadcrumbs also contain too much protein and fat, and when the stomach is full, it provides little energy. And crumbs of black bread can ferment in the stomach of a bird and even cause poisoning. You also need to remember that although a bird will like a fresh bun, it will not bring any benefit to it, since there is too much moisture in fresh bread, and the feathered one will only freeze faster from such food. What else is bad for birds? All salty, spicy, smoked foods, as well as cereals that have gone bad.

What can you feed the birds with?
  • Experts consider sunflower seeds to be the most versatile food for all kinds of birds. It is important here that they are not salty and not fried. You can also feed birds with pumpkin seeds and dense oatmeal. In general, for each species of birds there is a certain type of food. And what appears in the feeder will determine which bird will arrive for dinner.

  • Feeder with oats, millet and wheat will attract sparrows, goldfinches, greenfinches.

  • Unsalted fat and meat, which is strung on a thin but strong thread - twine and attached to the branches of trees or shrubs, you can feed tits, nuthatches and other birds.

  • Most of the maple and ash seeds - lionfish - fly off the trees and are outside the zone of hungry birds. You can help them by collecting lionfish and hanging them on the feeders. Such a dinner will appeal to bullfinches and waxwings. These birds also love dried mountain ash and hawthorn.

  • And for woodpeckers and crossbills, the main source is cones, acorns and nuts. Leaving them in the feeder, you can attract not only these birds, but also squirrels.

Helpful Hints

Feeders should be placed away from house windows and roads. The bird dining room should be placed so that the space in front of it is open, and birds can see, for example, the approach of a cat. The height to which the feeder is fixed should be about 1.5 meters. Then even children will be able to reach it, and it will be more difficult for cats to jump.

There are two main rules to keep in mind when creating any feeder. First, the feeder must have a roof, otherwise the food will be covered with snow or rain. The hole in it should be wide enough so that the bird can climb in and fly out of it without difficulty. You can make a feeder from any available material. It can be wood, plastic and metal. In the manufacture, you can use bottles, boxes, bags of juice or milk.
According to ornithologists, it is better to add food no more than once a day, otherwise it will make the birds helpless. It is also necessary to monitor the cleanliness of the feeder: remove the remnants of uneaten grains every day and wash the feeder once a month with detergent and hot water.
