How to determine the age of a haircut?

The swift, unlike most birds, has all four fingers facing forward. The plumage of the chicks is dark gray with a white border, the neck is a lighter color. The beak is small and curved. The eyes are very expressive.

Line the box with cloth, including the walls (the grown chick will be happy to hang on the claws on the cloth), then lay paper towels, napkins or toilet paper on the bottom. Also, the chick needs an impromptu nest - a piece of fabric folded into a bundle and rolled into a ring. On such an elevation, the chick can sit, in addition, it will be more convenient for him to relieve himself, hanging his tail. Napkins stained with droppings can be easily replaced.

Shearers need darkness, especially when sleeping, so the house is kept covered with a cloth most of the day. When the grown up swift begins to train wings, it will be possible to organize a comfortable elevated place for him, for example, to cover a plastic bottle with a cloth, which is placed across the box and fixed so that it does not roll.

What and how to feed a shorthair?

Only for a very limited time (no more than 1-2 days) swifts can be fed with a mash: baby food (beef or turkey meat puree), you can also mix dried daphnia into the puree, after soaking it. The main food of swifts is insects. And only with proper nutrition, full-fledged feathers will form in the shearlings, and the bird will be able to rise into the sky. You can buy live food at the bird market, at the pet store or through an ad in the newspaper.

As the main food for a shearling, crickets (house, banana), cockroaches (marble, Turkmen), pupae of red forest ants are suitable. As an addition: flies, moths, small grasshoppers (fillies), flour worm, (white molted larvae), zofobas.

Insects are usually purchased in large quantities, so it is more convenient to freeze them for long-term storage. In cockroaches and crickets, especially large ones, all hard parts must be removed: legs, wings, ovipositor and eggs of females, shield, you also need to crush the head. In adult marbled cockroaches, you can even leave one abdomen. Before feeding, insects should be thawed in warm water.

Food not suitable for swifts: crickets (two-spotted and field), cockroach (house), bloodworm, maggots, earthworms. No food from our table and even a special mixture for insectivorous birds is not suitable for feeding shearers!

Very tiny fledglings are fed once every 30 minutes to 1 hour. At the age of up to one month, shearers are fed at intervals of 1 time in two hours. Swifts older than 1 month are fed 1 time in 3 hours.

A 1-7 day old shearling should eat from 1-3 large cockroaches or crickets per feeding (about 1 gram of feed). Swift seven days old and up to two weeks old - 4 to 6 large crickets or cockroaches. Birds over two weeks old - 8 to 12 large cockroaches or crickets (approximately 3 grams). If crickets or cockroaches are small, then the indicated number is multiplied by two.

After each feeding, you should also give the swift water to drink, dropping 3-5 drops of filtered water into the beak from a pipette or syringe.

Feeding technique

Birds should not be handled with bare hands to avoid damaging the plumage. Therefore, before feeding, the haircut is wrapped in a cloth or napkin so that only the head remains open. Only rare swifts take food on their own, some can learn to do this over time, and some chicks have to be force-fed until the flight itself.

The chick's mouth is tiny, but to open it, there is a little trick - with your thumb and forefinger, lightly press on the sides of the beak. The food is pushed as deep as possible into the neck, after which it is recommended to lightly stroke the bird's goiter. Over time, you can try to take food with tweezers and move the chick in front of your eyes. It is possible that soon he will begin to peck food on his own.

How to understand that a bird is ready to fly?

As you can see, caring for a little haircut is not so easy, so you will probably want to let him out as soon as possible. You can make sure that the bird is ready for flight and independent life by the following signs:

all tubes must come off the feathers;

feather quills should be dark in color;

wings have grown longer than the tail by 3.5 centimeters;

the weight of the chick should be 40-42 grams.

It is better to release the haircut during the day or in the evening, the weather should be sunny without strong wind and rain. You need to choose a spacious open space. The haircut needs to be raised on an outstretched arm, if the bird is ready to fly, it will rise into the air itself. You can't throw a haircut!

My experience of rescuing a shorthaired girl

When my flowery balcony turned into a beautiful garden in early June, I kept going there to admire the flowers. One sunny day I saw among the flowers a tiny feathered creature with large dark eyes and a curved beak. I knew that swifts were nesting in the ventilation pipe between our balconies, and the Internet confirmed that it was the shearling that got to me. The chick looked very weak, and yet I decided to try to save him.

My haircut lived in a spacious cardboard box lined with an old sheet, and the bottom was covered with napkins, cleaning the litter did not take much time, there was no smell from the bird in the apartment. The only difficulty is feeding by the hour with an interval of 1.5-2 hours. If at that time I had not worked remotely from home, then I probably would not have been able to feed the swift, because then the bird would have to be taken with me to work!

To be honest, I didn't feed him at night, but I did the last feeding as late as possible, and I didn't get up too early in the morning. I also did not heat the nest, but the apartment was quite warm.

When I was able to determine the approximate age of the swift, bought cockroaches and went to the dacha for a week, the swift thwarted my plans to live outside the city. On the grasshoppers from the meadow and the moths that flew into the light in the evenings, which I caught with a net especially for him, he somehow matured sharply and even decided to “talk” with me, responding by chirping to my voice.

And soon my swift turned into an "airplane". Of course, I read about flight training, but in practice I could not discern for myself what happened when he began to beat suspiciously in the “nest”. In bewilderment, I opened the lid and my eyes appeared huge wings, on which he either did push-ups from the floor, or flickered with them like a helicopter.

It was no longer a lump lost in a flower box, but an adult strong bird. So he tried to get off the ground. Continuing his amazing exercises, the shorthair looked me straight in the eye, and this is probably the most amazing thing about these birds, they communicate with a person with a look. He seemed to say: “Look, mom, look how I can!”. It was such an incredible miracle after two weeks of constant care and hassle!

After the start of training, we urgently returned to the city, because it seemed dangerous to let him out at the dacha alone, away from the pack.

Trained the wings of short haircuts every day at 10 pm, even check the clock. But here's another hit. After intricate push-ups, the bird opened its beak wide and began to breathe heavily. It turned out that the pet had gained excess weight, and with this he would not take off. I urgently put him on a diet, and my haircut began to lose weight.

On Saturday morning the scales showed 43 (flight rate 40-42 grams), the shearling trained hard for a long time, and we decided to try to take him to the meadow. I gave him water to drink, transplanted into a small basket, and my husband and I went to the forest park. No one really believed that the bird would fly, and some kind of incomprehensible anxiety sat in his soul.
