Bring on the Joy

Seize the moment, or How not to lose joy

Actual

- Mom, I'm bored, what should I do?

– I don't know what to do. Do something?

– What?

- I don't know. Read the book.

It seems that several years have passed in these dialogues. Don't bother me, let me do my job, let me concentrate... How I rejoiced in my youth when my parents took away my restless, noisy child from me for the weekend - and I could just relax. Now that the once restless and noisy child has become calm and quiet, is graduating from high school and easily leaving somewhere for the weekend, for some reason I am not at all happy: the house is empty.

The children have grown up. They have their own business. Already indifferently you pass by bright books, past shelves with fascinating scientific experiments and creative projects, past the most beautiful toys and the cutest children's little things. I might have played with someone, but no one else.

Only now do you understand how much meaning and joy there was in these endless patties, in putting dolls and bears to sleep, in building houses, castles and towers from cubes. Then it seemed - well, as much as possible in the loto, tired of the lotto, let me check the mail already, or something ... Well, now freedom: check the mail - I don’t want to. Then I was already sick of rolling balls and cars, it seemed - I was getting dumber, going crazy, let me urgently do some intellectual activity, I was already stunned by the BBC and zhzhzhzhzh, maybe I can recover in graduate school?

Only when the years pass and this senseless fuss, which you endure as an inevitability, disappears, only then do you begin to appreciate it. This murky troublesome happiness with soft cheeks and sticky fingers - how did I manage to turn away from him, turn him into hard labor and punishment?

No, there is more than enough hard labor and punishment: to feed a spitting child, to put a screaming child to bed, to put a hysterical child in school, to force a resisting one to do the cleaning. .. then too easily Christmas gingerbread houses and March larks with raisin eyes disappear from it - it’s not up to them, it would be better to clean it up; and joint drawing, and reading aloud, and home theater, and tricks - not up to them, there is still so much algebra ...

And it all seems that now this time will pass, this class, that he will finish the elementary school, that he will graduate from school - then real life will begin ... And now the school is over, here is the institute - and it turns out, in this new real life, which has been for so many years seemed coveted, there is nothing remotely similar to the serene joy that snowmen, filmstrips, or some kind of “magpie-crow” bring.

Because everyone has their own real life. It has nightly conversations over tea and a joint hee-hee over some Facebook joke, and common tears, and their own joys - but this is a completely different life.

And after all, it’s not just some business trip to an exotic country that is remembered as the greatest happiness, the purest joy, not the first love, but this: how they ran with their daughter skipping in identical sundresses and wreaths of dandelions, how they sculpted castles from wet sand and looked at the sea at colorful fish, as they read "Two Captains" in the hayloft, and under the hay rustled a mouse . .. I can hardly resist not to say: this will pass very soon, this will pass - and you will have nothing to say to each other. Seize the moment now, when you can still wipe the tears from those clumped eyelashes, you can still kiss that fat cheek, blow that hot nose and say tender nonsense in your ear. Seize the moment, because human life is a vapor, today there is, tomorrow not, today we swear, tomorrow we cry, today they are small and nasty, and tomorrow they have irrevocably grown, and where did our happiness go, where did we miss it?

But I don't say no, because this understanding cannot be put into anyone's head, it comes by itself, but it comes not when it is necessary, but when the children have grown up. And he begins to demand grandchildren, because somewhere he needs to be put? Someone just needs to be loved, pampered and rejoiced without looking back at algebra and candy wrappers on the floor?

But maybe it’s not too late, because right here, from the nursery, a hoarse bass asks “Mom, give me some milk with honey”, and this is the very moment when you need to say not “wait, I’ll finish it right now”, but drop everything and go heat the milk.
