Planning the Forest Themed Baby Shower

I planned this fun forest themed baby shower with a couple other amazing girls and there were rounds and rounds of emails exchanging ideas.

We even had a secret group board on Pinterest to save all of our inspiration. This was such a great planning tool for us! The board is not a secret anymore – click here to follow the rustic woodland baby shower Pinterest board!

Our initial goal was to plan a cute gender neutral baby shower. When we heard that mama was decorating the nursery with a fun forest theme, I mean.. come on, the choice was obvious.

Woodland Baby Shower Decorations

Once we started looking, man were there tons of woodland baby shower decoration ideas out there! We hung this gorgeous ripped fabric and lace banner up on the wall behind the gift table.

We purchased several yards of burlap from the fabric store to use as table decorations, underneath the food and throughout the shower as cheap decor.

For the woodland baby shower decorations on tables, we used stacked up wood rounds, large pinecones, vases with dried wheat, mason jars full of acorns and neutral table clothes.

We played the classic “don’t say baby” game. The fun little twist was the clothespins, which I spiced up with wood grain washi tape (found at Hobby Lobby) and put magnet strips on the back. The pins doubled as favors as everyone got to take home a magnet clip or two!

Woodland Baby Shower Food Ideas

I think my favorite part of the shower was woodland baby shower food menu, which we totally planned around the forest theme! We really took the shower theme to a whole new level with cute food items and played on the fun wording of the food items with labels and names.

Pinecone Cheese Balls – made with a cream cheese cheese ball recipe and arranged in oval shapes and topped with almonds to look like pinecones

Chocolate Acorns – made with a Hershey’s kiss, a layer of peanut butter, a Nilla wafer and a butterscotch chip on the top to look like the stem of the acorns.

Gone Apple Pickin’ – made with sliced applies, block of cream cheese drizzled with caramel sauced and crushed peanuts.

Don’t Feed The Bears – with bowls full of Teddy Grahams

Smores on a Stick – made with large marshmallows, dipped in chocolate and rolled in graham cracker crumbs and then added to a skewer stick. For the holder on the s’mores on a stick, we covered a styrofoam floral block with a moss sheet and then stuck the sticks in! I used a similar concept to create this DIY donut stand for a donut themed baby shower.

To hold the labels for the woodland baby shower food, we simply popped them into pinecones laid on their side. Genius, right?

Oh my goodness, I’m getting hungry looking at all the yummy food. Those s’mores on a stick were sooooo good!

It was so much fun to shower my wonderful sister for the day. I hope she felt just how much love we all have for her (and that little baby already!). We are so excited to support her as she and her hubby embark on the journey of parenthood! We had a great time together catching up with old friends and making new friends! I think we need to invent some more reasons to have showers for each other because they are just so much fun – any ideas?!

Which dishes belong to real Russian cuisine?

We decided to find out what the original Russian food is and where it has gone.

To an alien ethnographer landing somewhere in a residential area of ​​Moscow, it will seem that the national dishes of this region are pasta with mayonnaise, a salad of corn and crab sticks (with mayonnaise) and sandwiches with sausage and mayonnaise. But where are cabbage soup and porridge, and were they at all? Did a full-fledged Russian cuisine exist in principle, or is it a myth?

Yes, there was a kitchen, and what else. And talk about the fact that our ancestors were somehow flawed in the culinary part and sipped sour porridge all year round is complete nonsense. In the same "Domostroy", a book dating back to the 16th century, there are a lot of quite complex dishes.

For example, the old Russian “nanny” is a lamb stomach stuffed with meat and porridge. “Its almost exact copy is the Scottish haggis, but there is barley instead of buckwheat, ,” says Russian cuisine researcher Maxim Syrnikov. - The Scots are terribly proud of this haggis, they cook it on holidays. Together with the kilt and the bagpipe, this is the main element of national identity. And our "nanny" is known only to those who have read my book. Well, maybe someone else "Dead Souls" remembers well. In the villages, of course, the older generation continues to pickle cabbage. Once I was even invited to the Novgorod region to see how this very "nanny" is being prepared there.

But in the cities they almost forgot their native food. There was no food, no opportunity to cook leisurely. And there was a Soviet public catering, I can’t say a single kind word about it. All the Russian dishes that were served in these canteens, from the kindergarten to the hospital, were monstrous. When you say to a middle-aged Russian: “Let's eat some cabbage,” he instinctively frowns. Shchi is something gray, tasteless, from that Soviet life. It is all the more interesting to see the reaction of a person for whom you cook real daily cabbage soup from boiled lamb and good cabbage.

It is useful to know a few fundamental theses about real Russian food. Here they are.

1. Cooking slowly

The technology of using fire is decisive for national cuisines. “Here, let's say, a Chinese wok is a deep frying pan in which the lion's share of Chinese dishes is cooked quickly, over high heat,” says Syrnikov. - The Chinese themselves explain its appearance as follows: firewood in China has always been in short supply, but there was a bulk of rice straw, which burned very quickly, but very hot. Therefore, dishes were required that would accumulate this heat and make it possible to cook very quickly. And in central Russia, on the contrary, there have never been problems with firewood, so all cooking revolved around the Russian stove.

The oven, heated for three hours, retained heat not lower than 60-70o for about 12 hours. Therefore, many hours of languishing the product at a low temperature was the key, main method of cooking. The heated stove was used from morning to evening without interruption. They baked pancakes for breakfast in it - they baked them, real Russian pancakes are not fried, not turned over and certainly not tossed, but evenly baked in the oven. At the same time, they cooked cabbage soup and some buckwheat with meat for lunch, dried mushrooms, drowned milk, heated water for washing.

2. Rodim

A short summer brings only one harvest, while a long winter needs to be prepared for supplies - that's why fermentation, salting and soaking food have become one of the main methods of Russian cuisine. A by-product of these works was brine, and we almost forgot that it can be used not only from a hangover. A good brine - without any vinegar, from spring water, salt and herbs - was added to almost all soups and hot dishes 100-200 years ago, just like soy sauce is shoved everywhere in Southeast Asia.

An equally important element was leavened products. White unsweetened kvass - it and only it was poured into okroshka, and not at all the dark sweet kvass we are used to from a bottle. It was added to both meat and fish, getting a thick, rich sauce. There were also sweet, honey, and berry kvass for dessert.

3. Cooking our own

Any national cuisine is dishes from local, available seasonal products. There are a lot of grains in Russia (wheat, rye, buckwheat and barley), which means there will be a lot of pastries and cereals. River fish, wild mushrooms and berries, and northern vegetables — cabbage, turnip, carrots, onions, garlic — will be used for filling in pies. The main Russian meat has always been beef-mutton, and pork was not eaten at all until the 16th century.

4. We cook simply

Like most national cuisines, Russian cuisine in the form known to us finally took shape during the times of industrialization and urbanization, in our case - after the abolition of serfdom. Cities were flooded with people from the village, and they brought simple recipes with them. Village dishes became the basis of the menu of the newly opened taverns, there is even the term "tavern cuisine". Fried swans were not served in these establishments, but all kinds of daily cabbage soup, kulebyaks, pies and mixed hodgepodges in the form known to us come from this tavern cuisine of the late 19th century. The innkeepers, of course, somewhat "improved" and modified the dishes - this is how Greek olives appeared in the Russian hodgepodge.

“Many say that with the disappearance of the Russian stove, Russian cuisine also disappeared, ,” says Maxim Syrnikov. - I am not a supporter of such maximalism, so that only in a blouse from the oven pull the pot with a grip, otherwise nothing. The same cabbage soup, crumbly buckwheat, downy milk porridge can be cooked in the oven. These bricks hold the heat and cool down slowly, just like it happens in a Russian oven.”

You need good cookware for the oven - not necessarily a rustic cast iron (where do you get a fork?), but just a good cast iron pan with thick walls. Only the pot and the lid should be solid, without soldered and even more so plastic parts - everything will fall off from the heat. A cast-iron frying pan without a handle will come in handy, because many dishes are cooked in two stages - first we fry the same meat in a pan on the stove, then add vegetables and send it to the oven. And you can cook good buckwheat pancakes only in such a pan - they must be baked in the oven, otherwise they will be brittle. Ceramic dishes will also come in handy, especially since it is easier to buy than good cast iron.

“In my opinion, there is no particular difficulty with products,” says Syrnikov, . - Even malt is not a problem to get now, it is sold in online stores for bakeries and breweries, and it happens in retail. True, it is difficult to buy good fish in Moscow - there are some sea basses and sea bream around. But in St. Petersburg it’s easy to get both fresh pike perch and burbot liver.”

Little known and misused culinary terms

Red fish is not red fish like salmon or salmon, for example. Red (that is, "beautiful, expensive, festive") in the Russian tradition was called a fish from the sturgeon family.

Sour cabbage soup is not sauerkraut soup at all, but a very fizzy, bubbly, kvass-like drink made from a mixture of rye, barley, wheat, and sometimes buckwheat malt. It was this, for example, that was added to botvinia - a cold soup made from different varieties of fish with beetroot broth and ice.

It is not clear where the word "medovukha" comes from and has nothing to do with real Russian cooking. “Honey honey” (like “hoppy kvass”) is not necessarily alcoholic, it is simply made with hop cones for a pleasant bitterness.
