Infant formula

In the UK and ROI the Government recommends exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months (26 weeks) of life. Some mothers may choose to combination feed with breast milk and infant formula, whilst others may exclusively bottle-feed. Infant formula is the only recommended alternative for the first 6 months.

Ingredients of infant formula

Infant formula is specially formulated to support the adequate growth of infants under 6 months of age, when infants are not breastfed. Most formulas are based on modified skimmed cows' milk and have been designed to match, as closely as possible, the composition of breast milk.

Appropriate use of milks

Breast milk is recommended for the first 6 months of baby's life. The only alternative to breast milk is infant formula. If you’re using infant formula, after 6 months of age Follow-on Milk can be used to complement the weaning diet. The Department of Health recommends that cows' milk should not be introduced as a drink before 12 months of age.

Important notice

We believe that breastfeeding is the ideal nutritional start for babies and we fully support the World Health Organization’s recommendation of exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of life followed by the introduction of adequate nutritious complementary foods along with continued breastfeeding up to two years of age. We also recognise that breastfeeding is not always an option for parents. We recommend that you speak to your healthcare professional about how to feed your baby and seek advice on when to introduce complementary feeding. If you choose not to breastfeed, please remember that such a decision can be difficult to reverse and has social and financial implications. Introducing partial bottle-feeding will reduce the supply of breast milk. Infant formula should always be prepared, used and stored as instructed on the label in order to avoid risks to a baby’s health. ●SMA® Soya milk-free formula is intended to meet the nutritional needs of babies and children who are intolerant to cows’ milk protein, lactose or sucrose. Soya infant formulae are not recommended for preterm babies, those with kidney problems, or those with suspected or confirmed soya allergy, where medical guidance should always be sought. ●SMA LF® is a lactose-free milk based formula for babies and young children who are intolerant to lactose or sucrose, or who are experiencing symptoms such as diarrhoea, tummy ache or wind caused by temporary lactose intolerance. It is suitable as the sole source of nutrition up to 6 months of age, and in conjunction with solid food up to 18 months of age. ●SMA® PRO Follow-on Milk, SMA® ADVANCED Follow-on Milk and LITTLE STEPS® Follow-on Milk are only suitable for babies over 6 months as part of a mixed diet. It should not be used as a substitute for breast milk during the first 6 months of life. The decision to start weaning or to use a follow-on milk before 6 months, should be made only on the advice of a doctor, midwife, health visitor, public health nurse, dietitian or pharmacist, based on baby’s individual needs. ●SMA® PRO Growing Up Milk and LITTLE STEPS® Growing Up Milk are suitable for young children from 1-3 years, as part of a healthy balanced diet and it is not a breast milk substitute. SMA® ADVANCED Growing Up Milk is suitable for young children from the 12th month as part of a healthy balanced diet and is not a breast milk substitute.LITTLE STEPS® PLANTYGROW Plant-based Growing Up Drink is suitable for young children from 1-3 years, as part of a varied and balanced diet and is not a breast milk substitute. Baby food preparation

Although this product is manufactured under strict hygienic conditions, it is not sterile. Failure to follow the instructions for preparation and storage may cause illness in the child.

  1. Pull out the safety seal and open the cover. There is a scoop under the lid. Raise the tab, pull on the foil seal, carefully and safely remove the seal and discard.
  2. Wash hands well. Wash and sterilize all utensils according to the manufacturer's instructions.
  3. Boil 1 liter of fresh tap water. Allow boiled water to cool for no more than 30 minutes. Measure the required amount of water (see Feeding Guide) into a sterilized bottle, being careful - the water is hot. Do not use artificially softened or re-boiled water.
  4. Using only the scoop provided, add the correct number of scoops of powder (see Feeding Guide), lining each scoop with the back of a clean, dry knife. Store the scoop in suspension inside the jar and close the lid.
  5. Close beaker with lid or nipple and lid and shake well until powder is completely dissolved. Warning!

Breast milk is best for babies and breastfeeding should be continued for as long as possible. Infant formula is suitable from birth when infants are not breastfeeding and should only be used on the advice of a doctor, midwife, nurse, nutritionist or pharmacist or other health care professional for mother and child. SMA LF is a lactose-free milk formula for infants and young children who are lactose or sucrose intolerant or who experience symptoms such as diarrhea, abdominal pain or wind caused by temporary lactose intolerance. It is suitable as a sole source of nutrition up to 6 months of age and in combination with solid food up to 18 months of age. SMA LF is not suitable for those who are allergic to cow's milk protein, suffer from galactosemia, or require a galactose-free diet. This product should be used under medical supervision. A thick formula may require a fast flow teat. Do not add extra powder or water to make the feed stronger or weaker, and do not press the powder into the spatula. Using too much or too little powder can make your child sick. If necessary, we recommend preparing each feeding in separate bottles. For hygiene reasons, discard uneaten food from the bottle as soon as possible. For older children, cooked formulas can be added to food. Do not modify or add to the mixture unless otherwise indicated. Do not heat food in the microwave, as this can cause hot spots and burns. Remember that cow's milk should not be drunk during the first year. When bottle feeding, avoid prolonged or frequent contact of milk food with teeth, as this increases the risk of cavities. Seek advice from your doctor or dentist. Always hold your baby in your arms while feeding. Do not leave the child unattended, he may choke.
