Sweet potatoes are one of my all-time favorite vegetables to puree for my baby. Not only do I find that most babies love their naturally sweet taste and creamy texture, but sweet potatoes are also loaded with essential nutrients for a growing baby. That’s a winning combo in my book! 🏆

In this recipe, we will roast the sweet potatoes to bring out their natural caramel-like, earthy goodness before adding a pinch of mild curry powder and blending to a light and smooth consistency. The result? A sweet yet slightly herbal puree with a silky texture that leaves a fine and captivating sleek feel in your baby’s mouth.

  • Sweet Potatoes: These are at the top of the list when it comes to the first foods to introduce to your baby. The nutritional value of sweet potatoes is outstanding, and the sweet taste makes it easy to introduce to your baby. Sweet potatoes are high in beta-carotene as well as the ultra-important electrolyte mineral, Potassium. They also contain Vitamin E, calcium, folate, and plenty of other vitamins and minerals. Thanks to their high fiber content, sweet potatoes help support a healthy digestive tract and promote regular bowel movements for your baby. This recipe calls for 2 sweet potatoes, but you can use more or less depending on how much you want to make.
  • Mild Curry Powder: We are kicking up the flavor profile with mild curry powder to bring out the sweet potatoes’ earthiness, making the puree’s flavor a bit more robust. You can skip the curry powder if you prefer or add another spice like cinnamon, nutmeg, basil, or rosemary.

Shopping & Storing Tip: When purchasing sweet potatoes, look for small to medium sweet potatoes that are firm, smooth, even in skin tone, and without cracks or cuts. Why small to medium? Because the larger ones tend to be starchier. Sweet potatoes stay fresh longest in a cool or room-temperature location, away from moisture, heat, and light.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Prep: Wash the sweet potatoes while ignoring the fact that you probably need a manicure.
  2. Roast: Dry and prick sweet potatoes before popping them onto a baking sheet and into the oven to bake for 50-60 minutes or until tender when pricked with a fork. Let cool to touch.
  3. Discard Skin: Peel away the sweet potato skin and discard.
  4. Place in Blender: Place the sweet potato and curry into a blender or food processor and add liquid of your choice.
  5. Blend: Puree for 1-2 minutes or until completely smooth, adding more
  6. Eat: Serve or freeze for a later meal.

Other Cooking Methods

While I love the rich flavor of roasted sweet potatoes, there are several ways you can cook them to make into a baby food puree.

BEABA Babycook

Place 1 peeled and chopped sweet potato into the stainless steel steamer basket, and place the basket into the glass container, closing the lid. Fill the reservoir tank to a level 3, close and lock the lid. Hit the steam button and let the machine do its magic. Once steamed, transfer the sweet potatoes into the glass container, leaving the water, close the lid, and hit the blend button for 1 minute or until the puree is smooth. Steaming

Peel and roughly chop 2 sweet potatoes. Place them into a steamer basket over 2 inches of boiling water for 10-15, or until tender when pricked with a fork. Puree in a blender as directed below.

Boiling

Place 2 peeled and roughly chopped sweet potatoes into a medium saucepan, add enough water to cover the sweet potatoes, and bring to a boil. Reduce to simmer and cook for 15 minutes or until tender when pricked with a fork. Puree in a blender as directed below.

Instant Pot

You can cook the sweet potato in an instant pot as well. Add one cup of water to the bottom of your instant pot, and add the trivet. Prick the sweet potatoes a few times with a fork and place them on the trivet. Close the lid and set the valve to “sealing.” Turn on the instant pot, select “high pressure,” and set the timer for 30 minutes if you’re using medium sweet potatoes and 60 minutes if you’re using large ones. When the timer goes off, allow the pressure to do a “natural release” before you manually release the rest of the pressure. Let the sweet potatoes cool, and then peel and puree in a blender as directed below.

Puree Feeding Tips

  • Follow your baby’s lead – when feeding purees from a spoon, sometimes there’s a tendency to keep offering bites past the point of your baby being full. Always follow baby’s cues for when they are done eating. Turning away from the spoon, closing her mouth, or pushing food away are all signs that baby is finished with the meal.
  • Try adding a little seasoning or spice to purees – babies like flavor! Or consider changing the temperature of purees from time to time, to slightly warmed or slightly chilled. Varying these aspects adds to the sensory experience!
  • Throwing spoons is a common phase that all babies go through at one point or another. One of the best ways to handle spoon throwing is to ignore it and keep feeding baby as usual (with an extra spoon you already have at the table). If baby ends up also throwing back up spoons #2 AND #3, simply encourage your baby to eat with their hands until they appear to be finished with the meal. ***Give baby plenty of opportunities to practice putting items in and taking items out of containers outside of meal times.

Frequently Asked Questions

When can baby have sweet potatoes?

Baby can eat sweet potatoes as one of their first foods. When a baby can start on solids is determined by their own rate of development, which generally comes between 4-6 months of age. Some of the developmental milestones babies need to reach in order to start solids include: if your baby has solid control of their head and neck, if your baby has doubled in weight, and if your baby is reaching for or opening their mouth when you eat (see my guide here). Before you start your baby on purees, you should consult with your pediatrician to make sure your child is developmentally ready for purees.

Can sweet potato be baby’s first food?

Sweet potato can 100% be baby’s first food if you want it to be. It is recommended to wait to introduce the top eight allergen foods to your baby once a few other well-tolerated foods have been introduced, but otherwise, foods can be introduced in any order so choose whatever you are most excited for your baby to have. 

Is sweet potato a common allergen for baby?

No, sweet potato is not a common allergen, however, as with any food, start with a small portion and be aware of any signs that might be an allergic reaction after introducing it.

Does sweet potato cause constipation for babies?

Too much sweet potato may cause constipation in some babies but they are high in fiber so can also help alleviate constipation in others. If your baby is constipated and eating a lot of sweet potatoes, cut back and see if that helps. 

Can I add spice to this sweet potato puree?

For this recipe, we are adding a pinch of mild curry powder, but feel free to use the following spices instead: cumin, nutmeg, cinnamon, cloves, garlic, thyme, mint, basil, or fresh ginger (see quantity recommendations in the recipe card).
Tip on Spices: I always add spices or herbs to my baby food purees, but you can choose to leave them out. You do you! Either way, this puree will surely turn out scrumptious. 

How to Store Sweet Potato Baby Food
REFRIGERATOR

You can store this puree in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days. 

FREEZER 

This puree can be frozen for up to 4 months.

  • Spoon the puree into a freezer storage container (this is my favorite freezer storage container). Do not overfill. 
  • Place the lid on the storage container or cover with a piece of saran wrap — label with the date and recipe name. 
  • Place the tray into the freezer and let it freeze completely — preferably overnight. 
  • Pop-out the baby food cubes and place them in a zip-lock baggie or stasher bag. Don’t forget to relabel the baggie or stager bag for future reference.

Recipe Tips

  • Sweet Potatoes: Look for medium sweet potatoes that are even in color with no scratches. Large sweet potatoes are starchier and might make the puree too thick.
  • Pureeing: Root vegetables absorb a lot of liquid while pureeing, so don’t be shy about adding extra liquid while blending. I had to add a full cup of liquid to the sweet potatoes to get them smooth. Start by adding 1/4 cup of liquid and slowly go up from there as needed.

  • 2 medium sweet potatoes
  • 1/4 tsp mild curry powder (optional)
  • 1/4-1 cup liquid or pureeing, (water, fresh breast milk, formula, or sodium-free chicken stock)
  • Prep: Heat oven to 400°. Line baking sheet with tin foil, parchment paper or a silicone mat.

  • Bake: Wash and dry the sweet potatoes. Prick with a fork in several places and then place the sweet potatoes on the baking sheet. Bake for 45 minutes – 1 hour or until a fork can easily prick the sweet potato. Let sit until cool to touch.

  • Peel: Cut into the skin of the potato lengthwise and peel away the skin of the potato. Scoop out the sweet potato meat and place it into a blender or food processor, adding in the mild curry powder and liquid.

  • Blend: Puree on high for 1-2 minutes or until smooth, adding in additional liquid in 1/4 cup increments if needed. I had to add in 1 cup of water to the puree pictured.

  • Eat: Serve to baby or freeze for a later meal.

Age: 4-6+ months and up

Yield: 24 ounces

Additional Spices: Feel free to use the following spices instead of the curry – 1/2 tsp of cumin, 1/4 tsp of nutmeg, 1/4 tsp of cloves, 1 fresh garlic clove, 1/2 tsp of chopped fresh thyme, 3-4 basil leaves, 1/2 tsp chopped rosemary or even a big pinch of fresh ginger or 1/2 tsp ginger powder. Or you can leave out the spices altogether.

Storage: Fridge – store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days. Freezer – can be frozen for up to 4 months.

Sweet potato baby food recipes for 3 stages – A detailed post on introducing sweet potatoes to baby along with 3 easy tried and tested recipes. Sweet potato is considered to be one of the best first foods for babies. It is nutrient rich, easy to digest and can be prepared in many different ways.

Before you introduce sweet potato to your baby, speak to your pediatrician to confirm if it is the right time for you introduce it. Most babies develop a good head to neck control by 6 months of age, which is a good sign to understand your baby is ready enough for solids.

You can check out this detailed post on how to introduce solids to your baby. In this post I have shared 3 recipes for different age groups.

Stage 1 for 6 months old baby
Stage 2 for 7 to 11 months baby
Stage 3 for 12 months to 2 years old

The texture of the baby food is different at each of these stages & is likely accepted by most babies. However if your baby still cannot eat it then you may go back to the earlier texture (stage 1).

Choosing sweet potatoes

Choose locally grown sweet potatoes as they are fresh and more delicious. If possible look for organically grown and less fibrous sweet potatoes. Avoid those with lots of fiber as they really don’t get pureed or mashed well.

4 ways to cook sweet potatoes

  1. Steam the sweet potatoes in a steamer or a pot by placing a steaming basket inside the pot.
  2. Boil them in a pot by pouring enough water to cover them.
  3. Pressure cook them in a traditional pressure cooker or an Instant pot. I used my Instant pot here to boil them. The Instant pot timings will depend on the size of your sweet potatoes and the kind you used. I have given the details in the recipe card below.
  4. Grill them in an oven. This option is better when your baby is around a year so it begins to know the flavors. Grilled sweet potatoes have a different kind of flavor. Just wrap them in a foil and grill them in your oven.

Stage 1 – sweet potato puree

Stage 1 food is for babies who completed the 6 month and is into 7 month. At this stage a baby needs pureed food atleast for a few weeks so it is easy to get used to solids.

The best way to make sweet potato baby food for stage 1 is to puree the boiled or steamed sweet potatoes with some warm water or the water in which it is boiled. Most pediatricians suggest using breastmilk. You may go ahead if you prefer. But I always preferred warm water as it is easier for babies to digest single foods.

How to make: Peel and chop the boiled sweet potato and add them to a blender.

I used a glass chopper here. Earlier I would use steel and glass smoothie blenders for my babies which I had kept exclusively for making baby foods.

Blend the sweet potatoes first and then pour water in batches just as needed. Blend to a slightly smooth puree. Over blending makes the sweet potato puree very sticky. Here is the texture of the prepared stage 1 sweet potato baby food. I haven’t made thicker or smoother than this anytime.

Stage 2 – Sweet potato baby food

Stage 2 is for babies after completing 7 months. Once your baby develops a taste for different veggies and single grain cereals, you can try this one. To make food at this stage I would cook the peeled and chopped sweet potatoes along with some rice.

We Indians introduce homemade ghee (clarified butter) to babies along with solids. So I would add some ghee to this and then mash all of them well.

At this stage a baby can easily accept mashed foods without having to puree them. So you can keep the texture slightly coarse. However if your baby is unable to accept it then puree it in a blender.

As your baby grows, increase the serving size and move on to a coarse texture. This is the stage where the baby learns to accept mashed foods. So aim to move towards mashed foods from pureed.

After 8 months you can add clear soups, broths or more veggies to increase the nutrition. Use only veggies that you have introduced previously.

The second option for stage 2 is to just mash or puree the boiled sweet potato with some precooked rice which you make for your family.

Stage 3 – Sweet potato rice baby food

Stage 3 sweet potato baby food is for babies from 12 months to 2 years. The first option is to just add some butter and mash the sweet potatoes well. Most babies begin to enjoy mashed soft foods at this stage without having to puree them as they love the texture. If your’s still can’t then go back to the earlier stage until your baby is ready.

The second one is made with rice, sweet potatoes, ghee and jaggery. Back home in India, jaggery is introduced to babies after 6 to 7 months considering it is a rich source of iron.

Once your baby completes 12 months, you can make this rice and sweet potato dish with jaggery and ghee. It is like a pudding and tastes delicious.

If you do not want to introduce jaggery to your baby too early at 12 months, then you can always wait until your baby turns an year old. This is the picture of the food made with jaggery, rice, ghee and sweet potatoes.

How to make

Soak rice for about 30 minutes and cook it with sweet potato. I used half brown rice and half white rice and soaked it for about 2 hours. Then i cooked it on a low to medium flame until soft for two whistles in a pressure cooker. If you have an instant pot, cook it for 10 mins with PIP method.

Dissolve jaggery in clean drinking hot water and set aside.

While the rice is still hot, mash it up well with a spoon. Don’t worry about the color. Rice gets discolored due to the sweet potatoes like you see in the picture below.

Filter jaggery water to the pot. Make sure the rice and sweet potato is softly mashed before adding jaggery syrup otherwise the rice turns grainy.

Stir and make a uniform thick mixture. You can optionally cook on a low to medium flame till the rice bubbles well. Add ghee. You can also add cardamom powder to flavor it.

Cool it completely and feed the baby before 2 hours of preparing it.

Stage 1 sweet potato baby puree
  • Rinse the sweet potatoes well and boil them until tender. If using an Instant pot, pour water inside the steel insert and place the sweet potatoes on the steam rack. Pressure cook them for 5 mins if using medium sized one, 10 mins for larger ones.

  • When the sweet potatoes are done, cool and peel them. Puree in a blender with some water or breast milk. Stage 1 baby food should be soft.

For stage 2
  • Rinse rice well in a bowl. Soak for about 30 minutes. Drain the water and pour fresh water.

  • If using instant pot, Pour 1 cup water to the steel insert. Place the bowl over a trivet and cover the bowl. Press pressure cook button and Set the timer to 10 mins. If cooking in a traditional pressure cooker, cook for 3 whistles on a medium flame.

  • When the pressure releases, remove the bowl and mash the rice well. If needed you can add water or soup to bring it to a consistency. If you prefer a smoother texture, then puree the sweet potato baby food.

For stage 3
  • Add jaggery to the hot food along with ghee and mix well. If your jaggery has debris, then dissolve it in little boiling or hot water. Then pour this to the cooked sweet potato baby food.

  • Cool the baby food first and then serve.

Let's see what actually is sweet potato, which is called sweet potato.
Sweet potato is a tuber that is formed from the roots of a creeper. Moreover, most of this vine is edible: leaves and stems. They are boiled before use and added to salads, cooked with other vegetables. Interestingly, the seeds of this vine can also be used. They learned how to make a useful coffee substitute. Thus, sweet potato has no connection and analogy with the usual, well-known potato.

The fruit appeared for the first time in Colombia and Peru. It was actively used and distributed throughout South America. Over time, as ties between continents became intense, it was brought to Europe, China, India, and even Indonesia. The tuber is still popular in all these countries. And even in Russia it is successfully grown in some areas. Good harvests are observed in the Amur and Novosibirsk regions. And also in Altai and in the Khabarovsk Territory, in Bashkiria.

Varieties of Sweet Potato

Today, many varieties of sweet potato have been bred. It comes in white, purple and red. But the most common and delicious is considered bright orange, elongated. In Asia, purple is preferred.

There are two large groups of sweet potatoes: edible and ornamental. In turn, food, in accordance with the content of glucose, is fodder, vegetable and dessert. And they distinguish several varieties by name:

  • salmon
  • pumpkin
  • caramel
  • chestnut

Benefits of sweet potato

Even in ancient times, people noticed that sweet potato saturates the body well. And it helps with some ailments. And modern scientists have already comprehensively studied the tuber and made conclusions about its various benefits.

Sweet potato composition

Sweet potato composition excellent. Per 100 grams of product: water - 69. 6 grams, protein - 1.53 grams, low fat - 0.17 grams, carbohydrates - 23.8 grams, fiber - 4.1 grams. The calorie content of products is 117 kcal per 100 grams.

Vitamins in sweet potato

By the presence of vitamins, sweet potato stands out for its high content of vitamin A, approximately 210% of the daily value. Moreover, the proportion of vitamin C is also noticeable - 52% of the daily requirement. And vitamin E - 35% of the norm. We remind you that this the triad of vitamins is called "beauty vitamins".

Group B is represented by 5 species: B5, B6, B7, B3 and B1, and this is good for the central nervous system. Moreover, it prevents oxidative processes. Trace elements in the root crop are also diverse: manganese, copper, potassium, calcium, phosphorus and magnesium.

How to cook sweet potato.

Many different dishes can be prepared from sweet potato. And this is not surprising. After all, the history of its use by humans for food has several thousand years. And, of course, during this time, people have come up with many ways to cook this root crop.

And the fact that in subsequent years sweet potato spread in Europe, Asia, North America and Russia only added to the variety of dishes from it. And today we will present you the most popular, in our opinion, sweet potato dishes.

  5. 2 minutes before cooking, add butter to the stew. Adult servings can be lightly salted before serving. You can add sour cream or yogurt to the children's dish. You can also serve the stew with Hamé Rabbit puree.
