United Airlines Will Now Serve In-Flight Kid's Meals

United Airlines has reintroduced its kids’ meals—an offering that was discontinued during the pandemic—on domestic and international flights that are more than 2,000 miles and in cabins where complimentary meal service is offered.

So, what’s on the menu for kids flying United? For breakfast, it’s French toast, sausage, fruit, and a croissant. And for lunch and dinner, the kids’ meal includes chicken tenders, fruit, a dinner roll, and dessert, as well as the option for a grilled cheese on international flights returning to the United States.

The new kid-friendly food choices come just in time for the busy holiday season, when countless families hit the road. In order to get a kids’ meal, passengers need to choose the “children’s meal” as a special meal option either when they are booking their United flight or to add the request to an existing reservation through the United app at least 24 hours prior to their departure.

Unfortunately, the kids’ meals will not be available for domestic economy passengers, as meal service is not complimentary in economy on domestic flights. But economy passengers on international flights will have the option as will first-class fliers on domestic flights that are more than 2,000 miles.

A preordered child’s meal is available on all JAL Japan Airlines flights.

United isn’t the only carrier catering to kiddos. Several airlines offer infant and children’s meals designed for younger passengers, including:

Air Canada

Meals for children age 1 and up can be booked in advance for premium and business fliers within North America and for international flights.

Air France

Air France offers a child’s meal designed for kids ages 2 to 8.

British Airways

Travelers can order special children’s meals ahead of their long-haul flight, which British Airways describes as nonvegetarian meals suitable for kids age 2 to 12. The carrier also has a “feed kids first” policy that ensures that preordered kids’ meals are served in advance of the main cabin service.

Emirates

You can request a children’s in-flight meal in advance for kids age 2 to 12.

Etihad

On Etihad, request a children’s meal at least 24 hours before your flight, and the carrier will provide a nutritious offering and sweet treat designed for kids age 2 to 11.

JAL Japan Airlines

Japan Airlines offers a meal option for children that can be booked in advance on all of its routes for all kids ages 2 and up. Kids flying first and business class out of Narita and Haneda get extra fancy kid-friendly food service.

Lufthansa

On Lufthansa’s long-haul flights and some Europe routes, a child’s meal can be booked in advance; designed by top German chef (and father) Alexander Herrmann, it includes “playful elements” while presenting a nutritious and balanced meal for kids.

Singapore Airlines

All passengers can preorder a child’s meal that is either Western cuisine, Asian cuisine, or vegetarian for kids age 2 to 12. The options can be booked up to four months prior to flight and must be made at least 24 hours before departure. The airline also has a “Book the Cook Yummy!” menu for kids flying in suites, first, or business class. The expansive premium menu includes a burger, fish fingers, fried rice, mac ‘n’ cheese, spaghetti and meatballs, and chicken with rice, among other options.

Turkish Airlines

Turkish Airlines has specially designed meals for children that don’t contain fish or meat with bones, nuts, seeds, or spice.

Qantas

The Aussie carrier offers a child’s meal option that can be preordered for travelers age 2 to 11.

Qatar Airways

Qatar Airways serves up its child’s meals in a fun meal box (which kids can keep) that includes a nutritious meal, juice, and treats. Travelers must preorder it.

The majority of the above carriers also offer a baby or infant meal option and/or have some baby food available on board.

United Airlines Brings Back Kids’ Meals In-flight

By Steven Walker

Special meals for children return just in time for the holiday season.

United Airlines is once again offering children’s meals onboard selected flights. As of November 1st, 2022, special breakfast, lunch, and dinner options are available on eligible flights when ordered in advance.

At the start of the pandemic, and in a bid to reduce contamination, United Airlines was one of the many carriers worldwide that reduced their onboard meal offering. This move included no longer providing food options for children.

The airline gradually began restoring onboard meal services last year, but children’s meals were much slower to return. Rivals American Airlines, for example, were quicker to bring them back. However, they are now back onboard United Airlines too, and just in time for the busy holiday season.

Photo: United Airlines

On eligible domestic and international flights departing from the US, the children’s selection is made up of French toast with sausage, fruit, and a croissant for breakfast. For lunch and dinner, the children’s option is chicken tenders with fruit, bread roll, and dessert.

For those traveling on eligible international flights departing to the US, the breakfast remains the same as on flights leaving the US, but the lunch or dinner option is made up of a grilled cheese sandwich, bread roll, and dessert.

United Airlines’ managing director of hospitality and planning, Aaron McMillan, celebrated the return of meal options for children, saying,

"We're committed to providing a great onboard experience for all of our customers, and we're thrilled to be able to offer our youngest flyers new, kid-friendly food options on select routes. We know there's a lot to balance when traveling as a family – especially during the busy holiday season – and hope this helps to put parents' minds at ease as they prepare for travel with us."

Which flights are eligible for children's meals?

Children’s meals are available on flights that are over 2,000 miles and offer a complimentary meal service. This includes domestic routes to Hawaii (although not from the airline’s West Coast hubs) and international long-haul flights.

For example, an economy class flight from Newark (EWR) to Amsterdam (AMS) would be eligible. However, a flight from Newark to Los Angeles (LAX) would not. That is because despite the flight being more than 2,000 miles in length, no complimentary meal service is offered in economy class.

Keeping the kids happy

Those flying on the Star Alliance member airline with children over the holiday season will no doubt be pleased by this latest announcement – having a dedicated children’s meal is a surefire way to keep little ones entertained, even if only for a few minutes.

Expected better from United, but in reality it turned out that they have 1. rather cramped cabins even on international flights 2. Mediocre food 3. huge queues at check-in plus I was forced to pay almost a hundred dollars for the second piece of luggage, although my ticket indicated TWO seats on the ticket price! No matter how much I quarreled with them at the front desk, it was all in vain. I had to pay (Think carefully before flying with them, sheer hassle.

The flight is disgusting. First, the flight was delayed for an hour (we were sitting in the cabin) due to a technical failure. Then we were transferred to another plane, and there we again sat for 40 minutes. After that, we were informed that the flight was being postponed the next day! Well okay? And that is not all! Then we had to wait in line for another 2 hours while we were registered for a new flight and food stamps were distributed and sent to a hotel. Brad is complete.

      History

The airline was founded in 1926 after the merger of Varney Air Lines, United Aircraft and Transport Corporation (UATC). March 28, 1931 UATC formed United Air Lines as a subsidiary. The final formation took place in the period from 1928 to 1930, thanks to the merger of many air carriers and aircraft manufacturing companies.

By 1930, United Airlines provided air cargo and passenger traffic from the East to the West Coast of the United States. The one-way flight took 27 hours. To help passengers, the airline hired a qualified nurse, Evelyn Church. It is her who is considered to be the first stewardess.

United's first destinations were shaped by the needs of mail service—east-west from New York through Chicago and Salt Lake City to San Francisco, and north-south to the West Coast. Dockings were made in Chicago and San Francisco, and later in Denver and Washington. These cities are still considered the largest hubs of United Airlines.

During World War II, United pilots modified planes for bombing missions, transported letters, ammunition, and provided other assistance to the Allies.

In the post-war years, United introduced new technologies to aircraft and began to actively develop Pacific destinations. This caused a high demand for air travel among the population.

In 1954, United became the first airline to develop a flight simulator with visual, audible, and motion cues for civilian pilot training. In May 1981, the airline launched its own loyalty program, Mileage Plus.

In 1984 it launched flights to Atlanta, Nashville, Memphis, Little Rock, Fargo, Casper, Jackson and Charleston. So United Airlines became the first airline serving all 49states with civilian airports.

Since 1983, regular flights to Tokyo from Portland and Seattle have been opened. By the end of 1986, the geography of routes to 13 Pacific destinations.

In 1997 United creates Star Alliance with Air Canada (Canada), Lufthansa (Germany), Scandinavian Airlines (Sweden, Norway, Denmark) and Thai Airways (Thailand).

After the September 11, 2001 attacks, the company was under pressure and suffered losses. The management was forced to cut the cost and costs of flights. To increase the confidence of passengers, the company invested in new projects and purchased modern equipment.

On April 16, 2010, United resumed merger talks with Continental. On May 2, 2010, the owners agreed to merge to create the largest airline in the world. Continental and United Airlines have designed a new logo. United and Continental announced that the United Mileage Plus bonus program will continue to exist for both companies under the name MileagePlus.

From January 2018, United plans to grow and add 4-6% of passenger traffic by 2020. This news was the reason for the growth of the airline's share price on the stock market.

      Highlights

United Airlines was the first airline in the world to offer its passengers in-flight meals on commercial flights. This step contributed to the emergence of a new profession - flight attendants.

October 11, 1933 Boeing 247 exploded in the air. The plane crashed in Indiana, near the city of Charleston. Seven people on board were killed. After investigating the causes of the explosion, it was found that there was a bomb in the luggage compartment of the aircraft. This incident is considered the first terrorist act in the history of civil aviation. However, the perpetrators and motives of the incident have not been found.

United Airlines transported US President Richard Nixon on December 23, 1973 from Washington DC to Los Angeles.

The largest terrorist act involving the company's board occurred on September 11, 2001. The terrorists hijacked two United airliners. Boeing 767 Flight 175 was sent to the South Tower of the World Trade Center, Boeing 757 Flight 93 crashed in Pennsylvania, as the passengers resisted the terrorists. According to assumptions, he was heading towards the Capitol in Washington.

On April 11, 2017, the company was at the center of a scandal involving the forced removal of a passenger from a Chicago-Louisville flight. Due to overbooking - the practice of many low-cost airlines to sell more tickets than seats on the plane - there were not enough seats for airline employees. They wanted to land four passengers, offering them $400 in compensation, but no one agreed. Then, four randomly selected passengers were offered $800 to cancel the flight.

The two passengers agreed and left the aircraft without issue. The third passenger, a doctor who was expected by the patients, refused. The airline called the police, the employees dragged him out by force, smashing his face. This case caused a stir and indignation with the actions of the airline in the American media. After the publication of the incident, the share price of the carrier began to fall. The company lost $682 million and ruined its reputation.

      Advantages and disadvantages

United Airlines is chosen for the following reasons:

      1. Availability of fare options for tickets for different budgets.
      2. Wide geography of destinations around the world.
      3. Flights to and from Russia to the following cities: Moscow, St. Petersburg, Novosibirsk, Kaliningrad, Samara, Krasnodar, Chelyabinsk.
      4. Availability of the MileagePlus loyalty program.
      5. Large and modern fleet.
      6. Low airfare.

However, United has a number of disadvantages:

      1. Connecting to the US requires a transit visa.
      2. No Russian version of the official site.
      3. The scandalous reputation of the company.
      4. Non-flexible carry-on and checked baggage.

      Passenger reviews

The airline is popular with both Americans and travelers around the world.

Mikhail Stalevarov, Moscow: “I was returning on a transatlantic flight with United Airlines. The first time I flew with them - I was very pleased. In the economy, there is enough legroom for the passenger. Food is good, service is top notch. The entertainment system is full of movies, including new ones. Easy to track your flight. Despite the night flight, I did not experience problems with fatigue. We took off almost on schedule (although we were jostling in line for takeoff) and landed on time. The plane was not new, but no complaints. Very nice American service. And most importantly - the price was great for the flight. I recommend".

Jim Carter, Sydney: “The flight was a disappointment as I purposely purchased a premium economy ticket for the comfort flight promised on the website. We paid more than the standard economy to get more legroom and reclining seats. But the economy class seats on this plane did not recline at all. Not one centimeter! Therefore, the flight on the international flight UA 0840 from Sydney to Los Angeles was excruciatingly uncomfortable after the first hour. Be careful before purchasing paid additional services.”

Shanna Newman, Richmond Hill: “We flew business class from Seoul to Tokyo, then first class from Chicago to Orlando. The service was exceptionally good. The food was excellent, the take off and landing was seamless.
