If you’re the parent of a teething baby or toddler, these healthy homemade teething biscuits are your new best friend. They are so easy to make with a just a handful of ingredients!

Are Teething Biscuits Healthy?

Teething biscuits are designed to be chewed on by babies to help alleviate the discomfort of teething. They are usually made with soft, easily digestible ingredients such as wheat flour, rice flour, and oats. Although not a substitute for nutritious meals and snacks, they can be a healthy part of your baby’s diet.

Parents and caregivers should supervise babies while they are eating teething biscuits and avoid giving them to very young babies who may not yet have the ability to chew solid foods safely. Teething biscuits can also pose a choking hazard if they break into small pieces, so it is important to make sure that the biscuit is soft enough to be easily chewed and that the baby is not left alone while eating it.

However, those brand new, beautiful baby teeth can wreak havoc on their gums.. and teething biscuits can be a lifesaver when it comes to soothing sore little mouths! Many teething biscuits on the market are either a little over-priced or had some extra ingredients I didn’t necessarily want, like sugar, salt, or dairy milk.

I learned quickly how easy it is to make my own. These healthy homemade teething biscuits are portable and you can make a batch and freeze them ahead of time, which is great for when a tooth unexpectedly starts poking through. I love these because there are only 3 primary ingredients, and you can add different flavorings to keep things interesting. They’re soft enough to chew without hurting a sore mouth, but can stand up to plenty of drool!

Ingredients for Homemade Teething Biscuits:

  • Oats– you will want to use regular rolled oats
  • Banana– a ripe banana works best. It will puree better and add sweetness.
  • Coconut Oil– this is used as a binding agent, and gives the biscuits a creamier texture. Coconut oil is also believed to have soothing and pain-relieving properties.
  • Cinnamon– for flavor; this ingredient is optional.
  • Vanilla Extract– also for flavor. You can play around with the seasonings!

How To Make Homemade Teething Biscuits:

  1. Blend the oats into a fine powder using a food processor.
  2. Add banana, coconut oil, cinnamon and vanilla (or any other flavor combination you are using). Pulse until all of the ingredients come together into a dough.
  3. Divide the dough into 12 balls. Shape each piece into a rounded, baton shaped biscuit roughly 1-inch thick and 4-inches long. Make sure there are no sharp edges!
  4. Place on a parchment lined baking sheet. Bake at 350 degrees for 10 minutes. Flip each biscuit and continue baking for an additional 5-10 minutes or until the edges are golden and the center is set but not too crunchy.
  5. Cool completely before serving. Store in the freezer or at room temperature in an airtight container.

Notes on the recipe:
  • For the best oat flour… To make oat flour, you simply measure out the oats and then puree them in a blender or food processor. The finer you blend the oats, the more smooth your final texture will be in the teething biscuits.
  • Change up the flavor! These are fairly bland as is. My children liked them plain like this, but sometimes we’d add a pinch of cinnamon, ginger, or nutmeg, or 1/4 tsp of vanilla extract to the recipe. You can also add 1 Tbsp raw cacao or unsweetened cocoa powder to the recipe. For a savory version, you can use olive oil instead of the coconut oil and add in some spices and fresh or dried herbs. Start small and work your way up!
  • Choose the right shape. I can get about 12 teething biscuits out of this recipe. You want them to be several inches long (long enough for your child to hold onto them) and fairly thin. Please be sure you round out the corners, as sore little mouths won’t want any sharp edges poking their gums!

  • 2 cup oats, dry
  • 1 medium banana
  • 2 tablespoon coconut oil
Optional
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/8 teaspoon cinnamon
  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Prepare a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat.

  • In a food processor (or blender), blend the oats into a very fine powder.

  • Add banana and coconut oil (and any vanilla or spices you may be using) to the blender and puree until mixture comes together in a dough.

  • If the dough is very sticky to handle, you can pat a little flour (gluten free or wheat flour) onto the exterior of the ball to make it easier to handle. If the dough is too dry, you can add a little additional coconut oil.

  • Divide the dough into 12 balls or sections. Pat out each ball into a little baton about 4 inches long and 1 to 1 1/2 inches wide, and about 1/4 inch thick. Round the edges of each baton with your fingers so there are no sharp edges.

  • (Alternatively, you can roll the entire dough ball out into a rectangle about 1/4 inch thick and slice it into 12 rectangles. Round the corners of each rectangle and make the shapes roughly even. I’ve found that shaping each baton works better for me than rolling and slicing, but you can do what works best for you).

  • Place evenly on a baking sheet so that none of the batons are touching. Bake at 350 degrees for 10 minutes. Flip and cook another 5-10 minutes, or until the edges are golden and the centers are set but not too crunchy.

  • Allow to cool completely. Store in an airtight container at room temperature, in the refrigerator, or the freezer.

These super easy homemade teething biscuits are made with only 4 wholesome ingredients. They are perfect for a baby led weaning snack, or will soothe your baby’s sore gums when they are teething. Vegan, gluten free, sugar free, and common allergen friendly, these baby crackers are way healthier than store-bought and so delicious too!

When my kids were teething, finding a store-bought biscuit I felt good about giving to my kids was a challenge! So many of the store-bought brands have added sugar, and are made with refined flours.

I wanted something that was made with all-natural ingredients, whole grain, and naturally sweetened for my teething baby.

As a result, I developed my own simple recipe for homemade baby teething crackers that turned out amazing!

Latest Recipe Video!

These healthy homemade teething biscuits are have a sturdy texture, while also having a great flavor. They’re easy for little hands to hold, and since they are hard cookies, they allow your baby to suck and gnaw on them.

This healthy snack will melt in your baby’s mouth and will relieve teething pain. It’s a great option when your baby needs to practice their pincer grasp to pick up smaller finger foods as well (just break the biscuits into little pieces for them to pick up and eat).

These baby teething biscuits became a favorite with my kids, and I’m so happy to share this simple and nutritious recipe!

🥘 Ingredients

You only need four simple, healthy ingredients for this baby teething biscuit recipe, easily found at any grocery store!

Rolled Oats: Use simple rolled oats that are ground down into a flour consistency in the food processor. You could also use oat flour if you prefer. Oats (and oatmeal) are a whole grain that are gluten-free and also gentle on your baby’s tummy. I don’t recommend whole wheat flour because it’s not gluten free.

Coconut Oil: Gives these finger foods a touch of needed fat, and moisture.

Vanilla Extract: A touch of vanilla gives these baby teething rusks a nice scent and flavor.

Ripe Bananas: Depending on the size of your bananas you’ll either need 2 small, or 1 large. This gives the biscuits natural sweetness without the need for any added sugar. I don’t recommend adding any sweetener like maple syrup to these biscuits – babies don’t need additional sugar in their diet! Avoid honey as well, as that is dangerous to babies under 1 year of age.

📖 Variations

  • Pumpkin Teething Biscuits: Add 1/4 cup pumpkin puree to the batter along with a dash of pumpkin pie spice and cinnamon.
  • Quinoa Teething Crackers: Instead of oats, try using quinoa flour or whole dry quinoa ground into a powder like consistency. These crackers will still be gluten free and you’ll get a little more protein from the quinoa too!
  • Peanut Butter Baby Biscuits: Add 1 tablespoon of powdered peanut butter to the batter before rolling out and cutting into baby rusks. (Note: this will make these biscuits not suitable for any baby or child with a peanut allergy).
  • Add Spices: Feel free to add a pinch of cinnamon, ground ginger, nutmeg, pumpkin pie spice, or a pinch of salt to this homemade teething biscuit recipe for extra flavor!

🔪 Instructions

Preheat Oven, Blend Oats: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F or 170 degrees C. Place the oats into a food processor and blend to form a powder. The dry ingredients for this recipe include the oat flour only.

Combine Flour With Wet Ingredients: Add the rest of the ingredients, including coconut oil, vanilla extract, and bananas until a dough forms.

Roll Out the Dough: Remove mixture from the food processor and, with a rolling pin, roll in between 2 sheets of parchment paper to approx. ¼ inch thick.

Cut Into Sticks: Remove the top layer of paper and cut into 36 evenly sized sticks or rectangles. You can also use cookie cutters to cut these into various shapes!

Bake: Place the sheet of cut teething sticks onto a baking sheet and bake for 10-12 minutes until just cooked through.

Cool: Remove and cool these homemade baby teething crackers on a cooling rack.

❓Recipe FAQs

Why are store-bought teething biscuits bad?

Store-bought teething biscuits may be high in heavy metals. They also have added sugar, which if left on your baby’s budding teeth can cause early tooth decay!

What are teething biscuits made of?

Store-bought teething biscuits vary in ingredients. However, most are made with rice flour, tapioca starch, sugar, some form of fruit puree, and mixed tocopherols (preservatives used to maintain freshness).

What age can you give your baby teething biscuits?

You can give your baby teething biscuits when their teeth begin to bud. This usually occurs between the ages of 4 to 12 months, and most infants begin teething around 6 months of age.

Teething can cause significant discomfort for babies and is typically characterized by a lot of drooling, more irritability, sore gums, red gums, rosy cheeks, a runny nose, or even a mild fever. I recommend waiting to use teething biscuits until your baby is at least 6 months old and has started solids.

How do you change the flavor?

Instead of using banana puree simply use a different fruit puree to change the flavor. You could use pumpkin puree, sweet potatoes, apple sauce, pear puree, or any type of puree you prefer. If you use a fruit puree, make sure to drain all of the liquid so that the batter for these baby crackers doesn’t get too watery.

What is baby-led weaning?

Baby-led weaning, or BLW, is a technique of introducing your baby to solid foods that allows your baby to choose what to eat.

What makes these teething biscuits healthy?

The biscuits are made with whole grains which provides your baby with added fiber. They are refined sugar-free because they are naturally sweetened with pureed bananas. Banana provides your baby with vitamins and minerals such as potassium, vitamin B6, and vitamin C! They also have a touch of healthy monounsaturated fats from coconut oil.

❄️ How To Store

  • Store these baby teething biscuits in a cool dry place at room temperature in an airtight container
  • They will last for several weeks when stored properly.
  • You can also freeze these hard teething biscuits in a freezer safe container for 2-3 months. When ready to serve, remove from the freezer and allow to thaw at room temperature.

💭 Expert Tips

  • There’s no need to add any sweetener to these homemade teething biscuits as they are naturally sweetened by the ripe bananas.
  • Making your own oat flour is simple. Measure out the whole oats and transfer to a food processor or blender. Blend until you reach your desired consistency. I recommend using a blender for a finer consistency.
  • If you’d like, you can use a cookie cutter to achieve different shapes.
  • Use an oat baby cereal if you don’t have rolled oats.
  • Make sure that your biscuits are baked and hard so that they are not a choking hazard.
  • Use rolled oats, do not use steel cut oats.
  • These grain-free teething biscuits have allergy friendly ingredients when it comes to the most common allergens for babies. However, some babies may still be allergic to oats, coconut, or bananas for example, so this isn’t going to cover every single potential allergy (keep that in mind when making these for your baby!)

Infant formula cookies - recipes

Recipes for simple but delicious homemade biscuits made from infant formula Malyutka have been known for a long time. They fell in love with everyone during the period of total shortage, when families with babies and children began to be given powdered milk formula and cereals. The dispensed volume was sufficient, sometimes ready-made cereals based on mixtures remained. At the same time, zealous housewives, accustomed to finding a use for all products, have invented another way to use wholesale baby food in boxes issued in hospitals for several months at once.

Cooked pastries turned out to be tasty and useful at the same time due to such components as

  • milk sugar (lactose) - provides the body with energy, promotes the absorption of calcium and iron, improves digestion;
  • casein - the main building material for the body and a catalyst for biochemical processes;
  • taurine - an amino acid required for the functioning of the central nervous system and organs of vision;
  • linoleic acid - a special fatty acid, indispensable for the normal functioning of the brain;
  • probiotics - strains of microorganisms that stimulate the reproduction of beneficial microflora in the intestines
  • manganese, zinc, copper, selenium and iodine, other vitamins and microelements.

Baby instant porridge biscuits - recipe

An easy way to use dry food for children is to prepare it from ordinary cereal porridge, more often round rice.

To prepare it you will need:

  • a glass of rice;
  • a glass of dry milk porridge;
  • 3 glasses of water.

Rice must be pre-soaked for 20 minutes, then rinsed thoroughly until the water is clear. Dilute milk porridge in 3 cups of warm water, stir and heat over a fire without boiling.

Put the washed rice into the liquid and cook until tender without stirring. Sugar is in the optimal amount, so do not add it.

Dry baby food truffles

A little dry baby food is enough to make truffles.

For this you will need:

  • 500 g of dry "porridge";
  • 2 cups sugar;
  • 350 ml boiled water;
  • pack of butter;
  • 5 tablespoons cocoa.

Use shredded coconut or finely crumbled wafers to garnish.

Place water, sugar and butter in a container, melt and stir until a homogeneous syrup is obtained. In a separate bowl, mix dry milk porridge and cocoa, combine with syrup and mix. Cool the resulting mass to room temperature and place in the refrigerator for 2 hours.

Then form balls from the hardened mass, roll them in shavings and place on a dish. Store truffles in the refrigerator.

Delicious biscuits based on dry baby food

Baking products based on milk formula are both cakes and very tasty biscuits. Requires

  • 300 g milk formula;
  • 50 g cocoa powder;
  • 100 ml water;
  • 250 g sugar.

Prepare syrup from water and sugar - place in a saucepan and bring to a boil, then immediately add oil to it. Boil the resulting mass over low heat until thickened.

Combine cocoa with baby food, slowly add to the thickened syrup with constant stirring. The dough is thoroughly kneaded and cookies are formed, which must be rolled in cocoa and placed on a baking sheet. Warm up in the oven for 20-25 minutes.

As you can see, you can make delicious meals from leftover baby milk formulas. Therefore, do not rush to throw away or give away an extra package of baby food to someone, it is better to please your family with a dessert.
