Yogi and travel blogger Lena Lezhneva about India without embellishment

Lena Lezhneva's Instagram colorfully tells about real life in India, debunks myths about this country, and catches with sincerity. No less sincerely, Lena shared with us her thoughts about the "charms" of yoga in India and a look at the wonderland without rose-colored glasses.

How long have you been living in India and why did you move there? Especially for yoga or for some other reason?

Already 4.5 years. I happened to be in India. My friend and I were planning to leave at least somewhere, and I did not consider India, despite the fact that at that time I had been doing yoga for five years. We considered other countries: Nepal, Thailand and others, and India came by chance. I opened Vkontakte, and the news said something about India, I thought it was a sign. We met with a friend and just bought tickets - there and back. But after a week of being in India (all this chaos and a lot of adventures), I told my friend that I was going to hand over my return tickets. A friend also decided to stay, and we stayed for 6 months. Then our visas ran out and we returned to Russia to renew them. That is, India was not included in my plans, and on that trip I saw the mountains for the first time in my life and fell in love with them. And a year and a half ago I met a young man here, with whom I now live here.

Is yoga in India somehow different from the yoga that is taught here?

In India, the concept of yoga is very different from what we study in Russia. If you want to study yoga, you need those schools that provide a quality level of education and service, and good teachers work. Unfortunately, there are none in India. That is, of course, there are sensible teachers, but they need to be sought. In Russia, this will be easier. In any city, it is easy to find a suitable studio with good mentors. Here, unfortunately, it is difficult to distinguish a good teacher from a bad one, especially for a beginner. India is full of fake teachers who simply collect money by showing some beautiful asanas and poses.

So you advise starting yoga in Russia?

Yes. I live in Kerala, and a Russian girl recently approached me with a question about where she could do yoga here in order to become a teacher later (she also wanted to study yoga for pregnant women). And I can’t say anything comforting, because all the schools and yoga studios that are here do not meet my standards. I don't think my standards are too high. I myself studied at Prana in Moscow and then worked at Kora in Perm - from there I have an idea of the quality of classes. Having looked at how yoga studio teachers treat students here, what quality of service they can provide, I can say with confidence that it is better to study and practice in Russia. At least this is some kind of a specific system, and not torn pieces of knowledge. Of course, there are such schools here as in Mysore, where they study Ashtanga Vinyasa, in Pune, where they study Iyengar yoga - I am not talking about them now, because it is sacred. And in order to study the traditions of these schools, you will have to go to India. But as far as Hatha yoga is concerned, it is probably better for health and general idea to start in Russia.

On Instagram, you wrote that it is difficult to find a good teacher in India, mostly there are also commercial groups. How to find worthy?

In fact, this information is available on the Internet. If you search well on the Web, where to work out in Rishikesh, which teachers to go to in Mysore, you can find it by clicking on reviews. It's simple enough. You do not need to break through walls with your forehead, go through the jungle, swim across rivers to find a teacher. Although, probably, a good teacher in English will have to be looked for in this way ( laughs ).

Do you teach yoga in India yourself?

I recently started teaching yoga in Kerala. The market is different from state to state, whether it's yoga or fitness, whatever. Here I was originally looking for a place where I can conduct classes. In yoga studios in India, directors are not ready to pay teachers, maybe only a few pennies. I teach now at the fitness center, but I'm far from satisfied with everything. I will not tire of repeating that the quality of customer service, the attitude of yoga studio directors, staff to customers leaves much to be desired. The equipment also suffers: for yoga, there must be yoga mats, bricks, belts - there is nothing so sensible here either.

Why do you love India then? For nature?

It's very difficult for me to say if I love India, because when you travel around the country with a backpack for months, one picture emerges for you. And when you start living here, you come across the reality of this life, traditions, people, you have to work here, solve serious issues, and not just communicate, then the colors of the journey fade. You see reality and understand that it is the same as everywhere else. Many can say how bad and gray it is in Russia, it is absolutely no better here. Everywhere has its pros and cons, but I would not say that I love India with all my heart, as I used to.

But you said that India grants wishes.

Yes, it is, but it happens when you are more or less free, you can move freely in space: if you didn’t like the place, you packed your backpack and left. You don't have to sit in one place and work with the same people every day. I believe that desires start to come true anywhere, when you start traveling, this happens not only in India. A person changes the environment and can choose what he wants: an airplane, a bus, a car, a motorcycle, something else. He begins to open up to the world, and the world opens up to him. It's different languages, different culture, different food. And a person either has to close or open (and it is very difficult to close when traveling), and if he opens, real miracles begin to happen. This happens not only in India, but in every country in the world. Probably, this applies more to India because the country is very old with centuries-old traditions, many mysteries and fairy tales are associated with it. And this aura of mystery gives the country a certain charm, so people dream of coming here and believe in a miracle.

Is it necessary to go to India for enlightenment? Or does everyone have their own way and this option is not suitable for everyone?

Tough question. When viewed in the context of yoga, I believe that escaping from reality to a monastery in the mountains, where there will be no connection, is the easiest way. It is easy to pack a backpack, leave obligations, work and family in Perm, for example, and say: “Guys, dosvidos, I went to seek enlightenment in the mountains with monks, and you live as you want.” But a person has obligations to the family, parents, in society. And it is very difficult to seek peace in society, and it is very easy to seek and find peace in a monastery in the mountains. From my own experience I can say that the practice of meditation in such Buddhist places is very cool: you get up at 5 in the morning, you run to the monastery, the monks sing mantras, you sit down to meditate with them, you have a surge of energy, you understand that this is very cool. But it is very difficult when you are sitting in Perm at -25 C and it is dark at five o'clock in the evening, you need to work, cook food, clean the apartment, and in all this it is very difficult to find the time and desire to do some kind of practice. I believe that this is a "tower" when a person at -25 C, after all his household chores, finds time to work out, do 5-10 asanas, meditate and breathe. I would listen to such a person more than a person who escaped from the world and hid in a monastery and received some kind of enlightenment there.

What advice would you give to those who are going to India for yoga practice ?

I advise you to start studying in Russia. A person will have a certain standard, a certain vision. I noticed that teachers in Russia somehow correct the posture, do not allow it to be done incorrectly, but in India they treat it like hell: you do an asana, no one pays attention to it, so a beginner can cripple himself. I advise you to study the information on the Internet, find reviews about teachers and go to someone specific, not at random. You can, of course, come to Rishikesh and spend a lot of time searching, but it’s better to study everything on the shore and then head into the pool.
