Serve up healthy comfort food with this easy recipe for healthy Mashed Potatoes with Broccoli. It’s quick and so yummy and is one of our favorite family side dishes to share.

Healthy Mashed Potatoes

I love when I find a method of cooking that simplifies dinnertime and this one fits the bill—you get to combine two sides (potatoes and broccoli) into one creamy mash!

We love making this recipe to go with things likeBaked Chicken Tenders or Chicken Nuggets and I find that it’s very easy for little kids to eat with a spoon, fork, or even their hands.

My middle kiddo loves this recipe so much, which honestly has been a surprise to me since she’s hit or miss on broccoli on it’s own. When she was reluctant to try it the first time, I asked her to take a tiny taste test and give it a thumbs up, down, or in the middle.

That engaged her and helped her to be brave enough to try a new food. And she loved it! (That doesn’t always happen but it did in this case.)

Ingredients You Need

The foods you need to make this recipe are super streamlined and straight forward. Here’s a look:

  • Yukon gold baby potatoes (or another similar white or yellow potato)
  • Broccoli
  • Butter or olive oil
  • Sour cream
  • Salt

TIP:  You can also use plain Greek yogurt instead of sour cream if desired.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Here’s a look at the process involved in making this recipe. Scroll down to the bottom of the post for the full recipe.

  • Dice the potatoes and broccoli.
  • Cook in boiling water.
  • Drain.
  • Mash with a potato masher with the butter, sour cream, and salt. Serve!

TIP: You can peel the potatoes if you want a creamier, more uniform mixture, though I usually leave them on.

Best Tips for Success

  • Use Yukon gold baby potatoes (or another similar white or yellow potato) for the creamiest texture.
  • Trade in cauliflower for broccoli if desired.
  • Use plain Greek yogurt instead of sour cream if desired.
  • Salt to taste for your liking.
  • Let kids eat with a spoon, fork, or their fingers.
  • Serve as a side dish with Baked Chicken Tenders or Chicken Nuggets.

puree is a favorite Russian dish, which is always prepared for any holidays. nine0003

I don't even know people who don't like this puree. It can be prepared in various ways. Moreover, mashed potatoes for adults are different from mashed potatoes for children.

Don't give your child mashed potatoes often. If the child eats soups with potatoes, then once a week in the amount of 100 grams of mashed potatoes will be enough.

Mashed potatoes can be served with meat and fish dishes, with vegetables.

Approximate age of acquaintance with potatoes after 8 months. nine0003

Potatoes for children are soaked in cold water. But after a year, potatoes can not be soaked.

I offer several recipes for mashed potatoes. As your child becomes familiar with the foods, mashed potatoes can be made more complex and tastier.

It is better not to add salt until a year old. After a year at the request of the family. The perfect mashed potato is made with a potato masher, potato broth, and a mixer.

The blender whips the puree to a paste, which can be seen in the photo for baby puree. But such puree is given until the baby learns to chew. We did not give it for long, then smoothly switched to mashed potatoes with lumps, and then just began to mash the mashed potatoes with a fork and add butter. nine0003

  • As you can see in the photo, the water has become cloudy, this is the starch coming out of the potato.

  • Roughly potatoes are boiled for about 30-40 minutes depending on the size of the product. If chopped finely, like a soup, then about 20 minutes.

  • For children

    1. As soon as the potatoes are cooked, add butter, a little potato broth, beat with a blender until a homogeneous liquid consistency. Serve warm.

    With milk

    1. The milk must be hot. Instead of mashed potatoes, put hot milk in mashed potatoes. Grind with a crush in puree, add milk and butter and beat with a mixer with a whisk until smooth and airy.

    With egg

    1. Grind the mashed potatoes to a puree state, make a depression in the form of a funnel and break the egg into it.
