This easy, no-cook puree is an excellent source of vitamin C and fibre. Serve papaya puree by itself or mix with a range of other purees.
Choosing and Storing Papaya
You can use both red papaya or yellow papaw to make this puree.
- Red papaya is a tropical fruit with a green/yellow skin. It has a bright orange, smooth flesh and a sweet flavour.
- Yellow papaw has yellow/orange skin, bright yellow/orange flesh and a less sweet flavour.
When choosing the fruit…
- Look at the skin colour: Red papaya is ripe when the skin is more yellow than green. Yellow papaw is ripe when the skin is yellow/orange.
- Touch: Give the fruit a gentle squeeze under the stem. If it’s ripe, it will give slightly.
- Smell: Ripe papaya/pawpaw will have a fruity aroma when ripe.
Store unripe fruit at room temperature and it will ripen in a few days. You can speed up the ripening process by placing in a paper bag with a banana.
Ripe fruit should be stored in the refrigerator and consumed within one or two days.
How to Make Papaya Puree
The great thing about papaya puree is that it requires no cooking. If your fruit is ripe then it will blend easily.
- Cut the papaya in half, lengthways, and scoop out the seeds with a spoon
- Use a small sharp knife to cut the flesh away from the skin of each half. Discard the skin and cut the flesh into bite-size chunks.
- Puree the papaya in a food processor or blender until smooth. You can add a little baby milk, if needed, to reach desired consistency and make a creamier puree. (For a chunkier puree you can mash the papaya instead of pureeing).

- Freeze: Spoon the puree into ice-cube trays and freeze until solid. Once fully frozen, quickly pop them all out and place into a freezer bag or airtight container and return to the freezer. Thaw overnight in your refrigerator.

For Papaya Puree for Babies
- To make papaya puree for babies, choose a ripe papaya. Look for papaya that is deep yellow and orange in colour and is free of bruises and blemishes. On touch it should be just about firm and should have a fruity aroma on smelling. Papaya is a fruit which ripens very soft, so buy it fresh and use it. Don’t store it for more than a day or 2. If you wish to store it, keep it in an open tray in a cool dry place at room temperature. Wrapping it for long might lead to over ripening.
- Wash the papaya before use. Though you are going to peel the papaya, washing it to make it completely free of dirt is very important. Wash it under running water to prevent any sort of contamination. Wipe it with a clean kitchen cloth.
- Peel the papaya. Cut the papaya vertically or horizontally into 2 and using a sharp knife peel off the skin. Do not leave any white pith if any, but at the same time do not peel it very thickly as much of the fiber lies just beneath the skin of the papaya.
- Deseed the papaya. Scoop out all the seeds of the papaya with a spoon. You can use the same knife also to remove the seeds. Double check that no seeds remain as the baby’s digestive system isn’t well-suited for its digestion.
- Chop the papaya. Chop the papaya into cubes or roughly chop it using a sharp knife. At this stage again ensure that there are no seeds or white pith. If there is any discard it.
- Puree the papaya. To do this you can just place the papaya cubes in a bowl and mash it with the back of a spoon or preferably a fork. Alternatively you can puree it in a blender. Puree it very well till it smooth and no cubes remain.
