Why You Might Want a Baby Scale at Home

Like a lot of moms, I struggled with breastfeeding for the first few weeks of my daughter’s life. I didn’t expect it to be so uncomfortable – not to mention downright painful at times. I struggled to find the right breastfeeding pillow, the right nursing cover, and with all the rules around storing breastmilk and keeping bottles insulated in the stroller.

Mostly though, I constantly worried whether my daughter was getting enough to eat.

A friend who’d had a baby a few months before us mentioned she used a baby scale for breastfeeding – she weighed her baby before feeding and after feeding on a digital baby scale, and calculated the difference to find out if her son was eating enough each time. I asked the public health nurse that visited us weekly in the early days, and she agreed this method of weighted feedings was a good way to my mind at ease.

If you’ve decided weighted feeds are something you’d like to try out for your own family, I’ve rounded up some of the best baby scales for breastfeeding. They are all available on Amazon, because who has time to go to the store these days?

Baby Scale Buying Guide: What to Consider When Buying a Baby Scale for Breastfeeding

If you’re not sure what the best option is for you, here are a few features I think you should consider when shopping:

  • Ease of Use -Along with accuracy, this is probably the most important feature to consider. These days, pretty much all of them are digital baby scales, which is good news for ease of use! But you’ll also want to consider whether you need to tare the scale, whether it will work with wigglers, etc.
  • Cost – Most of the baby scales on our list are around the same price range. If you’re price sensitive, you could save a bit by going with the cheapest baby scale. Otherwise I recommend buying based on value and reviews, instead of price.
  • Accuracy – Home baby scales are never going to be as accurate as the ones you find at your paediatricians office. But you can get pretty close. Consider whether the scale has an easy to use tare function to calibrate as needed.
  • Portability – Some days, you might need to change where you do your weigh in. If you foresee this being a possibility, look for a scale that is portable.
  • Weight Limit – Many baby scales tap out at a relatively low maximum weight limit – somewhere between 40 and 60 pounds. That’s fine for weighing your baby and toddler, but won’t be much use beyond that. If you’d like something that will last through the years, the Mommed Scale goes up to 220 lbs. It can be used as a household scale once your little one is a bit older.

Final Thoughts

Our pick is the GreaterGoods Smart Baby Scale. We love that it has both a baby and toddler function, and the smart syncing feature. A close runner up is the Health o Meter Grow With Me Scale. The MomMed product can grow into a general household scale in the future, which we love. If you have the budget, the Hatch Baby Changing Pad and Scale will make your life easier. And if you’re on a budget, the Salter scale gives great bang for buck in our opinion.

So you want to know more about weighted feedings and their important during lactation consult.

— Breastfeeding Center for Greater Washington

During a visit with one of our IBCLCs (Lactation Consultants), they will weigh your baby, possibly several times. Your consultant is doing a lot more than just accounting for your baby’s weight. They are monitoring your little one's milk intake. Our scales are very accurate, and can account for the change in baby’s weight before and after a feeding, which indicates milk intake. It should be noted that babies do intake different amounts during different feedings, you may be asked to perform weighted feeds at home by your provider. Weighted feeds are one of many tools your IBCLC may use to assess your baby - your consultant will also check for overall weight gain, effective latch, diaper count, stools color changes, feeding patterns and more.

What exactly is a “weighted feed”?

Weighted feeding is performed by measuring your baby pre and post feeding. The goal of the weighted feeding is to determine how much breastmilk your baby takes during one breastfeeding session. The baby will be weighed in a clean, dry diaper to ensure accuracy in the event that they void or stool during the feeding. Your Lactation Consultant can help interpret and understand the results of the weighted and provide recommendations accordingly to help you meet your feeding goals and ensure that you have a happy, healthy and growing baby.

Not all baby scales are created equal.

A typical baby scale that you might have at home is great to track overall weight gain from day to day or over the weeks.  However, these scales do not provide a measurement that is accurate enough to do weighted feedings.  The scales we use at The Breastfeeding Center measure precisely to 2- gram increments, and will give a correct measurement of how much milk your baby takes during a feeding.

Weighted Feeding at The Center

Here at The Breastfeeding Center, we offer free, one-hour appointments for you to come in and do weighted feeding in our classroom space. This appointment is a solo weighted feed; make sure to consult an IBCLC before/ after the weighted feeding with any questions. You can book an appointment to reserve your weighted feeding space and time here. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to call or text our office at 202.293.5182 to get in touch with one of our administrative staff who is happy to assist!

The general process for conducting a weighted feeding consists of:

  1. Your first step is to place the scale on a firm, flat, and most importantly stable surface. This placement is essential to get an accurate measurement of your baby while also ensuring your babies safety during the weighing process

  2. The next step is to push in the tray locking lever and plug your scale into the wall.

  3. Undress the baby down to a diaper to get the most accurate reading during the entire process.

  4. Then, you want to turn the scale on by pressing the “ON” button and waiting until the number “0” is displayed on the LCD screen. On the Medela Babyscale II, the ON button can be located to the right of the LCD screen.

  5. If you plan on adding the extra weight of a pad, blanket, or other buffers between your baby and the scale, make sure to zero out the machine. You will do this by pressing the “TARE/ZERO” button on the scale. This button can be located above the “ON” button.

  6. Place your baby on the scale. Make sure to hold your hand over the baby (not on your baby) in case of any movement. Wait until the scale beeps or you see the arrow appear over the lock section of the LCD screen. This lock arrow can be located in the left-hand corner of the LCD screen.

  7. Store the weight in the scale memory by pressing the 1 button or the “BEFORE FEED” button. This button is to the right of the “ON” button. You can also keep a weight journal of your baby on your phone by taking a picture or writing it down.

  8. The most important step is to take your baby off the scale and feed!

  9. Next, prepare the scale for the second weight by pressing the reset button to make sure the scale is zeroed out again.

  10. Weigh your fed baby and wait for your baby’s weight to stabilize. Wait until the scale beeps or you see the arrow appear over the lock section of the LCD screen. This can be located in the left-hand corner of the LCD screen.

  11. Then, Press 2 to score the post-feed weight. The 2 button is located next to the 1 button. This would also be the time to add this to your weight journal or take a picture with your phone.

  12. Remove your baby from the scale

  13. Press 3/AMOUNT FED to calculate the breastmilk intake, or find the difference between the weights

  14. Press the OFF button to turn off the scale, the last set of weights will remain in the scale’s memory.

How to choose a baby scale for newborns?

December 10, 2017

A baby scale is essential in the home when a baby is born. The child needs to be weighed every day to know if he is eating enough. After all, how much the child is recovering can determine whether everything is in order with the baby. When choosing children's scales, we proceed from the fact that our baby should have only the best - including scales. To do this, first of all, you must decide - what functions should be present in the scales?

A wide variety of electronic baby scales are now available. Electronic baby scales are more accurate, and most importantly, the most convenient to use. The accuracy of the scales when weighing is from 2g to 20g. Scales are very convenient in that when weighing, there is no need to completely undress the child, because. The scale does not take into account the weight of the diaper. There are scales with which you can measure not only weight, but also height.

If for some reason you have forgotten the previous weight of the child, you can quickly view the previous value using the built-in memory of the scale.

More professional and more expensive scales can accurately measure the weight even if the baby is fidgeting. In addition, you do not have to calculate how much your baby has recovered. The scales will do everything for you.

The first year of life is very important for the overall development of the child, and weight is one of its main indicators. If the baby was born on time and with a normal weight, eats well and looks healthy, then it must be weighed at least once a month. But when a baby was born prematurely or eats poorly, then it needs to be weighed almost every day. Also, daily weighing helps to evaluate the effectiveness of breastfeeding.

For weighing newborns and children under the age of one, special scales are used, which can be seen in the office of any pediatrician. But what are the criteria for choosing a scale for home use?

Infant scales are mechanical and electronic. Both mechanical and electronic scales are equipped with a special oblong bowl or tray in which the baby is placed when weighing. This is where their similarities end. Let's take a closer look at the advantages and disadvantages of each type of scale, as well as their main differences.

Mechanical baby scales are quite accurate, but still, weighing on them is difficult because you need to have experience with weights, with which the weight is determined. In addition, on mechanical scales, weight is not accurately determined if the baby moves. The mechanical scales themselves are quite heavy and bulky. Their positive characteristics include autonomy from the power source, durability and reliability in operation, as well as lower cost, in comparison with electronic scales. The maximum weight for which mechanical scales are designed is 20 kg. The price for mechanical scales varies from $50 to $100.

Electronic baby scales offer a number of advantages over mechanical scales. They are multifunctional, accurate and easy to use. Weighing is very fast, and the result is displayed on the electronic display. Almost all models of electronic scales have the ability to fix the weight. That is, the weight of the baby is determined accurately, even if the child does not lie still. The memory function makes it possible to save weighing results for several days. This will help you analyze the dynamics of changes in the child's weight.

The main disadvantages of electronic scales are that their operation requires a power source - a battery or an electrical network. Electronic scales are not resistant to sudden voltage drops and high humidity. The cost of electronic scales, depending on the functionality and the manufacturer, ranges from 50 to 200 USD.

When choosing a balance, give preference to a balance with a metal case, they are more durable. But the pallet should be plastic and roomy enough so that the baby can easily fit there. Pay attention to the legs of the case. They must be rubber to prevent possible slipping. If you want to monitor not only the weight of the child, but also his height, you can purchase a scale with a device for measuring height. There are models of scales designed not only for babies, but also for older children. These scales will serve you much longer. It is enough to remove the pallet, and they will turn into children's floor scales.

When purchasing, be sure to read the instruction manual. It should indicate the maximum error of the scales, the maximum weight for which the scales you have chosen are designed, and from which power source they operate. It is good when the scales provide for operation, both from batteries and from the mains. Do not forget to ask the seller about the warranty period and possible service.
