Now, this is the perfect theme to add in a little bit of rustic charm to soften the yellow and black theme. Some softer shades of beiges and browns help to create more of a rustic Honeybee Baby Shower vibe.

Linen or hessian makes a great table covering or backdrop and works beautifully alongside shades of yellow.

My favorite Bee décor ideas include:

  • Balloon arch in shades of yellow and black
  • Also add hessian bunting
  • Add touches of gold for glamour
  • Any hexagonal décor works great
  • Jars of yellow and white flowers
  • Meanwhile, add sunflowers, daisies, and greenery with leafy sprigs

Continue the honey theme into the food options but in a stylish way. A beautiful cheese and meat platter is my favorite, with honey included as one of the condiments.

If you want to make your own cake, a classic Honey Cake is a must. This gorgeous recipe is for the most decadent Russian Honey cake complete with 8 mouth-watering layers.

Baby Shower Games

What’s in the Bee Hive?

For this easy DIY shower game, first, find a hexagon-shaped cardboard box. Then use a black marker to draw little bees on it to create your “beehive”. Next, fill the beehive with 8 to 10 baby goodies like a bottle, onesie, diaper cream, and hairbrush. Guests should take it in turns to try to identify as many items inside as they can by touch only, (no looking) and write them down. When everyone has had a turn, compare lists to see who identified the most correctly. When the game is done, the Mama to be leaves with all of the goodies.

How big is Mommy’s tummy?

Test your guests’ estimating skills with this fun guessing game. First, using string, ribbon, or even toilet paper, have each shower guest guestimate the circumference of the expectant mom’s baby bump and cut a piece of the string (or ribbon or toilet paper) that will wrap around her belly. Then, whoever gets the closest wins.

Florals!

Anything floral works beautifully for this theme. Depending on the time of year, floral dresses are my favorite option.

Of course, you could even go one step further and suggest flower headbands. Check out our easy tutorial here.

Bored with stripes?  To mix it up a little by using chevron or polka dots; as long as you have the needed yellow and black, the theme will blend just fine.

The following decoration ideas are must-haves for any bumble bee baby shower.  In addition, you can add to the color scheme with balloons, streamers, tableware, and banners.

  • Bumble bees – The star critter should be everywhere you would find a bumble bee; flying up high, on walls, on flowers and so on.  Bumble bees are the most necessary decoration to have all around, and they are rather easy to make if you don’t like the store-bought ones.

  • Flowers – Bumble bees help to pollinate flowers, so it’s no surprise that your baby shower should contain some here and there.  Get crafty and make some flowers, or even buy fresh flowers and decorate the vases to suit the theme.

  • Beehive –  Whether you decide to have the cake resemble a beehive, or have one hanging up somewhere, bumble bees need their home, the beehive.  You can get creative and make one with paper mache, or find one in a store.

Food

Stuffing your face is one of the best parts about a baby shower, so it better have some good food there.  It doesn’t sting to have a few sweets because this is one of the few occasions we can eat shamelessly and have a good excuse!

Here are a few bumble bee inspired food ideas to get you started:

  • Twinkie bees – Who doesn’t love a good Twinkie?  Give the Twinkies one buzzin’ personality by giving them stripes, eyes, wings and antennae!

  • Beehive cupcakes –  Cupcakes can be frosted to look like a beehive is on top, add a couple of bees and viola!

  • Honey Sticks – Everyone loves a bit of honey now and then, so why not have a cup full of honey sticks on the table?  They even make many different flavored honey sticks now!

  • Bee deviled eggs – Decorate the yolk filling to look like a little bumble bee, it will resemble a baby bumble bee in a swaddle, how cute!

Games

Games are a staple for every baby shower and it’s the part that many look forward to.  Sure, you can have the typical baby shower games that a lot of people have likely played a few times in the past, but wouldn’t it be better to switch it up?  With these bumble bee baby shower games; time is likely to fly right by!

  • The bees knees – Everyone has to take a balloon and put it between their knees, and they have to find some way to pop it without using their hands.  The mama-to-bee will sit back and watch the entertaining antics of her guests!

  • Pin the bumble bee on the flower – This is a spin off of the traditional pin the tail on the donkey game.  Whoever gets closest to the center of the flower wins this cute game!

  • Build-a-bee contest –  This is a fun craft game to keep all of the baby bees “buzzy” while the adults are busy with the baby shower.  Set up a craft station, or even use food (Twinkies!) and candy and let the kids have fun making their little critters.  Take votes for the winner or have the queen bee herself decide!

Favors

Give your guests something to take home that will remind them of the buzzin’ good time they had!  Something as sweet as honey would be very suitable, how about little jars of local honey?  You can easily dress them up in the yellow and black cuteness!  If you want to go the more traditional route, sweets such as candy and cookies are always a winner!  Whatever you decide on, it will bee perfect!

Nikolai Lysenko from Kazachok, Starooskolsky district, took up beekeeping

A beekeeper from Kazachok Nikolay Lysenko devoted himself to cooperation with amazing insects. You can’t just enter his apiary - at the entrance a fox jumped out to meet us! We decided not to be surprised: since the owner copes with so many bees, he can definitely come to an agreement with the fox. While looking around, the cheat was put on a leash, and upon closer inspection it turned out to be an ordinary husky. Here is the master of disguise!

After the city's baking, the air in the apiary does not want to be inhaled - to eat, to enjoy. It is filled with magical aromas of herbs, and also with the friendly buzz of bees - and this is a little unnerving ... The hospitable host hurried to equip us with hats with a protective net. It became calmer in my soul, and we started talking.

Aleksey checking a beehive with wild bees

Photo: Evgeny Gorozhankin

— How long have you been doing beekeeping?

— Since childhood. When I was a toddler in short pants, I walked between the hives, and the bees never bit me. Mom and dad, of course, did not keep a large apiary. They worked, and to seriously engage in beekeeping, you need a lot of free time. I watched how they work in the apiary, and wound everything on my mustache. And when he grew up, he began to try to run a bee farm with his brother. I used to work as an electrician. When the pension came, he became sad and thought about how to have fun. Here, I thought! Now I have about 150 bee colonies. A good helper is the grandson Aleksey , the fourth generation of beekeepers . Bees are great for both the soul and the body, and a little bit for financial well-being.

— Why did you decide to become a beekeeper?

— Our governor wants to revive the population of wild bees in the Belgorod region. And this is great, I completely agree with him, even though beekeeping is a very troublesome task for a beekeeper. Wild bees give less honey, but it is more useful. In ordinary hives, we put artificial foundation, there are cells of a certain size - 6 mm . Wild bees themselves build combs in the sides, the cells are made a little smaller, so the structure of honey is different. And when we remove honey from the board, we do not use a honey extractor. This means that it does not oxidize, does not come into contact with the metal. And we disturb the bees only once a year. All this is reflected in the quality of honey. I have boards in the forest, made in the old fashioned way - hollowed out of wood. But there are also ordinary ones. We install them high on trees. Wild bees settle themselves, build honeycombs themselves, work themselves. They are generally very independent beings. They don't even need to be treated - they heal themselves. In vain we do not disturb them, only in the fall, once a year .

— Do bees know their master?

- I think so. Sometimes I sit and mind my own business. And then the bees start flying around me, poke as if they want to bite, but do not bite - they attract attention. I think something is wrong here. I see: the water in the drinker is over! Well, don’t fly them to a neighbor - I’m going to pour. They know that water is my job. They also remember the offender. I had a case sometime in the spring. Before the start of the season, I checked the condition of the hives, pulled out the frame and dropped it. The frame crushed several bees. They remembered the whole summer, as soon as I approached this hive, they began to buzz like that unfriendly. And only this one hive!

— What is your favorite dish with honey?

Fritters! During the first pitching at home, be sure to fry them. And my mother always did that. Pancakes with first honey - gorgeous!

- I understand that there is definitely no free time in the summer. Working day from March to October-November. But in winter? From November to March, can you be lazy and lie around?

- No! At this time, maintenance of nurses is underway: we make frames, melt wax, repair beehives, and a tractor. After all, what advantage does my apiary have? She is nomadic! We move from place to place over summer three or four times . Where the honey plants bloom. There was acacia, now linden is starting, then buckwheat is also very good, sunflower, sweet clover, herbs. To have an assortment! But the quality of honey depends not only on flowers. In many ways, both from the owner and from the bees. My favorite hard worker is the Central Russian bee. She's mean, biting. But honey carries and processes in such a way that no other honey can be compared with it. This bee transfers it 10–20 times from cell to cell. And during the shifting, it introduces its own enzymes, unlike incubator ones. They carry a lot of honey, but they are not so scrupulous, or something, and the honey is not of such high quality.

— Do you have a hobby? How are you resting?

- I have a plot - 35 acres . Gorgeous garden and vineyard. As they say, with whom you behave, you will gain. Looking at the bees, I don’t understand how you can just lie there and do nothing.

- Do you ever leave Kazachok for a week or two to relax, unwind? Then who do you miss?

- I really miss my family, my home. I am generally a homebody by nature. Somehow he went to Stary Oskol, built himself a cottage. And you know what? I could not live there, I sold it and returned to my homeland, to my parents' house!

- You now have a good assistant - your grandson Alexei. It is clear that since childhood he has watched how you work with bees. Would you like him to do it professionally?

- Of course. And not only the grandson! I have many friends who also work with bees. They are hard workers, and I respect people who work.

- What do bees like and don't like? They say that if they use perfume before coming to the apiary, they won't like it?

- Cologne was originally designed to appeal to French women. The bees definitely don't like it. They generally do not like pungent odors: perfume, garlic, alcohol. It’s better not to show up in the apiary with the last ambergris - they will bite, neither the mask nor the suit will save! Still do not like sudden movements.

— How do they feel about you taking honey from them? Do they not take revenge on you later?

- Depends on when to pick up. If at the beginning of the season, then they will not be satisfied for sure. They already have little food, and you also organize robbery in broad daylight. But when the hives are filled, sealed, then - please take them, they will only be happy, because they need to work, but there is nowhere to work.

- Tell me, how to make the bees settle in the hive?

- Well, it's like people. For example, a young family was formed. And they were offered a small, one-room, but their own apartment. Refuse? I think no. So it is with bees. Of course, first you need to lure. Put a propolis mat, a piece of wax. First, scouts fly in, sniffing everything, inspecting. Then they return to the family, and the swarm, trusting the scout, flies for permanent residence to a specific hive.

- Does it happen that a bee gets lost and does not fly to its own hive and not even to its owner? And then what is war?

- It happens when a hurricane hits, unexpected rain, a tornado. Bees for honey fly away to 5–7 km . And if they understand that they do not have time to get to themselves, and an apiary meets on the way, then they fly into the first hive they come across and they are accepted. They unload there and fly away! But if just on a fine day, an outside bee mate flies up to the hive and wants to get in there, then it won’t seem enough. There are beehives nearby, but their inhabitants do not visit each other.

So, to the optimistic buzzing of bees and the singing of birds, we walked around the apiary of Nikolai Grigorievich. At some point, you get used to this incessant rumble, you get bolder, the mesh hat starts to interfere, you bravely take it off, but it turns out that the bees don’t care: I’m not a bear, I don’t take honey. And you feel such unity with the real, with nature!

- They say pets look like their owners. What do you have in common with bees?

- I have a technical education, I love the system in everything. And the bee family lives strictly, like an army, it has its own hierarchy. There is a watchdog service, a queen protection service, a drinking water delivery service, nurse bees, a queen retinue, and a worker bee.

… It's time to say goodbye. Before leaving, we noticed a small swarm at the drinking bowl of striped workers. Before our eyes, a new cell of the bee society was born, which means there will be honey!

How to calculate the children's birthday menu?

Children's holiday menu should be calculated based on the number of people. Everything related to main courses, desserts and snacks should be taken according to the number of children - 1 serving / 1 child. There is no need to save on water and drinks, as children actively play, run and have fun between meals.

Calculating a fruit plate for everyone is very simple. Do not take a lot of different fruits. It will be enough for a couple of species at the rate of 300-400 grams of fruit for each guest.

You shouldn't order a lot of snacks either - about 100 grams per person. Children will also have a main course, and if they are full of snacks, they will not want to eat hot.
