Nothing pulls at your heart strings more than your baby crying uncontrollably. If the cause of their tears is colic, gas, or acid reflux, you may be at a loss about how to help them. Seeing your little one in pain can be so stressful (and exhausting) you probably feel like you’ll do anything to stop the problem.

Luckily, if your baby is bottle-fed, there are some products that claim they can help! Anti-colic bottles are a real thing, and we’re here to explain what they are and how they work. We’ll share our favorite anti-colic bottles, just in case you need help determining which ones to try.

Colic has been medically defined as an otherwise healthy baby crying for 3 or more hours a day, 3 or more days a week, for at least 3 weeks. It tends to appear in a baby’s first 3 to 6 weeks of life.

Colic is a temporary health condition, that should hopefully improve on its own with time, but the American Academy of Pediatricians says 20 percent of all babies develop it. (So, you’re not alone!)

Colic can appear suddenly. There is no known cause of colic, but it could be triggered by:

  • hunger
  • acid reflux
  • gas
  • overfeeding
  • the presence of cow milk proteins in breast milk
  • reaction to specific type of formula
  • an underdeveloped nervous system

One of the common ways babies get gas in their digestive system is by swallowing air, particularly during feeds. Colicky babies also have the extra problem that they may swallow air when they are continuously crying, which can cause a vicious cycle.

A bottle labeled as anti-colic is designed to reduce air swallowed during feeds, lessen gas bubbles in the stomach, and slow down food intake. This has the potential to reduce any colicky crying related to gas and overfeeding.

So, just how does an anti-colic bottle reduce swallowed air? They may have:

  • a variety of nipple flow options to help get milk flowing at just the right speed
  • bottle nipples designed to lessen the chance of air in the tip
  • valve systems to ensure your bottle doesn’t turn into an air vacuum
  • an angled shape to help keep baby more upright while feeding
  • optional vent systems to keep air from traveling through the milk, creating more bubbles

Anyone can use an anti-colic bottle! They will typically be most beneficial to babies who seem upset after feeds and have a lot of gas, but there’s certainly no harm in using them even with a baby who does not seem to have these issues.

When determining which anti-colic bottles made the cut, we considered their special features, cost, and what parents had to say about them. After all, there’s no one more brutally honest about the flow, ease of cleaning, and actual effectiveness than a fellow parent trying to soothe a fussy baby!

Pricing guide

  • $ = under $5 per bottle
  • $$ = $5–$10 per bottle
  • $$$ = over $10 per bottle

Best overall

anti-colic bottle

Philips Avent Anti-Colic Bottle

Price: $$

Babies are very different in which brand of bottle offers the perfect fit to decrease air intake, so we could honestly name almost any of the bottles listed below as “best overall.” That said, Avent bottles check a lot of the boxes parents for parents struggling with colicky babies.

Meant to reduce colic and discomfort from gas, they are designed to be easy to hold and have nipples structured to prevent collapsing. These bottles are also a cinch to clean, because they only include four parts and have a wide neck!

Best anti-colic venting system

Dr. Brown's Natural Flow Original Baby Bottle

Price: $

Parents love this bottle and its famous venting system, which reduces air bubbles in milk. Fewer air bubbles also mean less oxidation of nutrients, so the milk may retain more vitamins A, C, and E.

With this bottle there are also a wide range of nipple flow options available, so you won’t run into problems if your baby is a preemie or older and sucking strongly.

Downsides? All the parts you’ll need to clean (this tends to be a problem with most bottles that include venting systems though). There are also more pieces to assemble, which can make this a tricky bottle for friends and relatives to put together in your absence.

Best

anti-colic bottle for breastfed babies

Comotomo Baby Bottle (5 oz.)

Price: $$$

Specifically designed to resemble breastfeeding as closely as possible, this bottle has a soft silicone body easy for a baby to grab like a breast. It is also easy to clean due to its wide neck and minimal parts.

Optional handles can be used for self-feeding when your baby is ready, and the true slow-flow nipple — intended for ages newborn for 3 months — only has one hole.

Downsides? You’ll want to really double-check how the lid is screwed on, since it’s been known to leak. The soft base also tends to tip over, since it’s not as stable. Additionally, it can be hard to tell exactly how much formula or milk is in the bottle because the volume markers are hard to see.

Best

anti-colic bottle for gas

NUK Simply Natural Baby Bottle

Price: $

At a budget-minded price point, this bottle is also good for breastfed babies. The slow-flow nipple on the 5-ounce size is designed with multiple holes to closely mimic how milk comes out of a breast.

The built-in anti-colic air system means you won’t have to clean as many parts, which is always a nice bonus!

Best

anti-colic bottle for reflux

Playtex Baby VentAire Bottle

Price: $$$

This bottle’s bottom includes micro-vents that allow air in while the baby is drinking, which prevents the bottle from becoming a vacuum. The angled bottle shape also helps with upright feeding positions. And did we mention the raised texture on the nipple may encourage easier latching?

One thing to note is that if you plan to use a bottle warmer, this isn’t a great bottle shape. Some parents also worried that the flow of milk might be too fast with this bottle, so be sure to select the slow-flow version if that’s a concern.

Best

anti-colic bottle for newborns

nanobébé Breastmilk Bottle

Price: $

You can use this bottle to pump, store, warm, and feed. These bottles are stackable for efficient storage, and the brand carries a breast pump adaptor to make life even easier.

The nipple has a double vent system to reduce air pressure, and it cools milk quickly to help prevent bacterial growth. The small size also works well for small hands!

Some parents found the bottle hard to close and as your baby grows, the compact size of the bottle may mean it won’t hold enough milk for a full feed. For a newborn, though, this shouldn’t be a problem.

Best

anti-colic bottle for upright feeding

Tommee Tippee Closer to Nature Baby Bottle

Price: $

You can hold this bottle in three different ways, so you can position and grip however is the easiest while you support your baby in an upright position. The nipple is flexible and moves in ways that resemble a breast’s nipple.

This bottle is not dishwasher safe, and it can leak if the flow is too fast for your baby. Many parents actually mentioned the flow might be too slow for their baby. So, you’ll want to make sure that you use the right size nipple to prevent these issues.

Easiest

anti-colic bottle to clean

MAM Easy Start Anti-Colic Bottle

Price: $$

This bottle can self-sterilize in the microwave in just 3 minutes! Parents also really enjoy the flat nipple that fits well into babies’ mouths, making it easier to go back and forth between bottle and breastfeeding.

You’ll want to keep an eye out for the nipple size that comes with the bottle you order. Many MAM bottles come with medium flow nipples, and you’ll need to order slow flow nipples separately.

If your baby is spending lots of their day crying or showing distress after feeds, they may have acid reflux, gas, or even the dreaded colic.

Before feeling helpless, try switching their bottle to one that is anti-colic in design. This way they will hopefully ingest less air and eat in a way that lends itself to a settled stomach.

Always check with your child’s doctor if you think there are any medical issues. You may have to test out a few bottles, but don’t give up hope! Colic will resolve in time, and maybe you’ll find a bottle that helps your little one sooner than later.

The Best Bottles for Babies With Colic

    Sometimes, babies experience prolonged periods of discomfort, and it can leave parents baffled. This is true whether someone is a first-time or seasoned parent and no two children are alike. So what happens when an infant’s needs have been met and they are still crying for hours at a time? If baby is curling up their legs, crying around the same time of day, and appearing to be in pain, it could point to colic

    The root cause of colic can vary. For example, colic could be caused by digestive issues, milk sensitivity, overstimulation, and more. In the case of first-time mother Katrina Johnson, she noticed something was wrong within the first couple of weeks of her son’s life. “He always seemed uncomfortable or in pain, especially after feeding, and wouldn’t sleep longer than an hour,” Johnson said. She later discovered he has infant acid reflux and began trying different “anti-colic” bottles to ease his digestive pains.

    While there are many bottles geared toward easing colic, they have different features. Here are our top picks for the best bottles to help with colic.

    This bottle is highly recommended by pediatricians. It features a vent system that allows the milk to flow more easily to the baby without any interruptions. For Johnson, this bottle is the one she trusts to use for her son. She has noticed a reduction in painful gas and overall discomfort after her son’s feedings, which is a plus for her.

    This is a bottle I can personally attest to using. My son also suffered from indigestion along with chronic constipation. After discovering he has a dairy protein allergy, I began researching which bottle would work for him. The great thing about this bottle is that it also features a vent system that is designed to allow the baby to have more access to milk than air. This is great for babies who simultaneously experience frequent hiccups.

    While this bottle is not classified as “anti-colic,” it still works well because it lives up to its name. The nipple itself is similar to a mother’s breast and creates a more comfortable feeding session for babies. It also features an indicator that lets you know when the milk is too hot for babies to drink.

    This is a bottle system that my sister used for her children and recommended that I use for my son. While I found he prefers his Philips Avent bottle more than anything, the built-in anti-colic valve still reduced his indigestion and trapped gas issues. It is also designed to be similar to a mother’s breast, although in our opinion, the NUK Simply Natural Baby Bottles do a better job in that category.

    Neela Sethi, MD, a pediatrician at Valencia Pediatric Associates and a MAM Baby Ambassador shared with me that MAM’s Anti-Colic bottles feature valves that reduce air bubbles and prevents infants from swallowing air. Plus, the nipple is flat which lowers the chance the baby will bite it. They are meant to produce familiarity in babies by being similar to moms’ nipples during breastfeeding.

    Again, no two babies are alike and a product that works for one mom might not work for you. When it comes to trying out different bottles, consider the bottle box offering by Babylist. It includes five bottles to try from: nanobébé, Comotomo, NUK, Dr. Brown’s, and Olababy (two from our recommended list above!). It’s another option so you can see what really works for you and your baby.

    Regardless of which brand you find works best for your baby, the key is ensuring that the baby is comfortable during and after feedings. Although it can be hard not to feel frustrated or panicked, colic generally improves and goes away over time. If, at any time, you feel concerned about your baby’s digestion discomfort, always check with their pediatrician for a proper diagnosis.

    1. "Nuk First Choice"

    The top spot was given to the "Nuk First Choise" bottle, for its three main wonderful qualities - versatility, health benefits for the baby and durability. The bottle itself is made of wear-resistant plastic, which is difficult to scratch. In addition, it will not change its color even after a long period of use. The nipple that comes with the kit is made of soft and flexible silicone and does not let air through, so the risk of colic in the baby is minimal. If desired, you can additionally purchase other types of nipples that fit the bottle: there are six different types. nine0003

    ✅ Advantages of the feeding bottle:

    • High-quality and healthy raw material used for the manufacture of nipples and bottles;
    • Ergonomic and comfortable teat shape;
    • Versatility;
    • Clear and indelible gradation on the bottle.

    ❗ Warning:

    • A number of mums have complained that the lid is not tight and the bottle may leak.

    2. “Dr. Brown's

    Dr. Brown's anti-colic feeding bottle is the best of the bunch and has a patented ventilation system designed to prevent your baby from swallowing air bubbles. This means that when using this bottle, the child is not afraid of colic. In addition, since air never mixes with milk, your baby is still getting the necessary vitamins: A, C and E-groups. The nipple in appearance resembles a female breast, so the transition to artificial feeding will be painless for the baby. nine0003

    ✅ Feeding bottle benefits:

    • Does not contain harmful materials;
    • Prevents air in the bottle from being swallowed;
    • Reduces the risk of baby colic many times over.

    ❗Worth noting:

    • Complicated cleaning system: even a special mini-brush is provided for this, however, it is not very convenient to use;
    • Graduation of the scale on the bottle is hardly visible. nine0134

    Parent Review : These bottles are so nice and easy to use! I couldn't breastfeed, but I still wanted to breastfeed my baby. For this purpose, I used these bottles: my daughter adapted immediately, without any problems.

    3. Philips Avent Natural

    The most talked about and famous feeding bottle among Russian mothers. The Avent Natural design features an anti-colic valve that returns air back into the bottle. The feeding bottle is quite ergonomic, making it easy to clean and assemble. The appearance and shape of the nipples are suitable for both newborns and older babies. The safety of the goods has been verified by repeated tests of well-known medical organizations, and the products themselves are widely distributed in the CIS and can be bought at almost any pharmacy. nine0003

    ✅ Advantages of feeding bottle:

    • Good wear resistance;
    • Available for purchase;
    • Fully compatible with the company's baby products: sterilizers, drinking cups and other products for babies;
    • Easy to clean and assemble.

    ❗Worth noting:

    • There have been complaints in the reviews about the operation of the valve to prevent air from entering the food: it can malfunction.

    4. Comotomo Natural Feel Baby Bottle

    One of the best bottles for the current year: in many tops, it takes first place. Like most other modern feeding devices, this bottle is equipped with a special valve to cut off air from the milk formula, and the shape of the nipple imitates the appearance of the breast, for the baby to get used to the nipple more quickly.

    The main advantage of the bottle is the material from which it is made: its soft walls will allow the bottle to shrink, which will help regulate the rate of milk flow. Unfortunately, the bottle itself and its accessories are quite expensive, and there are not much more advantages than cheaper analogues of competitors, so only the fourth place. nine0003

    ✅ Advantages of the feeding bottle:

    • Only materials that are safe for health are used;
    • Good wear resistance;
    • The presence of a valve for bleeding air.

    ❗ Warning:

    • High price.

    5. "Tommee Tippee"

    This fluffy bottle is light and comfortable in the hands, making it easier for the baby to feed. It is made of safe polypropylene and equipped with a well-thought-out air bleed system. An additional plus is the shape of the nipple that comes with the kit: it is very convenient for feeding and milk almost never spills. nine0003

    ✅ Advantages of the feeding bottle:

    • Sophisticated air valve system;
    • Easy to clean and easy to assemble;
    • Ergonomic pacifier shape.

    ❗Worth noting:

    • Some mothers have complained about the nipple designed for feeding newborns: they say the milk supply is too fast and in large quantities.

    6. Munchkin Latch

    The main advantage of the bottle is the teats that come with it. The developers of the product have made a really thoughtful shape, which greatly facilitates the feeding of the child. In addition, it ensures proper grip during feeding, so the outside air, along with the mixture, does not enter the baby's stomach. There is also an air release valve inside the bottle. The shape of the bottle correctly distributes the pressure inside the structure, so that the feeding process is almost 100% imitation of breastfeeding. nine0003

    ✅ Advantages of the feeding bottle:

    • Ergonomic and comfortable teat shape;
    • All components are made from raw materials that are safe for the health of the baby;
    • The presence of a valve for bleeding air.

    ❗ Warning:

    • When the bottle is heated in a water bath, milk flows out of the bottle.

    7. "CHICCO Nature Glass" glass bottle

    The seventh place was taken by the products of the Italian company. Compared with similar products from competitors, it is more ergonomic and of high quality workmanship. The bottle is made of strong glass, besides, it retains the internal temperature for a long time. Latex was chosen as the material for the pacifier, and its shape facilitates the feeding process as much as possible. nine0003

    ✅ Advantages of the feeding bottle:

    • The bottle is able to keep the temperature of the milk poured into it for a long time;
    • Glass is strong and impact resistant;
    • The teat is ergonomically shaped and made of first-class latex.

    ❗ Warning:

    • Fairly expensive;
    • Non-standard large bottle volume and weight;
    • Obscure scale gradation.

    8. Pigeon

    Made by Japanese craftsmen, this feeding bottle has an unusual shape of a nipple and it got into our list precisely because of its specific application. Since a silicone spoon is used instead of the usual type of nipple, it is suitable for those mothers who want to teach their child to eat from a spoon as quickly as possible. Liquid food is delivered to it by simply pressing the bottom of the bottle.

    ✅ Feeding bottle benefits:

    • Made in Japan;
    • Low price; nine0134
    • Rich starter kit;
    • For those who want to teach their child to eat from a spoon.

    ❗ Warning:

    • Specific use.

    9. Playtex Baby Nurser

    Another interesting product we have chosen because of the unique way of filling the bottle with formula. It is not poured directly into the bottle, but into special disposable bags. This provides several undeniable advantages. Firstly, after filling the bag with milk, you can bleed excess air from it, and secondly, the bottle itself is very easy to clean. The quality of the materials used for the bottle pacifier is also beyond praise. However, in our market it is quite difficult to get bags for pouring milk, and they also cost a lot of money. Because of these nuances, only ninth place. nine0003

    ✅ Feeding bottle benefits:

    • Innovative feeding bottle filling system;
    • Components are made from materials that are safe for health;
    • Easy to clean.

    ❗ What to warn about:

    • Rare and expensive consumables.

    10. Canpol Babies (glass)

    The best budget feeding bottle available today. The gradation of the scale is clearly visible on it, the glass is durable and impact-resistant. The nipple is made of silicone and provides a slow flow of formula. Given the price of the product, this is the best purchase option among inexpensive bottles: cheap and cheerful. nine0003

    ✅ Advantages of the feeding bottle:

    • Low price;
    • Good quality;
    • Impact and tough glass;
    • Only materials that are safe for health are used.

    ❗ Warning:

    • No air bleed valves.

    What else to consider when choosing feeding bottles?

    The first is the material from which the bottle and its accessories are made. They must not contain harmful substances. The second is the volume and shape of the bottle. The third factor is the availability and workmanship of additional accessories and their availability on the market. Our top includes the best models leading in the polls in these three positions. nine0003

    Top 11 newborn bottles in 2023

    It's obvious that a feeding bottle is a must for artificial babies. But it turns out that it can also be useful for breastfed children if the mother needs to leave the house, take expressed milk with her for a walk or give the baby water to drink, for example. Or undergo a course of antibiotic treatment that excludes breastfeeding. The bottle will become an indispensable assistant even if the baby refuses to take his mother's breast. nine0003

    Even 30 years ago, the choice of dishes for newborns was scarce. Now the shelves of pharmacies and children's stores are literally littered with a variety of bottles and nipples. How can you make a choice that you won't regret? How many bottles to buy? To clarify these issues, as usual, our advice and the constant annual rating of the best products will help. In this case, let's talk about bottles.

  • Everything you need to know about bottle feeding your newborn

    Bottle material

    Bottles are made of glass and plastic. The first material is not afraid of heating, does not react with food and does not emit toxic substances, and has a long service life. The inscriptions and the measuring scale applied to the glassware will not be erased over time. However, the glass breaks. For this reason, it is not recommended to leave the baby alone during bottle feeding. He can drop it and get hurt, given the fact that glassware is harder for a baby to hold than plastic. nine0003

    The second option is polypropylene. It is lightweight, unbreakable and safe. Although budget models of bottles may contain harmful impurities. Among other shortcomings - plastic quickly loses its presentation. It scratches, stains if aggressive coloring substances are present in the food, retains the smells of food. Not all plastic utensils can withstand heat, let alone boiling.

    Bottle size and shape

    Curved bottles are more ergonomic. They are comfortable to hold and do not need to be turned upside down to extract milk residues. nine0003

    Small, wide 100-150 ml bottles are best for newborns. This amount of food is enough to feed the baby in the first months of life. In addition, compact dishes are easy to hold in your hand, convenient to take with you for a walk and just wash. Especially if the bottle has a wide neck. The only disadvantage of a wide neck is that a nipple block from one bottle model may not fit another. With a classic narrow neck, this problem usually does not arise. nine0003

    Babies 4-5 months old will need larger bottles, 250 to 350 ml. In order to save money, large-volume dishes can also be purchased from the birth of the baby, so that they can be used until the child switches to solid food.

    Shape and material of teat production

    Teats are available:

    • classic — round shape;
    • orthodontic - with a beveled tip to form the correct bite in a child;
    • anatomical - follow the shape of the female breast. Suitable for babies who are on a mixed diet. And also for those who have temporarily stopped breastfeeding, but later plan to return to it. nine0134

    As for the type of material, there are only two - silicone and latex. The first is wear-resistant, moderately hard, keeps its shape well, and is more hygienic. If the mother plans to return to breastfeeding, then it is better to stop the choice on a tight silicone nipple. The second is soft and elastic, quickly becomes unusable. Latex nipples are easier to suck on, so weak and premature babies are more suitable for them.

    2023 Newborn Bottle Ranking

    1. Best Latex Baby Bottle: Chicco Well-Being

    Compare Prices

    Why we liked it: Suitable for picky little, weak babies or teething babies.

    Editor's estimate:

    This 150ml bottle features a latex teat. It is made from natural raw materials (milk of rubber trees). It is softer and more elastic, stretches better. But it also wears out faster than a silicone pacifier. If your child flatly refuses to suck on a silicone pacifier, offer him a latex one. nine0003

    Teat

    Grooved rings on the end for even more elasticity of the teat. It is pleasant to scratch itchy gums about it during teething. The nipple stretches during feeding, imitating the mother's nipple. The wide base ensures that the pacifier is properly gripped by the baby. The flow rate is medium. The manufacturer positions this model as a bottle for newborns. But still, the size of the hole in the nipple is more suitable for older babies - starting from 2 months.

    Other features

    The bottle has an anti-colic valve. True, only one, not two, as in the previous model. However, it does its job very well. Thanks to the ergonomic shape, the bottle is easy to hold even for children's hands. The presence of a wide neck simplifies the process of filling the mixture and washing dishes. To make the nipple less dirty, you can close it with a transparent cap. The bottle is available in two colors: blue and pink.

    Pluses
    • teat made of natural material; nine0134
    • physiological shape of the pacifier;
    • anti-colic system;
    • wide neck;
    • is available in two colors.
    Cons
    • latex teat wears out quickly;
    • Fluid flow too strong for baby.

    2. Best newborn bottle with smart pacifier: Medela Calma

    Compare prices

    Why we like it: Suitable for combining breastfeeding with bottle feeding from the first days of life. nine0003

    Editor's estimate:

    Once again, the teat that comes with the 150 ml bottle is in the spotlight. But now, thanks to the pacifier, breastfeeding is being established, maintained and supported. During sucking, a vacuum is created, which excludes the appearance of air bubbles and their swallowing by the child. Moreover, for the entire period of feeding, the manufacturer suggests using one nipple size. Everything is the same as with natural feeding.

    The shape and length of the silicone pacifier are thought out in such a way that the baby, as in the case of mother's breasts, has difficulty obtaining milk for himself and regulates its flow himself. However, many complain about the excessively large hole in the nipple and, as a result, the strong pressure of the mixture. Because of him, the baby begins to choke. To fix the problem, after filling the bottle with milk, you need to slightly press on its body and release excess air. When the liquid from the nipple stops dripping on its own, the bottle can be given to the baby. nine0003

    Other features

    The body of the wide-mouth bottle is made of safe plastic, resistant to abrasion and high temperatures. The dishes can serve more than one child, while it will look like new. This model, like the Chicco Well-Being, is equipped with an anti-colic valve.

    Pros
    • special teat shape;
    • can be used from the first days of life;
    • good quality plastic;
    • anti-colic system; nine0134
    • wide neck.
    Cons
    • Strong milk flow if the bottle is not bled first.

    3. Best Slanted Newborn Bottle: Chicco Natural Feeling

    Compare Prices

    Why We Like It: Suitable for mixed feeding.

    Editor's estimate:

    250 ml plastic bottle suitable for feeding babies from 2 months of age. Her feature is in an unusual inclined nipple. The anatomical shape of the pacifier repeats the mother's chest, and the slope provides a natural grip and the correct position of the neck in the newborn. Such a nipple is always filled with milk, and air does not accumulate in it. nine0003

    Teat

    Ultra-soft silicone pacifier imitates natural breasts not only due to its unusual shape, but also thanks to a special velvety coating on the tip. Flexors at the base of the nipple increase its flexibility and elasticity. At the same time, the pacifier does not stick together during feeding due to the ribbed section, which gives it rigidity. But the nipple can sink inside the bottle. This happens in three cases: when the pacifier is incorrectly installed on the bottle, if the milk outlet is clogged, or if the pacifier holder is screwed too tightly to the base of the bottle. nine0003

    Other features

    Double anti-colic valve reduces the risk of digestive problems in the baby. The wide mouth of the bottle is suitable for use in combination with a Chicco breast pump. In addition, thanks to the wide mouth, the dishes are easy to wash.

    Well, where without a fly in the ointment in a barrel of honey? It would be dishonest to keep silent about a significant drawback found among the bottles of this model. We are talking about marriage, when the nipple block does not fit snugly against the neck, because milk leaks at the junction. Alas, this cannot be fixed, only the purchase of new dishes will help. nine0003

    Pros
    • anatomically inclined nipple;
    • velvety finish on the tip of the pacifier;
    • double anti-colic valve;
    • wide neck;
    • can be used with a Chicco breast pump.
    Cons
    • the nipple is sucked into the bottle during feeding;
    • Milk may leak at the attachment point of the bottle and teat assembly.

    4. Best Feeding Spoon Bottle: Pigeon

    Compare prices

    Why we liked it: For mothers who do not want to teach their child to nipples.

    Editor's estimate:

    Once again, our favorite company Pigeon is ready to surprise. This time the highlight of the program was a 120 ml bottle designed for feeding babies from 3 months. Instead of a nipple, there is a measuring spoon for liquid and semi-liquid food. It can be fruit or vegetable puree, cereal, mixture, milk or even water.

    Someone will say that you can feed a child with an ordinary spoon, and all these devices are nothing more than a whim. We do not agree. Complementary foods from such a bottle are very convenient - the food does not spill, the child remains clean. In addition, you can take the bottle with you anywhere, drink your baby on the road or while standing in line for groceries. nine0003

    Teat

    Not available. But there is a silicone spoon. Inside its handle there is a chute through which food from the bottle is dosed into the spoon. The mechanism is started by lightly pressing the piston installed in the bottom of the bottle. In this case, the liquid is poured out only when pressing on the bottle and never by itself.

    Other features

    The body of the bottle is made of soft translucent plastic. You can track the amount of food eaten or liquids drunk. The bottle comes with a cleaning brush. For transportation and storage of dishes, a spoon can be placed inside the bottle, and closed with a protective cap on top. nine0003

    This model has only one drawback - due to the small volume of the bottle and the size of the spoon, it makes sense to use the kit until the baby is 8–9 months old. In the future, the need for such dishes disappears.

    Pluses
    • silicone spoon instead of teat;
    • food pours out only when pressure is applied to the bottle;
    • easy to store and transport;
    • brush included.
    Cons
    • small bottle and spoon size. nine0134

    5. Best anti-colic newborn bottle: Philips AVENT Anti-colic with AirFree valve SCF810/14

    Compare prices

    Why we love it: is a real find for babies with gas.

    Editor's estimate:

    The highlight of this model is a special spoon-shaped anti-colic valve. Thanks to him, the nipple always remains filled with formula or milk, no matter at what angle the bottle is at the time of feeding. Accordingly, the child does not swallow air. Of course, the valve will not relieve colic by 100%. However, it will reduce the number of regurgitations, and also partially eliminate problems with gas formation. nine0003

    Teat

    Solid silicone nipple won't kink inside the bottle or stick together when feeding. Its design is designed in such a way that the baby makes the same efforts and makes the same sucking movements as with natural feeding. This means that after bottle-feeding, the baby can easily return to suckling at the mother's breast. The size of the opening in the nipple allows the baby to slow down the rate of sucking and not swallow excess air. Suitable for babies from 0 months. nine0003

    Other features

    The small plastic bottle of only 125 ml is convenient to take with you on a walk. Both she and the valve are easy to clean, including in the dishwasher. Plastic does not deform when a milk bottle is heated in a microwave oven. Measured divisions are not erased over time. The anti-colic spoon can be attached to any Philips AVENT Anti-colic bottle.

    Pros
    • unique anti-colic system;
    • anatomic teat; nine0134
    • is dishwasher safe;
    • plastic is microwave resistant;
    • Anti-colic valve fits all Philips AVENT Anti-colic bottles.
    Cons
    • anti-colic system does not completely solve the problem of colic, but only partially eliminates the symptoms.

    6. Best glass baby bottle: Pigeon Peristaltic Plus (premium glass)

    Compare prices

    Why we liked it: A bottle made of harmless material that does not release any compounds and does not chemically react with milk.

    Editor's estimate:

    The 160 ml baby bottle from 0 months is made of borosilicate glass, which is particularly durable and resistant to temperature changes. It will not burst, even if you pour boiling water into it for sterilization, for example. Glass does not become cloudy during operation. BPA free.

    Milk in a glass bottle heats up in minutes, but cools down just as quickly. When going for a walk, keep this feature in mind. In addition, it will be harder for the baby to hold a glass bottle than a plastic one when he is a little older and can eat without the help of adults.

    Teat

    Pigeon's own soft silicone physiological teat. Designed to support breastfeeding. Thanks to the matte textured surface, it is easier for the baby to grasp the pacifier correctly. And its anatomical upper part will encourage the baby to make wave-like movements with the tongue while eating, as when sucking on mother's breast. nine0003

    Other features

    There is a ventilation system at the base of the nipple that helps the milk flow from the bottle evenly. Reduces the risk of swallowing air during feeding and the occurrence of colic.

    Thanks to the wide mouth, there will be no problems when washing and sterilizing dishes. It is also convenient to pour the mixture into a wide neck. More than necessary, you will not dilute it, since a bright and accurate measuring scale is applied to the bottle body.

    Pros
    • premium glass;
    • anti-colic system;
    • physiological teat;
    • wide neck;
    • precise measuring scale.
    Cons
    • milk in the glass instantly heats up, but also cools down quickly;
    • a glass bottle is harder for a child to hold than a plastic one.

    7. Best feeding bottle with cup: Dr. Brown's 2 in 1 Options Narrow Neck

    Compare prices

    Why we liked it: A good opportunity to gradually accustom your baby to a new form of eating.

    Editor's estimate:

    Bottle by Dr. Brown's 250 ml grows with your child. From a classic bottle with a nipple, with a slight movement of the hand, it turns into a drinker. This saves you money and space in your kitchen cabinet. The dishes are designed for children from 6 months.

    Soother

    The shape of the silicone nipple is as close as possible to the female breast, so the transition from natural to artificial feeding and vice versa will be painless for the baby. Thanks to the patented ventilation system, air never enters the nipple and mixes with milk. The baby will receive from nutrition all the vitamins of groups A, C and E that he needs, but problems with gas, colic and frequent regurgitation will bypass the baby. nine0003

    Spout made of hard silicone. Before using it, you must remove the ventilation system from the bottle.

    Other features

    Unlike the Medela Calma, this model has a narrow neck. Washing the bottle and the anti-colic device that comes with it is cumbersome, even though a brush is attached to the set with dishes - small and inconvenient. But the protective cap, on the contrary, is large and tightly closed. Now you can take the bottle with you on the road without fear of staining or damaging the nipple or cup spout. nine0003

    The tableware is available in two colors - blue and pink. A measuring scale is applied to the plastic body, although its gradation is hardly distinguishable against the background of a bright pattern decorating the bottle.

    Pros
    • 2 in 1 classic bottle and cup;
    • patented ventilation system;
    • physiological teat;
    • protective cap and brush included.
    Cons
    • inconvenient to wash;
    • faded measuring scale. nine0134

    8. Best bottle for a newborn with feeding difficulties: Medela SpecialNeeds

    Compare prices

    Why we liked it: Helps improve feeding in babies with neurological and maxillofacial disorders.

    Editor's estimate:

    This 150ml bottle model bears some resemblance to the Pigeon. It is also designed specifically for premature babies with a minimal sucking reflex, as well as for babies with Down syndrome. Thanks to the extended base of the nipple, the bottle can also be used to feed babies with cleft lip. Suitable for newborns from the first days of life. nine0003

    Teat

    Absolutely smooth silicone nipple with no relief, so soft that milk can be squeezed out with only a slight pressure on it with lips or gums. The flow force is variable and depends on the angle of the bottle relative to the baby's nose. The pacifier nozzle will fit any bottle with a narrow neck.

    Other features

    The body of the bottle is made of plastic. There is a measuring scale - colorless, therefore hardly distinguishable. Like most models, this one also has an anti-colic valve. Dishes can be sterilized. nine0003

    Pros
    • suitable for children with physical and neurological disabilities;
    • easy to get milk;
    • flow adjustable;
    • anti-colic system;
    • can be sterilized.
    Cons
    • poorly visible measuring scale.

    9. Best dry mix container bottle: Twistshake Pastel

    Compare prices

    Why we love it: The kit has everything you need to store, feed and properly dilute formula for the smallest gourmets.

    Editor's estimate:

    This is not just a bottle, but a full-fledged "ammunition" to combat the hunger of a newborn glutton. And it consists of a bottle of 180 ml, a 100 ml container for dry mix with a lid, a mesh for breaking lumps, a nipple and a protective cap.

    Teat

    The pacifier in this model is made of silicone. Convex notches covering it are needed in order to give the nipple sufficient rigidity and avoid sticking of the tip during sucking. Suitable for feeding babies from birth with formula, liquid cereals or milk. nine0003

    Other features

    All other parts of the kit are made of soft polypropylene, which, by the way, is easy to scratch with careless handling. It also has a traditional anti-colic valve to help with gas. The extra wide mouth makes it easy to fill the formula and clean the bottle. The special ergonomic shape of the dishes is designed to comfortably hold the bottle in your hands, as well as to keep the milk warm for a longer time. The mesh breaks the lumps of the mixture, prevents it from foaming and sticking to the walls inside the nipple. When transporting, all components of the kit can be folded into a bottle. nine0003

    The manufacturer produces a set of first dishes for a newborn in 5 colors: blue, lilac, green, coral and pink.

    Pros
    • includes everything you need to mix and store formula;
    • ergonomically shaped to retain heat;
    • anti-colic system;
    • wide neck;
    • variety of colors.
    Cons
    • The plastic case is easily scratched. nine0134

    10. Best bottle for premature babies: Pigeon

    Compare prices

    Why we like it: Suitable for babies with a weak sucking reflex.

    Editor's estimate:

    The 100 ml bottle is intended for supplementary feeding of premature, debilitated babies and infants from the first days of life. At the same time, after feeding from a bottle, they can easily switch to natural feeding. nine0003

    The pacifier was clinically tested at the Scientific Center for Children's Health of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences in 2013.

    Teat

    The small teat is made of very soft and elastic silicone, which makes it easy to suck on. The rough surface at the base, like the Pigeon "Peristaltic Plus" (premium glass), is needed for a better grip on the pacifier by the child. The pressure of the jet is weak so that the baby does not choke on the mixture and does not gasp for air. Uniform flow of milk into the nipple provides a special ventilation system. Unfortunately, there is no such nipple for sale separately from the bottle. nine0003

    Other features

    The bottle is made of durable glass. A scale is drawn on the body. But this model is not equipped with a lid for the pacifier.

    Pros
    • pacifier for babies with reduced sucking reflex;
    • anatomical teat;
    • ventilation system;
    • measuring scale.
    Cons
    • you can't buy a teat separately from the bottle;
    • bottle cap not included. nine0134

    11. Best feeding bottle with orthodontic nipple: Baby Me

    Compare prices

    Why we liked it: The bottle will help not only feed, but also form a correct bite in the baby.

    Editor's estimate:

    The 150 ml bottle has two features at once. The first is the beveled and slightly flattened shape of the nipple, which contributes to the formation of the correct bite in the crumbs. To keep the pacifier in the mouth, the child has to actively work the jaws back and forth, as a result of which the maxillofacial muscles develop. The second has handles on the sides to make it even more convenient for the baby to hold the bottle while feeding. nine0003

    Teat

    Silicone nipple with a medium flow is more suitable for babies from 3-4 months, although the manufacturer's label on the bottle indicates a limit of 0+.

    Other features

    The bottle is made of high quality harmless plastic. Just like the Pigeon Peristaltic Plus (premium glass), it is BPA-free. But unlike the glass model, this bottle is lighter and will not break if used carelessly at home or on the road.

    There is a measuring scale on the body. However, after prolonged use of the dishes, they may be partially erased. Colorful colors with cheerful patterns are also likely to lose their brightness over time. nine0003

    But a more significant disadvantage of the model is the lack of an anti-colic system. Although due to the special shape of the orthodontic nipple, the pacifier fits snugly to the lips. Because of this, the swallowing of air by the baby during feeding is significantly reduced.

    Pros
    • orthodontic teat;
    • light and practical;
    • side handles;
    • measuring scale;
    • assorted colors with designs.
    Cons
    • no anti-colic system;
    • The measuring scale wears off when the bottle is used for a long time.

    How to choose the best bottle for your newborn

    What else should you pay attention to when choosing a bottle?

    Teat size and fluid flow rate

    Teat size is selected according to the child's age. So, zero or first is suitable for a baby from the first days of life. Equally important is the strength of the fluid flow:

    1. Strong flow is provided by one large or 2-4 small holes in the nipple. These pacifiers are suitable for children from 6 to 12 months. In some models, they can be used from 3 months, but this is rather an exception.
    2. Medium flow is provided by 2-3 small holes in the nipple. This pace of feeding is convenient for babies from 3-6 months.
    3. Low flow due to 1, maximum 2 holes in the nipple. The liquid flows slowly, almost without pressure. Suitable for babies from 0 to 3 months. nine0134
    4. Variable flow is provided not by round holes, but by elongated slots that regulate the rate at which the liquid flows out of the bottle. There are risks on the nipple, when one of them is combined with the child's nose, the slot opens more or less, and the flow force changes with it. The pressure of the liquid is also affected by the angle at which the baby presses the nipple during feeding.

    Anticolic system

    This is a special valve at the base of the nipple or a vertical mechanism that is placed directly in the bottle. In both cases, the action of the anti-colic system is aimed at eliminating air bubbles that enter the nipple during feeding. It significantly reduces bloating and regurgitation after meals. However, you need to understand that swallowing air is only one of the many reasons that can provoke bouts of colic in a newborn. nine0003

    Measuring scale

    It is necessary to dilute the right amount of formula, to control how much milk the child drank in one feeding. But be careful! Not all baby bottles have accurate scales. The error can be up to 10%.

    Everything you need to know about bottle feeding your newborn

    Using any bottle, even the best, will not do any good, and sometimes even harm the baby, if used incorrectly. Therefore, we will tell you how and in what position to feed a newborn from a bottle, how to care for baby dishes and how much to buy them. nine0003

    How many bottles does a newborn need

    If the baby is breastfed, you can buy 1-2 bottles to supplement the baby with water and to express breast milk if the mother needs to go away on business. After six months, the bottles are useful for liquid cereals, kefir and juices. Artificialists, on the other hand, will need much more utensils - at least 4 voluminous bottles for the main food, so that parents have time to sterilize the utensils and dilute the mixture on time, and 2 more smaller ones - for liquid. nine0003

    How to sterilize baby bottles

    Baby bottles must be washed and sterilized before being used for their intended purpose. The most modern way is a steam sterilizer. The time spent is about 10 minutes. It can be replaced by a simple immersion of children's dishes in boiling water for 2-3 minutes. However, not all bottles will withstand the boiling water test.

    Another way to sterilize is to place bottles without nipples in a pot of water and close with a tight lid. Then put the container in the microwave for 5-7 minutes. nine0003

    Antiseptic tablets are also great for killing bacteria on children's dishes. The drug is dissolved in a container with cold water. Bottles without nipples are lowered there, closed with a lid and left to be processed for 30 minutes.

    How to bottle feed a newborn

    1. Baby food should not be cold or hot. Put milk from a bottle on your wrist and check its temperature.
    2. Make sure your baby has a good grip on the nipple while feeding. Its oblong part should be in his mouth, and the wide part should be clasped by his lips. nine0134
    3. The vertical position of the formula bottle is unacceptable - the baby will choke. It is held at a 45⁰ angle and made sure that the nipple spout is constantly filled with milk.
    4. Check the condition of the teat from time to time. Make sure that it does not break or stick together. A deformed pacifier must be replaced with a new one.

    Take short breaks every 5 to 10 minutes to let your baby burp. Otherwise, the child will create a false sense of satiety. nine0003

    How to hold a newborn while bottle feeding

    The most physiological and comfortable position for a baby to feed is in the mother's arms. The baby's head is placed on the crook of the elbow as if he were lying down during breastfeeding. At the same time, it is very important to make sure that the baby looks forward, and his head is always slightly raised relative to the body.

    You can also lay your baby on the left side, secure the position with pillows and bring the bottle to the side. It is convenient to feed the baby in his crib, putting a diaper or a thin pillow under his head. nine0003

    Do not feed your baby in a horizontal position because of the risk of formula leaking into the middle ear. If the baby's head falls back while eating, then he may choke.

    Wrapping Up

    Choose a quality newborn bottle from a reputable, trusted brand. The first crockery of the baby does not have to be fashionable or beautiful.
