A bib for a baby is difficult to fully classify as clothing. It is more of a hygiene item that allows you to reduce the number of washes and keeps things clean on the child. It is convenient not only during meals, but also during periods of profuse salivation. That's where its name came from - the bib.

Types of bibs

Each bib is suitable for different situations and tasks. The range of bibs includes options from different materials:

  1. Textile. They serve primarily to protect clothing from regurgitation and saliva. Fabric bibs are usually dressy and brightly colored. Optimal for very young children who require soft textures.
  2. Oilcloth. These can be used when a child learns to drink while sitting in a highchair. On a waterproof surface, the liquid will drain onto the table, leaving things dry.
  3. Silicone and plastic. Good for the period of mastering independent food. Everything that does not fall into the mouth falls into a special hard pocket. Both clothes and everything around remain clean.
  4. Two layers. A waterproof oilcloth is hidden under the upper soft layer. Such children's bibs absorb, but at the same time do not allow things to get wet.

Shapes and sizes

Bib designs may vary. It is influenced by functionality, purpose and the need to wear it outside the home. Manufacturers offer the following molds:

  • Kerchief or scarf in the form of a triangle. Will become an element of the child's wardrobe thanks to the stylish design. They usually have original prints, look nice on the neck and do a great job with flowing saliva. Such products are compact, so their use when feeding is not advisable - clothes will not be protected properly.
  • A bib is a round or rectangular piece of cloth that covers a baby's chest. A versatile item that is suitable for any purpose, especially if there is an oilcloth lining.
  • Apron. It has a large size, covers almost the entire front of the body. It is convenient during complementary feeding and at the first attempts to eat on its own.
  • The raincoat is an extended version of the apron. Complemented with sleeves for those who like to get into food with their hands. It will protect the child's clothes from stains and keep him neat.
  • The pocket is made of plastic, PVC or silicone. For some children, it can be bulky and make you want to dig into food that has fallen into a pocket.

Small bibs will do the job of absorbing saliva and water. During meals, you will need a large size of bibs, which will better protect clothing from contamination.

Fasteners

It is not easy to secure the bib around the neck of a child who is constantly moving. Therefore, the fastener must be reliable, allow you to quickly put on and take off the product, not dig into the skin. There are several fastening options:

  • Ties. Previously the most common type, but not the most convenient. Putting on a bib quickly with this method of fixation will not work. Children begin to act up, turn their heads in displeasure. If the knot is tightened, you will either have to try to untie it for a long time, or cut the rope with scissors.
  • Velcro is convenient and fast, but short-lived. When it stops fixing, the item will either have to be thrown away or a new mount will have to be sewn on. The long hair of babies can get tangled in the Velcro bristles.
  • Button. Also convenient, but more reliable and durable. Some manufacturers place them on the side of the neck, which makes it easier to put on and take off.
  • Clip-on collar for use with silicone and plastic pocket bibs. They have several holes, this allows you to adjust the width of the armhole.

Velcro and button are the most popular because they save the mother's time and allow the child to be less disturbed during the process of putting on the bib.

How to choose a bib

First of all, be guided by the age of the child and the tasks that this item will perform. For a newborn, choose cotton scarves or terry bibs with ties. The neck should not be pressed too close to the neck. A soft edge and quality seams are needed.

With the introduction of complementary foods, there is a need for bibs for feeding. Children can snort with a full mouth, spit out food, so the entire front of the body must be protected. Try wearing aprons, PVC raincoats, or versatile two-layer bibs.

Having picked up a spoon, the baby moves on to more adult food, including solid food. And for many mothers, it is convenient if the pieces fall into the pocket. But children can touch the bib, try to tear it, so it must be made of dense, environmentally friendly and safe material.
