How to choose vitamins for children on iHerb: organika — LiveJournal
For all current iHerb promotions and promo codes, read HERE On my Instagram blog @organika.blog I am often asked questions about which vitamins to choose for children? There are a lot of different manufacturers and a large selection of baby supplements on iHerb, it is especially difficult for beginners to understand this variety.
In this article I will tell you which manufacturers are better, what to look for when choosing children's vitamins on iHerb, how to understand the compositions, which supplements to give preference to, and which ones you should not take.
📍I'll start with the main thing - vitamin D . A fact generally recognized by all doctors is that vitamin D must be taken from birth and throughout life.
The normal level of vitamin D supports immunity , reduces the frequency of SARS and many other diseases.
But, unfortunately, the vast majority of people are deficient in vitamin D, since we can get it only in the summer at midday hours (from 11 to 16), when the UV index is more than 2, but few people sunbathe at this time. The use of sunscreen also blocks the production of vitamin D.
Vitamin D is especially important for children:
- it contributes to the normal growth and proper development of the bones of the skeleton;
- increases immunity;
- contributes to the normal function of the thyroid gland;
- the absorption of calcium depends on the level of vitamin D. When the level is low, calcium is not absorbed!
Options recommended by Russian pediatricians: Aquadetrim and Vigantol.
About Akvadetrim recently read such an interesting thing. Vitamin D itself is fat-soluble, while Aquadetrim is an aqueous solution, and chemical ingredients are used to dissolve vitamin D in it.
If we look at its composition, we will see there, in addition to cholecalciferol (D3), such excipients as:
- macrogol glyceryl ricinoleate (polyethylene glycol polymer, food additive E),
- sucrose (sugar substitute),
- sodium hydrogen phosphate dodecahydrate (emulsifier, food additive E),
- citric acid monohydrate (preservative),
- anise flavor,
- benzyl alcohol (solvent and preservative),
- purified water.
Not surprisingly, Aquadetrim causes allergies in many children. So it was in our case. My daughter from Aquadetrim had reddened and flaky skin with specks.
Oil-based drops are the best form of vitamin D for children. Here, triglyceride fats (coconut, palm, sunflower, linseed) act as an auxiliary substance. Oil preparations usually do not cause allergies, as they do not contain alcohol!
Despite the fact that Vigantol, which is sold in Russian pharmacies, is an oily solution, people often complain about it, so in order not to risk it, after Aquadetrim I decided to try American-made vitamin D with iHerb.
Daughter has been taking it for two years now and she's fine :)
We've tried two options:
Which Vitamin D to Avoid on iHerb
ChildLife, Essentials, Vitamin D3, Natural Berry Flavor, 1 fl oz (29.6 ml), $5.36 this bottle, despite the volume of 30 ml, has only 115 doses, and in the versions above - 360! And all because here 1 dose is 8 drops (500 IU). In my opinion, it is much more convenient to give 1 drop than to measure 8 drops with a pipette. And also note that this is not an oily solution of vitamin D, but an aqueous one. It is alcohol-free, unlike Aquadetrim, but it is still better to choose vitamin D in oil.
This option is not bad, just not profitable and inconvenient Gummi King, Vitamin D, 60 gummies, $4.96
This option may appeal with low cost and a child-friendly form of chewy bears. But I also do not advise taking such vitamin D, because, firstly, it is not an oily form and contains sugar, secondly, it is vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol), and not D3 (cholecalciferol), and thirdly, this jar is enough for only a month, which is not very profitable compared to the options above. Vitamin D2 is an artificial form of vitamin D and is less easily absorbed. Children should only be given vitamin D3!
Children's vitamin-mineral complexes at iHerb
If your child has been prescribed multivitamins by a pediatrician, or you yourself decided that he needs them because the child does not eat well and often gets sick, then you should definitely go for them on iHerb. Vitamins on Eicherb, of course, are not cheaper than in Russian pharmacies, but the quality and composition are much better.
What to look for when choosing vitamins for children on iHerb
- form of vitamins: natural or synthetic
- dosages should not exceed daily allowances, but should not be too low
- manufacturer's reliability
- bioavailable forms of minerals (citrate, chelate)
- no artificial colors, sweeteners, preservatives
All vitamin complexes on iHerb can be divided into natural ("raw"), synthetic and mixed type.
Natural ("raw") vitamins - this is the best option for children's vitamins on iHerb. There are simply no such people in Russia.
What are "raw" vitamins? These are those that are obtained directly from fruits, vegetables and yeast using technologies that maximize the preservation of all useful substances. In the composition of such vitamins, the sources of their receipt are always indicated. For example, vitamin A from carrots is Vitamin A (as beta-carotene from carrot). That is, such vitamins are recognized by the body as ordinary food and, accordingly, are better absorbed.
Two of iHerb's top reliable natural vitamin brands are MegaFood and Garden of Life . Here are the kids' options:
Garden of Life, Vitamin Code, Kids, Whole Food Chewable Multivitamins for Kids, Cherry Flavor, 60 Chewy Bears tablets , $24.60 - for 2 months But here you need to consider the following facts:
- natural vitamins are expensive
- not very pleasant in taste, the child may refuse to eat them
- suitable for children from 4-5 years old
- may cause allergies due to the presence of a large number of different fruits, vegetables and herbs in the composition.
At the same time, these vitamins and minerals are absorbed much better than synthetic forms, do not contain GMOs, gluten and are made only from natural and organic ingredients. Therefore, when choosing vitamins for children on iHerb, first of all, I advise you to take a closer look at them. You can take the smallest jar for testing
Garden of Life, Vitamin Code, Children's Chewable Whole Food Multivitamin, Cherry Flavored, 30 Gummies $12. 59 - 2 weeks
Another fact in favor of these vitamins is that they are in the top five in the ranking Best Multivitamins for Children
Here vitamins were evaluated not only by naturalness, but also by such parameters as:
- composition (maximum amount of vitamins and minerals)
- efficiency
- bioavailability
- safety
The compilers of the rating recommend choosing vitamins with a rating of at least 8 points.
What to do if the child is less than 4 years old or "raw" vitamins do not fit or you just want a more budget option. In this case, it is worth considering the mixed type option, where there are both natural forms of vitamins and synthetic ones.
Here, when choosing, you need to focus on the manufacturer and composition.
Ranked Best Multivitamins for Children in 5th place are just vitamins of this type.
Solgar, Kangavites, Children's Complete Multivitamin & Mineral, Berry Flavored, 120 Chewable Tablets , $13. 20 - Enough for 4 months for kids under 4, 2 months for ages 4 and up Suitable for children 2 years of age and older who can chew hard tablets.
Together with this complex it is necessary to take additional vitamin D, there is very little of it here.
And I would also pay attention to the brand Nature's Plus , namely for the Animal Parade series (until September 13, they are subject to a 15% discount). This brand has received various accreditations and certifications from third parties http://naturesplus.com/accreditation/
Nature's Plus, Animal Chewable Multivitamins for Children, Multiple Flavors, 180 Animals $23.16 - Children under 4 enough for 6 months, for 4 and older - for 3 months 180 hard tablets for chewing / cracking in a jar. For children under 4 years old, one piece a day is enough, that is, the jar will last for six months!
This vitamin complex is without artificial colors and preservatives, without gluten, as a sweetener - fructose, most of the vitamins are in natural form, and the minerals are in a chelated (aminoate complex), i. e. in the most digestible.
Ingredients: (I noted the natural forms of vitamins)
Please note that this complex contains vitamin D3, iodine (from kelp) and iron!
Improved version available
Nature's Plus, Nature's Plus, Animal Parade, Children's Multivitamin & Mineral Chewable, Variety of Flavors, 120 Tablets $23.16 - enough for children under 4 years old for 4 months, from 4 and older - for 2 months essential fatty acid complex (alpha-linoleic, linoleic, oleic, palmitic fatty acids (from sunflower, flax, spirulina)- added enzyme blend - amylase, lactase, lipase, bromelain (from pineapple), papain (from papaya), cellulase, protease - for digestion
- lutein (active carotenoid from tomatoes) - for vision
-probiotics L-acidophilus, L. plantarum, S. salivarius M18, S. salivarius K12
What complex children's vitamins with iHerb should not be taken
Gummi King, Multivitamins and minerals for children, 60 gummies, $4. 96 for one month
Don't be fooled by the low cost and nice shape of gummy bears, it's better to see the composition:
Firstly, the dosages are very low. To get the required daily dosage, you need to eat 4-8 bears per day. That is, the banks will last for a week. Secondly, these are completely synthetic vitamins, also with a lot of sugar. Thirdly, there is a very modest set of vitamins and minerals, only zinc and iodine. This is definitely not what you should order from the USA, it's easier to buy the same thing in any pharmacy.
Daily Values of Vitamins for Children 4 to 8 Years Old (these are US current norms, they may differ from Russian ones)
9 to 13 years old
Or you can trust this rating of the best children's vitamins
https://www.multivitaminguide.org/best-multivitamins-children.html#comparison-table
iherb vitamins for babies and children under 2 years of age
pay attention, for example, to
ChildLife, Essential Multivitamin & Mineral, Orange/Mango Flavor, 8 fl oz (237 ml)
This is a liquid vitamin-mineral complex.Dosage for children up to 4 years - 1 teaspoon. A bottle will last about 1.5 months.
Please note that there is very little vitamin D here, so along with this complex it is necessary to give it to the child additionally. Also, there is no iron in the composition, but in comparison with other options for vitamin complexes for children under 2 years old, here is the most optimal set of vitamins and minerals.
Calcium for children with iHerb
Most vitamin-mineral complexes do not contain iron and calcium (usually it is present, but in minimal amounts), since they are not absorbed together.
To take calcium, you also need a reason, you should not drink it just prophylactically. For example, late teething or a large fontanelle are not indications for taking calcium. I gave my daughter calcium at the age of two, when I noticed serious problems with my nails, they exfoliated and broke at the root. A two-month course of calcium solved this problem.
When choosing calcium, it is important to pay attention to two points:
- in what form calcium is (preferably chelate, malate and citrate)
- is there magnesium and vitamin D in the complex (these are necessary elements for proper absorption of calcium)
My daughter took Calcium Nature's Plus from Animal Parade
Nature's Plus, Source of Life, Animal Parade, Calcium, Sugar Free, Natural Vanilla Ice Cream Flavor, 90 Chewable Tablets These are chewable tablets in the form of animals with the taste of ice cream. Calcium in chelated form (aminoate complex), magnesium is added, and I give vitamin D separately.
For 1.5 months of taking the nails became significantly thicker, stopped exfoliating. I am very pleased with the result, this calcium is really working.
It should be taken in the evening before bedtime, so it is better absorbed, and magnesium has a calming effect. At the same time, if you give vitamin D separately, then it is better to do it in the morning, since, on the contrary, it has an invigorating effect.
If chewables aren't right for your child, you can try liquid calcium
ChildLife, Essentials, Liquid Calcium with Magnesium, Natural Orange Flavor, 16 fl oz (474 ml) zinc and vitamin D. But here it is only 100 IU, so you still need to give an additional 300-400 IUWHO calcium requirements:
• 0-3 years - 600 mg;
• 4-10 years - 800 mg;
• 10-13 years - 1000 mg;
• 13-16 years - 1200 mg;
• 16 years and older - 1000 mg.
Highest requirement for calcium in adolescents 13-16 years old
Maximum allowable calcium doses:
Up to 6 months 1000 mg
6-12 months 1500 mg
1-8 years 2500 mg
9-13 years 30007 14-18 years old 3000 mg
19-50 years old 2500 mg
51 years old and older 2000 mg
With food, we get about 250-400 mg of calcium per day, so even supplementing a child’s diet with calcium supplements (+250 mg), the risk of reaching there is practically no maximum.
Iron on Eicherb for children
Iron can only be taken as prescribed by a doctor, it should not be given prophylactically, since an excess can be dangerous. Only a small amount of iron in complex vitamins is acceptable.
