This Blackberry + Kale + Apple Baby Food Puree is a fast and easy puree -mighty apples are steamed with dark and enticing blackberries and nutrient rich baby kale. It’s like a vitamin party for baby, along with loads of healthy antioxidants. The perfect nutrient dense baby food puree, and it tastes amazing!! Baby will love it, and you will too.
It’s Friday, and my brain is completely fried. It’s a sad day when you look forward to the week being over so that you can drink a glass (or three) of wine and crawl into bed around 8 so that you can pretend to read for exactly 3 seconds before you fall blissfully asleep with your workout clothes on.
But wait for it….
Come Saturday night… it’s going to be party time. Time to rock out! A family bbq at my friends house that starts at 3 and will definitely be over by 7 so that we can all put the kids to bed by a decent hour, which means, once again I will be in bed around 8, but this time I will most likely skip the workout clothes and just sleep in my party frock. Nothing wrong with that right?
That’s my plan for this weekend, what’s yours?
So tonight, I am making this simple blackberry + kale + apple puree that will give baby something delicious to eat for the next couple of days – hello KALE!!!! All while taking exactly 3 brain cells to make, I need to save all of the ones I have left for trying to decide if I should go for white or red wine tonight. It’s a tough call!
Let’s talk quickly about this puree, before I send you off to the kitchen to whip up a batch for this weekend.
Mighty apples are steamed with dark and enticing blackberries that are mixed together with some nutrient rich and powerful baby kale. It’s like a vitamin party for baby – fiber, omega 3-fatty acids, omega 6-fatty acids, vitamins A and C, folate and powerful antioxidants. Personally, I like to use baby kale for my baby. I find that baby kale isn’t as dense as regular big ol’ leafy kale and makes purees less intense for baby’s taste buds (and mine). This puree is great served straight up for baby or toddler, but it is also beyond amazing mixed with some yogurt, ricotta or quinoa.
Now, into the kitchen you go, hopefully with a wine glass in hand:)
- 2 apples [galafuji or pink lady], cored and chopped
- 1 cup blackberries
- 1 cup baby kale packed
- 1/2 cup water reserved, breast milk or formula
In a medium saucepan, bring 2 inches of water to a boil over medium heat. Place the apples, blackberries and kale into a steamer basket, in that order, and steam for 10 minutes. Reserve cooking water. Let cool slightly.
Transfer the apples, blackberries and kale into a blender or food processor and puree for 1-2 minutes, adding 1/4 cup of liquid at a time, until you have reached your desired consistency.
Age: 6+ months
Yield: 8 ounces
Note on Kale: I find that baby kale is less intense for baby puree, but you can also use regular kale if you have it on hand. If using regular kale, for best results trim stem and stalk.
Note on Apples: I would recommend using organic apples as apples are on the dirty dozen list.
Storage: Fridge – store in an airtight container in the fridge for 3-4 days. Freezer – can be frozen for up to 4 months (this and this are my favorite freezer storage containers).

Quinoa Blackberry Banana Avocado baby puree +6M

A “ready in 5 minutes” complete baby meal to boost your baby’s brain development thanks to the Omega 3 fatty acids contained in the avocado.
I like to cook a nice batch of quinoa (1 cup uncooked makes 3 cups cooked!!) and have it handy in the refrigerator for my recipes (salads, meatballs..). If you cook some quinoa for yourself you can simply save few tablespoons for this lovely recipe for your baby.
This is also a lovely idea for a “meal-on-the-go” or for long trips. You can bring with you the ingredients separately and combine them together when needed for a fresh puree!
Quinoa is a naturally gluten free seed that tastes and behaves like a grain. A super food packed of minerals like calcium (= stronger bones) and iron (= makes your body function), vitamins A,D,E and a great source of protein (= building blocks for your baby’s body). High in fibre (= helps the digestive system) and with a low glycemic index. That’s why quinoa is highly recommended as a baby food ingredient.
Today I paired quinoa with other ingredients loaded with nutrients and flavor: avocado + blackberries (sooo sweet and in season) + banana (=potassium).
A creamy, naturally sweet and tasty combo that I’m sure your little one will love.
Like for many of my baby purees you will decide the right consistency for your little one 🙂
If your baby is into a chunky consistency simply mash all the ingredients with a fork.
If you are looking for a smooth puree, place all the ingredients in a food processor or tall container if using an immersion blender and blend in order to obtain the desired consistency. To thin your puree you have many options: breastmilk, baby formula, coconut water, warm water (to know more about how to thin your baby food, check out this other post too)
Add as much thinning liquid as you need, a bit at the time.
You can store any leftovers in an air tight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days or freeze them for up to 3 months. Be ready to see the puree color switching to a brownish tone: it’s the natural oxidation of the avocado and banana. It’s harmless, don’t worry. The taste/texture/nutritional value will stay the same, it’s just the color that will change with the exposure to air. - 1 banana
- 1 cup fresh blackberries or any seasonal berries you like
- 1/2 avocado
- 1/2 cup cooked quinoa

Cook the quinoa

In a food processor or using a tall container and an immersion blender combine all the ingredients.

Blend up until smooth and creamy.

Add any thinning liquid of your choice (breastmilk, baby formula, coconut water, warm water) in little increments. Few tablespoons at the time.

Serve immediately or store in the refrigerator for up to 3 days or freeze for up to 3 months

In general, my husband took me with the children on a bicycle trip. Romance! While my husband was chopping wood for the bath, we wandered through the chamomile field. It is surprising that there is almost no medicinal chamomile, I found one single bush along the road. On the other hand, a huge amount of erigeron or small-flowered, very similar to chamomile, so the chamomile field, but alas, not chamomile.

I already made blackberry puree and compote at home.

Blackberry is rich in antioxidants which promote the rapid development of the child's brain. She is also a good source vitamin C, which supports immunity and improves iron absorption, as well as vitamin K, which plays a key role in blood clotting.
BlackberryLike most fruits, blackberries contain a good dose of fiber which is essential to prevent constipation. Blackberry can change the baby's stool to black.
Blackberries can cause choking in children under 4 years old, so cut them into 4 pieces before offering them as berries.
I draw your attention, , that blackberries have small seeds that children do not always like, so I advise to rub blackberry puree through a fine sieve. For older children, you can simply crush the puree with a fork, as in the photo I did with fresh blackberries.
Blackberry puree suitable for children over 12 months , fresh blackberries can be offered to children over 1.5 years old.
