Not just for babies and toddlers, this chicken soup is amazing and is sure to be a hit with the whole family. A hearty soup packed with flavour and textures.

5 Reasons to Love this Soup

  1. Family-friendly - not just for babies, this chicken soup is sure to be a family favourite.
  2. Packed with flavour (read more about the benefits of adding herbs and spices to baby food here)
  3. Textured - Allows baby to explore a range of textures and is a great finger food soup (baby can fish out or scoop pieces of food).
  4. Adaptable - you can replace the couscous with pasta, rice, or quinoa.
  5. Easy - super simple to make and can be made in advance.

Not only is this soup delicious, it is full of healthy ingredients.

  • Veggies: Carrots, celery and onion provide the flavour base of the soup. The peas are added at the end for extra veg content (could be missed out or replaced with corn).
  • Chicken: The chicken cooks in the soup, not only is this easier but it also makes the chicken lovely and tender. Chicken breasts are detailed in the recipe but they can be replaced with thighs, if prefered.
  • Stock: As babies shouldn’t have salt added to their food, homemade/low sodium chicken stock should be used. This chicken stock recipe is great to use.  Make it in advance and freeze in batches to have available when needed
  • Herbs & Spices: Garlic, ginger, turmeric, rosemary & thyme all add amazing flavour to this soup. You can replace the dried herbs with a sprig of fresh if preferred.
  • Pearl / Israeli Couscous:  Pearl couscous is great in this recipe and perfect for little ones. The starches help to thicken the soup and makes it easier for a baby/toddler to scoop. You can replace with pasta, rice or quinoa.

Process Shots and Cooking Tips

  1. Saute (without browning) the onion, celery, carrots and garlic, on low heat, for around 10 min. This helps to coax out the flavors and forms the aromatic base for the soup. Taking your time on this is worth it, it also ensures the vegetables are really soft for babies.
  2. Add the turmeric and ginger and stir for around 30 seconds to let the spices cook a bit.
  3. Add the chicken stock, rosemary, thyme, and chicken breasts. Wait, without increasing the heat, until the stock comes to a very low simmer. Don't be tempted to increase the heat at this point, to speed up the simmer, doing this can make the chicken tough.
  4. When the liquid is at a low simmer, add the couscous. You want to keep the soup at a low simmer so will need to adjust the heat accordingly. Cook for 20 mins, or until the chicken is cooked through. To check for doneness, an internal thermometer inserted into the thickest part of the chicken should read 75 degrees Celcius /165 degrees Fahrenheit, and the juices will run clear when you pierce the chicken with a knife.
  5. Once the chicken is cooked, remove with a slotted spoon and transfer to a cutting board to shred with two forks
  6. Add chicken back to pot then stir in the peas. If you find that you don't have enough broth you can add in another cup.

Storage Instructions

Learn more about storing baby food

  • REFRIGERATE: Allow the soup to cool quickly and store it in an airtight container, in the refrigerator for up to two days.
  • FREEZE: The base recipe for this soup is suitable for freezing. Make the soup as directed, but don't add the couscous. Allow to cool and store in airtight containers in the freezer. Freeze for up to two months. When it comes to reheating the soup, prepare the couscous separately, and stir it in when everything is hot and ready to go.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I blend this chicken soup for my baby?

You can if you wish, but it is good to introduce your baby to lots of different textures. It can be hard for young babies to distinguish between the thin liquid and food pieces and they often default to swallowing instead of chewing first. If this is the case, you can use a slotted spoon to remove some chicken, couscous, and veggies. Practice by adding small amounts of the broth. Learn more about soup for babies.

I prefer a stew-like soup, will I like this?

This is definitely a chunky soup. You can add more couscous if you like (add up to 1 cup of couscous). You can always add more broth at the end if needed.

Chicken soup for babies, toddlers and older kids made with fresh whole ingredients. It can be served for babies from 6 months in a smooth puree form or chunkier for older family members. This baby chicken soup is naturally gluten, grain and dairy free, and evenGAPS friendly for babies and older kids. It’s the perfect way to serve chicken for babies who have food allergies and need soothing comfort food.

Making this chicken soup for babies takes quite some time, but the best part is that you make a large batch and can stock the fridge with healthy baby foodfor a few days.

Chicken Soup For Babies / Toddlers /Kids

This baby chicken soup is a 2 in 1 recipe, first simmering chicken meat and bones with seasonings and herbs creates a delicious homemade chicken stock for the soup, then into which the fresh vegetables are chopped and the chicken meat is shredded and served alongside.

Using the chicken meat, bones and skin provides the right combination of fat, salt and flavor. Don’t be tempted to use only meat, as the flavor won’t be as round.

For the most basic baby chicken soup, this recipe will work beautifully with or without a starchy component such as noodles or rice, but if you are comfortable with those, don’t hesitate to add some.

How To Make Chicken Soup For Baby

Always try to make the chicken soup for baby with a stock made from scratch with organic ingredients. Yes there’s more steps than a quick and easy chicken noodle soup recipe, but it is so worth it because what’s more important than your baby’s health?!

Here are the steps:

1. First Prepare And Cook The Chicken Meat & Bones
  • Wash the chicken (cut the parts with the most bones and cartilages, keep the breast for another meal) place it in a deep pot and add filtered water, bring to a boil.
  • When it starts to boil, reduce the heat to medium-low and spoon off any foam or scum that rises to the top.
  • To the pot add the bay leaves, the black pepper, and thyme. Reduce the heat and simmer on low heat until you prepare the rest of the veggies (about 20-30 minutes).
How to cut the whole chicken for chicken soup.

What Chicken Parts to Use For The Soup

When choosing the type of chicken parts to use in soup, opt for more bones and connective tissues (cartilage, skin including fat) because the marrow in the bones ads much more flavor and body, plus collagen and essential amino acids that help sooth the intestinal walls.

2. Prepare And Add The Vegetables
  • Clean, peal and dice the vegetables. Add all those to the pot, one by one and simmer for 20 minutes until tender. Potatoes and noodles are usually a staple in chicken soups but since this is a GAPS compliant soup, I’m using cauliflower instead, and no grains.
  • Then add the acidic ingredients: crushed tomatoes, lemon juice and salt (babies 12 months+). Simmer for another 10-15 minutes and turn off the heat. Taste and adjust the seasonings to taste. Add more sourness (lemon juice) or salt if needed. If you don’t have any lemon juice, use some apple cider vinegar instead.
  • At this time you can add the fresh chopped herbs (parsley and dill) or other greens. Or you can save them and sprinkle on top of the soup bowl right before serving to your kids.
  • Note: Let the chicken soup sit for 20 minutes or more (in the pot) before serving, to allow the flavors to blend in better. It will taste even better the next day.

Tip For Avoiding Overly Cooked Meat

If you want the white chicken meat tenderly cooked, remove it from the pot after 30 minutes. Take it off the bones, and throw the bones, skin and remaining meat back into the soup to finish simmering. Add the saved white meat, chopped at the end.

Serve the soup as it is, or add some avocado for a more filling meal with healthy fats.

Quick Chicken Soup With Pre-made Chicken Stock

Bring the pre-made chicken stock to a boil. Add all ingredients, reduce the heat to medium-low and simmer until everything is cooked through and tender, about 20-30 minutes. If using raw chicken meat, add that to the pot before adding the vegetables. If you’re using already cooked chicken meat, add it when the vegetables are almost tender. Let the soup sit for 30 minutes before serving, to combine the flavors.

Chicken Soup Consistency For Babies

  1. 6-7 month old babies: puree in a blender to a smooth consistency.
  2. 8-9 month old babies: place in a food processor to get a finely chopped texture (not smooth as puree).
  3. 9-10 month old babies and up: serve as it is, chunky. It’s also great for baby lead weaning, as the baby picks the pieces from the soup with his/her fingers.
Puree the chicken soup for babies (6-9 months) in a blender for a smoother consistency.

How To Store

  • Store leftovers for 3-4 days in an air-tight container.
  • Freeze up to 3 months in an airtight container. Use glass jars, ice cube trays, or reusable silicone zip bags, they won’t leach harmful chemicals like plastics do.
  • Thaw / reheat – defrost overnight in the refrigerator and reheat on the stove at low temperature.

Leftover Chicken Meat From Soup

You probably won’t even use half the meat on the chicken for this baby chicken soup. So here’s a few ideas for things to make with the leftover cooked chicken:

  • Serve as finger food to your baby, especially if you’re doing baby led weaning.
  • Shred with 2 forks and add into a salad.
  • Add into an omelet as breakfast.
  • Mix into other baby purees and soups as a source of protein.
  • Add in casseroles.
  • Make chicken meatballs, patties, or fritters.
  • Chicken Crepe Rolls, as finger food, great for lunch boxes.

Chicken soup for children

Children's food should be, first of all, healthy, balanced, and benefit the growing body. Not the last place in baby food is occupied by soups. Chicken soup for children is not only a delicious first course, but also a source of nutrients that are easily absorbed by the child's body. Chicken soup for children under one year old will be best absorbed in the form of a light broth, without pieces of solid food. The baby's body is not yet adapted to many new foods, so chicken soup for a child is one of those few dishes that begins his acquaintance with adult cuisine. Despite the fact that this is, in principle, a fairly dietary soup, the Chicken Soup dish has a recipe for children.

trace elements

Chicken soup for a 1-year-old child is an indispensable source of useful microelements in a form convenient for the baby's digestion. In addition, it is quite simple and fast to make.

Chicken soup for a child 1 year old - recipe:

  • chicken fillet - 100 grams;
  • drinking water, ideally filtered - 400 milliliters;
  • non-fat milk - 50 milliliters;
  • quarter onion;
  • half a teaspoon of flour;
  • one teaspoon butter.

Boil the fillet for a quarter of an hour, adding chopped onion. While the meat is cooking, mix in one bowl parts of the flour and butter. Pour the broth into a separate pan, bring the fillet and onion to a puree state using a blender. Then add the resulting puree, flour mixture to the broth, and at the end slowly pour in the milk. Remove from heat as soon as it boils. Salt is optional in this recipe, but can be added if desired. Chicken soup for a 1 year old baby is ready to serve. Cool down to room temperature first.

Baby Chicken Liver Soup - suitable for the little ones

Baby Chicken Liver Soup is also ideal for the little ones. An important part of their diet are animal fats, which are found in excess in the liver. It is better to start with chicken liver or turkey liver.

  • chicken liver - 100 grams;
  • potatoes - one piece;
  • carrot - one piece;
  • onion - quarter;
  • buckwheat - four teaspoons;
  • quail eggs - four pieces;
  • drinking water - 400 milliliters.

Potatoes should be thoroughly washed several times to remove as much starch as possible, then finely chopped (but not mashed, just finely chopped). Cook until boiling and then reduce the gas a little. The liver, previously cleaned of all excess, is cut into several more pieces and added to the potatoes. Grind the onion and carrot on the fine side of the grater and also add to the pan. At the very end, add the washed buckwheat and cook until fully cooked, about fifteen minutes.

After that, drain the broth into a separate container, and bring the solid components to a puree state in a blender. Add broth if desired.

Quail eggs, or rather their yolk, are needed for decoration. Add the crumbled yolks to the already prepared soup.

Chicken breast soup for children - useful at any age

Chicken breast soup for children is offered from the age of one, but you need to look at your baby. Breast - the most protein-rich part of the chicken, will be useful at any age.

  • breast - 200 grams;
  • potatoes - two pieces;
  • carrot - one piece;
  • half onion;
  • butter - two teaspoons;
  • drinking water - 1.5 liters.

Rinse all ingredients several times in running water before cooking. Vegetables are cut into small cubes, and the breast is divided into several medium-sized pieces. Pour half the amount of water into the pan and cook the breast for about twenty minutes. Be sure to remove the resulting foam.

Remove the breast and drain the water. Boil the second part of the water and add meat and vegetables to it, then cook everything together for about ten minutes. Pour the broth into a separate bowl, and bring all parts of the soup to a puree in a blender. The amount of broth added is determined by eye. After - once again bring the resulting soup with chicken breast for a child to a boil, cool and serve.

Children's Chicken Noodle Soup - easy to digest and rich in minerals

Chicken vermicelli soup for children is very often found on the menu of preschools and schools. It is very easy to digest and rich in beneficial minerals and is also easy to make. Perfect for children's menu from the age of one year and older. There are also variations in delivery. For example, the meat can be served as chicken meatballs for children's soup.

  • chicken ham - one piece;
  • two green onions;
  • carrot - one piece;
  • potatoes - three pieces;
  • thin vermicelli - 50 grams;
  • parsley - half a bunch;
  • purified water - one liter.

Place the ham thoroughly washed under running water in half a liter of water and boil. Drain the first broth. Put new water and put onion feathers, parsley and meat into it. Add vegetables to the prepared broth and bring almost to readiness. Lastly, add vermicelli, hold on fire for another 10 minutes and turn off. Depending on the age of the child, the soup can be served as is, or ground with a blender.

Chicken soup with rice for children - an excellent first course

Chicken broth soup for a child is indispensable during illness. It helps to restore strength and prevents dehydration of the body, saturating it at the same time. An excellent first course at any time will be chicken soup with rice for children.

  • chicken leg - one piece;
  • carrot - one;
  • potatoes - two pieces;
  • round rice - 50 grams;
  • parsley - half a bunch;
  • bulb - one;
  • purified water - 700 milliliters.

Cut the peeled potatoes and onions into small cubes, chop the carrots on the smallest part of the grater. Pour half the water into the pan and boil the chicken, draining the first water. Put the second part of the water on the fire, add the meat along with all the other parts of the dish. Boil for about half an hour, removing scale, on the smallest fire. Add parsley to baby chicken rice soup before serving. Salt is added as desired.

Baby Chicken Noodle Soup - Perfect with homemade

Baby Chicken Noodle Soup is ideally made with homemade, freshly prepared noodles. Of course, more time will be spent on cooking, but the benefits will also increase.

  • chicken fillet - half a kilogram;
  • potatoes - four;
  • carrot - one;
  • bulb - one;
  • two hard-boiled eggs;
  • half a glass of flour;
  • vegetable oil - one tablespoon;
  • dill, bay leaf, salt to taste;
  • pure water - liter.

Boil chicken meat washed in water in half the amount of water according to the recipe. Pour the resulting broth and pour the meat with new water, bring it to a boil. Bay leaf is best added shortly before the meat is ready. When it boils, strain the broth and add the vegetables. Potatoes and onions should be small cubes, and carrots should be grated.

The noodle dough is being prepared while the vegetables are cooking. Grind the yolks with salt and mix with flour until an elastic dough is formed. It should not stick to your hands. Then randomly cut the noodles, preferably in strips no wider than two mm.

The noodles are added last and the dish is cooked for another ten minutes. After turning off, add dill.

Baby Broccoli Chicken Soup - The ultimate combination of nutrients

Baby Broccoli Chicken Soup is the perfect combination of healthy green carbs and chicken proteins. This dish can be not only exceptionally healthy, but also very tasty.

  • broccoli - 300 grams;
  • chicken leg - one;
  • carrots - one;
  • regular onion - one piece;
  • cream, 10% fat - two tablespoons;
  • dill and parsley;
  • liter of pure water.

First prepare the chicken broth in two stages. At the first, carefully washed chicken leg is poured with ½ of the water from the recipe and brought to a boil. We drain this water. Next, add meat, grated carrots and broccoli florets to the rest of the water. Boil for about ten minutes after boiling. A couple of minutes before full readiness, add parsley and dill, along with two tablespoons of cream. Should stand for about half an hour to set the taste. Also, it can be made in the form of a puree soup, but in this case, after boiling, the broth must be poured into another bowl, all solid ingredients blended and diluted with broth and cream. Great for younger kids, like chicken soup for a 2 year old.

Chicken Pumpkin Soup for Kids - Delicious

Chicken Pumpkin Soup for Kids is a favorite among many kids due to the sweet taste and yellow color of pumpkin. In this case, the nutrients of chicken and pumpkin are very well combined. Suitable for kids of any age, even three or four years old. The dish has a pleasant taste and the child will not need to be persuaded.

  • chopped pumpkin - 200 grams;
  • chicken fillet - 100 grams;
  • one carrot;
  • one potato;
  • one bulb;
  • butter - two tablespoons;
  • dill;
  • water - one liter.

Cooking chicken broth according to the above recipes. Cut the pumpkin, potatoes and onions into cubes, and a fairly large cut is also suitable for a pumpkin. Cook carrots and potatoes separately, after ten minutes add pumpkin and onions. Add the meat to the second broth and cook all the ingredients until tender. Then pour the broth into a cup, and beat everything else in a blender, adding the broth to taste. Add butter to the finished soup, and garnish with dill (if children eat this way).

Baby Chicken Puree Soup - Ideal

Baby Chicken Puree Soup can be made with any ingredients as shown in the recipes above. The most common will be options with vegetables (broccoli, pumpkin), ideal for young children. Chicken puree soup for children allows you to add to the dishes those ingredients that children often refuse to eat openly.

For the most basic chicken broth soup you will need:

  • chicken fillet - 100 grams;
  • carrot - one;
  • potatoes - one;
  • cream 10% - by eye and to taste;
  • purified water, for cooking - liter.

Rinse the fillet thoroughly and boil in two waters (discard the first broth). In the second broth, boil the fillet with vegetables, transfer the finished ingredients to the blender bowl and turn into a puree, first adding the cream, and if necessary, the broth.

Chicken soup for the youngest members of our society is an excellent dish both as a first course for older children and as a complementary food for very young children. For those who do not like vegetables, especially broccoli, it is better to choose the puree form, that is, mix all the ingredients. All recipes do not mention salt. The fact is that the need to consume salt at such a young age has not been proven.
