Breastfeeding a child in public places - is it normal? About three and a half thousand comments were caused by a simple question addressed to subscribers: “How do you like the open breastfeeding trend?”.

Opinions turned out to be polar opposites: while some consider the process to be purely personal or even unpleasant, others stand up for freedom in this natural and beautiful manifestation of motherhood. How to draw a line between the personal comfort of a mother with a child and the opinions of others? Should the intimate process take place away from prying eyes and remain a secret with seven seals? What about regular breastfeeding if you are not going to stay at home for the entire decree, but want to continue your usual lifestyle? How is the process treated in Russia and in the West? Vogue decided to deal with these and many other questions together with young and active mothers - join the discussion.

Private - not public?

Many of us are fond of watching celebrity pregnancies not only on Instagram - Emily Ratajkowski announced that she was expecting a baby, starring for the digital cover of American Vogue, and a pregnant Romy Strijd appeared on the November cover of last year in Vogue the Netherlands. We've also seen a plethora of photos from Katy Perry's unretouched shots to Nicki Minaj's professional photo shoot to the occasional pics of Gigi Hadid and Elsa Hosk in position. It is curious, but many still do not accept the fact that breastfeeding is the same natural process as pregnancy and motherhood themselves, which for the most part do without negativity. Hence the wave of angry comments in the spirit: “Why photograph this at all?”.

The founder of the Ashram well-being space and the author of the #FollowMeTo project, Natalia Osmann, believes that this is a matter of personal boundaries: “Any position on breastfeeding in public speaks only about the internal states of a person. For my part, I can say that I encountered more embarrassment at those moments when my mother bared her breasts in front of me and began to feed the child. Natalia adds that before and after pregnancy, her attitude to the process has not changed: “I am very careful about breastfeeding, because I think that this process, like the birth of a child, is very sacred. It's quite intimate, both energetically and emotionally and physiologically. And it seems to me that feeding should remain only between mother and child. I understand that many people think this is natural, but, as for me, there are things that you don’t have to do in public places. Fortunately, there are now a lot of special locations in the center of Moscow for this - we even made a small guide with my team where you can swaddle and feed your baby in the city. At the moment I am breastfeeding and prefer to be alone with the baby in changing rooms or in the car. I can say that this is quite comfortable, because immediately after the birth of the baby, we continued to lead our active social life and took the child with us everywhere.”

Attitudes towards feeding in the West

But, of course, the experience of different mothers is different - this is influenced by a lot of factors, from internal boundaries and the degree of constraint to the current location. For example, breastfeeding in public has a legal status in a number of countries: in Australia, parts of the US and Europe, women have the legal right to breastfeed even in the workplace. In the Philippines, for example, breastfeeding is protected by the Enhanced Breastfeeding Act, which requires employers to allow breastfeeding or pumping breaks for nursing workers. In Saudi Arabia, while women cannot show any part of their bodies in public, breastfeeding is an exception. Ireland also has a law that protects women from discrimination and harassment while breastfeeding, and it is an offense to suggest that a breastfeeding mother stop the process, move to another place or take refuge in a public place. The same rule applies in the UK.

Women who gave birth in the West confirm this trend. “It is important to note that I gave birth to Mia in Miami, respectively, the first three or four months after that we lived in America. And of course, there already exists a culture of public breastfeeding. It is absolutely normal to meet a girl in a restaurant or on a street terrace who communicates during a meeting with friends and feeds her child at the same time. This is not condemned by society in any way, rather, it is everywhere, ”Alina Chichina, co-founder of the Re-feel wellness brand and Setters communication agency, shares her experience. - Previously, I did not react in any way to children, or to pregnant women, or to nursing mothers, all the more so. But when you yourself go through this new path for yourself, then the wondrous world of motherhood opens up, including the process of feeding. It was in America that my new focus of attention was formed: I saw a huge number of breastfeeding women and sometimes I myself fed the baby on the street. All because with the advent of our daughter, we did not become recluses and kept our habitually high pace of life: my husband and I had a lot of communications, business processes, including moments of being on the street, - one way or another, I could not help but encounter the fact that sometimes I had to feed the child in a public place.

Blogger and young mother Alexandra Markina also confirms that the reaction to breastfeeding in the States and in Russia is different: problems. Once I was feeding a child in the toilet, a girl came up to me and said: “Why are you feeding here? Go to the hall, it's more convenient there. Can I help you?". In general, it is nice to hear support from women, because even this topic, oddly enough, is mostly condemned by them. It shouldn't be like this - we should all support each other."

And there really is something to help mothers. While the practice of breastfeeding may be legal or socially acceptable, some are nonetheless reluctant to open their breasts for public feeding due to negative comments from society. Discomfort with the idea of breastfeeding in public has been cited in a number of studies as a reason why some choose not to start breastfeeding at all or plan to cut it down significantly. Other women prefer to bottle feed with expressed milk when they are away from home. And anxiety about breastfeeding in the presence of other people especially affects the duration of lactation in women with self-doubt. Research shows that this fear is most common in young women, low-income women, and immigrant women in Western countries.

Importance of supporting breastfeeding mothers

Meanwhile, breastfeeding is necessary to maintain the health of mother, child and, therefore, the entire population. In addition to nutrition, breast milk provides individual immune protection and shapes the developing microbiome. That is why doctors recommend exclusively breastfeeding a newborn for at least six months, and in the absence of pathologies, another 18 months, followed by complementary foods. In order to popularize this process, which is necessary for the health and development of the child, it must become more visible in society, including social networks - the border between the virtual and real world is already rather arbitrary, isn't it? But not all new mothers want to lead this movement and establish breastfeeding in modern culture by their own example.

There are several reasons for this. According to Alexandra Markina, it is more convenient for her to retire during feeding for her own comfort and tranquility. “The so-called “feeding” side must understand that they can create discomfort for themselves by catching judgmental glances. Therefore, it is better to stock up on a light towel or diaper that will cover the chest in the process. And the “observing” side needs to treat this with understanding and imagine that you are on a diet, and Napoleon is appetizingly eaten at the next table. Why don't you just watch and get annoyed with what is happening, which will only last five to ten minutes? And remember that not every baby takes a bottle, and mothers also sometimes want to have lunch with friends. And it’s not always possible to physically stand in a cramped toilet with a baby in her arms: in such situations, you have to feed on the spot. America helped me a lot in this regard. But I know that girls in our country are still often afraid of condemnation - I heard unpleasant stories when women were asked to leave the institution or made comments. It seems to me that we all live in a modern society where such situations need to be eradicated.”

Popular

For Natalia Osmann, this is not so much a matter of embarrassment as of the intimacy of the process and inner comfort: “For me, feeding is something special, and I can’t imagine how it is possible to do this with people. Of course, it is important to build a free society in which any expression of freedom will not be condemned. But I'm talking about something else, namely, my personal desire to make the process of communication with the child at the time of feeding more sacred and solitary.

“I can say that I am a person who loves to keep intimate moments intimate in every sense, and therefore for me feeding has become a process that completely belonged to me and my child. Moreover, I wanted to somehow “ground myself” in this state, without trying to connect one with the other: if I was at a meeting with friends and understood that the moment of feeding was coming, I simply stepped aside or sat down from a large crowd of people and calmly fed the baby. I was more comfortable that there were no extra eyes and extra noise - there was me, my daughter and this process between us, ”adds Alina Chichina.

Can we get somewhere between feeding a baby in a cramped, uncomfortable space away from prying eyes (or worse, the need for a mother to spend the entire breastfeeding period at home) and in the middle of a bustling outdoor park or food court? Of course - the truth, you need to prepare for the fact that changes in society will not be lightning fast. Firstly, we all should remove the stigma from the partially naked female body and stop blaming mothers for showing the absolutely natural process of their lives: for these shifts in the minds of conservatives, it’s worth thanking the brave celebrities who are against the objectification of both breasts and breasts. and feeding itself. And secondly, mothers need support from both society and the state - responsible business owners should think more often about creating conditions for comfortable feeding and swaddling babies in restaurants, shops and other public places, while the law should be on mother's side and protect her from attacks and persecution. Everyone should be informed about the importance of breastfeeding: social campaigns in schools, universities, in the media and social networks could greatly speed up the process and reassure new mothers. And it is also important for every woman to remember her rights: in Russia, breastfeeding in public places is not prohibited, so you can feed your child without hesitation in the way that is comfortable for both of you in the first place, while the culture of awareness and tolerance gradually begins to bear fruit.

Advice from Moms

“The important thing here is to check your internal compass and understand what fits your principles and what doesn't. And if feeding a child in a public place is an absolutely normal process for you, then it should not embarrass you, says Alina Chichina. - During feeding, I wore comfortable clothes that make the process as comfortable as possible for mom and, of course, for the baby. Plus, I always had a small tippet or scarf with me: it allows you to make feeding invisible to everyone and provide the baby with a comfortable environment, so that he would be cool first of all.

Popular

“Because we are travelers and have already started flying, I often feed my baby on the plane because he is hungry or to keep his ears from blocking up. I found the way out of the situation as follows: since I love and collect different scarves, my large cashmere Hermès always travels with me. We cover ourselves with the child, and I calmly feed him. A great alternative to special nursing clothes,” says Natalia Osmann.

“Please don't paint yourself into a corner about feeding in a public place. Choose those places where you will know in advance that you are comfortable in them. Carry diapers with you, with which you can cover your chest from strangers. If the process is restless, then, of course, it is better to retire or go outside to calm the child. Indeed, otherwise you will worry, and you should not be nervous, ”concludes Alexandra Markina, and we subscribe to every word and advise you to do only as you feel comfortable here and now, without looking back at the opinions of others.
