The right nutrition early in your kid goat’s life can set the stage for their lifetime performance. Choosing the right milk replacer for your kid goats can be a daunting task. Consider these tips to feel confident in choosing what’s best for your goat herd.
Feeding milk replacer allows you to market doe’s milk and helps grow big, vigorous kids who can stand out in the showring, parlor or breeding herd. Consider feeding kid milk replacer to:
- Dairy goat kids.
- Orphan, unclaimed or extra kids in large litters.
- Weak or small kids.
- Prevent the spread of Caprine Arthritis Encephalitis (CAE) to kids.
2. Select a Quality Formulation.
You will want to choose a milk replacer that closely resembles doe’s milk and is specially formulated for goats. While multispecies milk replacers are available, not all of them will properly meet your goat’s nutritional needs.
By choosing a kid-specific milk replacer such as LAND O LAKES® Doe’s Match® Kid Milk Replacer, you can ensure your kids are getting a balance of 25% protein and 28% fat to mimic doe’s milk and provide nutritional value for efficient growth. In fact, research has shown that kids fed LAND O LAKES® Doe’s Match® kid milk replacer a greater average daily gain at 0.43 lb. per day as compared to 0.37 lb. per day to kids that are naturally reared.1
Milk replacer should be fed on day two after feeding colostrum. At the same time, it’s important to provide kids with fresh, clean water along with a free-choice, high-quality dry feed. Start by feeding a half pint of milk replacer mixture three to four times a day for the first three days. Gradually decrease the number of feedings and increase the volume fed per feeding. Feed for at least four to six weeks of age. Adjust feeding rates according to age, bodyweight and growth goals.
A milk replacer with poor quality ingredients can cause milk replacer to separate during the mixing process, leading to unbalanced nutrition. To get the most out of your milk replacer choose a quality formulation that is tested for consistent mixing and nutrition. Additionally, proper mixing techniques are key. First, start with a water temperature between 110-120°F. Next, weigh your milk replacer powder to ensure accurate mixing. Lastly, once mixed, check the temperature again. It should be 105°F when fed.

How to Select a Milk Replacer for Your Baby Goats
Milk replacer is vital to keeping your goat kids healthy and growing; however, selecting and feeding the right milk replacer can be a daunting task. But with the right background information, you can feel confident that you’re choosing what’s best for your goats.
What type of milk replacer should I look for?
You will want to choose a milk replacer that closely resembles doe’s milk. Look for one that is specially formulated for goats. Multispecies milk replacers are available, but not all of them will fit your goat’s nutritional needs. The right milk replacer will provide an optimal blend of energy (carbohydrates and fat), protein, vitamins, and minerals.
Which ingredients are most important on the label?
- Crude Protein and Crude Fat
- Crude protein and fat are the most important nutrients for the growth and development of goat kids. The guaranteed analysis on the milk replacer label will include a breakdown of these nutrients. Crude protein is listed first, followed by crude fat. For example, a 26:20 goat milk replacer will contain 26 percent crude protein and 20 percent crude fat.
- Protein sources in all-milk milk replacers include whey products and derivatives, skim milk, casein, and sodium or calcium caseinate. Typical fat sources include whole milkfat, lard, choice white grease, and soy, palm, or coconut oil. Milk fat, lard, and lesser amounts of palm or coconut oil are the best fat sources.
- Crude Fiber
- Crude fiber usually indicates the protein source. If the crude fiber is above 0.15 percent, it indicates there may be a plant-based protein source in addition to the milk-derived proteins. Consider a milk-derived protein source, which most closely mimics a doe’s natural milk.
- Other Ingredients
- Other ingredients include vitamin and mineral supplements, preservatives, and flavors. You’ll want a milk replacer with trace minerals and B-complex vitamins because they are important for your baby goats’ growth. Some milk replacers also include probiotics to support the digestive system.
How Much Milk Replacer Should I Buy?
Keeping your milk replacer fresh is important. Since goat milk replacers come in different-size packages, choose a size by the number of goat kids you’re expecting. Read the feeding directions to estimate how much milk replacer you will need.
Feeding: What Do I Need to Know?
Feed milk replacer 24–48 hours after birth, once colostrum feedings are complete. Milk replacer will be your goat kid’s primary source of nutrition until weaning.
Feed milk replacer by bottle or pail three times per day from two to 10 days of age. Smaller, more frequent feedings can help increase digestibility and minimize digestive upset. You can increase the total volume fed on day 11 through weaning.
Most milk replacer packaging contains detailed feeding instructions. They should be easy to understand and outline feeding through the weaning phase.
Mixing and Feeding Tips:
- Measure milk replacer powder by weight with a hanging scale
- Always mix until the powder dissolves completely
- For large batches, add the powder before adding the warm water (110° Fahrenheit), then add enough water to bring the mixture to volume
- Follow the package directions regarding the recommended mixing temperature
- Do not mix new milk replacer with product that has been sitting out unrefrigerated
- Feed milk replacer at your kids’ body temperature (90°–100° Fahrenheit)
- Wash your bottles and nipples in hot, soapy water and rinse well after every feeding
- Let equipment dry thoroughly between feedings
- Throw out nipples with cracks or worn holes
Following these instructions and tips will help keep your baby goats healthy and growing.

- Rapid adaptation of lambs and kids to plant foods; Ensuring a consistently high increase in live weight of animals;
- Laying the right foundation in animal development;
- Formation of strong immunity and disclosure of genetic potential;
- Increasing the safety and resistance of the body of kids and lambs to bacteria and viruses;
- Keeping young stock in good condition;
- Obtaining healthy, properly developed young animals.
COMPOSITION
Dry milk whey, dry whey-fat food mixture; vegetable protein; concentrated feed premix, probiotic feed additive, flavor, organic acids.
Metabolic energy: 4560.0 kcal/19.1 MJ.
ACTION
The balanced composition of the substitute is a source of easily digestible proteins and energy, adapted to the milk of sheep and goats, contains a residual amount of fat that can be quickly digested. Lambs and kids that have not received colostrum have a reduced resistance and, if they do not die, they lag behind their peers in growth and get sick. The product includes pasteurized dairy components, in which all pathogenic microorganisms are destroyed.
DOSAGE AND METHOD OF APPLICATION
Reconstitution (dilution) is carried out by dissolving 1 kg of dry Milk Replacer in warm tap water (temperature 50-55°C) in the ratio 1:8 for lambs and 1:9 for kids. Thoroughly dilute until a homogeneous emulsion is obtained. Let stand for 3-5 minutes, then stir thoroughly again. The finished product at a temperature of 38-40 ° C is fed to lambs / kids.
It is imperative that animals have constant access to water.
SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS
In terms of safety for life, animal health and the environment, milk replacer must comply with veterinary and sanitary requirements approved in the prescribed manner. Failure to comply with the proportions indicated in the instructions can cause disruption of the intestines and lead to undesirable consequences. To prepare a substitute, you need to take clean dishes, it is advisable to scald the container with boiling water. Improper dilution of milk replacer leads to its entry into the rumen and diarrhea.
SIDE EFFECTS
There were no side effects and complications when using the product in recommended doses, no contraindications were found. Do not use on other animal species. Products from animals are used without restrictions.
PACKAGING
The product is packed in a kraft bag with a polyethylene liner, net weight 10kg.
