Baby ahoy!

If there is a little sailor or sailorette onboard the mothership, it’s a great time to have a nautical themed baby shower!

Anchor down and start planning because the seas of baby shower planning can be rough!

It’s probably a good idea to start with getting a planner to keep organized.

Invitations

Once you have completed your guest list, it’s time to start looking for invitations to send out.

Before you set sail to the store, try surfing the net first; you are bound to find a much better deal on something that you can have personalized for the occasion!

I love ordering invitations from online retailers like Etsy. You can find invites that are perfect for a nautical themed baby shower and you will not find anything like it at a store!

You can also find great custom invites, printed and mailed right to your front door, from Zazzle. These nautical baby shower invitations would be the perfect way to kick off your nautical themed shower!

Special thanks to our friends at Lynlees.com for this adorable design!

Decorations

For a nautical themed baby shower, dark blue is a must!  You can choose to do dark blue and white, different shade of blue, blue and yellow, whatever color scheme you desire, but you must have a color to symbolize the deep blue sea!

Be sure to use contrasting colors when picking out tableware, balloons and streamers so that everything the colors pop rather than blend together.

If you are fishing for some ideas to decorate the shower, here are a few other great nautical decorations ideas:

  • Nets with seashells:  Drape nets at random on tables and walls, and don’t forget a few sea critters!  Lace some crabs, sea shells, star fish, fishing bobbers and whatever else someone might find in the sea!  Even an old boot in the net would do!

  • Anchors and lifesavers:  These belong everywhere, whether they’re large and hanging on the wall, or small and used as table accents.

  • Sailboat:  You need sailboats, period.  Making large sailboats from materials such as cardstock or poster boards are decorative and make wonderful candy or chip bowls!  It’s like catching two fish with one hook!

Food

When it comes to the food at a nautical themed baby shower, it’s a sailor’s life, indeed!  Forget about the fish that got away and serve up these delicious treats:

  • Crabby cakes:  Need an appetizer idea?  Crab cakes are always a winner and you can make them in a pinch!

  • Sailboat deviled eggs:  These are deviled eggs with a piece of vegetable, such as a bell pepper, cut into a triangle and stuck on top to look like a sail.  Cute!

  • Set sail Jell-O:  Make blue Jell-O in individual cups and top it with a slice of orange with a sail on top, to look like sailboats on the sea!  The sail can easily be made by gluing a little, white triangle piece of paper to a toothpick.

  • Sailor Juice:  Avoid scurvy with this delicious fresh-squeezed lemonade with a twist of sprite!

Tip: Use brown sugar to plate your sweets!
It looks just like beach sand, but tastes so much better!

Games

If the idea of only playing pen-and-paper baby shower games shivers your timbers, then you’ve come to the right place!  If you need some more game ideas, here’s a few games to keep your shipmates’ boredom at bay:

  • Walk the plank:  Give the player an armful of baby dolls to carry down a straight line after they get spun around for 5-10 seconds.  Whoever makes it farthest with the most babies in their arms wins!  As soon as one foot deviates from the line, this is their distance.

  • Sink or swim:  This is a twist on the old clothespin game!  Instead of a clothespin, each person gets a necklace with a life  preserver charm on it, and if you say the word “baby” someone can take away your life preserver!  Whoever collects the most life preservers wins!

  • Sand baby sculptures:  This is a team game:  have enough deep trays of sand laid out for all of your guests divided into teams of three or four.  Everyone has just 10 minutes to sculpt the best looking sand baby they can!

Favors

Come sail away, but don’t forget the favors!  Before you dock the ship, be sure to give out something as a way of saying “thank you!”

There is generally two types of favors:  Keepsakes and edibles.

You can never go wrong with something sweet such as candy in a cute, themed tin (lifesavers would be my candy of choice), but if you want to really say thanks, hand out anchor keychains or sailboat votive candles!

Oh, and don’t forget to wish them “smooth sailin’ mateys!”

Fish and seafood dishes: recipes

Delight of the sea soul: fish and seafood dishes

May never ceases to delight with holidays, now on a global scale. On May 7, Portugal celebrates the Day of the Man of the Sea and prepare fish and seafood dishes on this occasion. We invite you to join this delicious tradition and create your own sea menu.

Salmon in gold

Simple and tasty fish dishes will decorate both everyday and festive tables. Especially if it's salmon baked in foil. To prepare it, we need 5-6 steaks, which we lightly salt and pour plenty of lemon juice. We make pockets from food foil, grease them with oil and place fish steaks inside. Sprinkle dill on top, put tomato circles. Tightly close the edges of the foil and place the steaks in an oven preheated to 180 ° C for 30 minutes. 5 minutes before the end of cooking, take out the salmon, carefully open the foil envelopes and return to the oven.

Covered sea bass

Various marinades are often used to prepare fish dishes. They make the fish juicy and soft, and its taste is rich. We take 1 kg of sea bass fillet, cut into portioned pieces, grease them with olive oil, put them on a baking sheet with parchment and bake at a temperature of 180 ° C until golden brown. In the meantime, cut 4 tomatoes into medium pieces, chop 4 cloves of garlic and a bunch of dill. Simmer everything together in a pan for 5-6 minutes. Add 2 tbsp. l. tomato sauce, 50 ml dry white wine, ½ tsp. paprika, salt and pepper to taste, simmer over medium heat for 10 minutes. We spread the baked sea bass in a deep frying pan, pour the marinade over it and keep it on low heat for 5 minutes.

Tandem of cod and champignons

Composing a seafood menu, you can include stuffed fish in it. A cod carcass weighing no more than 1 kg is cleaned, gutted, washed and dried. Soak two slices of white bread in milk. Dice the onion and 250 g of champignons, fry them in butter. We add here 2 tbsp. l. dry white wine, salt and pepper to taste, then simmer until the liquid has completely evaporated. Add swollen bread, an egg, 6 sprigs of parsley to the mushrooms, mix thoroughly and cool. We stuff the fish with the resulting mixture, tie it with twine, put it on a foil greased with oil. Pour lemon juice over the cod, cover with lemon slices and bake for 20–25 minutes at 180 ° C directly on the wire rack in the oven. Look for more fish recipes, photos and step-by-step descriptions on our website.

Squids on the lawn

A complete seafood menu is complete without seafood. The simplest and most delicious seafood dishes are salads that are prepared in haste. We wash 300-400 g of squid carcasses, clean them from films and chitin, remove all the insides. We stand them in boiling salted water for no more than a minute and recline them in a colander. While the squids are cooling, chop 300 g of Chinese cabbage and a bunch of dill, a few green onion feathers, cut carrots into strips, cut cucumbers into circles. We combine all the vegetables in a deep bowl, add the squid cut into strips and mix. Season the salad with a pinch of salt, lemon juice and olive oil, mix again.

Shrimps and company

How to cook a seafood dish more difficult? Try making a gourmet shrimp soup. To do this, we clean 500 g of shrimp, remove the heads and cut the carcasses in half. Cut into cubes 200 g of champignons and a large tomato. Finely chop an onion, a clove of garlic and a couple of celery stalks. Mix all the vegetables in a saucepan with olive oil, add 2-3 sprigs of thyme, salt and pepper to taste, and then fry them until golden brown. Pour 50 ml of dry white wine into the pan and continue to simmer until the liquid is reduced by half. Add 300 ml of chicken broth, spread the shrimp and cook for 10 minutes. At the end, we introduce 100 ml of heavy cream and ½ tsp. turmeric. Keep the soup on fire for another minute and remove from the stove.

Italian shellfish vacation

In addition to appetizers and soups, delicious seafood recipes include hot dishes. Spaghetti with seafood is a win-win option for any occasion. First of all, boil 250 g of pasta in salted water to your taste. In the meantime, cut the red chilli in half, remove the seeds and partitions, cut it into half rings. Remove the skin from two fleshy tomatoes and cut into cubes. Put the chili pepper and 2 cloves of garlic, crushed with a knife, in a preheated pan with olive oil. After 2 minutes, take out the garlic and pour 500 g of a sea cocktail - a mixture of shrimp, squid, octopus and mussels. After another couple of minutes, add tomatoes, parsley, a pinch of salt and pepper, simmer the sauce for 3 minutes. At the end, we combine it with ready-made spaghetti, mix and flavor 3 tbsp. l. olive oil.

These and many other seafood dishes, as well as recipes from our readers, are presented on the Eat at Home! portal. You can add your signature recipes to this collection too!

Physiotherapy in pediatrics

Physiotherapeutic methods of treatment in pediatrics are widely used. Many types of influences are applied already from the first days after the birth of a child.

Physiotherapy gives good results in the treatment of a sufficient number of diseases. There are many techniques used to combat various pathologies. The effectiveness of this treatment is supported by scientific research.

However, you need to be aware that procedures are prescribed differently for children than for adults. It is necessary to follow certain rules, following which will help to get the maximum benefit from the treatment and avoid the possible occurrence of negative reactions.

Peculiarities of a child's organism

Functional state, structure of tissues and physiology of a child's organism have a number of differences from an adult's and change as a person matures and grows. These features are necessarily taken into account when determining a specific therapeutic factor, selecting the parameters of exposure, localization and time of the procedure.

  • The thickness and number of cell layers of the skin is lower than in adults. The epidermis is highly hydrophilic. The thinness and friability of children's skin should be considered individually.
  • The nervous system is characterized by the accelerated formation of reflexes, the predominance of excitatory processes over inhibitory ones. In addition, the effect of physical factors is not limited to the area of treatment, but spreads along nerve fibers to adjacent segments of the spinal cord faster and wider than in adults.
  • Less bone density threatens greater susceptibility to injury. Bone tissue has a high water content, which allows the energy of physical factors to penetrate deeper and have a pronounced effect.
  • Large (compared to an adult body) heart size, thinner and looser muscle fibers. Certain features of the physiology of cardiac activity.
  • Short and narrow nasal passages, underdeveloped paranasal sinuses, poor moistening of the respiratory tract.
  • Wide renal pelvis and ureters, insufficient filtration capacity of the renal glomeruli.

Peculiarities of prescribing physiotherapeutic treatment in pediatrics

In order for the treatment to be as effective as possible, it is necessary to follow a number of rules and remember certain features when prescribing and performing physiotherapeutic procedures.

  • A child's body responds to treatment faster than an adult.
  • The impact on one area can be repeated no earlier than after 2 months. If it is necessary to conduct a second course of treatment at the same site, another physical factor should be chosen.
  • Children are prescribed, as a rule, one healing factor for a course of treatment, since their body is more susceptible to physiotherapeutic effects, and the combined effect of preformed (hardware) physical factors enhances the effect of each of them separately. If it is necessary to influence two factors, the time interval between procedures should be at least 2 hours.
  • Dose the intensity of the therapeutic factor should be starting from the minimum parameters, gradually increasing to the required. They are always less than in the treatment of adult patients.
  • In pediatrics, only local procedures are recommended, it is better to refuse general ones.
  • The procedure time is always shorter than for adults, because the child's body is able to respond to treatment faster and gets tired faster.
  • It is preferable to prescribe procedures in a pulsed, softer mode compared to continuous.
  • Exposure should be carried out in the presence of a physician.
  • If there is any negative change in the condition of a small patient, treatment must be interrupted.
  • For young children, frightening methods are not used: electrosleep using the orbital-occipital technique, darsonvalization in the spark mode, intranasal electrophoresis, etc.
  • It is not recommended to prescribe laser radiation to a child without special need, as it has a powerful biostimulating effect and can cause unpredictable reactions from the child's body.

Combination of physiotherapy methods

Physiotherapy methods can be combined according to the following schemes:

  • 1 type of apparatus treatment + massage;
  • 1 session of apparatus treatment + 1 hydrotherapy procedure;
  • 1 hardware treatment + 1 heat treatment.

In some cases, a combination of two therapeutic hardware (preformed) factors is acceptable.

Restrictions for pediatric physiotherapy

Physiotherapy cannot be carried out:

  • if the child is mentally or physically overtired;
  • less than 30-40 minutes before a meal and 1 hour after a meal;
  • during or immediately after an acute infectious disease;
  • on the bone growth zone, projection of the heart, hollow and endocrine organs;
  • for bleeding tendency;
  • with reduced body weight;
  • on areas with a violation of the integrity of the skin;
  • in the presence of purulent-inflammatory diseases, with the risk of dissemination of the disease;
  • with a decrease in the adaptive capacity of the body;
  • with identified intolerance to the physical factor.

Children benefit from balneotherapy, spa treatment, thermotherapy, medical massage, magnetotherapy, phototherapy, ultraviolet radiation of long and medium wave spectrum, sinusoidal modulated currents.

Electrotherapy

The electrodes are carefully fixed with elastic bandages. Contact pads must be used thicker than for adults. After the procedure, it is recommended to lubricate the skin with oils or a greasy baby cream to moisturize and nourish the layers of the dermis, because the current has a local irritating effect.

Before and after each session, the nurse should carefully examine the child's skin for possible damage.

Most often in pediatrics, sinusoidal modulated currents (from three months) are used in an alternating mode, including for electrical stimulation.

Fluctuorization is prescribed for children from six months of age.

Galvanic current is used for interstitial electrophoresis (from the first days of life), galvanic collar according to Shcherbak (from 2 years old) or electrophoresis according to Vermel (from the newborn period).

Ultraton therapy and darsonvalization are prescribed in pediatrics from the age of two. Ultraton therapy is preferable due to the good thermal effect and less pronounced irritant effect. For children, the procedure is carried out according to the contact technique or a gauze napkin is used to create a stable gap. The treatment takes place at low or medium intensity, the session time depends on the age of the child.

Electrosleep is used from 2-3 years old according to the fronto-occipital technique. Session time is from 15 minutes to 1 hour.

Diadynamic currents have a more pronounced irritant effect on the child's skin, so they are used less frequently than amplipulse therapy. The technique is prescribed from 2-3 years.

Phototherapy

This method of treatment is widely used in pediatrics, because if the procedure is carried out correctly, it does not cause negative reactions on the part of the child's body and has a beneficial effect on it.

In pediatrics, from the first days of a child's life, infrared, red, blue spectra of light radiation are often used.

Newborns with hemolytic disease are treated with exposure to blue light in a specific regimen.

Ultraviolet irradiation

This type of physiotherapy is used in children from birth for the prevention and treatment of many pathologies.

There are general and local methods.

The general technique in the medium or long wavelength range is used for skin diseases and for the prevention of rickets. Local UVI is prescribed for diseases of the upper respiratory tract, certain skin diseases, etc.

Before starting treatment, always calculate the child's individual biodose using a biodosimeter to determine the treatment time.

If an erythemal dose of UV radiation is required, use a perforated oilcloth to soften the effect of ultraviolet radiation on the skin.

General contraindications for this type of treatment. In addition, UVR is not used for low hemoglobin levels, navel lesions, hypercalcemia.

Laser therapy is prescribed no earlier than two years of age.

Treatment with electric, magnetic and electromagnetic fields

Magnetotherapy has a beneficial effect on the child's body, is widely used for injuries, joint damage and other pathologies. A low-frequency magnetic field is prescribed from 1 year, high-frequency - from 5 years.

Ultra high frequency electromagnetic field (UHF) is used to treat children from the first days of life, preference is given to non-thermal dosages (up to 15 W). From 1 year to 3 years, the power increases to 20 W, from 3 to 7 years - up to 40 W, over 7 years - up to 60 W. When exposed to the head area in the treatment of preschool children, the maximum power is 20 W, for schoolchildren - 30 W. To maintain a stable gap between the emitter and the surface of the body, a gasket of a certain thickness is placed, everything is fixed with elastic bandages.

Treatment time is 8 to 15 minutes.

Inductothermia is administered with a gap of about 1.5 cm through an electrotherapy cloth pad, the procedure lasts no more than 12 minutes.

The contact method of exposure is also used when prescribing microwave therapy for pathology of the ENT organs, superficial inflammatory diseases of the skin and subcutaneous fat.

Franklinization (exposure to an electric field) is prescribed from the age of 14-15 and is used in neurology, pulmonology, and surgery.

Ultrasound therapy

Used from the first month of life in pathology of the musculoskeletal system. The intensity and time of exposure is selected individually. In children under the age of 1 year, the density of ultrasound is about 0.05 W / cm², at 1 year old, during the procedure, the ultrasound power cannot be more than 0.1 W / cm². As children grow, it increases, but cannot be more than 0.6 W / cm².

Thermal treatment

Thermal physical factors are actively used in pediatrics, which have a beneficial effect on the child's body.

Ozokerite and paraffin treatment is applied from 6 months. Mud therapy is prescribed from 2-3 years.

Indications for these physical factors are chronic inflammation, conditions after traumatic injuries and acute diseases. The intensity of thermal exposure should be less than during the procedures for adults, and the session time is 15-20 minutes. The course of treatment is designed for 5-8 procedures. It can be repeated after 2-3 months.

Balneotherapy

Various general or local baths have a positive effect on children's health: pearl, coniferous, sea, underwater massage. Souls are not used in children's practice, because they have an exciting effect on the central nervous system.

Aerosol therapy

Alkaline and heat-moist inhalations are prescribed for diseases of the ENT organs from the first days after birth. Medicines are used with great care, because the child's body is prone to the development of allergic reactions.

Massage

Massage is used for a variety of pathologies from the first days of the birth of a small patient, as well as preventively in a planned manner.
