Frozen foods for baby led weaning

The Ultimate List of Baby Led Weaning Freezer Recipes

Having a freezer full of nutritious baby led weaning food, will totally save your sanity! It is by far the single best thing I ever did when I started weaning my kids. Plus, the food is great for the rest of the family as well. So one meal for everyone! Stocking up the freezer is also a great way to use up fresh ingredients and have yummy food for the days you might need it the very most. We cook a lot of double dinners like pasta sauce for example, then eat one fresh and freeze the other one. You will also be really surprised how quickly the freezer fills up when you do this.

My Favourite Baby Led Weaning Recipes

Some of my favourite finger food recipe just so happen to be freezer-friendly recipe for babies too! The entire list below are perfect to start baby led weaning and lot’s are ones that I gave Oscar from when he was just 6 months old. They are also a great one to build up a stash if you are starting weaning in a month or so as your baby is probably not quite mobile yet. Believe me, when they start moving you will get less and less done every day. It’s just the norm when it comes to being a parent.

Savoury Freezer Foods

Irish Potato Cabbage & Carrot Hash Browns

Hash browns can be frozen after they are completely cooled. Separate with parchment paper and place in a freezer bag. Reheat in the oven to crisp.

Vegan Quiche – Tofu, Spinach & Mushroom

Quiche freezes beautifully! Cool completely and place in a freezer bag or container. Reheat in microwave for about 20-30 seconds from frozen or thaw in the refrigerator and serve cold.

Colcannon Nuggets

These nuggets are best when frozen before cooking. You can form the nuggets on a cookie sheet. Then freeze the nuggets on the cookies sheet until firm. Once the nuggets are firm you can transfer to a freezer bag or container. Reheat as directed in the recipe, however, add a few additional minutes to the cooking time.

Pea & Spinach Pancakes

As you’ll notice below, pancakes are one of my favourite freezer foods for baby led weaning! They freeze brilliantly! Cool pancakes completely on a wire rack, then stack the pancakes with a small bit of parchment paper between each (this keeps them from sticking together in the freezer). Place the pancakes into an airtight freezer bag and freeze for up to 3 months! Reheat in the toaster (sometimes pop them 2times) or in the microwave for 10-15 seconds.

Chickpea & Roasted Carrot Pancakes

Cool pancakes completely on a wire rack, then stack the pancakes with a small bit of parchment paper between each (this keeps them from sticking together in the freezer). Place the pancakes into an airtight freezer bag and freeze for up to 3 months! Reheat in the toaster (sometimes pop them 2times) or in the microwave for 20-25 seconds.

Salmon Nuggets for Baby Led Weaning

Make a double batch of these and freeze right after breading (providing your fish has not already been frozen). When you are ready to use them, just remove from the freezer, defrost and heat in the oven as per the instructions in the recipe.

Savoury Butternut Squash and Goats Cheese Pancakes

Cool completely, then stack the pancakes with a small bit of parchment paper between each (this keeps them from sticking together in the freezer). Place the pancakes into an airtight freezer bag and freeze for up to 3 months! Reheat in the toaster (sometimes pop them 2times) or in the microwave for 15-25 seconds.

Vegetable Pancakes

Cool pancakes completely on a wire rack, then stack the pancakes with a small bit of parchment paper between each (this keeps them from sticking together in the freezer). Place the pancakes into an airtight freezer bag and freeze for up to 3 months! Reheat vegetable pancakes in the oven at about 180C (350F) for 7-10 min.

Vegan Curried Butternut Squash Soup

Smooth soups like this one freeze well. You’ll want to cool the soup completely in the refrigerator (about 2 hours) before freezing to avoid freezer burn. Remove the lid of your cooled container and wipe off the bit of moisture that has collected on the back of the lid. Reseal the container for freezing or pour into a freezer bag or large ice cube trays (for baby portions). Freeze for up to 2 months. Since soup is full of moisture, it tends to get ice crystals (freezer burn) sooner than other foods.

Baby Led Weaning Meatless Meatballs with Garlic Bread

Meatballs (meatless or meat) freeze SUPER! Make as directed but do not cook! Freeze meatless balls on a parchment-lined cookies sheet until very firm, then transfer to a freezer bag. Freeze for up to 3 months. Cook as directed by the recipe. You may need to add a few additional minutes from frozen.

Make-ahead Veggie Loaded Spaghetti Bolognese

Bolognese sauce is a freezer classic! Make ahead, cool completely in the fridge (2 hours), then transfer into single portions in freezer bags or containers and freeze up to 2 months.

Veggie Loaded Cottage Pie (with 10 Veggies) – A recipe for Fussy Kids

I like to make cottage pies in small pans (disposable or otherwise), this way I can make one recipe into several individual freezer servings. Often, I double the recipe so I can have one pie tonight and freeze 2 smaller (2 serving sized) pies for another day. Like most of the recipe above, you’ll want to cool completely in the fridge before freezing. Wipe off any condensation on the lid/tin, or plastic wrap. Seal the cottage pie tightly with plastic wrap or if it fits into a freezer bag put it in there. Freeze for up to 3 months. Thaw and cook as directed or cook for about 30 additional minutes from frozen.

Roasted Red Pepper, Spinach and Goats Cheese Quiche

A personal favourite! These are SOOOOO amazing and they freeze really well! You’ll want to cook them before freezing and cool completely before transferring to a freezer container or bag. Freeze for up to 3 months. To heat, just pop in the microwave for about 15-20 seconds. Yum!

Mini Baby-Friendly Quiches – Baby Led Weaning Finger Food

Here’s another quiche for you! Bake as directed, cool completely and place in a freezer bag or container. Reheat in microwave for about 20-30 seconds from frozen or thaw in the refrigerator and serve cold.

Chicken and Veggie Pot Pie

Here is another AMAZING make-ahead double dinner! I like to make enough chicken pie for 2 dinners. Here is what you do. Double the recipe. Make the filling and pie crusts. Bake one straight away for tonight. For the second pie, cool the filling completely then place the chilled pie crust over top (you’ll want to keep it in the refrigerator to keep it firm). Cover tightly with plstic wrap and freeze the un-baked assembled chicken pie for up to 2 months. Bake as directed from frozen for an additional 20-30 minutes. Watch the pie closely, once the crust turns golden it’s likely done. Cover the edges with tin to keep them from burning if you need to.

Moroccan Turkey Meatballs

As with the meatless meatballs above, these freez really well. Although, with these, I may suggest you pre-cook them completely first since your dealing with raw meat. It makes things easier later down the line because all you’ll need to do is reheat them. After cooking, cool completely and store and freeze in a freezer bag for up to 3 months. Heat up in the microwave or in a pot of spaghetti sauce on the stove until heated through.

Beetroot Kale & Goat Cheese Tart

Like quiche, tarts freeze really well! You’ll want to pre-cook and then freeze these savoury tarts. They can be reheated in the microwave for 20-50 seconds (depending on the size tart you choose to make).

Sweet Freezer Foods

Mini Muffin Baby Brownies Bites with Green Frosting

You can freeze these brownie bites with the frosting on top! Place in an airtight container and freeze just like so! They thaw quickly (about 15-25 minutes on the counter). That’s it, thaw and enjoy! Freeze for up to 2 months (but they’ll be best within 1 month).

Raspberry Buckwheat Pancakes

As you may have noticed, I loke pancakes for baby-led weaning. Cool pancakes completely on a wire rack, then stack the pancakes with a small bit of parchment paper between each (this keeps them from sticking together in the freezer). Place the pancakes into an airtight freezer bag and freeze for up to 2 months (since they have fruit I don’t freeze as long as other pancakes)! Reheat in the toaster (sometimes pop them 2times) or in the microwave for 10-15 seconds.

Passion Fruit Mini Cheesecakes for Baby Led Weaning

Cheesecake is synonymous with the freezer storage and this healthy version is no different! Make it, freeze it, it’s that simple. Seriously. Keeps for about 2-3 months depending on how much fruit you place on top. They will keep the longest if you freeze without the fruit toppings.

Baby led weaning Egg-Free Pancakes with Pineapple Coulis

How repetitive are the pancake notes getting? Cool pancakes completely on a wire rack, then stack the pancakes with a small bit of parchment paper between each (this keeps them from sticking together in the freezer). Place the pancakes into an airtight freezer bag and freeze for up to 3 months! Reheat in the toaster (sometimes pop them 2 times) or in the microwave for 10-15 seconds. The pineapple coulis can be frozen separately in a small container or in and ice cube tray until frozen, then transferred to a freezer bag.

Egg-Free Mango and Coconut Vegan Muffins

Like pancakes, muffins freeze super too! Cool completely and place in a freezer bag. Freeze for up to 3 months. I tend to take a few out the night before so they are naturally thawed in the morning. If I forget, I just pop them in the microwave for 10 seconds or so (for mini muffins).

Red Velvet Pancakes with Banana Nice Cream

So this one is like a breakfast treat. It’s all refined sugar-free though. The pancakes go wonderfully on their own, but I do like to add some banana “nice cream” on top to make them like dessert for breakfast. Don’t worry, nice cream is literally just bananas…frozen…and blended and kids LOVE it. You can freeze the pancakes as directed for all the other pancakes on this page. The nice cream is best if you make it fresh since it IS frozen bananas blended. If you do it ahead you’ll have a frozen solid lump of, well, bananas. It’s all about the texture, so just freeze some bananas and blend them to serve.

Sweet Potato & Orange Chocolate Truffles- Refined Sugar Free

These truffles are soooooo good. They are chilled to begin with, so you can freeze them right away. Just be cautious when you are thawing them to eat since the chocolate tends to sweat just a little. I like to take them out of the freezer bag and place on a little parchment in the fridge to thaw. This way they sweat a little less and don’t end up sticking to each other in the bag. Store in the fridge after thawing until you’re ready to eat them. I actually enjoy them frozen but you’ll want them to be soft for babies and toddlers… 🙂

Lemon & Maple Pancakes

Cool pancakes completely on a wire rack, then stack the pancakes with a small bit of parchment paper between each (this keeps them from sticking together in the freezer). Place the pancakes into an airtight freezer bag and freeze for up to 3 months! Reheat in the toaster (sometimes pop them 2 times) or in the microwave for 10-15 seconds.

Healthy Strawberry Tarts

Strawberry tarts are so popular with kids, I think it’s the strawberry on top? Anyway! They freeze nicely. You’ll want to assemble them on a cookie sheet and freeze the sheet until the yoghurt filling if fully frozen. Then transfer the tarts to a solid container (to avoid breaking the crust). I like to stack them 2-3 rows high with a tiny bit of parchment between (like my pancakes). Thaw in the refrigerator for about an hour or two before serving.

Wheat & Oat Pancakes with Banana Nice-Cream

As with other pancakes, you’ll want to cool and freeze these with a little parchment in-between.  Oats and wheat can get a bit dry/crumbly if you freeze for too long so I’d recommend freezing these pancakes for about 2 months.

Apple Cinnamon & Raisin Muffins- Refined Sugar-Free

These mini muffins make a great idea for baby breakfast and fast! Cool completely and place in a freezer bag. Freeze for up to 3 months. I tend to take a few out the night before so they are naturally thawed in the morning. If I forget, I just pop them in the microwave for 10 seconds or so (for mini muffins).

Quinoa & Banana Flourless Pancakes

These pancakes are extra moist and freeze nicely.  Cool completely on a wire rack, then stack the pancakes with a small bit of parchment paper (especially important with these extra moist pancakes) between each, this keeps them from sticking together in the freezer. Place the pancakes into an airtight freezer bag and freeze for up to 3 months! Reheat in the toaster (sometimes pop them 2 times) or in the microwave for 10-15 seconds.

Sweet Potato Spiced Waffles with Crushed Pecans

I love to freeze waffles! I find that smaller, more shallow waffles freeze the best, but if you only have a deep Belgian waffle iron, they will freeze nicely too. Cool completely on a wire rack and stack in layers of 2-3 and place in a freezer bag. You won’t need parchment paper since the grooves help the waffles separate more easily when frozen. Reheat in the toaster with 1-2 pops!

Sweet Rhubarb Baby Led Weaning Muffins

My little Oscar loves rhubarb so we always make a few batches of these mini breakfast muffins for the freezer.  Cool completely and place in a freezer bag. Freeze for up to 3 months. I tend to take a few out the night before so they are naturally thawed in the morning. If I forget, I just pop them in the microwave for 10 seconds or so (for mini muffins).

Baby Breakfast Cookies

Breakfast and cookies go together like… milk and cookies? Ok, milk and healthy baby breakfast cookies go together as a perfect baby breakfast idea! I do recommend baking these before freezing since the dough is not like your typical flour-based cookie dough. It’s more like baked oatmeal. Bake, cool on a rack and place in a freezer bag. You can add the jam once they are thawed, but if you prefer to add it straight away, you’ll need to freeze the cookies on a cookie sheet until the jam is frozen, then transfer to a freezer bag.

How to wean a child from breastfeeding

February 13, 2020 Likbez Adviсe

The key to success is to listen to yourself and the baby, and not to the opinion of a neighbor.

When to wean a baby

According to WHO recommendations, it is best to exclusively breastfeed babies up to six months of age. Then complementary foods are gradually introduced.

Although a baby can get by with solid food once teeth have appeared, breastfeeding should not be stopped until two years of age. After all, mother's milk protects against infections and helps to digest the rest of the food. And feeding itself is an important way of communication between mother and child.

Anthropological studies show that it is natural to breastfeed babies longer than recommended by WHO. The final transition to adult food can occur closer to three or even four years. And this is quite normal.

At the same time, there are no strict rules about the duration of breastfeeding.

After six months, the most important factor is the comfort of mother and child. Feed until three - if you feel like it. Or wean a year or earlier - if you are tired or you have to go to work. Focus on yourself and the child, and not on the opinion of relatives, neighbors and girlfriends.

How to wean a child from breastfeeding painlessly

The main thing is to do everything gradually. Too abrupt cancellation is fraught with stagnation of milk (lactostasis) and inflammation of the mammary gland (mastitis) in the mother, digestive problems in the child, as well as psychological stress in both.

Pick the right time

Don't start the transition to "adulthood" when children are teething or not feeling well. It is better to postpone breastfeeding in extreme heat, as well as during the SARS epidemic.

Skip One Feed

Start by eliminating one breastfeed a day—the one your baby is least enthusiastic about. Most likely, it will be an afternoon snack. Replace breastfeeding with a bottle of milk formula if the baby is not yet a year old. Or solid food (for an older child).

When this routine becomes habitual - which can take 3 to 7 days - remove one more feeding. And so on, until the child completely switches to independent nutrition.

Feed more often during the day

The most difficult thing is to give up night and first morning feeding, because it is at night that the body produces shock doses of prolactin, the hormone responsible for milk secretion. The child is used to getting a lot of nutrients at this time. Naturally, now he will feel hungry and insistently demand the return of what he has lost. The way out is to feed more often and more densely during the day.

Leigh Ann O'Connor

Certified Lactation Consultant

Offer your child more high-calorie foods throughout the day to replenish energy stores lost at night.

Leave feeding to other family members

A father, grandmother or grandfather is quite capable of feeding a child from a bottle or a spoon. Entrust them with this task, and retire yourself to another room so that the child is not nervous and is not distracted by the smell of mother's milk.

Give your child enough time

Weaning children does not mean depriving them of attention. When the baby is full and no longer interested in getting milk, spend as much time with him as possible. Games, hugs and communication will help him get through this difficult period easier.

Pump a little

Milk production in the body follows the law of supply and demand. With the gradual refusal of breastfeeding, lactation also slows down - up to a complete cessation.

If you feel that your breasts are full, express milk, but not completely, but until the pain disappears. Otherwise, the body will perceive this as a signal that the bins are empty, and will begin to replenish reserves intensively.

Apply cabbage leaves to your chest

This old folk method is still relevant. Medical research does not deny that 20-minute application of cabbage leaves to the chest can relieve swelling and relieve milk stagnation. And although the effectiveness of the "compress from the garden" has not been fully proven, it definitely will not get worse.

Various sources advise applying cabbage either at room temperature, chilled or frozen. How is it better? A few scientific experiments give the answer: whatever. The temperature of the sheet does not affect its operation in any way.

Drink herbal decoctions

Some plants help to reduce lactation, namely:

  • sage;
  • peppermint;
  • parsley;
  • jasmine flowers.

Just pour a couple of tablespoons of dry herbs in 300-400 ml of boiling water and let it steep for a couple of hours, then strain.

What not to do when weaning a baby

As much as you would like to stop lactation as soon as possible, there are a few tricks that are better to refrain from.

Don't bandage your breasts

Our grandmothers bandaged their breasts tightly to stop lactation. Modern medicine calls for abandoning this practice, as it causes increased sensitivity and soreness of the breast. Instead of bandaging, wear a tight, but not too tight, supportive bra.

Do not take lactation medications

There are medications that suppress prolactin production. All of them have a hormonal basis and cause many side effects - from headaches and drowsiness to depression and exacerbation of various diseases. Never take them without first consulting your doctor.

Don't be thirsty

There is an opinion that the less you drink, the less milk you will produce. However, the relationship between the amount of fluid consumed and the intensity of lactation has not yet been proven. Therefore, it is better to drink plenty to avoid dehydration.

How long does it take to wean a child from breastfeeding

It depends on many factors: the age of the child, his individual characteristics, the nuances of your body. Some children painlessly refuse breastfeeding in just a few days. Others will need 2-3 weeks or even a couple of months.

In addition, when you stop breastfeeding completely, your body will produce milk for a while. If the period of breastfeeding was long, then minor lactation can last from several weeks to several months.

what you need to know before you start it

Let's start with a reminder: The World Health Organization recommends exclusive and exclusive breastfeeding until the baby is six months old, and then continued breastfeeding for up to two years or more if that suits everyone involved. However, sometimes lactation, for various reasons, ends earlier or later than the limits established by doctors.

Let's start from the idea that the time has come to end the GW. How to do it? For example, pediatrician Yevgeny Komarovsky says that a nursing woman should stupidly leave home for the weekend, leave the child with her father or grandmother, take pills to suppress lactation and return as if nothing had happened. It seems to us that this is a very inhumane way - both in relation to the child and to the woman. In the end, she is as much a participant in feeding as a child, but for some reason, many forget to reckon with her feelings. It is good that there are now many certified lactation consultants and educators who talk about the importance of the comfort of all who are directly involved in lactation and its completion.

When should a baby be weaned?

We stand entirely for the fact that this is a personal decision that is made on the basis of a variety of factors - from the need to go to work to emotional fatigue from breastfeeding. For example, in the United States, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics, on average, women complete breastfeeding between the fourth and seventh month of a child's life. There, such a short GV is due to the lack of long-term paid parental leave. Now in the States, a variety of measures are being taken to support working breastfeeding women: they are setting up pumping rooms in the offices, including breaks for these very pumping in the working day, and so on. Some large companies even have a frozen expressed milk delivery service for a mom's baby who is on a business trip. However, we digress from the topic.

Many consider the time of weaning to be convenient when the baby is 12 months old - most babies by this time already eat a variety of complementary foods, most likely, several feedings have been completely replaced by solid food, and in addition, children at this age are active and do not lie whole days in anticipation of breastfeeding.

If you decide to wean your baby, remember that you can and should rely only on your desires and feelings, the child's condition and personal circumstances. You may also want to reconsider the timing of weaning that you planned for yourself during pregnancy or shortly after childbirth - for example, some women are not ready to continue to feed all the time that they planned earlier, while others would like to extend the process. No one has the right to judge you for your choice!

How do you know if a child is ready for weaning?

Generally speaking, children are not big fans of life changes, so your child will most likely object to a weaning initiated by you. Watch him: how much food he eats, what he likes, whether he is interested in the food on your plate, whether he can go to bed without a breast (at least for a daytime sleep), whether he applies during or after the game. Take your time, start looking at your child's behavior a couple of months before the expected weaning, so it will be easier for you to make a consistent plan. Start to gradually reduce the number of daily feeds (to do this, come up with distractions - books, toys, new places to visit - you need to diversify the environment of the child so that you are less likely to take positions characteristic of feeding, that is, to form a new routine).

When exactly should a child not be weaned from breastfeeding?

Never start weaning during big events in your family life: moving, starting a new job, teething, illness, in short, everything that inevitably entails stress. Weaning is a major event in itself, inevitably associated with discomfort.

How to start the weaning process correctly?

Slowly and consistently. Make a plan and set a date by which you would like to complete the GW. Remember that you can’t remove all the feedings at once - firstly, it injures the child, and secondly, it may well cause lactostasis or even mastitis - the milk simply has nowhere to go.

Stock up on time - keep in mind the approximate date for the end of the GW plus a month to achieve the final result.

First, remove those attachments that fall during the baby's wakefulness, and only after that - those that lined up around dreams. Remove night feedings last.

Adopt a “don't refuse, don't offer” strategy: breastfeed your baby if he really wants to, but don't initiate it yourself. The less often you apply, the less milk your body will produce.

Don't blame yourself and don't label yourself as a shit mother. In addition to feeding, you and your grown-up child have other ways to exchange feelings and warmth - hugs, reading fairy tales, walking by the hand, new impressions.

If you know how to keep a diary and plan, it's time to return to this habit. Counting the number of attachments, writing down important information for you on the path to weaning, observing the dynamics of the process - all this helps to keep abreast of how well the process is going.

Give yourself and your child a chance to regress. Not everyone and not always weaning goes smoothly, so yes, you should not rule out the possibility that one day everything will go wrong, and the child will be applied more often than you would like.

Do not smear your breasts with brilliant green, mustard, or whatever else you may be advised to do. It's not fair to the little man. Seriously, would you like it if your favorite and most reliable source of joy turned treacherously green?

If possible, use the help of a partner, grandparents, girlfriend, nanny, babysitter. Switch the child's attention to them, just don't do it at the moment of hysteria - against the background of weaning, it is much more difficult to survive it without a mother.

As already mentioned, now is the time to rebuild the regime: start giving your baby breakfast, expand his menu, introduce him to fish, meat and dairy products. You can start weaning when the child is already familiar with all food groups, and he has formed the first eating habits.

Do not use sweets as a reward. Do not offer your baby anything sweet to replace breast milk. If the child is not ready for weaning, do not bribe him and send him the wrong signals about how and what to eat and how parents can be manipulated.

How long can weaning last?

It depends on what initial data you approached the decision to end lactation. If, for example, at the moment when you realized that it was time to stop breastfeeding, the child applied only a few times a day - at night and one more time before waking up, then most likely the process will not take much time. And if the attachments are still regular, frequent and long, then take at least two months for weaning.

Should I pump during weaning?

If weaning is done in stages, milk production will stop on its own.
