Though glass baby bottles might seem like something your parents or even grandparents once relied on, there are plenty of people who still reach for these feeding tools. And for good reason:

  • Safe materials: There’s no question plastic can be, well, questionable for your health. When you use glass, there’s no possibility of potentially harmful chemicals like BPA and phthalates touching your little one’s milk or formula.
  • Durable: While it’s true that the words "glass" and "durable" don’t usually go together, glass baby bottles are made of tempered glass—very thick glass that’s surprisingly strong. This sturdier glass can hold up to the rigors of parenthood, like quick changes in temperature and occasional drops. And, if you’re worried, you can always opt to add a protective silicone sleeve.
  • Easy to clean: Though glass baby bottles still have multiple parts, they’re easier to clean in the sense that they don’t absorb smells, discolor, or fog over after multiple spins in the dishwasher.
  • Built to last: So long as they don’t accidentally break, glass baby bottles will outlive any plastic ones, since they’re not prone to the same discoloration, odor absorption, and eventual deterioration as plastic. This makes them great for parents who intend to have multiple kids.

Parents and caregivers shopping for glass baby bottles have plenty of choices. Much like plastic varieties, these bottles come in many different shapes and sizes. You can find standard, no-frills bottles, or opt for more intricate anti-colic bottles. And, often, as long as you stick to the same brand, the nipples are even interchangeable, meaning you can use both plastic and glass bottles, but purchase only one set of nipples.

Of course, there are a handful of downsides to glass baby bottles, most notably the fact that tempered glass is rather heavy. And even though tempered, glass is glass, which means it’s susceptible to breakage, which could pose a risk of injury to you or your child.

Still, to many, these drawbacks pale in comparison to the potentially harmful effects of plastic, especially since the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) still recommends using alternatives to plastic, such as glass or stainless steel, whenever possible.

How we chose the best glass baby bottles

For such an inherently simple item, finding the right baby bottle can feel like a Goldilocks situation—it’s actually pretty difficult to find just the right one.

To help you find the perfect fit, we consulted BabyCenter’s Community, analyzing millions of posts to see what baby bottles—and, more specifically, what glass baby bottles—families use and recommend to each other. Then, our expert editorial team vetted each product to come up with a definitive list of the best products out there.

Keep reading to find our favorite glass bottle for breastfed babies, the top glass bottle for newborn, and more. And if you're looking for more baby feeding items, our favorite baby bottle warmers and bottle drying racks can help.

Best glass baby bottle overall

Philips Avent Natural Glass Bottle

You really can’t beat the convenience of the Philips Avent Natural glass bottles. They’re incredibly easy to set up and clean, yet have a built-in anti-colic system to prevent gas bubbles from building up in your baby’s belly. There are no extra parts, just a special venting system in the nipple. These glass bottles are exceptionally durable as far as glass goes, too, since they’re made of pharmaceutical-grade borosilicate (think Pyrex) glass that is heat- and thermal shock-resistant. The bottle can go directly from the fridge to warm water without worry.

Heads up

The collar has small recesses inside that can be difficult to wash.

Parents say

“We used the Avent ones. Never had any issues — no chipping, no smells. None ever broke! Even when dropped. We still even drink out of them.”

Specs
  • Choose from 4 or 8 ounces
  • 3-pack

Best glass bottles for breastfed babies

Tommee Tippee Closer to Nature Baby Bottles

It can be difficult to find a nipple largely breastfed babies won’t reject, but Tommee Tippee says their nipple has a “just like mom” design that many exclusively breastfed babies will accept. Breastfed babies will also appreciate the slow flow of the nipple, since they can better control the amount of milk coming out. The contoured, curved design has a simple (read: easy to clean) anti-colic design with a special venting valve to minimize gas, too.

Heads up

Nipples have a tendency to cave in.

Parents say

“I liked the Tommy Tippee glass bottles.”

Specs
  • Choose between 5 and 9 ounces
  • Choose between a 3-pack and single bottles

Best glass baby bottle for newborns

Evenflo Vented Plus Bottles

The smaller 4-ounce version of these classic bottles are great for newborns, and closely mirror the size and shape of the bottles provided in the hospital. There’s one big difference though: They have a twist in the bottle's body that’s designed to make the bottle more ergonomic and give you a better grip when feeding an infant. The nipples also have patented micro-air vents that prevent them from caving in and slows the flow for your baby. A nice convenience: These bottles are compatible with many popular breast pumps, so you can pump right into the bottle.

Heads up

The nipple cover is very difficult to remove unless the bottle is fully assembled.

Parents say

“We used Evenflo because of cost, and had great results with them. Only broke one during that first year, which is a win.”

Specs
  • Choose from 4 or 8 ounces
  • 6-pack
  • Clear or tinted

Best glass baby bottle set

NUK Simply Natural Glass Baby Bottles and Pacifier Newborn Gift Set

If you’re looking for a great gift for the eco-conscious, this 11-piece bottle set is it. It includes glass bottles in two sizes—two 4-ounce options for newborns and three 8-ounce options for older babies—plus a bottle brush for easy cleaning and two pacifiers. The soft, breast-like nipples are highly functional, too, thanks to a one-piece anti-colic system that helps reduce colic, gas, and spit up.

Heads up

Some parents say the measurements on the side are slightly off.

Parents say

“My LO uses the NUK Simply Natural and likes them.”

Specs
  • Set contains 2 4-ounce bottles with slow-flow nipples, 3 8-ounce bottles with medium-flow nipples, 3 fast-flow nipples with 9 holes, newborn pacifier, orthodontic silicone pacifier, and bottle brush

Best glass baby bottle for colic

Dr. Brown’s Options+ Baby Bottle, Wide-Neck

Though the multiple parts undoubtedly make Dr. Brown’s bottles more difficult to clean, they’re the gold standard when it comes to anti-colic bottles. That’s because they have a patented vent system that helps keep air out of the bottle and, thus, your baby’s belly. The Dr. Brown's vent system also helps create a paced flow that mimics breastfeeding — again, an important way to keep air out of your little one’s tummy.

Heads up

These bottles have many parts that can be hard to assemble and clean.

Parents say

“We use the glass Dr. Brown's wide neck bottles and love them. I feel like they get cleaner than plastic, no smells or stains etc. One did break, but it fell from a cabinet, bounced off the counter and slammed on the hardwood floors. We have dropped plenty of others off the sofa or chair and they haven’t broken.”

Specs
  • Choose from 5 or 9 ounces
  • Choose 2-pack or 3-pack

Best glass baby bottle with protective sleeve

Lifefactory Glass Baby Bottle

If you’re worried about the dangers of broken glass, Lifefactory bottles are a great option as each comes with a protective silicone sleeve. As an added bonus, these silicone sleeves make it easier for caregivers to get a good grip on the bottle, particularly if it’s a bit wet. And the thermo-shock resistant glass underneath is tough enough to go from freezer to hot water without breaking. Lifefactory bottles have another great bonus, too: They’re compatible with most of the popular breast pump models.

Heads up

The neck of this bottle is narrow, which can make mixing formula tricky.

Parents say

“I only have the 9-ounce at this time, but I'm pretty sure the 4-ounce is the same, just shorter. I don't find it ‘heavy’ at all, considering it is glass.”

Specs
  • Choose from 4 or 9 ounces
  • Choose from 12 colors

Best hybrid glass baby bottle

Chicco Duo Hybrid Baby Bottles

If you love the idea of glass, but hate the thought of it shattering, you’ll love the ChiccoDuo. It’s the first “hybrid” bottle to market. What exactly does that mean? Although the exterior is lightweight, shatterproof plastic, the interior is 100 percent glass, so your baby’s milk touches nothing but glass. This also means no worry about smell or flavor absorption, and the plastic cushions the glass so it's far less likely to break.

Heads up

Some parents say the nipple is not universally appealing.

Parents say

“There is also the new Chicco Duo, which is both [plastic and glass], and they are pretty light, too. I was a plastic advocate until I saw those bottles lol.”

Specs
  • Choose from 5 or 9 ounces
  • Choose single bottle or 2-pack

What to know about glass and plastic baby bottles and safety

Parents first started choosing glass baby bottles again after concerns surfaced over an ingredient found in plastic called bisphenol A, more commonly referred to as BPA, that can leach into food and beverages. And although the FDA took action to ban the use of BPA in baby bottles and sippy cups in 2012, the AAP still recommends using alternatives to plastic, such as glass or stainless steel, whenever possible—and especially if the contents inside are heated.

What’s more, the AAP says plastic should not be put in the dishwasher, which is something worth considering if you don’t anticipate having the time to hand-wash all of your bottles.

How to warm glass baby bottles

The most important thing to note is the AAP says you should never microwave any type of baby bottles — glass or plastic — because the microwave heats unevenly. As a result, the bottle might feel cool, but contain very hot liquid. Even if a few tests drops seem cool, there could be significant hot spots.

Instead, you can warm a bottle by placing it in a bowl of hot water for a few minutes. In most cases, a plug-in bottle warmer is also an option, but check package instructions for both the bottle and the warmer first, since some glass bottles aren't safe to use in some warmers.

Are glass baby bottles safe for the dishwasher?

In general glass baby bottles are dishwasher-safe, but like any product meant for a baby, it’s important to consult the package insert for proper care instructions. There are some exceptions to this rule.

At first thought, the idea of glass baby bottles for your little one may seem crazy. Too dangerous, right?

Turns out, not necessarily. The old-school bottles you may be picturing have come a long way over the years and there are various reasons why you may want to opt for glass over plastic.

We chose these glass bottles based on affordability, product information from the manufacturers, and reviews from consumers who had positive experiences. We also kept both formula and breastfed babies in mind when researching and selecting these bottles.

Note that many of the bottles we feature in this list come in multi-packs, so the pricing guide is based on the price per bottle.

Pricing guide

  • $ = under $10 per bottle
  • $$ = $10–$12 per bottle
  • $$$ = over $12 per bottle

Best glass bottle for newborns

Dr. Brown’s Options + Wide-Neck Baby Bottle

  • Price: $
  • Size: 5 ounces (oz.)
  • Pros: wide neck makes for easy filling; anti-colic vent system grows with baby; good for newborns
  • Cons: not recommended beyond 12 months of age; doesn’t fit common breast pump brands, per reviewers

This 5-oz. bottle is a great option for newborns, as it’s contoured for a proper latch and offers an anti-colic vent system that grows with your baby, creating a paced flow as your baby develops their feeding technique. The manufacturer says these features can help reduce spitting up, burping, and gas, while aiding in digestion.

One reviewer notes that the wide neck makes it easy to pour formula inside.

Best glass bottle for the budget

Evenflo Feeding Classic Glass Twist Bottles

  • Price: $
  • Size: 8 oz.
  • Pros: may help reduce colic; fits most standard breast pumps; easy to clean
  • Cons: reviewers note that this bottle heats much faster than plastic and can be hard to read when filled

Six of these 8-oz. glass bottles retail for under $20, so this value pack is definitely a steal. They’re also easy to hold and to clean, and they’re made to fit most standard breast pumps so you can pump directly into them.

They also offer premium venting technology that the manufacturer suggests keeps bubbles inside the bottle rather than in your baby’s tummy, helping to prevent reflux, gas, and fussiness.

Best grip on a glass bottle

Joovy Boob Diamond

  • Price: $$$
  • Size: 8 oz.
  • Pros: temperature shock resistant; fits a variety of nipple options; designed to prevent air bubbles from showing
  • Cons: reviewers note that the pack of three comes with only one bottle sleeve; bottles may leak if the ring isn’t screwed firmly enough

One aspect that can make glass bottles less safe than plastic is that they’re more likely to break, and a weak grip can only add to that possibility.

This bottle comes with a silicone sleeve to prevent slippage and make you feel more confident in handling the bottle with a wiggly baby. You can also leave the sleeve on when heating the bottle in a warmer, which adds to its convenience.

Best glass bottle for colic

Philips Avent Glass Natural Response Bottle

  • Price: $
  • Size: 4 oz.
  • Pros: wide nipple makes it easy to combine with breastfeeding; offers advanced anti-colic system
  • Cons: holds less milk compared with other bottles at the same price point; not portable; not compatible with natural nipples

This glass bottle is made with venting technology meant to reduce colic and stomach discomfort by making airflow away from your baby’s belly. It also features a wide breast-shaped nipple to promote a natural latch if you’re combining breast- and bottle-feeding.

Most durable glass bottle

Lifefactory Glass Baby Bottle

  • Price: $$$
  • Size: 4 oz.
  • Pros: thermal shock resistant; silicone sleeves make for easier grip; silicone sleeve helps prevents breakage
  • Cons: holds less milk than other bottles at lower price points; won’t fit wide-neck nipples

This bottle is made with super-strong borosilicate glass that can withstand heat and thermal shock, making it a convenient and reliable option to use straight from the freezer. It’s also equipped with a nonslip silicone sleeve to provide a better grip, which can be left on in the dishwasher. Lastly, this bottle is compatible with most breast pumps.

Best glass bottle for breastfed babies

Lansinoh Breastfeeding Bottle with Natural Wave Nipple

  • Price: $
  • Size: 8 oz.
  • Pros: wavy nipples help reduce nipple confusion; air ventilation system may help reduce stomach discomfort and colic
  • Cons: only comes with medium flow nipples; slow flow should be purchased separately

These premium glass bottles are equipped with wavy nipples that are designed to reduce nipple confusion and help babies switch back and forth between the breast and bottle. They may encourage babies to use the same natural sucking action used when nursing to help maintain similar breastfeeding patterns.

The bottles’ air ventilation system is also designed to minimize stomach discomfort and colic.

Best eco-friendly glass bottle

HEVEA Baby Glass Bottle

  • Price: $$$
  • Size: 8 oz.
  • Pros: made from more durable environmentally friendly glass; durable against forceful breakage
  • Cons: only comes with two bottles per pack, compared with other packages at same price point; reviewers say they don’t fit most sleeves

Glass bottles are generally more environmentally friendly than plastic, but this bottle takes it a step further. It’s made from durable borosilicate glass with a plant-based natural rubber nipple that is free of phthalates, BPA, PVC, and plastic material.

Reviewers note that their breastfed babies took to these easily and that these bottles stood up to being forcefully dropped without breaking.

Best budget bottle

NUK Simply Natural Glass Baby Bottles

  • Price: $
  • Size: 4 oz. and 8 oz.
  • Pros: two sizing options; extra-soft nipple provides natural feel; anti-colic system helps reduce gas and spit-up
  • Cons: one reviewer notes this bottle may be too heavy for some babies

These glass bottles offer many of the same features as other pricier models. They’re equipped with nipples designed to mimic breastfeeding, with a scooped cavity to aid in the natural movement of your baby’s mouth, tongue, and jaw.

The nipples also have multiple holes to use if your baby does better with a medium or slow flow. Finally, these BPA-free bottles are made of 80% glass and 20% silicone and are equipped with an anti-colic system to minimize gas and spit-up.

Shop now at Amazon

When shopping for glass baby bottles, you’ll quickly find that you have an abundance of choices. You can find cheaper, no-frills bottles, bottle options for colicky babies, and even some brands that have interchangeable nipples, meaning you can also use them for plastic bottles if you choose to use them.

To narrow down your selection, consider your baby’s needs, such as if they’re a newborn, if they’re also being breastfed, and more.

Glass bottles are built to last, making them a worthwhile investment for your child’s earliest years. They can be easier to clean and sterilize than plastic ones, as they won’t eventually fog over or develop a film that’s hard to scrub off, as plastic often does.

They can also be heated in a bottle warmer straight from the fridge and boiled to sanitize, and they won’t eventually develop a lingering funky smell after a while or if you don’t wash them right away, which is definitely a plus.

It’s true that unlike plastic bottles, glass bottles can break if dropped or thrown on the floor. However, most of today’s glass bottles are made of sturdier glass that can handle rapid changes in temperature when warmed up and won’t break when thrown from a stroller.

Not only that, but the American Academy of Pediatrics suggests “using alternatives to plastic, such as glass or stainless steel, when possible.

How often should glass baby bottles be replaced?

While glass bottle tend to last longer than plastic, many bottle manufacturers, parents, and caregivers recommend replacing them every 4 to 6 months.

Do glass baby bottles reduce colic?

There is no evidence that suggests glass bottles help keep air out of your baby’s stomach better than bottles of other material. A venting system, which is available with many types of bottles, may help reduce air swallowing. It may also help with colic, if that’s an issue contributing to their symptoms.

How do you clean glass baby bottles?

Glass bottles are dishwasher-safe, and going that route tends to be most efficient when it comes to thoroughly cleaning them. If hand-washing, though, make sure to use hot, soapy water and rinse them well.

How do you sterilize glass bottles?

You can sterilize glass bottles and nipples by placing them in boiling water for 5 minutes.

Yes, glass bottles cost a bit more than plastic, but as a healthier option for you and the environment, they can be a worthwhile investment.

Consider saving yourself the chore of keeping plastic looking and feeling clean by choosing bottles that will stand and shine strong for years to come.

glass or plastic: how to choose a bottle for feeding - Parents.

Baby

What bottles does a baby need?

When breastfeeding, one or two bottles are enough to give your baby expressed milk, medicine, water or juice as needed. When the baby is bottle-fed, at least six bottles are needed (for 5-8 feedings per day). Babies need vessels of 110, 120 and 150 ml or 240/250 ml - they will last up to 4 months. For children older than a year, you will need a larger container.

Glass or plastic?

Design and all kinds of decorative elements are nice things, but secondary. First of all, the bottle must be made of safe and non-toxic materials: it must not contain harmful substances such as BPA, phthalates and PVC. Glass bottles are safe in this regard, plus they are durable and practical - they are easy to care for. There are also disadvantages: the glass can break and is heavy for a small hand.

Modern plastic feeding bottles are safe: trusted manufacturers use quality materials. They are light, do not break, can have different shapes - it is no coincidence that plastic bottles are the most popular among mothers.

Which shape is best?

Today there is a huge selection of bottles, various in shape: from a classic cylinder to an oval with a hole in the middle. The bottle, curved in the middle, contributes to better filling of the nipple, and the child swallows less air. Additional protection against colic will be a special hole in the bottom, which can be opened during feeding - air will flow through it, which will relieve the pressure inside the bottle.

Shape also plays an important role in bottle washing: the simpler it is, the easier it is to clean. If the neck is wide, it is convenient to fill the bottle and wash it with a brush. Give preference to simple, without bends, types - they are easier to care for.

For special occasions

There are anti-colic and physiological bottles. The first are designed to alleviate bloating and colic syndrome in babies by minimizing the intake of air into their body along with food. This is possible due to the special design of the container: a removable system of pistons and valves, which is installed in the neck, or the presence of an additional nipple with valves.

The second type is a hemisphere, reminiscent of the shape of the female breast. In addition to the unusual shape, their superiority lies in the functional features. Soft, like a large nipple with a hard bottom, they are ideal for breastfeeding babies. Due to their design, these bottles do not interfere with the suckling habit of newborns, as they mimic the mechanism of breast sucking.

Tips and Tricks

  • Pay attention to the bottle size when buying. It should fit easily in any segment (drawer, sterilizer, refrigerator).

  • When choosing glass bottles, give preference to expensive ones, which are made of heat-resistant glass and therefore are reliable during sterilization (cheap ones sometimes burst).

  • The bottle nipple should be appropriate for the age and appetite of the baby.

  • If the bottle is used extensively, the nipple should be changed every 2-3 months.

  • New bottles should be sterilized. If there is no sterilizer, you can boil all the parts for 5-7 minutes. Be sure to get a bottle brush and don't forget to change it 3-4 times a month.

  • Check that the teat holder and cap are secure before shaking: how tight everything is.

  • Get a holder (removable handles) for your baby: when it comes time to learn to eat on their own, this will make the task easier.

Care Instructions

Wash the bottle and teat before each use.
