At least two organic poultry farms were supplied with 100 tons of feed grains contaminated with the banned herbicide nitrofen.
The grain produced back in 2001 was gradually fed to the poultry. This news, received last Friday, caused a major political scandal.
Grain containing nitrofen was supplied from Brandenburg and further distributed by a feed company from Lower Saxony to the so-called bio-farms throughout Germany, in other words to farmers who reject the use of chemical fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides. Such farms enjoy certain benefits under the concept of "new agricultural path", which was developed by the ruling red-green coalition.
Nitrofen in baby food
As the Berlin newspaper "Tageszeitung" reported on Monday, citing a representative of the Hipp company, which produces baby food from products supplied by organic farms, traces of nitrofen were found in Hipp products as early as January 2002.
